Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

The Israeli government’s efforts to reserve state funding only for films that uphold the regime’s far-right agenda is causing growing alarm among local filmmakers.
Since taking office in December, culture minister Miki Zohar has pushed for new requirements that would force artists and filmmakers to guarantee their works will not tarnish Israel’s reputation or that of its military. He also examined the possibility of forcing the producers of the documentaries “H2: The Occupation Lab” and “Two Kids A Day” to pay back state funding for the films.
The move comes against the backdrop of planned reforms by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government — which is believed to be the most right-wing regime in Israel’s history — that include the possible gutting of public television in the name of free market competition.

Movie mistakes come in a lot of different forms. Sometimes they're inconsequential gaffes, minor continuity errors, or shaky science. Sure, they're occasionally noticeable, but "The Shining" is still "The Shining," even if the infamous hedge maze is missing from the first overhead shot of the hotel. "Moonfall" is still "Moonfall," even if the moon would never quite fall like that. It's part of the filmmaking process itself. Some of it is practicality — like empty mugs movie characters toss around — and some is simply a matter of rushed schedules and truncated budgets.
Still, some mistakes are more consequential. Especially in horror films, these mistakes can make or break a movie, sucking the scares right out of the film reels. This list specifically focuses on small mistakes that almost ruined horror masterpieces. Luckily, most of these were addressed prerelease, leaving audiences with the classics they know and love today. While not every...

Horror themed, metalcore band Ice Nine Kills is back with “The Shower Scene,” a brand new Nsfw music video that pays tribute to Psycho from the album, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome To Horrorwood.
Frontman Spencer Charnas, a big time horror fan and guest star on Bloody Disgusting’s new scripted podcast series Bleeders DIEgest, plays Norman Bates in the video, recreating iconic moments from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic. “The Shower Scene” music video is nestled within an ongoing story for the Welcome To Horrorwood album, though.
Charnas also plays himself, on trial for murder. It’s here that the video cuts loose with the notable horror cameos. Horror host Joe Bob Briggs presides over the courtroom as the judge and brings his drive-in totals to the case. Also look for Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare), Scout Taylor-Compton, and Bill Moseley.

Rob Zombie’s upcoming “The Munsters” reboot is rated PG, the filmmaker announced on Instagram this week. The rating makes sense given that “The Munsters” is based on the family-oriented sitcom that gained popularity in the 1960s, but many fans speculated what kind of “Munsters” film the reboot would be given the involvement of Zombie. The director behind violent and twisted horror films such as “House of 1000 Corpses” and “3 from Hell” doesn’t exactly scream family friendly.
“For those of you speculating, wondering and assuming that ‘The Munsters’ would be dirty, violent and nasty…well, you are wrong,” Zombie wrote on Instagram while announcing his reboot’s PG rating. “It’s all good down on Mockingbird Lane.”

Every film franchise has its odd one out. You know, the one that makes a lot of fans wince or see red at the mere mention of it. For the Friday the 13th series, it’s probably Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. For the Candyman series, it’s very likely to be Candyman 3: Day of the Dead. And for the Halloween series, it’s most definitely Halloween: Resurrection.
I’ve seen countless Halloween fans often rank the 2002 slasher as the worst of the series, and this contempt certainly shows in its Internet Movie Database user rating. Today, it holds a 4.0 out of 10, the lowest of the entire series. Even Halloween co-creator John Carpenter, who avoided watching many of the sequels he wasn’t involved in, took the time to throw shade on the film.
“I watched the one in that house, with all the cameras,” Carpenter told TooFab in 2018. “Oh my god.

Michael Myers is finally returning to theaters this fall with Halloween Kills, the second installment of the rebooted horror film series that wiped the franchise canon of every single sequel that followed the original Halloween in 1978. But that’s not stopping Neca from staying true to the original sequels with a Halloween II action figure […]

“You can’t kill the bogeyman!” little Tommy Doyle says to babysitter Laurie Strode at the climax of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). A couple years later—and some $80 million dollars later—the man who started it all, movie mogul and producer Irwin Yablans, agreed and launched Halloween II on Friday, October 30th, 1981. Let’s begin with a simple truth: sequels are to movie fans as drugs are to drug addicts: fans are chasing that first high knowing, over time, that it’s nearly impossible a sequel will ever outdo or even match the first. But we keep trying, don’t we? Now, Halloween II is not as good as its predecessor, but it is a damn fine sequel that finishes telling the story of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers on Halloween night. But let’s not forget Halloween H20 in 1998. Oh, and then there were those Zombie ones. And, of course,...

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...

David Gordon Green’s forthcoming slasher film Halloween Kills is set to continue the story of Laurie Strode, the former sister of Michael Myers and sole survivor of his initial spree of killings in Haddonfield, Illinois. Laurie’s genealogical relationship to Michael was revealed in Rick Rosenthal’s 1981 sequel Halloween II, a movie that was retconned away and replaced by Green’s 2018 film Halloween, which was itself both a direct legacy sequel to the 1978 Compass International classic as well as the opening installment of a new Halloween trilogy by Blumhouse Productions, who acquired the rights to the franchise after Dimension Films let them lapse following Rob Zombie’s 2009 sequel to his 2007 reboot.

Blumhouse successfully relaunched the Halloween franchise back in 2018 and now, after a year out, Michael Myers is returning once again this October for the first half of a massive two-part finale that promises to end the saga of Myers vs. Laurie Strode once and for all.
Halloween Kills will again star Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie, with another character from the 1978 original featuring, too: Tommy Doyle, once the young boy babysat by Laurie when the Shape attacked. As fans will know, Paul Rudd first played an adult Tommy back in 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Since then, of course, Rudd’s career has exploded and he was unable to reprise his role in Kills due to his prior commitment to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Shooting began this September on Halloween Kills, the sequel to David Gordon Green’s update on the Halloween franchise, and the first of two confirmed follow-up films. We already know that the movies are bringing back most of the cast and characters from the 1978 original, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Nick Castle, and a new actor as Tommy Doyle, and now, it’s been revealed that Nancy Stephens has signed on to reprise her role as Nurse Marion Chambers as well.
Stephens already returned in Halloween II and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, but Nurse Marion will be retrofitted to the new movies’ continuity, which disregards the sequels to John Carpenter’s first film. Fans of the Halloween franchise will know that Nurse Marion was a key part of the original story though, whereby she accompanied Donald Pleasence’s Sam Loomis to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium on the night Myers breaks free.

With the new Halloween finally making its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Jamie Lee Curtis was on hand to supply a few last-minute thoughts, and it seems that the actress has no regrets about wiping the series timeline clean (again) for David Gordon Green’s new slasher movie.
Though the Blumhouse production is the eleventh installment in the long-running horror franchise, Halloween essentially throws out every entry since the classic 1978 original, reducing their presence to brief nods at best. While the move has proven controversial with fans – especially the eradication of Halloween II’s famous sibling twist – Curtis seems pretty pleased with the arrangement, telling Deadline that the cumulation of plot points from the various Halloween sequels was getting a bit much to deal with.

As a sequel to the most iconic slasher movie of all time, the new “Halloween” sets itself up for failure. Forty years after silent killer Michael Myers donned a leathery white mask and hacked up a handful of teens in John Carpenter’s 1978 original, this campy follow-up acknowledges that a lot has happened since then. As one young character complains when considering the mythology early on, by today’s standards Myers’ killing spree is “not that big a deal.”
It’s hard to argue the point: Years have passed since the self-referential horror of the “Scream” franchise, not to mention snazzier home invasion thrillers from “You’re Next” to “The Babadook” that took the “Halloween” mold to fresh heights. Carpenter’s disturbed psychopath was a gift to the genre, but it moved on long ago. Even the idea of rebooting “Halloween” has become a redundant conceit, across seven discardable sequels...

You’ve seen the spooky posters and watched as The Shape haunts Haddonfield once more, but tonight, Blumhouse has rolled out the official international trailer for Halloween, which is all about Laurie Strode going toe-to-toe with her old nemesis.
Because even after 40 years spent in captivity, Michael Myers is still the ominous force of nature we first met in ’78, and this afternoon’s trailer reveal is living proof that director David Gordon Green and co-writer Danny McBride have honored John Carpenter’s original classic in every which way. Moreover, did you spot the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it callback to Halloween II? We’ll give you a clue: it involves Haddonfield resident Mrs. Elrod.
Suffice it to say, Halloween is the kind of movie that will be discussed ad naseaum for its Easter eggs and deep-seated horror legacy. And if you’re still itching for another preview of the October pic, up above...

Evil is real.
Those three words uttered by Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) eloquently sum up Halloween‘s chilling second trailer, in which the boogeyman himself, Michael Myers, manages to escape confinement after 40 years spent behind bars.
His first port of call? To resume that twisted killing spree from 1978. But not all of Haddonfield’s residents are concerned by the resurgent Michael Myers; as a matter of fact, during one of the trailer’s quieter moments, Laurie’s eldest daughter Karen (Judy Greer) advises her mother to seek help for obsessing over an elusive ghost from yesteryear.
And yet, Laurie Strode remains resolute in her commitment to killing the Shape once and for all, and while a number of horror fans feared that Halloween would ruin their childhoods, the overriding consensus appears to be that the David Gordon Green-directed pic is among the most-anticipated movies of 2018. And for good reason,...

As fans have been prepared to expect, Blumhouse’s new Halloween will remove every previous movie in the series from continuity except the 1978 original, meaning that the 2018 edition will be a direct follow-up to the events of John Carpenter’s iconic horror flick, tuning into the lives of Laurie Strode and her tormentor Michael Myers 40 years later.
However, director David Gordon Green and his writers have promised that, though they might not be canon anymore, the new movie will be filled with easter eggs and references to all those sequels of varying quality that fans nonetheless hold dear. In fact, in today’s new trailer, a neat callback to the events of 1981’s Halloween II can be found.
In the opening scene of the trailer, Michael Myers sneaks into the backdoor of a house to find himself his weapon of choice: a butcher’s knife. The unfortunate owner of the...

This Sunday marks one year since the passing of filmmaker Tobe Hooper. Last year we celebrated Hooper's legacy on a very special and solemn episode of our podcast, and one of the co-hosts on that episode was of course film journalist Patrick Bromley. Nobody on the planet has celebrated Hooper's work like Bromley has over the years, especially in the months after the director's unexpected passing, and Bromley's celebration of the influential director will continue in its biggest installment yet this Sunday in a live video tribute featuring some very special guests that will pay their respects to one of the horror genre's unsung heroes.
Beginning at 10:00am Cst on Sunday, August 26th on F This Movie! and running throughout the day, Patrick Bromley's live tribute to Tobe Hooper will feature special guests who worked with Hooper, including filmmaker and Post Mortem podcast host Mick Garris and actress Caroline Williams.

I can see some people already rolling their eyes when they hear about another ‘cabin in the woods’ style horror movie. Yes there has been a lot of them in the last 5, 10, even 20 years but plenty of good ones. I was hoping Dead Night would be one of these good ones.
It at least tries to do things differently. Not long after it begins, we are told what is going to happen in the movie via a TV documentary. Those kind of shows that explain ‘real-life’ crime and have ‘re-enactments’ when there’s no actual footage. But this show only shows one side of the story and the movie itself shows something that turns out completely different.

1981 was really peak business for slasher films; The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, Happy Birthday to Me, Halloween II, My Bloody Valentine and many more jockeyed for a piece of box office pie, with most turning a profit and then some. It only made sense for Euro-horror to want in on the action; after all, the giallo was a big influence on the aesthetic and body count of the slasher, so why shouldn’t they try something more attuned to mainstream audiences at the time? If you put it in the hands of Jess Franco however, you end up with Bloody Moon (1981), a delirious and grand stab fest that still ends up being closer to a giallo than intended. You can take the boy out of Spain, but you can’t take Spain out of the boy.
Well that’s not completely true as Bloody Moon was filmed in Spain,...

Connecting the dots between Halloween films is a complicated affair that’s about to get even messier. In a franchise already populated with reboots, retcons and abruptly abandoned plot threads, Blumhouse Productions’ upcoming sequel is set to disregard everything in the series timeline except for John Carpenter’s classic 1978 original, including the famous sibling twist of 1981’s Halloween II.
But in a interview published this week with The Hollywood Reporter, writer-director David Gordon Green suggested that the next Halloween was originally planned to slot in more neatly with the various sequels that came before.
“We started incorporating all the follow-ups and then it got overwhelming trying to engineer something that made sense. Some of the plot points became a little stretched thin as the franchise went on. And so ultimately finding those frustrations, McBride came to me and just said, ‘What’s the Michael Myers movie that you really want to see?...

Like the John Wick of scream queens, it seems that Jamie Lee Curtis keeps getting pulled back in for one final job as Laurie Strode. In a recent interview, the Halloween actress offered a thorough breakdown of the various times she’s returned to this iconic role, making it clear that she’s long harbored a feeling of loyalty to the character who was first introduced in the classic 1978 original.
The first time Curtis reprised the role was in 1981’s Halloween II, which she saw as an opportunity to complete Laurie’s story while also serving as a fitting conclusion to the horror-heavy first act of the film star’s career.
The truth of the matter is I did Halloween 1 and 2 because Halloween 2 picked up exactly where Halloween 1 left off…I felt I owed it to the people who loved the original movie…I had already done Prom Night, Terror Train,...

The first trailer for Blumhouse’s Halloween has finally dropped and it brings the promise of some old-fashioned suburban thrills in the vein of the classic original. Though there’s a lot to unpack in it, one section that may stand out to longtime fans of the slasher series is a couple of lines between Allyson and her friend.
When the question’s raised of whether Laurie Strode – grandmother of Allyson and survivor of the first film – is the brother of serial killer Michael Myers, Allyson’s quick to dismiss this notion as a myth. As it turns out, this nod to a plot twist in 1981’s Halloween II is just one of multiple references in the film to the previous sequels, despite the new flick disregarding all movies from the series’ timeline aside from the original.
Here’s what director David Gordon Green had to say about it.

“No, it was not her brother – that’s a thing people made up.”
That thing in question is the sibling subplot involving Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, which was explored intermittently throughout Halloween‘s many sequels.
But this October, there’s a real feeling that Blumhouse and David Gordon Green are going back to basics with their retro-inspired horror flick. Not only will it ignore all other Halloween movies in the timeline – save for John Carpenter’s seminal classic, of course – but it ditches that admittedly contrived subplot between Laurie and Michael, as it wasn’t until Halloween II that audiences learned of their family history.
And so, now that the first and suitably creepy teaser trailer is out in the wild (see here), co-writer Danny McBride has outlined the reasons why Laurie and Michael are no longer brother and sister during an in-depth interview with Cinema Blend:

Universal Pictures dropped the first eerie trailer for its “Halloween” reboot on Friday.
Most notably, the reboot features Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as Laurie Strode, who famously escaped the edge of Michael Myers’ blade in John Carpenter’s original 1978 slasher flick and landed Curtis a spot on the Hollywood A-list. Curtis isn’t alone, though, as Nick Castle also returns to stalk and loom over victims as Michael Myers once again. Curtis appeared in “Halloween II,” “Halloween H20: 20 years Later,” and “Halloween: Resurrection,” but the reboot will be Castle’s first time donning the infamous bedraggled mask since the original “Halloween.”
The trailer introduces Castle as a prisoner laughing hysterically at a Michael Myers mask, then switches to a grim Curtis at target practice and asserting, “I pray every night that he would escape.”
“Why the hell did you do that for?” asks the town sheriff, played by Will Patton.

The latest remake of the horror classic sees Curtis back as Laurie Strode in a film set four decades after the 1978 original
The trailer for Halloween, the latest in the longrunning series of slasher films that originated in 1978 with the John Carpenter-directed classic, has been released online. It features Jamie Lee Curtis in the key role of Laurie Strode; a part she last played in 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection.
This Halloween is the eleventh of the franchise, the start of a new reboot following Rob Zombie remakes Halloween and Halloween II from 2007 and 2009 respectively. It also ignores the other seven films made between 1981 and 2002 as it tells a story 40 years after the original’s events. The Pineapple Express’ David Gordon Green is on board as director.

Although Rob Zombie’s first crack at the Halloween franchise ended up proving divisive, I must confess that I enjoyed 2007’s remake of the John Carpenter classic. But when it came to 2009’s followup, Halloween II, well, I had a difficult time swallowing that one. In short, I’m right there with those of you who’d been put off by its defiance of series conventions.
For the most part, it was how Michael Myers had been written and portrayed that left a bad taste in my mouth, but I’m well aware of how some didn’t take too kindly to the direction in which Laurie Strode traveled, though I can understand the creative decisions due to the character enduring great trauma in the previous flick – goofy shared hallucinations notwithstanding.
Of course, Scout Taylor-Compton, who temporarily inherited the mantle of Laurie from Jamie Lee Curtis for both of Zombie’s efforts,...

In what almost felt like a practical joke, the script was conceived by writers Danny McBride and Green, and will see the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode. now, Curtis has taken to her Twitter account to give us our first good look at her return to the character that she brought to life for the first time nearly 40 years ago. Here’s the newly released image, which gives us our first good look at present-day Laurie in the upcoming ‘Halloween‘ film:
First shot! First day. Same slate. Same Laurie. David Gordon Green directing from his script.

Now that production on Blumhouse’s Halloween sequel is finally underway, we expect news regarding the next entry in the enduring horror franchise to trickle in on a regular basis.
