Ever since I first saw those amazing opening scenes from 28 Days Later, I've been waiting for someone to step-up and adapt John Wyndham's brilliant apocalyptic novel The Day of the Triffids, and do it right. We had a disastrous film version in 1962, that I watched once and vowed never to revisit. There is also a far more faithful UK television adaptation from 1981 that I would recommend to anyone who might be curious, although it was somewhat limited by a low budget and quite stilted direction, although the bleakness and horror were certainly there. So now it's 2009, and we have a fairly big budget BBC adaptation with some serious star power: Dougary Scott (Mi:2), Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Eddie Izzard (Valkary), Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) and one of my favourite actors Mr. Brian Cox (Manhunter). Remembering Dan O'Bannon: A Look Back at Return Of The Living Dead

Warning: If you haven’t seen it (and if that’s the case, get thee to the DVD immediately), the following contains major spoilers for Return Of The Living Dead.
I’ve noticed that Dan O’Bannon’s recent passing has inspired a lot of scolding obituaries, with paragraphs devoted to lecturing a reader ignorant of O’Bannon’s contributions to film. I’ve already been told this week in open letters by complete strangers how I don’t even know that he wrote the original draft of Alien and therefore created the chest-burster and he worked with John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper and on Star Wars and if wasn’t for him there would be no... was Dan O’Bannon doomed to an obscurity I was unaware of? While he is less famous than some of his collaborators, possibly unfairly, he will never need to be explained to me

Rather than tell you what I think I should, I decided to come clean on this list. For instance, I am aware that A Serious Man might technically and artistically be a cut above some of these, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. I’ll also preface this by saying since I was covering most of the main-stream movies this year, there were a lot of independent movies I didn’t see, so they may not appear on the list. The film title links to a review when applicable.
Up In The Air – Buoyed by a trio of fantastic actors, I found this movie to be utterly charming. Directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You For Smoking, Juno), the movie is touching, prescient, original, and funny. Vera Farmiga, George Clooney and Anna Kendrick all received Golden Globe acting nominations. George Clooney’s depiction of a traveling man who

James Cameron ‘Terminates’ fan request for Autograph

After a gruelling Avatar press tour that covered three out of the four corners of the earth, James Cameron has been caught on camera being welcomed back to the capital of the movie world by more than the usual fanfare of screams, shouts outs and photo requests. This time the visual record shows the side of a fan and director that definitely did not fulfill the festive cheer. Set your bo-peepers on this…
This whole thing reminds me of the time I met Bruce Campbell of ‘Evil Dead’ fame and asked for his autograph. The difference being was that I was forking out hard earned money for his signature at a film convention, hence I was justified in my request as I was paying for the pleasure of a genuine scrawl. What wasn’t justified was that I wanted my full size replica ‘Army of Darkness’ custom made chainsaw, shipped

Fede Alvarez uploaded a $300 and probably 3 good months (guessing) 4 minute short about giant robots and space ships that attack and destroy a city. What did that clip earn him? The BBC has more:
A producer from Uruguay who uploaded a short film to YouTube in November 2009 has been offered a $30m (£18.6m) contract to make a Hollywood film.
The movie will be sponsored by director Sam Raimi, whose credits include the Spiderman and Evil Dead films.
Fede Alvarez's short film "Ataque de Panico!" (Panic Attack!) featured giant robots invading and destroying Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.
It is 4 mins 48 seconds long and was made on a budget of $300 (£186).
So far it has had more than 1.5 million views on YouTube.
"I uploaded (Panic Attack!) on a Thursday and on Monday my inbox was totally full of e-mails from Hollywood studios," he told the BBC's Latin American service BBC Mundo.

Ho Ho Ho! It’s that time of the year for giving and receiving and if your having trouble finding the perfect gift for your loved one then i will hopefully mention something that will help fill that stocking in time for 25th December.
I’m going to run down my top Blu-Ray films, Top DVD’s, Top TV Boxsets and Top anything else that I think are must haves this year.
We’ve added links to Zavvi.com who are currently offering free delivering on everything so make sure you check them out.
Blu-ray and DVD Films
I’ll start with Blu-Ray/DVD films. Blu-Rays have reduced in price incredibly in the run up to Christmas and if you shop around then you will find all sort of deals like 2-4-1’s or 2 for a nice low price, and it’s still not to late to get them in time for Christmas.

A film critic on why we should be relaxed about adult themes in videogames
What I know about videogames wouldn't fill the back of a postage stamp. I don't play them and probably never will – there are just too many movies to keep up with. But I do know something about horror films, and the moral panic they provoke. And if there's anything which I recognise about the modern video games market, it is the ominous sense of ill-informed outrage which takes me back to the heydays of the "video nasties" scare.
Back in the 80s, unregulated horror movies were seen as such a threat that people were sent to prison for copying or distributing them. According to the tabloid press, the country was awash with filth that would twist our children's minds and turn them into killers and cannibals. When hauled before the courts, titles as harmless as The Evil Dead

Carriers is no exception to the horror rule

Horror movie characters have to break the rules – where's the fun in people sticking together, not having sex and not getting killed off?
Carriers is the sort of B-movie that would have attracted scant critical attention back in the 1970s – maybe a qualified thumbs-up from horror fans, who might have appreciated its low-budget evocation of disease-ridden America and implicit criticism of selfish survivalism. But since it's coming out in 2009 it will almost certainly be written off as Zombieland with neither zombies nor jokes.
Both films are road movies that exploit contemporary paranoia about viruses, but the most intriguing point in common is that both sets of characters have drawn up rules to help them survive. In Zombieland these are flippant ("Beware of bathrooms"), while the gospel according to Carriers is summed up by the uncompromising statement that "the sick are already dead."
Of course, characters in horror movies always do break the rules,

We're starting to see more of these end of the year awards and nominations pop up, and a few names are starting to rise to the top. Up in the Air, Precious, and The Hurt Locker all had good weeks, probably the first of several between now and early March. That another thing: Can we cut down awards season? It's longer than the baseball playoffs now. Four months of this? Stop it.
There was other big news this week not related to gold fever. For instance, Paul Thomas Anderson and Philip Seymour Hoffman are working again, and director Paul Greengrass isn't. Well, as long as it's the next Jason Bourne movie, he isn't.

Best of the Decade #20: Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Like it or not, comic book movies have sort of defined popular cinema throughout this decade. Marvel (and DC to some degree) have been pumping out multiple superhero films a year, taking advantage of the initial success of X-Men and Spider-Man, and completely dominating the summer box office. While the formula may have gotten stale and uninspired for the most part, there is the occasional comic book film that has managed to elevate the source material beyond a simple franchise cash cow, looking to secure a long line of sequels, prequels and reboots. One of those films, in my opinion, is Spider-Man 2. (Yes. A Sequel.)
I'm not entirely sure what it is about this film that worked so well for me. Maybe its rewatchability has bumped it up a bit as merely the "super hero film I've watched the most", but I truly do feel that Sam Raimi's

Toward the end of October, word got out that Grindhouse Releasing was going to be making lots of classic horror fans very happy by bringing Sam Raimi's brilliant debut, The Evil Dead back to theaters as a midnight movie on select dates at specific theaters around the country. Well get out your Ash costumes and fuel up your chainsaws because FEARnet has just announced the first set of dates and locations, listed below:

January 29-30: Sunshine Cinema, New York
February 5-6: Egyptian Theatre, Seattle

The Evil Dead Re-Release Dates Announced, Plus New Poster

Rejoice, ye fans of Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi!
A month ago, Grindhouse Pictures announced that it would re-release the 1981 cult horror-comedy The Evil Dead back into theaters in 2010. Now, Fearnet writes that Grindhouse has given us official release dates, plus a poster.
The announced dates are as follows:
– January 8-9: Uptown Theatre, Minneapolis
– January 15-16: Esquire Theatre, Denver
– January 29-30: Sunshine Cinema, New York
– February 5-6: Egyptian Theatre, Seattle
– February 19-20: River Oaks Theatre, Houston
– February 26-27: Inwood, Dallas
– March 5: Nuart Theatre, Los Angeles
The Evil Dead is still fun to watch today for its ingenuity and ability to juggle both straight horror elements and hilarious satire. But the gruesome dismemberments and multi-colored bodily fluids (not to mention a very disturbing, not-so-subtly-suggestive use of tree limbs) were enough to earn the movie an X rating (changed to an Nc-17 when the X

My last two columns in this series profiled the environmental docu-drama The Green Chain and Velcrow Ripper's personalised exploration of activism and spirituality, Fierce Light. Both of these films dealt with serious topics so this time around I thought I should lighten up. Don't get the idea that I'm going to be talking about the indie equivalent of Anne of Green Gables or Disney's Fantasia, though. Neither of the films profiled here are family-friendly and one is definitely not for viewers with weak stomachs.
Dead Snow
Getting attacked by regular zombies has got to be bad enough, but getting attacked by evil Nazi zombies when you are in a secluded hut in the Norwegian mountains has really gotta suck! That mountain shack scenario is the premise of Dead Snow (Død Snø), a Norwegian made zombie movie that was an Official Selection at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
According to director Tommy Wirkola,

Remember about a month ago when we told you The Evil Dead would soon be returning to theaters? It'll be a limited run arriving first in Minneapolis on January 8th, with Grindhouse Releasing getting the nod of approval from Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert, and Bruce Campbell for the relaunch.
Bloody Disgusting had the most up-to-date list of dates, which as of now runs through May, symbolic of the way independent horror movies and other cult films had to be released nationwide, weekend-by-weekend without a major nationwide campaign. And the best way to see an old horror classic is definitely on the big screen, before home video or cable was much of an option.
Talking about the re-release, Campbell said in a statement, “Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead - especially on the big screen. I
