Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Alex Divincenzo revisits the great slasher slump of 1989.
While horror fans often look back on the ’80s with a nostalgic glow, 1989 was not what most would consider a strong year for the genre — particularly when compared to the embarrassment of riches spawned by the rest of the decade. Not even Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Freddy Krueger were safe from the slasher slump.
Each franchise had its ups and downs across a cumulative 17 movies in the ’80s, but the decade came to a close with low points — creatively and financially — in all three sagas: Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Just in time for Thanksgiving (in case you’ve been avoiding leaks), NetherRealm has released a brand-new Seasonal Fatalities pack for Mortal Kombat 1 that includes the previously-released Halloween Fatality, along with the new Thanksgiving and upcoming Christmas Fatalities. You can buy it now from the in-game store, and if you previously purchased the standalone Halloween Fatality, you’ll get the other finishers for free as they release.
The bundle costs 1,200 Dragon Krystals, which is Mortal Kombat 1‘s premium currency. Dragon Krystals can only be purchased with real-world money, with the best-value option in this case being the $9.99 1,250 Dragon Krystals bundle. This comes after there was initial backlash from fans over the Halloween Fatality itself costing $9.99 by itself, to which Warner Bros. responded by announcing the two additional “free” fatalities.
For those that missed it, the Halloween Fatality sees you slam a jack-o’-lantern filled with bugs onto your opponent’s head.

Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

Although Wes Craven's 1984 film "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is typically lumped in with slasher movies -- it came out right when the genre was cresting in popularity -- it doesn't quite follow the same structure as its contemporaries in the horror genre. The "Nightmare" movies, because they take place largely within dreams, are slightly more cerebral, bizarre, or imaginative than many of the stalk-n-stab movies that infested theaters at the time. The series also attracted interesting and notable directors who went on to other projects. Chuck Russell directed part 3. Renny Harlin director part 4. Stephen Hopkins directed part 5. And Rachel Talalay directed "The Final Nightmare."
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" marathons are common around Halloween, and steamrolling through all nine extant "Nightmare" films is an experience the series' fans have likely forced themselves through at least once. Having done it,...

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Numbers have begun rolling in for this mid-summer weekend and as expected Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is looking to drop the 60% we predicted on Thursday. If that number holds it would be about a 5% steeper decline than 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which may not sound like much until you consider that Skull opened with over $100 million (or $126.9 million when you account for its 4-day Memorial Day gross.) So when Crystal Skull dropped to number 2 in its second week to the ladies of Sex and the City, it was still able to manage over $44 million, Dial of Destiny will be lucky to see $28 million in its second week.
If there is a glimmer of hope for Indy to maintain its pole position it is that horror films tend to be very front loaded and because of that, Insidious: The Red Door may win the Friday box...

Actress/writer/stand-up comedian Jenny Slate, whose credits include Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Marvel Comics adaptation Venom, and Saturday Night Live, has signed on to star in the horror film Mindful, which Deadline describes as being about “a possessed meditation app that begins to kill its followers.”
Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) will be directing the film from a screenplay by Leslie Bohem, who got his start writing House III: The Horror Show and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. In the decades since, Bohem has worked on the likes of Nowhere to Run, Daylight, Dante’s Peak, The Darkest Hour, The Alamo, and the mini-series Taken. The story he has crafted for Mindful has the following synopsis: When her husband shockingly dies while meditating on the Mindful app, Angela (Slate), deeply suspicious of the new wellness craze, uncovers supernatural forces that have fused with the technology.

Last week, we posted a list of five forgotten actors we’d like to see make a comeback, and the reaction was so strong, we decided to post a bunch more! There’s a ton of forgotten actors from the 80s and 90s we’d love to have back on our screen, so let’s take a look at another group of them today.
Kelly Jo Minter
Let’s start with a horror favorite and a regular presence on the convention circuit, Kelly Jo Minter. Most folks will remember her from A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, The People Under the Stairs, and a slew of television series appearances. She was everywhere for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, then projects started becoming further and further apart, with nothing between 2008 and 2019, then nothing since. This actress is beloved by many people, and she should get a new part,...

Fans of the Halloween franchise received some sad news today, as it has been confirmed that stuntman George P. Wilbur’s fellow Michael Myers performer Chris Durand, who played the character in 1998’s Halloween H20, broke the news of his passing on Facebook earlier today: “George P. [We're celebrating some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies of 1989 this month in Daily Dead's Class of 89 retrospective series! Check back on Daily Dead throughout the rest of August for more special features celebrating the 30th anniversaries of a wide range of horror and sci-fi films!]
By 1989, Freddy Krueger and actor Robert Englund had become fully woven into the fabric of pop culture, as the Nightmare on Elm Street film series was thriving, Freddy’s Nightmares had completed its first season on TV airwaves, and Englund had even crossed over to the realm of music after rapping on the Fat Boys song “Are You Ready for Freddy?” the previous year. And while all of that is exceedingly impressive, I feel like it was in 1989 when Englund truly came into his own, appearing in both A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child and Dwight H. Little’s adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, with Robert taking the directorial reins on 976-Evil and also appearing throughout the second season of Freddy’s Nightmares as well.
Make no mistake—in 1989, Robert Englund was Everywhere, and it totally ruled.

It always comes back to this. As far as I can remember watching horror, there was always this kind of film showing on TV: ordinary folk, exposure to something awful (usually nuclear in nature), and then ensuing chaos. Of course I’m talking about the ‘50s and the Atomic Age of Horror, and starting with the title, 1977’s The Incredible Melting Man is intent on paying homage to them. Intent is a helluva word; full of optimism and purpose, it suggests a clear vision to be followed through. However, if it had been, we wouldn’t be left with this hilarious and heartfelt curiosity.
Released by American International stateside in December, Timm didn’t do great business nor were critics lining up to ladle praise upon it. Every review however did laud Rick Baker’s gooey makeup, and it has been considered the lone shining star in a vacant sky...

Nearly thirty years have gone by since everyone’s favorite killer doll, Chucky, was introduced to the world in November of 1988 through Child’s Play, and it didn’t take long for the character to ascend into pop culture, standing shoulder to shoulder with slasher icons of the era including Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. To say that he arrived at just the right time to be relevant would be an understatement, as the franchises of many of his famous contemporaries had either begun to dwindle in popularity or were on the verge of their downturn as widespread interest in the subgenre was waning.
Michael Myers was dragged back out for the first time in seven years to revitalize the Halloween franchise with Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers mere weeks before the release of Child’s Play only for that series to go back into hibernation...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child may not be the franchise’s best outing – I’d argue it’s the worst of the original series – but that isn’t stopping Neca from giving it a little action figure love. As previewed at Toy Fair earlier this year, the fifth installment’s “Chef Freddy” is getting his own retro-style […]...

Have you ever felt like you're falling forever in your dreams? Special effects master Steve Wang (who worked on A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child) looks to replicate that unsettling feeling with his new (aptly titled "Infinity Hell" 1:3 scale Freddy Krueger maquette from Elite Creature Collectibles.
Standing 30 inches tall (so it can tower over your sleeping head on your nightstand), the "Infinity Hell" Freddy Krueger maquette features impeccable details, both in its depiction of Robert Englund's iconic character and the seemingly bottomless base that looks like a doorway to your deepest, darkest nightmares.
The "Infinity Hell" Freddy Krueger maquette is limited to only 499 worldwide, so if you want to add this work of art to your collection, read on for official details and visit Cinemaquette's official website.

The sequel to one of the most influential horror movies of all time, Halloween II continues the story of the night He came home. Directing from a screenplay by John Carpenter and Debra Hill, Rick Rosenthal skillfully replicated the deliberate yet intoxicating pacing and overall mood of the original film while adding a potent surplus of gore. Unfairly overshadowed by the film’s legacy, Carpenter’s score finely whittles away the nerves with its tense synthesized savageness. As one of Death Waltz Recording’s early releases, the label made sure it got off on the right note by commissioning Jump Cut artist Brandon Schaefer for the cover art. Dark, hollow, and heartless, Schaefer’s adaptation of The Shape is a fresh and hypnotizing take on a horror icon.

It's that wonderfully eerie time of year and Mondo is getting into the Halloween spirit! They recently revealed a few collectibles for A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is one of the greatest horror franchises of all time. These films are a blast to watch and I always enjoy watching one or two of them during this time of year.
They have released a vinyl box set featuring all of the soundtracks from all of the films in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. That box set comes with seven pieces of art for the films that were created by artist Mike Saputo. There are also two prints created by the same artist that have gone up for sale for A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare Elm Street 2.
You can find all of the information below that was released for the vinyl set and the two prints.

Many great horror icons are accompanied by scores that are just as haunting (and perhaps just as recognizable) as the characters they accompany, and that's especially true with the eerie, dreamlike sounds of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Containing the scores for the first seven films in the franchise that Freddy built, Mondo and Death Waltz's newly revealed Box of Souls 8-vinyl set includes chilling tracks remastered by James Plotkin, killer new artwork by Mike Saputo, and a 12-page booklet with reflections on the franchise from composers and cast members. You may never sleep again after listening to it...

Clowns were always creepy, but then Stephen King came along. In 1986, King published “It,” which introduced the world to seven scrappy kids nicknamed The Losers Club, who faced off against a child-killing, shape-shifting clown named Pennywise, an evil entity that was infesting their hometown of Derry, Maine. Derry had popped up in several King novels before “It,” including “Pet Cemetery” and the novella “The Body,” which served as the source material for the film “Stand By Me,” but it wasn’t until “It” that King fans really got to know the dark history and evil lurking in the sewers of the fictional Maine town.
With King’s mammoth novel sitting around 1,138 pages, the bloody details of Derry’s darkest days are fleshed out across multiple time periods. But, as with so many film adaptations of classic novels, not everything in the book makes the final cut. Even 1990’s “It” TV mini-series,...

Like with any long-running slasher movie franchise, every horror fan has a favorite Nightmare on Elm Street sequel when asked. The most popular response is Dream Warriors, which, based on anecdotal evidence, many fans prefer even to the first film. Some like its follow-up, the Renny Harlin-directed The Dream Master, best. Very rarely, if ever, do Nightmare fans name the fifth installment, 1989’s The Dream Child, as their favorite. It’s the unloved orphan of the franchise, lacking even the novelty of Freddy’s Dead with its 3-D climax and the fact that it’s designed to end the series for good (even if Wes Craven’s New Nightmare would render said closure impotent just a few years later). For many, The Dream Child represents the franchise overstaying its welcome for one film too many before wrapping up. And, yes, the movie has its share of problems both in...

Today marks the 25th anniversary of Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, arguably the worst entry in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Coming off of the financial disappointment that was A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, New Line Cinema decided that it was time to retire Freddy for good. While the film has its detractors (mostly […]...

Watch Freddy Krueger kill his way through several different companies in our weird history of Nightmare on Elm Street comics.
As a concept, the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise is something I both love and hate at the same time. On one hand, it’s a killer idea with a charismatic villain, awesome set pieces, dark humor, and over-the-top violence. On the other hand, it’s a completely broken idea. The fact that it’s a franchise makes it completely hollow. As great a villain as Freddy can be – and it says a lot that a child murderer was somehow celebrated as an '80s icon – he inherently breaks the story.
Freddy Krueger has what I’d call, for the lack of a better term, “bullshit invulnerability.” See, every Nightmare on Elm Street movie is based on the idea of him being this unstoppable boogeyman that our cast has to survive.

Writer M-e Girard pens a personal account of her relationship with A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. In or around 1994, there was this: a twelve-year-old French-Canadian kid, a 13-inch TV-vcr combo set, and a copy of A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. It was likely a Saturday afternoon,…

New artwork has been commissioned for the set (by artist Shawn Conn, http://atomicdeadguy.com/), and configuring the sleeves together forms a larger piece of art. Before you have any nightmares, please don’t worry … the original Matthew Joseph Peak creations are included in the packaging.
The set comes complete with the trademark knitted Freddy sweater encasing the outer box.

Remembering Wes Craven Wes Craven was indirectly responsible for my introduction to horror. I was nine years old, and afraid of the idea of horror movies – but I had never actually seen one. As Above/So Below
The first Dowdle brothers collaboration to hit theaters since the 2008 [Rec] remake Quarantine, As Above/So Below is well worth the wait. Following a group of explorers in search of the Philosopher’s Stone, As Above/So Below was largely shot on location in the Catacombs beneath Paris, and the film’s found footage shooting style convincingly places viewers inside the skull-lined tunnels where shadows threaten to consume you at every turn.
Claustrophobic jump scares, the psychological horror of having your past literally come back to haunt (and potentially kill) you, and the creepily crafted screenplay from John Erick and Drew Dowdle had me anxiously tugging at my shirt collar throughout most of the film’s 93-minute runtime. The scariest part for me? The mysterious wide-eyed woman that Edwin Hodge’s camera-holding character Benji keeps seeing. Her lingering looks into the lens still give me chills.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
Written by Leslie Bohem
Directed by Stephen Hopkins
1989 USA
The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has nine films spread across three timelines (granted, two of those timelines only feature one film each). The original timeline started with the first film and ends for now with Freddy vs Jason (skipping New Nightmare in the process). However, if one wanted to watch the canon of that timeline, with all the mythology and intrigue intact, one would only have to watch the original and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, sequels.
The first film set up the rules of the universe. Freddy can control your dreams and what happens in those dreams have real world consequences. If he kills you while you sleep, you die. It also established that items from the dream world can be brought into the real world and that Freddy can...

Robert Englund calls it “a junior high school shop project from hell.” The man who played iconic horror villain Freddy Krueger in eight feature films isn’t talking about a poorly constructed student project like the block of wood I received an F+ for in 8th grade. Enlgund instead describes a weapon composed of razor-sharp steel and leather: Freddy Krueger’s bladed glove from A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and its seven sequels.
Crudely made in a boiler room that was Freddy’s own private hell on earth for children, the bladed glove is an iconic piece of horror cinema, and it’s just one of many topics from the Elm Street movies featured in directors Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch’s meticulous 2010 documentary film, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, which was released recently as a two-disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.

Ah, Valentine’s Day- that special time of year when, if you’re in a relationship, everything seems just wonderful. If you’re not, you pretty much wish everyone around you would stop being so damn lovey-dovey and just grow up already.
The horror genre has seen its share of passionate lovers and soul mates over the years willing to fight it out to the end, whether they’re being chased by creatures, psychotic serial killers, Mother Nature or even as they struggling against internal forces that threaten those they love most in the world.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day this Friday, I decided to pay homage to some of my very favorite couples in the horror that demonstrate to the very fullest the idea, “til death do us part.” Check out the first part of my 14 Favorite Horror Couples countdown below and look for part two later this week right here on Daily Dead!

Bon appétit! It is the chef, or the cook if you will, that makes all the magic happen with the food we eat. The right chef can take your ordinary meal and make it extraordinary… or is that Hamburger Helper? Anyway, here are the Top 9 Sinister Chefs in horror.
With the release of Serving Up Richard (review), we decided to dig down deep and remember some of our favorite chefs and cooks throughout the history of horror.
Whether they be chefs of the gourmet variety, or they just threw something (like a boiling bunny) on the stove, the following list of ne'er-do-wells all know their way around a kitchen. And that's one of the reasons why we love them.
As always, we'll give you a few honorable mentions to get things going. Glenn Close's previously referenced character, Alex Forrest, was perhaps not a true chef, but she sure knew...

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy is a four-hour documentary film that chronicles the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, as well as chronicling the rise of New Line Cinema.
Co-directed by Daniel Farrands and Andrew Kasch, it presents the kinds of in-depth yet light-hearted gems fans care about, not the paint-by-numbers stuff your average studio-produced Blu-ray extra disc typically regurgitates. It was made by genre fans who approach it from a place of love, but more importantly by filmmakers who understand that nothing is precious and nothing is off-limits. Heather Langenkamp, who played the ultimate final girl Nancy Thompson in three of the Nightmare films, serves as executive producer and narrator.
In exploring the Elm Street saga, the film presents photographs, storyboards, conceptual art, publicity materials, archival documents, and behind-the-scenes footage that have never been previously shared. it expands on Wes Craven's motivations in creating the first...

In 1984 Wes Craven gave us A Nightmare on Elm Street and a horror classic was born. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) would haunt children in their dreams for many sequels to come turning indie studio New Line Cinema into the “house that Freddy built”.
As a kid, there was nothing more exciting than going to the movie store on weekends. The “Videorama” in our town was my family’s place – 5 movies for $5, yes sir! Leave it to my parents to ignore rating systems and good judgement, because their kids were horror fans. A Nightmare on Elm Street was my favorite, I would rent the series continuously knowing that I would have to wait for Sunday morning to come around so there was sunlight to protect me.
I would have nightmares and that somehow didn’t deter me from horror movies. I checked out Friday the 13th and Halloween, and sure Jason and Myers had their qualities,...
