For most people, just coming up with a cast of characters as wonderfully lovable as the Muppets - to say nothing of helping spearhead a pair of television classics as durable as The Muppet Show and Sesame Street - would be enough to justify an early and lucrative retirement. For Jim Henson, however, those feats only scratched the surface of his ambition, and by the early ’80s, the man who helped turn puppets from a sideshow trick into an art form was ready to try his hand at slightly more grown-up fare. Labyrinth may be the most heinous crime committed against the human mind at the hand of muppeteers. It’s not awful, it’s not even bad – it’s just a total mind screw from the first Bowie appearance on out. Who’s the movie really for? I still say it should be shown to children. The images in Labyrinth were and remain some of the most bizarre things a muppet has ever done. Bird-things dancing on their heads, a fox riding saddleback on a dog or a tunnel full of faces made out of hands – suspend your disbelief indefinitely, otherwise there’s no hope for you enjoying this one.

Here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. Also, there’s some classic, and not-so-classic, movies hitting Blu-ray for the first time this week as well.

Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows like The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Monsters vs. Aliens, The Guild Seasons 1 & 2, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Life on Mars: The Complete Series. There’s also a new DVD box set that made us laugh out loud in its awesomeness: Cagney & Lacey: The Menopause Years. Yes, that’s real.

Rare is the occasion where the week biggest release isn't a new blockbuster but rather a septuagenarian, but that's the case this time as a young girl from Kanas eclipses anything New Hollywood has to throw at us. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, September 29, 2009.

Since the advent of Blu-ray, studios have casually mined their catalogues for suitable re-releases, and while the results have often been notable, they're usually nothing to stop the presses over. But every once in a while, that little extra effort is made that blows something out of the water and we get something like MGM's timeless "The Wizard of Oz," which breezes into its 70th birthday with one of the best Blu-ray collections of all time.

Happy DVD release day, people. Hitting stores this week is one of the year's biggest films, the animated film Monsters vs Aliens, plus a number of indie flicks you might have missed including Sam Mendes' Away We Go, Steven Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience starring Sasha Grey, and Shrink starring Kevin Spacey. Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom is also available for rental exclusively at Blockbuster today, but in a strange deal, it will not be available to buy in the U.S. until January (it will be available in Canada next week, however). In terms of TV releases, there are a ton of Fan Favorites collections for classic shows, plus season 4 of How I Met Your Mother, and then there's the massive 70th Anniversary Edition of The Wizard of Oz plus Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal on Blu-ray. 'Labyrinth' Blu-ray Set for September 29th Release

DVD Active is a great resource for not just what's coming out when but also the art and DVD/Blu-ray covers for just about everything you might be interested in. We have shamelessly used their stuff for a while now.

That brings us to Labyrinth, the Jim Henson film starring David Bowie and a young Jennifer Connelly. I almost hate to say it, but this kind of thing would be done with CGI now, and when you look at how big the cast of puppeteers was for Labyrinth, you can understand why. I don't want to give anyone an idea for a remake, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

There are new commentaries included on the Blu-ray, which will be released on September 29th on its own, and then at a point in the future as part of a three-pack of Henson fantasy films that also includes The Dark Crystal and MirrorMask. »

Henson talks up The Dark Crystal 2 and the Fraggle Rock movie

Jim Henson's son Brian has been talking to MTV about two pretty exciting upcoming projects, which are both very very close to entering pre-production. The films are a big-screen version of the 1980's TV show Fraggle Rock and a sequel to The Dark Crystal. Henson had this to say about Fraggle Rock:

"It'll have a strong musical component. It'll be expanded to an older audience. 'Fraggle Rock' [the TV show] was presented... for a pretty exclusively children's audience. The feature film does expand it to be more accessible to a wider audience."

As for The Dark Crystal sequel?

"We have a 'Dark Crystal' sequel, called 'The Power of the Dark Crystal.' It has a very strong script. Both of those projects... are very close to going into pre-production," Henson said. "They're both really ready to go. [The studio is] just [in the process of] putting together the final finance pieces and the final distribution pieces. »

Brian Henson, son of the late Jim Henson, told MTV that the Jim Henson Company is currently working on a follow-up to the 1982 favorite The Dark Crystal.

“We have a Dark Crystal sequel, called The Power of the Dark Crystal. It has a very strong script.”

You’re right, that’s not much. However, if you live in a world where all you live for is muppet news, this nugget is a bombshell. Henson went on to say The Power of the Dark Crystal, along with his other project, a little thing called Fraggle Rock, are in “very active development.” Henson also told MTV that the script for Fraggle also has a “very strong script.”

That’s two, count ‘em, two strong scripts.

As a child of the '80s, I love myself some Muppets and Muppet-like puppets. "Sesame Street," "Fraggle Rock," "The Dark Crystal," "Labyrinth," "The Muppet Show"... these are the things my television raised me on. And so I'm insanely jealous that MTV's Brian Jacks got to sit down and chat with Brian Henson, son of "The Muppets" creator Jim Henson and co-ceo (with his sister Lisa) of the still-thriving Jim Henson Company.

Jacks didn't get to just talk with Henson. He got to pick his brain, to mine him for information. And wouldn't you know it, Henson was all too happy to share. He even volunteered some stuff. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released the complete details for a pair of upcoming fantasy classics Jim Henson worked on set to debut on Blu-ray Disc September 29. Labyrinth with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, and The Dark Crystal starring Henson's cute and diabolical puppets will be presented in their original 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 1080p resolution video and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio. The press release is not entirely clear in relaying which bonus features are new and exclusive to Blu-ray but I think I got them close if not correct below. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring a pair of fantasy favorites from the Jim Henson Company to Blu-Ray on September 29th.

The Master of Muppets' 1982 feature The Dark Crystal, which he co-directed with Frank Oz (Yoda!) and an uncredited Gary Kurtz (Empire Strikes Back) will hit the hi-def market, along with the 1986 David Bowie-starrer Labyrinth.
