Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

Blake Lively Among Contenders to Be 'Green Lantern' Girlfriend

21 December 2009 7:40 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Words on the street, "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively could join Ryan Reynolds in the cast ensemble for "Green Lantern". According to Latino Review, the 22-year-old beauty who has just appeared in "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" is among five candidates who have a chance to take the role of Carol Ferris, the love interest of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.

However, Lively would not get that role easily as she has to compete with Eva Green, the James Bond's girl in 2006 "Casino Royale", and Jennifer Garner, the depicter of female international assassin in "Elektra". Then, "Mission: Impossible 3" star Keri Russell and Diane Kruger who played Helen in "Troy" are reportedly also named on the list of contenders to be the leading lady in the upcoming superhero flick.

On the script, Carol is described as the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. "She works for her father's company Ferris Air, »

The Verge: Zoe Kazan

21 December 2009 8:30 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Believe Zoe Kazan when she says she didn't mean to be so prolific. After first gaining notice last year in Revolutionary Road, the 26-year-old actress has appeared in film after film (after film!) this year, and this holiday season most of all. Kazan spent the early part of 2009 in I Hate Valentine's Day and the Tribeca entry The Exploding Girl, then sparked to Zac Efron in Me and Orson Welles and sparred with Robin Wright in Rebecca Miller's The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. She'll next be seen as the youngest daughter of exes Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in the Nancy Meyers comedy It's Complicated.

In the meantime, Kazan is busy writing and trying to line up her next theater role while scheduling a trip to Sundance in January to support another film she appears in. With all that on her plate, it's a miracle that she carved »

Best Supporting Actresses of 2009

11 December 2009 12:00 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

In yet another year when roles for women weren't all that juicy, these five fine actresses made quite an impression. What's interesting is that other than one well-known name, the actresses who delivered in supporting roles this year aren't the usual suspects. It's refreshing to see a fresh batch of women shine in supporting roles.

Honorable Mentions: Emma Stone in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Diane Kruger in Inglorious Basterds, Maria Bello in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, and Bailee Madison in Brothers.

And now for the top five performances by actresses in supporting roles:

Interview: Alan Arkin

9 December 2009 5:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

No matter how well we might prepare for an interview with an actor or filmmaker, no matter how thoughtful we think the questions are that we've assembled, there's always a possibility that all of that work will go out the window, simply because the interviewee does his or her job rather than thinks about it. Notwithstanding the possibility that there are some creative types who manage not to think much about anything, film critics and journalists (at least one of them) have a tendency to overthink the artistic process that their subjects intuitively embrace. As a result, the interview process becomes a push-pull of thoughts versus feelings, deconstruction versus submission, and all of that careful planning ends up being for nothing, if not doing more harm than good.

Alan Arkin has worked for over 50 years in Hollywood, with so many of the industry's greatest performers, and has played a range »

He will be producing with Dede Gardner via his and Gardner's Plan B Entertainment production shingle. For the project, he'll team up with the production company behind the success of another vampire movie, "Twilight" and its sequel "The Twilight Saga's New Moon", Summit Entertainment. Arkin Uncomfortable With Lively Naked Scene

6 December 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actor Alan Arkin's latest movie features his most difficult scene - with a naked Blake Lively.

The Gossip Girl star had to strip for a scene in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, in which she lies naked on top of the Little Miss Sunshine actor - and the 75 year old admits he was mortified throughout the shoot.

He explains, "I spent the whole day apologising to her. That was a tough day. You're thinking about being alone in a room with Blake Lively with no clothes on; I was there with 50 people and it was freezing and I had lines I had to say.

"In making 45 movies, it's only been an issue three times for me. It's not the kind of parts I get. It's always been uncomfortable for me and not something I really look forward to."

But the actress insists she preferred to get naked for Arkin over younger hunks: "I think being with a young dude would've been more awkward. I'd be thinking, 'Does he think I look cute?' I don't want that.

"I didn't have to worry about that with Alan because he was so uncomfortable and I was so uncomfortable, so I didn't have to worry about anyone being creepy. It was very easy." »

'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' review (2/5) - Director Miller smothers it with numerous stereotypes of little invention.

2 December 2009 5:42 AM, PST | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Like its troubled heroine, 'Pippa Lee' lacks a creative spark. The Private Lives of Pippa LeeWriter and filmmaker Rebecca Miller stands in the face of countless superhero blockbusters and male-oriented comedies and delivers a rare big-screen feature, a character-driven, female-focused, ensemble melodrama. Sadly, "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee", the fourth feature from Miller, is not nearly as good as one would hope from the director of standout dramas "Personal Velocity" (2002) and "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" (2005). A drama about a woman facing middle- aged malaise (played subtly by Robin Wright Penn), "Pippa Lee" shares many of the same setbacks as its heroine. The film lacks creative spark and powerful drama. Despite its impressive cast and storytelling potential, Miller fails to deliver with "Pippa Lee". Talented as she may be, Miller is proof that sometimes a filmmaker stumbles even with a story that appears to be a perfect fit. »

Hitting Theaters This Weekend

2 December 2009 3:00 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

New Moon and The Blind Side have had a choke-hold on the box office for the last two weeks, and although some big names hit the screen this weekend in new releases, I'm betting vampires and a blonde Sandra Bullock will once again earn 1st and 2nd place when Sunday rolls around. December kicks off with an action-packed heist, a widower traveling the country to connect with his kids, and the remake of a 2004 Danish film. Also hitting theaters in limited release is Jason Reitman's latest buzz-worthy offering:

Armored featuring Matt Dillon and Columbus Short

Brothers starring Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal

Everybody's Fine with Robert De Niro and Kate Beckinsale

Up in the Air (Limited) starring George Clooney and Anna Kendrick New and Expanded Photo Galleries

Robin Wright Penn Interview - The Private Lives of Pippa Lee

29 November 2009 7:11 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Robin Wright Penn stars in the title role in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, a moving tale of self-discovery. Rebecca Miller adapted her own novel and directed Pippa Lee, the story of a woman who marries a much older man (played by Alan Arkin), raises a family, and then embarks on a journey to confront her past and face the resentment she now feels over her seemingly perfect life and marriage.

Miller and Wright Penn worked together extensively to craft Pippa Lee, a 50 year old homemaker who examines her past and finds her own identity late in life, over the course of a year while the film was seeking funding. "I worked on the costumes, the sets and the script. And I was also able to talk to Robin for a whole year about it, much to the benefit of the movie. It was a wonderful collaboration," said Miller. »

Speaking to USA Today, Wright Penn said: "Any kind of vulnerability is always hard to do. Just being exposed in that way is difficult. People say it's hard to do those scenes revealing the blood and soul of your heart, crying. "That's easy-peasy for me. Intimacy is far more challenging. (more) »

The ‘Forrest Gump’ actress – who recently ended her marriage to Sean Penn – found it hard to shoot parts of her new movie, ‘The Private Lives of Pippa Lee’, especially when her character had to make love to Keanu’s in the back of a truck. She said: "Any kind of vulnerability is always hard to do. Just being exposed in that way is difficult. People say it's hard to do those scenes revealing the blood and soul of your heart, crying. That's easy-peasy for me. Intimacy is far more challenging. Thank God we did it in one take." Robin also revealed she wants fans to start remembering her for her new movies rather than 1994's ‘Forrest Gump’ and 1987's ‘The Princess Bride’. She told USA Today newspaper: "I love those movies, and they're going to go down in history. They're iconic. And I love that I'm a part of film history. »

Happy Thanksgiving to our friends in the U.S.! There are three major movies in wide release for this long weekend, including The Wachowski Brothers' Ninja Assassin, Wes Anderson's stop motion flick Fantastic Mr. Fox, and the Disney comedy Old Dogs starring John Travolta and Robin Williams. It's unclear if any of them will actually be able to dethrone New Moon at the box office, at least there is a good variety of options for a night out at any rate. As we mentioned yesterday [1], The Road is getting a significantly smaller release than expected, at least initially, and other films in limited release include Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles and Disney's The Princess and the Frog. What will you be watching this weekend? Old Dogs [2] Ninja Assassin [3] Fantastic Mr. Fox [4] (wide) The Road [5] (limited) Me and Orson Welles [6] (limited) The Princess and the Frog [7] (limited »
