A24 is aiming to recreate the breakout success of last year’s Talk to Me by reuniting with Causeway Films (Talk to Me) and Ari Aster’s Square Peg (Hereditary) for a feature length adaptation of Masha Ko‘s Sundance short film The Looming.
Masha Ko will write and direct The Looming.
About the short film: “When a virtual home assistant speaker, Luna, picks up the strange noise Chester has heard in his house, he realizes that it may not be a symptom of dementia.”
The short film stars Joseph Lopez, Kolten Horner, Brianne Buishas, and Alyssa Nicole.
Ko is an award-winning director and human installation artist, with the goal to highlight the stories of individuals who are often overlooked by society and whose lives are rarely celebrated through artistic forms. That’s evident in the premise for her short film, which played in the Midnight Short Film Program at...

“Satan is his father and his name is Adrian!” shouts the coven leader Roman Castevet at the end of 1968’s. Rosemary’s Baby. “He shall overthrow the mighty and lay waste their temples. He shall redeem the despised and wreak vengeance in the name of the burned and the tortured.”
Even when making allowances for Roman’s (Sidney Blackmer) understandable delight at seeing his plan come to fruition, that’s a lot of expectation to put on a newborn, no matter who his father might be. Unfortunately, the sequels chronicling Adrian’s rise to power didn’t quite live up to those expectations. Neither the 1976 TV movie Look What’s Happened to Rosemary’s Baby, in which Patty Duke subs in for Mia Farrow, nor original author Ira Levin’s follow-up book Son of Rosemary (1997) manages to deliver what Roman promised.
But for the next film branching out of Rosemary’s Baby,...

Two years have gone by since a psychological thriller called Apartment 7A – which Relic (watch it Here) director Natalie Erika James helmed for Paramount Players and A Quiet Place collaborators Platinum Dunes and John Krasinski – wrapped filming. Soon after filming came to an end, rumors began to circulate that Apartment 7A was secretly a prequel to the 1968 classic Rosemary’s Baby… and now those rumors have been proven to be true! Deadline broke the news that Apartment 7A will finally be making its way out into the world this fall, as it’s set to receive a Paramount+ release in the U.S. and in select international markets, and in their report they confirmed that this is indeed a Rosemary’s Baby prequel. Maybe the fact that the Omen prequel The First Omen went over well with viewers inspired Paramount to finally release this horror prequel.

Few horror movies in the last several decades have left quite as much a psychological scar as "Rosemary's Baby" from 1968, a widespread cultural obsession among genre fans that has now led to a prequel film called "Apartment 7A," which has long been in the works and finally has a release window.
We first heard about "Apartment 7A" back in 2022, which was meant to tell the story of the eponymous apartment before Rosemary Woodhouse ever moved in and experienced the story's awful events. First told in author Ira Levin's best-selling novel, the main setting of that old, eerie-looking building on Central Park West ranks high among the likes of the Overlook Hotel from "The Shining," the Nostromo in "Alien," and other famous horror locales. Now, we're finally getting an origin story -- of sorts -- with ties going all the way back to the controversial Roman Polanski-directed classic.

Sam Mercer, who produced seven M. Night Shyamalan films including The Sixth Sense, headed Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic and was location manager on several classic 1980s pics, has died. He was 69.
His wife Tegan Jones told Deadline that Mercer died February 12 of younger-onset Alzheimer’s.
“He was the best big brother I could have hoped for,” Shyamalan said in a statement. “He made every movie a family, and I’ve tried to emulate that in every film since.”
Mercer moved to Los Angeles from Weston, Ma, to work in the movie industry. He began his career as a location manager on such 1980s gems as Stripes, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Peggy Sue Got Married and The Witches of Eastwick before moving to Walt Disney Studios.

January is here. That’s the time when studios will traditionally and unceremoniously dump movies in which they don’t have a lot of confidence. That usually includes a lot of horror movies. But last year, January gave us such well-received offerings as M3GAN, Knock at the Cabin, and Skinamarink. So, what does this January have in store for us? We shall see. First up – the new Blumhouse Studios movie Night Swim.
Night Swim is about a former baseball player named Ray Waller (Overlord’s Wyatt Russell) who is suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. Along with his wife Eve (Kerry Condon from The Banshees of Inisherin) and kids Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and Elliot (Fear the Walking Dead’s Gavin Warren), he seems to find...

The latest from “The Platform” co-producers Mr Miyagi and rising shock meister Hugo Cardozo will be sneak peeked as pix-in-post at this year’s Ventana Sur Blood Window Screenings.
Both are sold, and Cardozo’s “Do Not Enter” produced by Guido Rud’s FilmSharks as sales agents, as this week’s American Film Market attests, are driving ever more into horror genre.
Unlike action thrillers and romantic comedies, the other go-to movie types in a market ever more attuned to streamer tastes, that could be that horror doesn’t need name actors. Mister Smith Ent.’s David Garrett said before the AFM.

Directed by Japanese-Australian filmmaker Natalie Erika James, "Relic" features many familiar horror tropes: a mysterious elderly woman; a dark, decaying house with hidden passageways; and strange and unexplained occurrences that might be the work of paranormal forces. But this is not a typical haunted house movie about the struggle between good and evil. As James explained in an interview with Refinery29 when the film first released:
"I'm trying to find inventive ways to earn the scare that's psychologically scary rather than a loud noise that makes you jump no matter what the image is. Time, and what it does to those we love, is the true villain of this story — if one can even call it that. There's nothing evil in the film, really. It's not so simple."
Instead, "Relic" explores the bone-chilling inevitability of growing old — both observing this process with your parents, and potentially losing your own memories and life history.

One of the great unsung traditions of horror is a character’s external environment reflecting their internal state. It has found its way into films as diverse as Repulsion (1965), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), and Relic (2020) to name just a few. Edgar Allan Poe was hardly the first to use the device, it had been a feature of the Gothic romances popular in the decades before him, but Poe moved it from character-deepening subtext to overt metaphor in his short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Roger Corman’s 1960 film adaptation of the story latches onto and expands this and several of Poe’s obsessions into what has become a classic of slow-burning terror. The Fall of the House of Usher is the first in what has come to be called the Corman Poe Cycle. These eight films produced between 1960 and 1964 are among the most stylish,...

It isn’t news that a veritable fount of films becomes newly available to consumers each and every month. Between original movies on Netflix, the latest blockbusters fresh out of theaters, and other buzzy titles arriving across platforms, it can be overwhelming to sort through the myriad streamers to find the hidden gems you wouldn’t see otherwise.
But one of the best things about streaming is just that: It gives independent cinema a chance — no matter how small that chance may be! — to reach a wider audience long after a title’s release. Movies that had limited runs in theaters, or departed quickly after bombing at the box office, are now available at the tips of anyone’s fingers with the right subscription. From foreign features to obscure older classics, the Criterion Channel helps provide access to rare titles that prove difficult to chase down on DVD. While specialty sites like Shudder,...

In this time of geekery and craft reigning supreme, film critics and academics no longer reject horror movies with the knee-jerk certainty some once did. But even now the specter of “elevated horror” (see that concept’s lambasting in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “Scream 5”) looms over discussions of artier explorations of dread and terror — Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” Rose Glass’ “Saint Maud” — that are clearly distinguished from, well, non-elevated horror. The general gist is that these exceptions to the “horror is bad” rule engage your brain more than just showing brains: eaten by zombies or splattered against the wall.
How can films that fire your adrenal glands, send shivers down your spine, raise goosebumps, and quicken your breath — that inspire such an intense physical reaction — also be cerebral experiences? The answer is obvious enough. Viewers forget all the time that, as Anna Karina...

Sarah Snook is stuck in a twisted game of hide and seek with the daughter she thought she knew.
The “Succession” actress leads Daina Reid’s feature directorial debut “Run Rabbit Run,” which premiered at 2023 Sundance. Snook plays Sarah, a mother and fertility doctor whose own daughter Mia’s behavior drastically becomes more and more unhinged upon her seventh birthday. Damon Herriman and Greta Scacchi also star.
Director Reid has previously helmed episodes of “The Shining Girls” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” both starring Elisabeth Moss who was once attached to “Run Rabbit Run.” The script is penned by Australian novelist Hannah Kent, with an original idea developed by Carver Films. Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw of Carver serve as producers, with Snook executive producing along with director Reid.

Following a premiere at Sundance 2023, where Netflix picked up the psychological horror film for an undisclosed sum, the streaming service has set a June 28 release date and unveiled the first trailer for "Run Rabbit Run." With Sarah Snook ("Succession") in the lead, Australian director Daina Reid's second feature film is about a single mother and fertility doctor named Sarah (Snook) who is shaken by her 7-year-old daughter Mia's (Lily Latorre) strange behavior and "inexplicable memories of a past identity."
The connection, as the "Run Rabbit Run" trailer reveals, is Sarah's late sister Alice who had an interest in wild rabbits and went missing when she was just seven years old. Mia turns out to have both things in common with Alice when she takes a liking to a rabbit that appears on their doorstep. You know where this is going, right? Mia believes she's Alice and seemingly begins turning on her mother,...

Through films as varied as “The Father,” “Dick Johnson Is Dead” and “Relic,” dementia and neurodegenerative disease have been extensively portrayed on screen in recent years — a subgenre that carries a trigger warning for anyone with off-screen experience of the subject. For those who think they cannot stomach one more, Maite Alberdi’s “The Eternal Memory” treats inexorably sad material with a lighter, more lyrical approach than most — focusing less on the day-to-day ravages of living with Alzheimer’s than on the slippery, transient concept of memory itself, as formed, held and lost both in the individual mind and a wider collective consciousness. Key to the film’s thesis is that its subject is Augusto Góngora, a veteran Chilean political journalist who labored through the 1970s and 1980s to bring the iniquities of the Pinochet regime to public attention — and later dedicated himself to conserving that national memory for future generations.

Almost every horror fan enjoys a good creature feature, but sometimes it can be hard to find one that plays it mostly straight without descending into complete self-parody. Peter Hyams’ The Relic is just that kind of monster movie, presenting an air of sophistication that distracts you from its roots in outright schlock.
It was one of the few times that Hyams—who has many thriller, sci-fi, and action films in his credits—jumped into the horror pool. Previously, he ventured into supernatural territory with the 1992 fantasy comedy Stay Tuned, which saw John Ritter and Pam Dawber running through a satellite dish system powered by Hell. It wasn’t exactly what many would call horror, but still, check it out if you haven’t—there’s some good dark comedy jokes that would make readers of this site cackle.

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has picked up world sales rights to Ángeles Hernández’s supernatural horror film “El faro” (“The Lighthouse”), set up at Mr. Miyagi Films, co-producer of Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s multi-awarded Netflix smash hit “The Platform.”
“The Lighthouse” ended shooting in May; FilmSharks is showing first footage to buyers at Cannes.
Film toplines Spanish film and TV star Hugo Silva plus Irene Montalà (“Un asunto privado”), Zoe Arnao and Sergio Castellanos.
Produced by Hernández and David Matamoros at Barcelona-based Mr. Miyagi, “The Lighthouse” turns on Lidia and her father, Pablo, returning to the family lighthouse after her mother’s death.
Pablo, aware of Lidia’s fragile emotional balance, worries about a possible relapse after her suicide attempt. Lidia, annoyed by her father’s lack of trust, discovers that something’s not right at the lighthouse, and that dire danger awaits them if they do not find out the truth.

After the 2000s seemingly kickstarted a new wave of independent horror, the 2010s (and beyond) were an exceptional time for new and emerging, as well as established, filmmakers to leave their own mark on the landscape of genre storytelling. One of the most notable aspects, or even trends, that I noticed while doing research for this entire series of retrospectives is how out of all of the decades, it feels like the 2010s was one of the best times for female filmmakers to get the opportunity to take the helm in comparison to other decades. The 1980s had a handful of women directors working in independent horror, but during both the ’90s and ’00s, it felt like the industry as a whole had taken a few steps backwards in providing female filmmakers the opportunity to tell the stories they wanted to tell.

The so-called “elevated” horror genre has lately been overrun with stories in which supernatural creepings function as a metaphor for psychological trauma and dysfunction. At first through-the-fingers glance, “You Are Not My Mother” appears to be following suit, centering as it does on an isolated teenage girl haunted by the unpredictable rhythms of her mother’s debilitating mental illness. But this pervasively eerie, emotionally acute debut from Irish writer-director Kate Dolan doesn’t trade in neat symbolism or pat explanations: Steeped in local folklore, it lets mythic and mind-based terrors exist side by side, allowing the viewer to interpret and believe what they will. This leeway comes at no cost, however, to its effective atmospherics, which sink into the bones like an unexpected twilight chill.
Now getting a limited theatrical run Stateside, Dolan’s film was a highlight of last year’s Midnight Madness selection at Toronto, though that label...

Netflix’s newest bingeable mystery is here.
“Pieces of Her” stars Toni Collette as Laura, a small-town woman recovering from a bout of illness with the help of her adult daughter, Andy (Bella Heathcote). With the edges of their already fraught relationship worn thin by the wearying toll of Laura’s treatment, the mother-daughter duo finds their lives thrown into complete upheaval after a random shooting — and the media attention that follows — puts them in the spotlight, exposing them to deadly figures from Laura’s past… a past that Andy knows nothing about.
As usual, Netflix has filled out their ensemble with familiar faces, up-and-comers and new discoveries so we’ve put together a handy (and spoiler-free) guide to the cast and characters of “Pieces of Her” to help you keep up with every twist and turn.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a universal language for loss? Imagine if in all the letting go, in all the unlearning of what was, there was something to grasp—not only a pattern to comprehend, but a way to understand each other while everything else dissolves? Oh, if we could learn the language. Maybe we’d catch how pain serrates our words before it cuts others. Maybe we too could experience the cathartic and collective wail Midsommar’s Dani felt, that bittersweet mixture of feeling our darkest of feelings without shame and in loving, nurturing hands. If loss had a language, it’d have countless dialects for innumerable sorrows.
Even after a decade of living it, I still don’t know how to talk about losing my father to dementia. Just when I think I’ve lost all I could, I discover something new to let go of: memory,...

Exclusive: UK distributor-producer Signature Entertainment has been re-acquired by its original stakeholders after being bought by completion guarantee firm Ffi in early 2018.

Following the buy-back, Goldberg is the largest shareholder, alongside West Ham soccer club owner David Sullivan, Jon Bourdillon (COO) Gareth Williams (Fd), Elizabeth Williams (Director of Acquisitions and Development) and Claire Loewenthal (Head of Marketing).
We’re told the sale came about due to Ffi wanting “to focus on their core businesses which support both pre and post production.” Soon after buying Signature, Ffi was itself bought by Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners.

The Gotham Awards will announce nominations tomorrow and expected to lead the charge, primarily due to the changes in the number of nominees allowed in new categories, are Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut “The Lost Daughter” from Netflix and Fran Kranz’s “Mass” from Bleecker Street.
The Gotham Film & Media Institute, which oversees the Gotham Awards, announced in August that awards for acting would no longer be defined by gender.
Last year’s Gotham for best picture went to “Nomadland,” which went on to win the Oscar for best picture. In a Gotham Awards first, the entire feature category was comprised of women directors. The tea leaves don’t necessarily point to another historic showing, but one film feels for sure, and that’s Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name.

On October 16, 2001, Smallville premiered on The WB. The show examined Clark Kent’s origin story, his relationship with his adoptive parents, his rivalry with Lex Luthor, and the many adventures he and his friends had.
It’s been 20 years since the Kents first found Clark in the fields, and we couldn’t let this memorable anniversary pass without paying tribute to this iconic series.
TV Fanatic staff writers, Laura Nowak, Paul Dailly, and Leora Waltuch discussed what they loved about the series, how Alison Mack’s scandal affected their feelings toward Chloe, and what they thought of Clark and Lois’s appearance in the post-Smallville story.
What enticed you to watch Smallville in 2001?
Leora: My father got me into Smallville and Superman. Now Superman is my go-to superhero and a large part of that comes down to growing up with Smallville. Also, as an aspiring journalist, I really admired Chloe.

What enticed you to watch Smallville in 2001?
Leora: My father got me into Smallville and Superman. Now Superman is my go-to superhero and a large part of that comes down to growing up with Smallville. Also, as an aspiring journalist, I really admired Chloe.

Jake Gyllenhaal is circling Guy Ritchie's next movie. By "next," we mean, the next one Ritchie shoots, as opposed to the next one he releases.
Deadline reports that the as-yet-untitled film is lining up at Miramax, with Ritchie set to write and direct. At this point, we know next to nothing about it beyond that, but we can let our imagination run wild with the possibilities of what a Ritchie-directed film with Gyllenhaal might look like.
Though he's maintained some producing credits like "Relic" and "The Devil All the Time," Gyllenhaal's filmography as an actor went quiet in 2020. He was just at the Tony Awards last month, where...

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up to Howard Stern (via The Independent) this week on the difficulties of acting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “a whole different craft.” Gyllenhaal starred as Quentin Beck/Mysterio opposite Tom Holland in the 2019 summer tentpole “Spider Man: Far From Home.” The MCU entry grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Gyllenhaal said the script was always flexible while making the movie, with lines being substituted for better ones at any given moment.
“It’s hard, man. That acting is hard. All of it,” Gyllenhaal said. “That world is enormous. And I joined that world way into that run; a train that was already moving. Normally, I come in way early on and I get to figure it out.”
Acting in the MCU was such a dramatic change of pace for Gyllenhaal that it resulted in bouts of anxiety on set. Or as Gyllenhaal put it, “I was freaking out.

I've worked remotely for more than 15 years, so the transition to pandemic life wasn't as jarring as it was for some, but even I wasn't mentally prepared for will likely be 2+ years of us being in lockdown. It's been a real struggle to watch anything that's super serious (I'm still waiting to see Relic!), and I've turned to some of my favorites as horror movie comfort food, including... The Monster Club!
Those who have listened to our Corpse Club podcast over the years know that this has been a favorite of mine for quite some time now. It's easily the movie I've watched the most in the last ten years and no other movie comes close, but it isn't nostalgia driving my interest in re-watching this. I didn't see the movie until maybe 10-15 years ago, but thanks to the Code Red Blu-ray release, it's been a regular watch ever since.

The latest limited series from Netflix looks to be drawing on a lot of topics seen swirling around social media, from bad men to internet conspiracy theories. Basedon the first trailer, which you can see below, “Clickbait” aims to be an edgy look at the ways we examine people and the simmering secrets that lie underneath.
The series tells the story of Nick Brewer (Adrien Grenier) who one day disappears. As his wife (Betty Gabriel) and sister (Zoe Kazan) start looking for him, a livestream pops up showing Nick holding signs alleging he’s beaten and murdered women. When the videos hit five million views Nick will die. Are the allegations true? Do they prove the seemingly perfect family man has something to hide? Or is this part of a twisted game by the kidnapper to illustrate the danger within society’s snap judgements?
