Blu-Ray Review: ‘Mamma Mia! The Movie’ Given Gift Set Treatment

24 November 2009 7:30 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Blu-Ray and DVD collectors. Every holiday season, studios pull out their most beloved films, polish up the picture, maybe add a special feature or two, and usually throw in a few collectibles for a gift set. Recent gift set releases include limited edition boxes for “Gone With the Wind,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Christmas Vacation”. The gleefully campy “Mamma Mia! The Movie” seems like a perfect fit and “The Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! More Gift Set” should make fans of the movie happy but is clearly the lowest rung on the ladder when it comes to these season releases.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Before we even get to the movie, what qualifies as a gift set? With recent releases including such unusual items as a watch (“Wizard of Oz”) and fake snow (“Christmas Vacation”), don’t you think a film as weird as “Mamma Mia! »

Trinity Of Terrors: Know Your Spooksmodel - Part II

8 November 2009 10:48 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

For Part I of this series, click here.

In what’s become one of the most anticipated events on the Fangoria calendar, the annual Spooksmodel contest brings to the forefront ladies that are not just pretty faces, but a collection of women that are just as talented as they are beautiful.

This past April, amidst the blazing Los Angeles heat, attendees at our West Coast Fango Con bore witness to the crowning of the latest in an ever-growing contingent of multi-talented women that are gracing the Fango family. After a grueling audition process and even tougher West Coast crowd, Danni Doll, a Los Angeles native, was crowned queen of the bloody heap.  This hometown girl captured the hearts and eyes of the crowd and judges (which included current Spooksmodel Shannon Lark) with an amazingly graceful dance routine that had everyone in awe of her finesse and prowess.

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Turned On, Tuned In: Top Ten Cinematic Trannies

2 October 2009 1:06 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

What's turning me on this week? Transsexuals. Transvestites. Drag queens. It's Fantastic Fest time in Austin, and we here at Reject HQ are celebrating sex in ways you never knew we could. Details notwithstanding, let's just say that both goings-on at the HQ and the line-up of sex on-screen have provided for more than a few eye-openers. From the hyper-evocative Antichrist to the more-than-a-little-bit-fun Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, to vintage smut like The Barebreasted Countess, it's certainly shaping up to be an enlightening week. Fantastic Fest is a time of Asiansploitation, kooky genre films, and titillating images galore. From movies to pole dancing at the new Alamo Drafthouse debauchery venue Highball to drunkenly boarding (not driving) the Reject HQ Party Bus, even I am on sensory overload. Taking a short break from this week-long bender to think about how we bend gender has been especially tough, but I believe it to be important nonetheless. As »

Fangoria presents two Universal Horror Nights haunted houses!

17 September 2009 12:13 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

While talking with Fangoria Radio last week, Jim Timon, Vice President of Entertainment at Universal Studios Orlando, made some special announcements regarding one of Fango’s favorite annual events, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights in the Florida city. This year’s haunted event kicks off its 19th edition next Friday, September 25, and Fangoria Radio (heard every Friday on Sirius Xm Stars satellite radio, Sirius channel 108/Xm channel 139, from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Est) will be on hand!

The show will broadcast live from the scream park (with Debbie Rochon, Clerks’ Brian O’Halloran and Fango editor Tony Timpone hosting), but that’s not all; Fango has a special partnership with the attraction this year. “Fangoria is presenting two of the haunted houses for us. That’s huge,” Timon said. “I walked through ‘em when we were doing a little bit of a rehearsal/review, and you guys are gonna love ‘em. »

MTV Nixes 'Rocky Horror' Remake

15 September 2009 6:01 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Daniel Frankel

Nobody's doing the Time Warp again, after all.

MTV has scuttled earlier-announced plans to do a made-for-cable remake of the 1975 cult musical-horror classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

While not specifying a reason for why the project was killed, a spokeswoman for the Viacom-owned cable channel said the movie has been off the network’s development slate for some time.

A rep for Fox TV Studios, which was to be a co-producer of the film, said the decision to not go forward was ma... »

The 50 Best Gay Movies (2009)

13 September 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).

There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.

This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!

How does this list compare to our previous poll? »

Tiff Review: Jennifer's Body, the Anti-Twilight

11 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Horror and comedy are the best arguments for the superiority of the cinema experience over the small screen, in that you can hear and see whether people around you are enjoying themselves or not. They unite the community. Camp works best in theaters too—you don't see too many people renting The Rocky Horror Picture Show on Netflix. Also high on the list of circumstances that can affect your opinion of a movie is whether or not Megan Fox is in the audience. No wonder I was so pleasantly surprised at the midnight premiere of Jennifer's Body, a campy horror-comedy starring Megan Fox, who was in attendance, as were screenwriter Diablo Cody, director Karyn Kusama, stars Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons and Adam Brody, and producer Jason Reitman, who directed Cody's Oscar-winning first screenplay, Juno, two years ago. Toronto's midnight crowd—a mix of industry folk, press, and panting, drooling Fox-hounds—was energized, »

No Rocky Horror remake. Not yet, anyway

2 September 2009 9:03 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Last year, all the citizens of Transsexual, Transylvania felt a collective disturbance in their fandom force. MTV had announced that they were going to do a remake of the classic cult film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Not only would this be completely unnecessary, but it actually kind of hurt every Rocky fan's soul to hear it. Rocky Horror needs no remake because it never becomes dated. It's so far removed from, well, everything ever, it still holds up perfectly, happily doing the Time Warp again and again in its own little universe.

Well, maybe MTV got lazy or maybe they got freaked out about the insane amount of Internet sad-chatter against the idea of the new version, but MTV's Rocky Horror remake is on hold. Rejoice and prod a gold underwear-clad Adonis with a standing candelabra.Continue reading No Rocky Horror remake. Not yet, anyway

[DVD Review] Ultimate Collections: World War II

24 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

At this point, you have to wonder if the History Channel should be prosecuted for war profiteering. Granted, their continuous Hitler-related programming has been educating the American people for over a decade now, and you can reliably turn the channel on and expect something of greater sophistication than the most recent Two and a Half Men, but it’s hard to think of an industry that owes its existence more to World War II than they do, with the possible exception of bomb shelters and Tom Brokaw’s general career. Nowhere is this dependence on war programming more evident than in their aptly named Ultimate Collections: World War II. Never before has one of the most momentous events in human history been so collectible.

The majority of this four-disc set (which is divided into two sections: The War in Europe and The War in the Pacific) is made up of »

Remember Romero's Diamond Dead?

17 August 2009 5:33 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Many years ago there was talk of a George A. Romero-directed film about a zombie rock band called Diamond Dead. With music from Emmy-winner Richard Hartley (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Dd was perhaps a little ahead of it's time. Attempting to harness the power of the 'net to build awareness of the film at a time just a tad before the boom of social networks like MySpace and Facebook, Diamond Dead never materialized as a feature film.

But last year it spawned a musical...

The following Press Release just arrived here at Fangoria...

The Landless Theatre Company of Washington, DC, joins the 2009 NYC Fringe with 'Diamond Dead', the zombie rock musical by Emmy winning composer Richard Hartley (‘Rocky Horror,’ ‘Alice In Wonderland’). The play is based on a screenplay by Brian Cooper ('Nymph'), and was the winner of the 2008 Capital Fringe Festival Best Musical Pick of The Fringe. »

Actor Barry Bostwick is to divorce his wife of 14 years.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show star and his second wife Sherri cite “irreconcilable differences” for the split, in papers filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday.

Sherri is petitioning for physical and legal custody of their two children, Brian, 14, and 12 year old Chelsea, with Bostwick being granted visitation rights.

She has also filed to terminate any claims he could make for spousal support.

Gore Verbinski To Direct ‘Clue’ Movie

25 February 2009 11:51 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Of all the board games out there, the one which has potential to be at least a decent movie is Clue (or as us Brits know it - Cluedo). For those of you who may not know, there was already a movie of the game made back in 1985 which starred Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd and Michael McKean.

And it seems that Hollywood thinks there’s enough there to warrant another movie based on the game, with the ball set in motion with Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski in final negotiations to direct.

Now I can’t speak for the 1985 film since I haven’t seen it, but I do know that it’s somewhat of a cult film (although with a much smaller following than the likes of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or Donnie Darko) and therefore fans of it will probably end up being »
