TrailerFest: Karate Kid, Frozen and Sex and the City II Trailers Hit the Web!

22 December 2009 9:18 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Seems like there are a lot of trailers coming out this time of year. This little hyperpost will have a looks at the Karate Kid remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. Other trailers are for the indie ski thriller, Frozen and the anticipated sequel Sex and the City 2.

Karate Kid – a remake of the classic 80s staple this new film takes essential plot elements from the classic film and creates a whole new story. Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new movie borrows from the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan).

Frozen - A typical day on the slopes turns into a chilling nightmare for three snowboarders when they get stranded on the chairlift before their last run. As the ski patrol switches off the night lights, they realize with growing panic that »

Blu-Ray Review: Underrated ‘Orphan’ Deserved Better Blu-Ray

5 November 2009 8:25 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Orphan” is a surprisingly effective thriller that delivers exactly what audiences should expect from it. This is B-movie filmmaking elevated by A-list actors Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard in a clever mix of honest emotion and ridiculous, over-the-top, “Mommie Dearest”-esque insanity. The film deserved a better Blu-Ray release.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

In theaters, some questioned whether or not the more ridiculous moments in “Orphan” were meant to be played for laughs or horror. I honestly don’t care. Movies are enjoyable for what they are, not what they mean to be. And I enjoyed “Orphan”. It runs way too long and features lot twists that stretch credulity but it is as genuinely intriguing and entertaining as any of the adult thrillers released this past summer.

Orphan was released on DVD, Blu-Ray, On Demand and Digital Download on October 27th, 2009.

Bewitched: Watch the Last Episode; "The Truth, Nothing But The Truth, So Help Me, Sam"

24 September 2009 10:59 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Starring Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick York, and Agnes Moorehead, Bewitched began its run in 1964 as the second highest-rated show for the year. The series remained in the top 20 for its first five seasons.

York left the show after five years, largely due to debilitating back pain following an accident on the set of a movie. He was replaced by Dick Sargent in one of the most well-known bits of recasting in TV history. Sargent carried on admirably but the show slipped into 25th place for season six.

The audience began to tire of the concept, scripts were being rehashed, and the face of television was changing. In its final year, Bewitched was aired opposite Norman Lear's groundbreaking All in the Family sitcom and Bewitched's viewership really fell.

Despite the poor ratings, it's believed that a ninth season »

September 11: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

12 September 2009 10:10 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but it’s all this settling back down into pre-autumnal routine has got you exhausted. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you check out Whiteout this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I like my scares on the ice done up more science fiction-y.” Instead Of: Whiteout, in which Kate Beckinsale’s U.S. marshal attempts to solve the first murder in Antarctica... Watch: Either 1951’s The Thing From Another World or John Carpenter’s 1982 remake ,The Thing, about terror at the South Pole of a more extraterrestrial sort. If U.S. marshals are your thing, check out 1993’s The Fugitive for Tommy Lee Jones’s Oscar-winning performance as a highly entertaining and doggedly determined federal lawman. For »

Kate Beckinsale Braves The Freezing Cold For 'Whiteout'

Los Angeles — Although she was born into a respected British acting family and got her big break in an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," Kate Beckinsale has always been blessed — or cursed — with a knack for genre films. While films like "The Golden Bowl," "Nothing but the Truth" and "Laurel Canyon" have underperformed, the "Underworld" films have coupled with "Van Helsing" to make her the queen of fanged, sexy cinema.

This week, Beckinsale returns with "Whiteout," an ice-cold thriller based on the beloved 1998 comic book of the same name. Although she's traded in her leather bodysuit for a burly winter coat, geeks will still drool over her take on U.S. »

New On DVD: 'Nothing But The Truth'

11 May 2009 1:53 PM, PDT | ReelTalkTV.com | See recent ReelTalkTV.com news »

One of the more tragically overlooked movies of last year is now on DVD. Hopefully, "Nothing But the Truth" will find the audience it deserves on home video (phrase sounds so quaint, doesn't it? Home disc is actually more accurate but just doesn't sound right).

This ripped-from-the-headlines (based on the Valerie Plame/Judy Miller incident) drama from writer/director Rod Lurie starred Kate Beckinsale in the role of her career as a reporter who is sent to jail because she won't reveal her source. Alan Alda is terrific as her defense attorney, and so is Vera Farmiga in a sharp supporting turn. »

Nothing But the Truth (review)

5 May 2009 5:59 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

And here we come to the tricksy middle ground of my green light/yellow light/red light ratings scale: When I saw Nothing But the Truth last year, it was slated for theatrical release, and would have garnered a yellow-light/wait-for-dvd rating. Then the film became a casualty of distributor Yari Film Group’s financial woes and subsequent bankruptcy, never got its theatrical release, and went straight to DVD last week. Can I recommend you check it out on DVD? Yes... but the green-on-dvd rating still comes with caveats. It’s hard to put a finger on anything actually wrong with this earnest drama of politics, conscience, and democratic ideals -- and I must emphasize that I like film critic-turned-filmmaker Rod Lurie (Resurrecting the Champ) not just because he’s one of my own but for his storytelling sincerity and dedication -- but it’s equally difficult to embrace it enthusiastically, »

This Week on DVD: Jcvd, Bride Wars, Martyrs

28 April 2009 9:16 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

If you're planning on doing some DVD shopping this week, you're essentially looking at some mediocre theatrical releases from January and a handful of genre flicks to choose from. In addition to Bride Wars and Hotel for Dogs, there is the A Tale of Two Sisters remake The Uninvited, the controversial Martyrs, direct-to-dvd Mma action flick Never Surrender, plus the festival favourite Jcvd starring (you guessed it!) Jean Claude Van-Damme. Also hitting stores today is the animated feature Jetsons: The Movie, the first two volumes of the '90s X-Men animated series, and on Blu-ray, Season 1 of Star Trek: The Original Series. See anything worth picking up? Jcvd [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Bride Wars [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) The Uninvited [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) Hotel for Dogs [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) What Doesn't Kill You [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Martyrs [11] Nothing But The Truth [12] Never Surrender [13] Sex & Lies in Sin City [14] While She Was Out [15] What's Up Scarlet? Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 4/28

Bride Wars

One minute, she's struggling with addiction and family drama in the winning Rachel Got Married. The next, Anne Hathaway was skyrocketing to the dredge, terrible marriage stereotyping, and wedding wars with Kate Hudson. Jeffrey M. Anderson said there's one worthy minute in the film, but the "rest of the time, for 88 out of its 89 minutes, it's a movie totally devoid of life." Also on Blu-ray. Skip it.

The Uninvited

One would think that a film with David Strathairn and Elizabeth Banks would be worth a moment or two, especially since they're not running to the horror/thriller genre every day, but as Jette Kernion said in her review in February: the story is weak, Banks' lines are "stilted and almost laughable," and Strathairn's performance "made me want to go home and put on one of his better movies to forget about »
