Maura Tierney on come back from cancer treatment

1 hour ago | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Maura Tierney, 44, is making a good recovery from treatment for breast cancer. The ER actress was forced to resign from her stint on NBC's Parenthood to undergo treatment and will return to her role in Rescue Me, said producer Peter Tolan. Tierney was replaced on Parenthood by Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls fame. Tolan said: 'We are just about finished writing the entire sixth season, which is about 10 episodes, and then there are nine more [for Season 7] so we know we're going to bring back Maura Tierney, because we loved her and she loved us, which is even more fulfilling. She can take care of herself and come back.' Tierney will begin shooting …

Go south and east, Hollywood

8 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

South and east Asian actors may be enjoying higher profiles in the Us on the small screen, but in mainstream films they haven't moved far away from comedy sidekicks and stereotypes

No sooner had the BBC told us that south Asian actors had never had it so good in the Us – more recognition, higher-profile roles – than Variety came along to crush that bright-eyed optimism into bitter, scowl-making resentment.

In one survey of the state-of-Asian-actors-in-Hollywood, there's excitement and hope: the last decade has seen a steady emergence of faces, if not memorable than at least vaguely familiar, with significant telly parts in ER, Lost and Heroes. Brown faces are making it big(gish). Hooray! In the other, there's weary hand-wringing at the persistent lack of awards acknowledgement for south – and indeed east Asian – actors in film, despite cross-cultural epics such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Babel otherwise being nominated for gongs across the board. …

'We3' Producer Extends Option On 'The Forgotten' Adaptation

22 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Back in April, Jareth Grealish and Evan Young’s “The Forgotten” was picked up by Don Murphy and John Wells as a potential feature film. And while details have since been scarce, Murphy and Wells have extended their option.

"A well established screenwriter is now attached to the project,” Grealish told Mania.com. “While we're not at liberty to disclose his name, I can assure you the guy has some very impressive credentials, The take that he and our producers have on 'The Forgotten' is top-notch. Evan and I are very excited about where they are taking it."

“The Forgotten” was originally published by Fintan Studios as a four-issue miniseries back in 2002 that was co-written by Grealish and Young with artist John Forcucci. The story follows a mysterious man with the ability to make those around him forget that he ever existed as he attempts to unravel a murder mystery …

Alaina Reed Hall of Sesame Street and 227 dies at 63

21 December 2009 5:40 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Another celebrity death has hit the world of the small screen.

Actress Alaina Reed Hall, probably best remembered for playing Rose on the sitcom 227 and Olivia on Sesame Street from the late 70s to the late 80s, passed away last week after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 63

Of course, her career stretches far beyond those two shows with parts on just about every major show in the last few decades including Friends, ER and Ally McBeal, but she was always Olivia to me. She was on the show and even the big screen spinoff Follow That Bird during my formative years, so her sweet and endearing demeanor performance as Olivia pretty much stuck her with the role.

I'm sure if I met her in person, I would accidentally call her Olivia at least four times and something tells me she would not have minded a bit.

DVD Playhouse—December 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, …

Thor’s Mom Will Be Rene Russo

17 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Variety is reporting Rene Russo has joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel comic film, “Thor.” Russo will be playing Frigga, the mother of Thor, based loosely on Frigg of Norse mythology.

Production on the film begins in January of 2010 with Kenneth Branagh directing and Chris Hemsworth playing the hammer-weilding Thor. Paramount has set the release date for May 20, 2011.

As the wife of Norse god Odin, to be played by Anthony Hopkins in the film, Frigga is the queen of Asgard. She’s also the step mother of Thor and foster mother to Loki, the pic’s primary villain, played by Tom Hiddleston.

Natalie Portman will be playing Thor’s love interest.

I think Russo is a good actress and the cast is definitely taking shape, I’m just hoping they will all blend well together to make an awesome movie.

'True Blood' casts Joe Manganiello as Alcide

16 December 2009 10:21 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Twilight's" Taylor Lautner is about to get some competition in the studly-werewolf arena.

HBO's "True Blood" has cast Joe Manganiello as Alcide Herveaux, a werewolf who has a good-sized role in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire novels and will do the same in the series. Manganiello will have a recurring part on the show, according to multiple reports.

Manganiello is the latest in a flurry of new actors joining the show, which began filming its third season this month. J. Smith-Cameron, Alfre Woodard, Denis O'Hare, Marshall Allman, Grant Bowler and Theo Alexander have all signed on in the past couple weeks, and Kristin Bauer has been bumped up to a series regular.

In Harris' books, Alcide is a full-blooded werewolf who's vying for the leadership of his pack. He first comes into contact with Sookie (Anna Paquin) when Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) asks him to help Sookie search for the kidnapped …

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the …

Close to 100 Films in Contention for the 2010 Cinema Eye Honors

I'm glad that the organization, (now in year three I believe?) has a set in stone manner in which to evaluate the best of the best in doc films, something in which the Oscars have proved to be inadequate in acknowledging. - Having never asked any filmmaker the question of how the Cinema Eye Honors are perceived within the documentary filmmaker community, I'd be willing to bet that its quickly become a welcomed, annual celebration of the form. John Stamos helps break up $680,000 photo blackmail plot

ER hunk John Stamos has helped the FBI to break up an alleged $680,000 blackmail plot. Stamos teamed up with investigators to foil the email blot in which he was threatened with 'damaging photos' of him at a Florida house party. Shortly after learning of the plot, Stamos got his lawyer to contact the FBI, according to Us reports. An undercover agent then posed as Stamos' attorney and set up a meeting at a Michigan airport last Wednesday. The sting operation ended up with the arrest of Allison Coss, 23, and Scott Sippola, 30. Stamos' Rep: 'Extortionists Had Photos With Fans'

8 December 2009 5:31 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Two people arrested for attempting to blackmail actor John Stamos only possessed photos of the star "posing with fans", according to his spokesman.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested two Michigan residents on 2 December after they allegedly threatened to release the snaps of the ER star unless he handed over $680,000 (£425,000).

Stamos went to authorities and helped them snare alleged extortionists Allison Coss, 23, and Scott Sippola, 30, in a sting, according to an affidavit obtained by The Smoking Gun.

According to the document, the actor attended a Florida party in 2004 with Coss and her pal when the pictures in question were taken. He received an email in November from an unknown source threatening to "harm (Stamos') reputation" by releasing the shots to the media, at which point the star's lawyer contacted the FBI.

But Stamos' rep has stepped in to clarify the nature of the images: "The photos in question are photos of John posing with fans. At the conclusion of the investigation and hearing, the photos will be available and the public will be able to see that the photos are simply John posing with fans."

Coss and Sippola were released on bond on 3 December. The case is still pending. …

Men of a Certain Age Pwns Cable

Newsflash: Middle aged men are in.  Now I feel safe admitting I'm over 40.  Ray Romano's Men of a Certain Age, a series I personally dismissed as demographically narrow but brilliant, seized the top spot in ad-supported cable premieres this year with a whopping 5.4 million viewers.  Now, the segmentation shows what one would reasonably expect: almost half of those viewers fit in the 25-54 age range.  Yup, and you can bet that two other statistics aren't going to be discussed, despite the huge overall number:  the concentration of males, and the concentration in the upper end of that spread.  But really, who cares – middle aged men need TV shows too.

Men of a Certain Age stars Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula as a tight knit trio of friends dealing with advancing age and all the typically amusing ways we males tend to resist it.  The humor is un-apologetically targeted …
