I have some sad news to report today. Actor Bernard Hill passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed by his agent, Lou Coulson.
Hill is known for playing Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Titanic and notably for playing Theoden King of Rohan in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. He also played Luther Plunkitt in Clint Eastwood’s True Crime.
He played many other roles, including Yosser Hughes in the BBC show Boys from the Blackstuff. Hill was due to return to TV on the second series of The Responder with Martin Freeman on BBC.
According to the BBC, Hill was supposed to appear at Comic Con Liverpool on Saturday but was canceled.
We’re heartbroken to hear the news of Bernard Hill’s passing. A great loss. Thinking of his family at this very sad time, and wishing them a lot of strength.

You may know him as a certain superhero, but Chris Hemsworth has a wealth of film roles that go beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After getting his big break on a TV show (the Australian soap opera Home and Away), Hemsworth pivoted to films in the early 2000s — and has only seen growing success since then. In fact, when Extraction dropped in the summer of 2020, its first four weeks saw the largest audience of any other Netflix original movie at the time.
Now, three years later, there’s even more Extraction action to stream. With Extraction 2 out now, there’s no better time to revisit some of the actor’s most memorable movie roles. From Rush and Spiderhead to Snow White and the Huntsman, these films will have you worshipping at the altar of the son of Odin.

With films like The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick’s legacy will live on for centuries to come. During his life and even after his death in 1999, he’s widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers to have ever graced the film industry with his talent. But even a man of his caliber had to have been a fan of someone, and that “someone” for Stanley Kubrick was none other than James Cameron.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980)
James Cameron has been responsible for helming some of the most unforgettable and successful films in Hollywood. Therefore, it makes sense that Stanley Kubrick would be in awe of some of his work, and the feeling was mutual between the directors. When James Cameron decided to give himself a birthday present by meeting Stanley Kubrick, he was shocked to learn just how much of a True Lies fan he was.

Stars: Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, Matt Damon | Written by Ethan Coen, Tricia Clarke | Directed by Ethan Coen
Directed by Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the script with his wife, Tricia Clarke, Drive-Away Dolls (previously known as Drive-Away Dykes) is a queer road movie-slash-crime caper anchored by a pair of delightful performances by co-leads Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. The plot is admittedly slight and the jokes will almost certainly prove too puerile for some tastes, but it has attitude to spare and the fun characters carry it through.
Set in 1999, on the eve of Y2K, the film begins in Philadelphia, where Texan good-time-girl Jamie (Qualley) has just broken up with her hot-tempered cop lover Sukie (Beanie Feldstein). Needing to get out of town, Jamie jumps at the chance to accompany her strait-laced lesbian best friend Marian (Viswanathan) on a road trip to Tallahassee,...

I’ve been interviewing people for a long time, but as a child of the 80s, one of my bucket list interviews has always been Michael Keaton. Not only was he Batman and Beetlejuice, but he also starred in a whole bunch of childhood favourites of mine, including Johnny Dangerously (coming soon to The Best Movie You Never Saw), The Dream Team, Gung-Ho, and even a drama he did called Clean & Sober, which for some reason I enjoyed as a child.
Keaton’s in the middle of a great career resurgence that began with Birdman. Fresh off his Batman stare-down at the Oscars, Keaton is in theaters this week with his film noir throwback Knox Goes Away. In it, he plays a hitman stricken with early-onset dementia. The fast-moving illness is set to destroy his memory (hence the title) completely, and as if that weren’t bad enough, his...

With its breakneck pace, 90-second songs, and rants against animal testing, Gouge Away’s 2016 debut, Dies, placed the band’s sound squarely within the hardcore template. But the band’s range of influences runs deeper, a fact that’s evident even from their name, which was inspired by the Pixies song. Their third studio album, Deep Sage, finds Gouge Away evolving even further toward the ‘90s noise-rock sound they introduced on 2018’s Burnt Sugar.
Singer Christina Michelle shouted her way through Gouge Away’s early songs, but she shows a broader vocal range across Deep Sage’s 11 tracks. “Stuck in a Dream,” for one, pulses with fury as she repeats its minimal lyrics—“God, I just want to wake up/Up up up up up”—but her howls on this song and others are juxtaposed by passages of more melodic singing.

The night of The Academy Awards is finally here, and the accolades are being handed out to the nominee who has truly raised the bar in their nominated categories. Thus, many might not be surprised to know that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated masterpiece, titled The Boy and the Heron, took home the Oscar for Best Animated Film.
A still from The Boy and the Heron
Many from the audience and fans of Studio Ghibli called this decision by The Academy to be one of the most deserving in recent years, and thus, the right choice. But there are also fans of Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, the other frontrunner in the race to win this award, who believe that the film was wrongfully snubbed at the ceremony.

Anime, the Japanese style of hand-drawn animation, is widely popular around the globe. Manga artist Akira Toriyama played an instrumental role in its widespread renown, as he gifted the world pieces such as Dr. Slump and Dragonball, the latter being his most popular work to date.
Akira Toriyama’s manga have been successfully adapted in the past. Dragon Ball was the anime that caught the imagination of the Western world. It has been subsequently adapted into cartoons and even a live-action film, Dragonball Evolution.
However, when Hollywood tried to wade into his rich world, the result left the artist extremely dissatisfied, and the film based on Goku’s life failed miserably. The creator, Akira Toriyama, increasingly expressed his disappointment with the way Hollywood butchered his carefully crafted world.

Michael Giacchino's score for the hit ABC series "Lost" is the greatest musical score in television history. A few other composers have come close in the years since the show went off the air, but for my money, Giacchino's masterful score not only perfectly matched the series' stunning visuals over six seasons, but it whisked the audience through rousing, suspenseful, romantic, heartbreaking, propulsive, and mysterious scenes with the types of memorable melodies and repeated leitmotifs that seem to have fallen out of favor in blockbuster filmmaking these days.
While some of the show's music has been available on vinyl before, the full score for season 1 has only recently been made available on that format for the very first time. Varabese Sarabande is selling the score for $38.00 as a 2-lp edition in a silver foil gatefold jacket featuring notes from co-creators J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and the maestro Michael Giacchino himself.

The Crown Registered 57 Million Viewing Hours On Netflix After Queen Elizabeth Passed Away ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
One of the most loved shows on Netflix, The Crown, has finally ended its long run, and the audiences cannot get over this fact yet. While many have refrained from watching the finale episode since it is too heartbreaking for them to bid adieu to their favorite show, others simply do not want to kill the majestic impact of the previous seasons by watching the underwhelming sixth season.

Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Dan Stevens (Legion), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) and McKinley Belcher III (Ozark) are among the new cast revealed for Netflix’s Zero Day. The limited series will also feature Gaby Hoffman (Transparent), Clark Gregg (Painkiller) and Mark Ivanir (Away) in guest-starring roles.
Zero Day is in production in New York with Robert De Niro starring and executive producing.
Zero Day asks the question: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?
At the center of the narrative is De Niro’s Mullen, a popular but complicated figure who is yanked back from retirement to head up a commission investigating a global cyberattack.

In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.
Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

The 39th International Documentary Awards have announced their shortlists for the best nonfiction entries of the year, with a ceremony to take place during the week of Dec. 11 in Los Angeles in a venue to be named. The films were selected by independent committees comprised of 280 documentary makers, curators, critics, and industry experts from 40 countries. IDA received 669 total submissions in all categories from 48 countries.
New York Times Op-Docs dominated the Documentary Short category with seven mentions, including entries from the Netherlands (“Neighbour Abdi”), Mexico (“Victoria”) and Hungary (“Away”) among the shortlisted selections. The Documentary Feature category appeared to favor less-buzzy international titles this season.
What is surprising about the IDA shortlist is how many of the year’s presumed top contenders are not included. Of the 21 nonfiction films that have been nominated by the Critics Choice Documentary Awards or placed on the Doc NYC shortlist of likely awards titles, only...

Now Sennott’s back with Bottoms, one of two new movies she’s headlining this week, and which adopts many characteristics of an SXSW offering: it’s gay, it’s bloody, and it’s horny. – Jake K. Robert Shiver’s estranged wife has been arrested for allegedly hiring a hitman.
Savannah Chrisley has a new man in her life. On the latest episode of “The Viall Files” podcast, the 26-year-old reality star revealed that she’s dating Robert Shiver, the former Auburn football player whose wife, Lindsay Shiver, allegedly tried to hire a hitman to have him killed.
“This guy that I’m talking to, his wife just tried to kill him. It’s fine,” Savannah told host Nick Viall. “It was a thing. He’s a normal person and I love it.”
Nick then began trying to uncover the man’s identity, causing Savannah to declare, “I’m sweating.” After some online searches, Nick came across a photo of Robert, and Savannah quickly remarked, “That’s an old photo,” which made the “Bachelor” alum believe he was on the right track.

The protagonist of Knox Goes Away, starring and directed by Michael Keaton, is one of the most low-energy hired killers in cinema history. There’s reason for this: early on audiences discover that John Knox is suffering from a form of dementia––one that moves much faster than Alzheimer’s, he is told––that will cause him to start losing his memory in a matter of “weeks, not months.” That news would be difficult for anyone, but it’s especially problematic for someone whose livelihood depends on his abilities to act decisively, move covertly, and always cover his tracks.
So it’s not going to be easy for Knox to finish off his career as a hitman and cash out. Worse yet it’s also not easy for audiences to become invested in that process. Knox Goes Away is a sub-par effort that may prove of interest to fans of the actor,...

Ryan Reynolds had a couple of nerve-racking moments when working alongside Denzel Washington in Safe House. On one occasion, Reynolds almost risked angering his disciplined co-star by accidentally sabotaging their scene.

Reynolds was paired with the Oscar-winner for the first time when Washington played a villain in their 2012 thriller. Washington was already a huge incentive for Reynolds to climb on board the project. Seeing as Washington was one of Reynolds’ favorite stars, he wanted to make a good impression. Acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, The Boy And The Heron (aka How Do You Live?), hit Japanese theatres on Friday, July 14 with no advance publicity apart from a title and a poster.
The move was a deliberate ploy by Studio Ghibli head Toshio Suzuki to encourage audiences to see Miyazaki’s first film in a decade without preconceptions. “A poster and a title – that’s all we got when we were children. I enjoyed trying to imagine what a movie was about, and I wanted to bring that feeling back,” Suzuki told Japanese broadcaster Nhk.
ComScore reported a $13.2M opening weekend for the film, distributed by Toho, with IMAX saying it set a new three-day opening record with $1.7M from 44 screens.
Reactions from Japan-based critics, none of which were offered advance screenings, are mixed but mostly favourable.

Dolly Parton’s upcoming rock album, Rockstar, is a behemoth. It consists of 30 songs, mostly covers and a few Parton originals, performed by Parton and an incredible roster of guests. While most people wouldn’t say no to Parton, a few artists couldn’t appear on Rockstar, but it wasn’t because they didn’t want to.
Dolly Parton said Mick Jagger wasn’t able to appear on her rock album
After being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Dolly Parton made her first rock album. However, she wasn’t going to do it without some help. Son Mike W. Beasley writes on Facebook, “Man…you know this is a part of life…but that doesn’t make it any easier. I lost my best friend today. They say you shouldn’t ever meet your heroes because they don’t turn out to be who you thought they were. That is so wrong. My hero was my father. Thank you for everything. I hope I made you proud. Max is finally here. Back in April, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the company's new streaming service, which combines the libraries of HBO Max and Discovery+, completely replacing the former. Shows like "Succession" and "The White Lotus" will live side by side with "Property Brothers" and "Flip or Flop." In a press release, the company described Max as an "enhanced streaming service." The new website, max.com, launched May 23.
News of plans for a joint streaming service first broke in August 2022, with CEO David Zaslav sharing it during a quarterly earnings call. Both HBO Max and Discovery+ reach a combined 92 million subscribers, per the quarterly earnings report, and the company hopes to reach 130 million global subscribers by 2025. Jean-Briac Perrette, Discovery's CEO, said at the time that he hoped the new streamer will be the best of both worlds. "We recognize that both of our existing products have shortcomings," he said during the call.

On “The Narcissist,” Blur’s first new song in eight years, Damon Albarn sings about looking in the mirror and seeing a Pierrot (a commedia dell’arte clown) looking back at him as he attempts to rebuild his ego. “If you see darkness look away,” he sings at one point, before the upbeat chorus kicks in: “I’m going to shine a light in your eyes/You will probably shine it back on me/But I won’t fall this time.” The track is the first taste of the band’s upcoming album,...

Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

Tales of hardened, violent loners picking up lively, younger traveling companions are certainly having a moment. Whether it's "The Last of Us," "The Mandalorian," "The Witcher," or a movie like "The Gray Man," they seem to be every which way you turn in the world of streaming these days.
