Deadly Friend es una película de terror de 1986 dirigida por Wes Craven protagonizada por Matthew Labyorteaux y Kristy Swanson.
Today, we want to bring back the memories of this Wes Craven film (the same director behind Nightmare on Elm Street) that wasn’t necessarily good, nor did it possess an exceptional cinematic treatment: a limited script, a bit of blood, and a lot of hype.
Yet, something grabbed our attention: the concept of Artificial Intelligence was there, already in 1986.
Plot
A boy moves with his mother to a new neighborhood. Some own dogs, others cats, and some, a robot with a somewhat rudimentary AI implanted into it.
As it turns out, a very blonde and friendly neighbor girl approaches the boy, but unfortunately, ends up dead in an accident involving her father. The boy, already having feelings for her, decides to revive her by implanting the Cpu of the computer into her.

In 1982, anthropologist Wade Davis traveled to Haiti on a mission: to investigate documented cases of zombiism, specifically cases of people who had been declared dead but who then miraculously came back to life. Davis immersed himself in the very real world of Haitian voodoo, witnessing an array of unbelievable rituals and fascinating rites, prompting him to write the book The Serpent and the Rainbow, which would go on to become a bestseller. Referred to in certain circles as a sort of real life Indiana Jones, Davis’ profile rose and, of course, Hollywood came calling, hoping his tales of voodoo and mystery might translate into a spectacular big screen adventure. Davis was wary of Hollywood and worried the adaptation of his book would bastardize his accounts, but hoped if the right people were involved, his story would be given a respectable treatment. As is often the case in the City of Angels,...

Join usssss as we close out our double bill of Techno Terrors from Wes Watts Craven with the truly bananas cult hit Deadly Friend (1986). Your horror hosts Kimmi and Jon have two wildly different takes on this disastrous production, but at least we can all agree that this (annoying) robot movie gave us one of Horror’s greatest exploding heads. Sure, it’s got a confused storyline that was made worse but studio notes, MPAA reshoots, and shoe-horned nightmare sequences but at its core Deadly Friend is a deranged riff on the classic Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and one hell of a weird effort from a true Master of Horror.

After a genre-defining golden age from 1978 to 1984, slashers continued to proliferate cinemas throughout the rest of the ’80s. By the time the ’90s rolled around, however, diminishing returns for franchises and newcomers alike made it seem as though the slasher well had run dry. But, like its bottomless repository of knife-wielding villains, the genre has proven that it can never be stopped. During the dry period before Scream revitalized slashers in 1996, savvy filmmakers began leaning into the campy elements as a response to dwindling audiences rooting for the villains rather than fearing them. Dr. Giggles was just what the doctor ordered.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “Scream VI,” now playing in theaters.
The casual horror fan probably noticed a few iconic masks and monsters in the “Scream VI” subway scene: There’s Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Pinhead and even modern staples like Florence Pugh’s flower dress from “Midsommar” and a group of tethered people from Jordan Peele’s “Us.” But costume designer Avery Plewes and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett went to extra lengths to pack more than 50 Easter eggs, costumes and blink-and-you-miss-it references into the latest “Scream.”
Tracking down Ghostface in New York City, the “Scream VI” crew, consisting of Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding), Ethan Landry (Jack Champion) and Danny Brackett (Josh Segarra), pile into the subway to confront the latest masked killer. However, it’s Halloween time, which means the train car...

When the "Scream VI" trailer debuted a month ago, slasher flick purists were taken aback by Ghostface's use of a shotgun in the opening bit. This is a slasher flick. Slashers... slash, right?
If you're at all familiar with the genre, you know that the best slasher movies get inventive with their kills. Jason Voorhees famously used a speargun to brilliant 3D effect in "Friday the 13th Part III," Samantha exploded Anne Ramsey's head with a basketball in "Deadly Friend," and pyramid sinkers figure prominently in Buddy Cooper's magnificent "The Mutilator."
The one method of murder that tends to be frowned upon in slasher flicks is gunplay. Sure, antagonists who are closely associated with a certain implement of dispatch have to call an audible every now and then, but firearms are just, in the Grand Guignol tradition, gauche. Unless you're soaring off the rails, you owe it to...

Among horror fans, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is generally regarded as one of the best entries of the fantasy slasher franchise, which is now nine films deep. It's the entry that cemented Freddy Krueger as the wisecracking child killer he's known as now, an evolution that took creator Wes Craven's original concept and expanded it to give his monster more commercial appeal.
The third installment comes along on the success of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge," a sequel that, like its predecessor, follows a teenager battling the evil spirit of a scarred, blade-gloved child killer. Freddy operates in the dream world, and his signature striped sweater and filthy brown fedora are often the last things his victims see before their dream death and corresponding real-world death. New Line Cinema struck gold with the "Nightmare" movies; their baddie, unlike the hulking Jason Voorhees or strong,...

M3GAN is a science fiction horror movie directed by Gerard Johnstone, starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng and Brian Jordan Alvarez. The screenplay is written by Akela Cooper. By Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster Productions.
This movie is produced by James Wan (The Conjuring) which means one thing is for sure: this is a commercial movie. This is a movie full of clichés and common things (we accept this) and at the same time it is an ironic horror film that knows how to combine the iconography of the genrre in a brilliant way in a script that is intelligent even if it is superficially silly.
Storyline

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back and perhaps more sad than ever before. The term "character actor" is a strange one. Generally, people are referred to as character actors if they do not fall within the traditional standards of attractiveness set by Hollywood, usually playing supporting parts to the leads. Someone like J.K. Simmons is a prototypical character actor. They are not defined by genre or era and can basically be plopped into any movie to play an outrageous character, an emotional grounding force, or just a utility player. Once in awhile, they will be enlisted to be the lead of a movie, but this is a rarity, as their stature within the industry keeps them solidly lower-billed than...

Attention, all Taylordle players! The "Holy Swift" podcast, aka the creators of Wordle (Taylor's Version), is expanding Taylordle's Swiftie-inspired dictionary to now include up to eight-letter words. There's no denying that Taylordle walked so other Wordle spinoffs, such as Wordlerry (created for Harry Style diehards) and BTS Wordle (for ARMYs stans), could run. Given the popularity of Wordle and the "All Too Well" singer's dedicated fan base, it's no surprise that Taylordle has had mass success since its March 2022 launch. Now fans have the opportunity to guess a variety of Swiftie terms, including six-letter words like "McGraw," "Juliet," "Archer," and "Willow."
Taylordle follows the same premise and color-coded rules as its predecessor: gray means the letter isn't included in the mystery word, yellow means the letter is in the word but not in the right spot, and green indicates the letter is in its correct spot. Players have six attempts to guess a Swiftie word.

Photo: ‘My Best Friend Anne Frank’ Childhood innocence is a part of human nature. No matter who you are or where you come from, the children around you will all be filled with the same innocence, the same sense of wonder and adventure. Kids will be kids, they’ll play catch with friends, tease each other about school crushes, and dream about the future. This is constant, we see it portrayed beautifully in Ben Sambogaart’s newest film. The difference is, Sombogaart depicts the loss of innocence, the way innocence is broken and chipped away at. ‘My Best Friend Anne Frank’ is the real story of Hannah Goslar and her experience through the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam and the Holocaust. Hannah’s best friend is Anne Frank, a diarist known for her journaling of her experiences in hiding from the Nazis. At its heart, the film is not about the Holocaust,...

Exclusive: Rupert Friend and Richard Ayoade are the latest additions to join the all-star cast of Netflix’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which Wes Anderson is writing and directing. Friend and Ayoade join the previously announced Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley.
Netflix had no comment on the project.
The original book is made up of several short stories, and while it’s unknown which ones would be covered in this project, sources do say it would consist of three mini-films similar to the Coen brothers’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Production is expected to start next week in London.
When Netflix acquired the full Dahl story catalog in September, it indicated it planned on the creation of a universe of projects across animated and live-action films and TV, publishing, games, immersive experiences, live theater and consumer products. The streamer...

Refresh for updates… The news that writer-director Jean-Marc Vallée died suddenly over the weekend at age 58 has spurred reactions from his homey country Canada to Hollywood and beyond.
The Montreal-born filmmaker behind Dallas Buyers Club, which won Oscars for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, and Wild, which scored nominations for Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, also scored Emmys and Emmy nominations for piloting the HBO limited series Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, passed away in Quebec City at age 58.
Tributes last night and this morning came from those who worked with him including Witherspoon, who starred in Wild and Big Little Lies. The Canadian film community also has responded in shock; Vallée’s first big feature after starting out as a music video director was his semi-autobiographical C.R.A.Z.Y., which played the Toronto Film Festival.

Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard are all but upstaged by their puppet child in this tragicomic pop opera
Carlo Collodi’s 19th-century tale The Adventures of Pinocchio has cast a long shadow over cinema, inspiring everything from a 1911 Italian live-action silent to Matteo Garrone’s 2019 Pinocchio, via such diverse fare as Disney’s 1940 animation and Spielberg’s futuristic 2001 sci-fi AI: Artificial Intelligence. A Guillermo del Toro stop-motion adaptation is also forthcoming. In the meantime we have this tragicomic musical fantasy from Cannes best director winner Leos Carax and American pop maestros Sparks, in which a starry cast is augmented – and arguably upstaged – by a puppet in the title role.

“Friend” (2001) is one of the most important productions in the history of the contemporary Korean Cinema, since it was among the films that turned the local’s attention to local titles after many years, and even became the highest grossing South Korean movie of all time from 2001 to 2003. Thus, a sequel was bound to happen at some point, with Kwak Kyung-taek managing to do so more than a decade later
The original told the story of four friends. Joon-seok, whose father was a mob boss, a position he acquired himself later on, Dong-su, who later joined a rival gang, Jung-ho, the class clown, and Sang-taek, the only one who utterly escaped any mob taints. At the end of the first film, Dong-su is murdered and in the subsequent trial, Joon-seok pleads guilty and ends up in prison.

Writing about “Friend” is quite intimidating. The movie has been discussed and written about a lot. What could I possibly bring to the table? What would be interesting for you, dear Reader? I’ll try to give a non-lengthy overview of why the 2001 movie is interesting to watch and add my two cents.
“Friend” follows the life of four friends growing up in the 1970s in the city of Busan, and becoming adults. They are from different backgrounds and have different trajectories. Joon-seok (Yu Oh-seong) is the son of a local mafia’s godfather, not overly excited about it, and very loyal to his friends. He is the glue that holds the group together. Dong-su (Jang Dong-gun) comes from an undertaker family and wholeheartedly rejects it. Jung-ho (Jung Woon-taek) is the comic relief of the band. Sang-taek (Seo Tae-hwa) comes from a middle-class family, is shy and hard-working in school.

"The process for director Mike Nelson and I started by discussing some of our influences and inspirations, after which it became clear that he was very interested in the specific sounds and sonics of the score. He wanted it to be largely sound design-based and also to be as simple as possible when we could, focusing on finding key signature sounds for certain characters and situations as opposed to melodic themes. As we got into the scoring process, the sounds that Mike most gravitated towards were scratchy and piercing solo strings and high atonal synths to supplement the tension and horror, warped and manipulated pulses to add pace and intensity, and rumbling and growling basses...

What would Silence of the Lambs be without Hannibal Lecter? The coldblooded cannibal genius played by Anthony Hopkins is one of the most iconic villains in film history — but, due to nagging rights issues, his name can’t even be uttered in CBS’ new drama Clarice, which follows FBI agent Clarice Starling a year after the events of Lambs.
The absence of Lecter and his indelible dynamic with Clarice leaves a huge void that Clarice (premiering Thursday, Feb. 11 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes) struggles to fill. The result is a disappointingly run-of-the-mill procedural — another dark, grim...

“We are committed to creating a company culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive for all of members of our CBS and ViacomCBS community,” said Entertainment Group boss George Cheeks in an email to CBS Stations staff today (read the full correspondence below)
Proskauer Rose partner Keisha-Ann Gray has been “engaged” by CBS to conduct the investigation, Cheeks revealed. This all comes out of a LA Times piece published last week that detailed claims President of CBS Television Stations Peter Dunn and Senior Vice President, News David Friend “cultivated a hostile work environment that included bullying female managers and blocking efforts to hire and retain Black journalists.” Dunn was also said to have racist language in...

CBS has set in motion “an external investigation” into allegations of racist and misogynist behavior by senior executives at its local-tv unit, a sign that the ViacomCBS company continues to grapple with these issues even though it has probed them in the recent past.
In a memo sent to staffers Friday, George Cheeks, CEO of CBS Entertainment Group, said the company had hired Keisha-Ann Gray, an attorney from the law firm Proskauer Rose, to examine recent allegations of misconduct levied by a report in the Los Angeles Times that raised issues about the conduct of Peter Dunn, president of CBS Television Stations, and David Friend, senior vice president of news for the stations. The two executives were placed on administrative leave Monday.
“Keisha-Ann is highly experienced in this work, and we believe she is well-suited to examine this matter thoroughly and thoughtfully,” Cheeks said in the memo, which asked staffers...

Two CBS local television executives are on administrative leave starting Monday night after a report by the Los Angeles Times alleges that the bosses engaged in inappropriate conduct towards women and people of color.
A statement from CBS confirmed that President of the CBS Television Stations Peter Dunn and Senior Vice President, News David Friend have been placed on leave, pending the results of a third-party investigation into the number of issues raised in the L.A. Times report.
“CBS is committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace where all voices are heard, claims are investigated and appropriate action is taken where necessary,” the CBS statement added.
The L.A. Times investigation reports that the top bosses “cultivated a hostile work environment that included bullying female managers and blocking efforts to hire and retain Black journalists.” A former employee recalled Dunn making “racist, sexist, homophobic and discriminatory comments.” Other...

Brussels-based company Best Friend Forever has acquired “Mother Schmuckers,” which will world premiere at Sundance. The film marks the feature debut of Lenny and Harpo Guit, and is the first Belgian movie set to play in Sundance’s midnight section.
Set in contemporary Brussels, the film tells the story of two brothers in their twenties, supremely stupid and never bored. When they lose their mother’s beloved dog, they have 24 hours to find it — or she will kick them out. The film’s cast features French star Mathieu Amalric, along with a string of newcomers such as Maxi Delmelle, Harpo Guit and Claire Bodson (“Young Ahmed”).
“We hadn’t laughed that much since ages. The film’s creativity is so refreshing; it’s full of ideas and boasts obvious cult potential,” said Martin Gondre and Charles Bin, Best Friend Forever’s co-founders. “It reminded us of John Waters in a way,...
