Ari Lehman's Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

14 December 2009 2:50 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Much as we'd like to, we can't always get to Every festival that happens. That's why we have friends like Ari Lehman, who travels extensively and who can bring us a blow-by-blow of the events as they happened. Here, then, is Ari's exclusive journal from his recent trip to Spain, where his band, First Jason, played the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei, which is a really long name for one hell of a festival dedicated to horror movies and music. So without further ado...

Firstjason Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

Day 1 -

As we looked out of the airplane window, Barcelona lay sprawled out before us like an overflowing Pirate's chest that had been tipped into the shiny blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I looked up to the north where I saw a dark, craggy mountaintop looming in the distance. »

Finals Week: 'Gender Roles in Scary Movies'

14 December 2009 2:31 PM, PST | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Welcome to Finals Week, inspired by real life college finals! We'll have a new academic paper on horror films every day this week!

Gender Roles within Scary Movies by Alex Boles

“What’s your favorite scary movie, Sidney?”

These words haunted American society for at least five years when Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 3 were released in 1996, 1997 and 2000 respectively. At least, the words haunted middle-aged women home alone in their big houses in the middle of nowhere scared to answer the phone at night. The fear and portrayal of women also allowed stereotypes and other characters to form for the future of women roles in scary movies. Sidney, played by Neve Campbell, says at the beginning of the first Scream film after receiving a phone call from one of the killers, that there is no point in watching scary movies because they all display the same representation of women. »

Drawing on Your Nightmares: Nihilism and Horror

10 December 2009 6:22 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

I’m sorry to have gone delinquent on my posts here, because this has been a crazy year for me and horror. My Solomon Kane series "The Castle of the Devil" was well received, and I pushed that adventure story about as far as I could, with the help of Mario Guevara’s macabre visuals. I made it to Crypticon in Seattle and met Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Atkins, toured the sites where the Green River Killer’s victims were found, and read and watched as much horror as I could get my hands on.

As my previous posts show, I’m a little old-fashioned, though not completely retro. I’m writing this while watching The Ring (in this case I buy American) and dying to see the final episode of "Dexter" season four this weekend, and the last comic I read was the new issue of Hack/Slash from »

Cold Prey 2 (Film Review)

9 December 2009 7:36 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

I gave Cold Prey 2 (aka Fritt Vilt II) a quiet nod in my 10 Examples Of a Pulse In The Modern Slasher article after fully acknowledging it's predecessor in my primary list. But last night I opted to give Cold Prey 2 another go-round. So last night, Heineken free and of sound mind I popped CP2  in the DVD player and prepped for a nice refresher.

Well, nice refresher isn't even a sufficient description. It's more like a slap in the face followed by a guttural voice echoing  throughout my living room 'where were you the first time you watched this flick? No stranger to Heineken that night eh?!'

The picture is absolutely brilliant! Jannicke (Ingrid Bolse Berdal) is found freezing - pick axe in hand - in the Norwegian mountains. She's taken to a local hospital where she tells authorities of the horrific incidents that occurred (in Cold Prey), and »

Stephen Susco Penning 'Hack/Slash' Adaptation!

15 November 2009 11:34 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

It has been one long road to getting Cassie Hack on the big screen, but hey, we're getting close! With Fredrik Bond attached to direct, Relativity has tapped Stephen Susco to pen the latest draft of the live-action adaptation of Hack/Slash, a film that should kick off a brand new franchise. The comic centers on Cassie Hack, a woman who symbolizes the lone girl who survives at the end of every horror movie. Hack not only survived, she has become a killer of killers and travels to small towns across the country hunting slashers in the vein of Halloween's Michael Myers, Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees and A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger. She is partnered on her journey with Vlad, a hulking companion who serves as her protector. Susco is also writing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3Dfor Twisted Pictures and The Butcherhouse Chronicles for Paramount Pictures. »

Denver Film Festival: I've Seen 'Troll 2' and Lived

15 November 2009 10:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When I was writing the short-lived Horror Virgin series for Horror Squad, I received a lot of messages asking me if I had Troll 2 scheduled as part of my education. I would constantly stress to them that the point was for me to watch good horror movies, not bad ones, but it didn't matter. Everyone still thought I should see Troll 2 right after Halloween or Friday the 13th.

Well, I've seen it and I'm glad I waited to see it at a midnight showing with like-minded people instead of sitting at home with a copy. This is the kind of movie that needs to be seen with a crowd and with a couple of drinks in your system because it's really that bad. I don't know if it's the worst movie I've ever seen (the 1986 Trick or Treat comes awfully close, as does Frogs), but it certainly comes very close. »

'Friday The 13th': Ranking The Series From Top To Bottom

13 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

by Kyle Anderson

Today is Friday the 13th, the unluckiest day of the year! That gives me an excuse to indulge in one of my favorite pasttimes as an amateur "Friday the 13th" historian. I can't remember when my obsession with the adventures of Jason Voorhees really began, but I do know that I've studied this series from top to bottom multiple times.

Perhaps you're new to the "Friday" game and need some guidance. The natural urge would be to start from the beginning, but that would be a mistake that would result in sadness and nausea. Since the continuity between movies doesn't matter in the slightest, it's best to take them out of order. But where to start? Glad you asked. Here are the 12 "Friday the 13th" films, ranked in order of greatness from truly excellent to whatever "Jason Goes to Hell" is. Stay lucky!

"Paranormal Activity" Inspires Title Change

4 November 2009 3:53 PM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Katie Featherston a.k.a. Katie from "Paranormal Activity" becomes one of Hollywood's fastest rising stars of 2009 thanks to the horror film.

Now, an indie horror flick that she starred in called "Walking Distance" has undergone a name change to "Experimental Activity."

You gotta be kidding me!

But, the name change sort of makes sense because the film is about a small town that is subject to a government medical experiment.

Although we all know that the name change is because of the hit film "Paranormal Activity."

"Experimental Activity" also stars Adrienne King from the first two "Friday the 13th" films from the 80s. »

'Paranormal Activity' star Katie Featherston's new movie: 'Experimental Activity'

4 November 2009 3:42 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Once upon a time, there was an indie horror flick called Walking Distance, about a small town where weird government experiments happen. It starred Friday the 13th's (and Friday the 13th Part 2's!) Adrienne King, plus a bunch of other people you probably don't know. Or didn't until one of said people, Katie Featherston, became an overnight sensation thanks to Paranormal Activity. So how might Walking Distance's distribution company celebrate this unexpected windfall? Change the movie's name to...Experimental Activity. Get it? Of course you do. "Walking Distance could be any genre and that is confusing for »

Afm '09: 'Walking Distance' Renamed to 'Experimental Activity'

3 November 2009 10:59 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Only in Hollywood, sigh. The indie horror movie Walking Distance, currently in postproduction, has undergone a name change to Experimental Activity now that one of its actors, Katie Featherston, has gone on to star in the the current theatrical hit Paranormal Activity. Showcase Entertainment has acquired international rights to "Experimental Activity," which revolves around a small town that is subject to a government medical experiment. "Clearly having the fastest-rising star in the business is a feather in the cap, but we feel the film stands on its own as a cool psychological thriller," Showcase president David Jackson said. The film also features Adrienne King, who appeared in the 1980 version of "Friday the 13th" and its first sequel, Glenn Morshower, who's been seen as Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce on "24," and horror vet/scream queen Debbie Rochon. »

Tron Legacy Writers Move the Pointer to Ouija

1 November 2009 10:32 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

After speeding through the 80s arcade games of the “Tron” universe, “Tron Legacy” writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are going lo-tech with an adaptation of “Ouija” based on the popular board “game”.  Since I haven’t read the script for “Tron Legacy”, I’m not sure what made Kitsis and Horowitz the men for this job.  My best guess is that their agent and a movie executive whipped out “Ouija” and when the agent asked if Kitsis and Horowitz should write the movie, the spirits moved the pointer to “Yes”.  The spirits then used the numbers at the bottom to determine their quote.  The spirits seem to like the number “0″.

To read more about the project, hit the j…u…m…p…

“Ouija” is being produced by Platinum Dunes (the remakes of “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”) as well as Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro. »

Feldman 'Squeamish' Despite Horror Acting

1 November 2009 5:46 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former child star Corey Feldman finds it amusing his career has been based in horror movies - because he's so squeamish.

The Goonies actor admits he can't stand watching gruesome pictures and finds it ironic he ended up predominantly in the genre.

He says, "It's really funny because I was just thinking the other night that for a guy who's not into gore, I sure am in a lot of horror movies.

"There's been Gremlins, the Friday the 13th movies, Lost Boys, Tales From The Crypt, the new internet series Splatter and I also host the EyeGore Awards at Universal Studios.

"I like the occasional horror movie but I'm very squeamish, I don't like the gory parts. It wasn't part of the masterplan but somehow I became Vincent Price (iconic horror actor). I'm not sure how that happened. I should maybe put an end to it but it's a lot of fun making them and I really enjoy it." »

Halloween Special Part 2: Michael Myers vs Me

1 November 2009 10:16 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To bring us out of Halloween I thought I would do a daring deed and take on Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger in a no holds bared face off (literally) where I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films to determine once and for all who is champion slasher, Part 1 was on Jason, Part 2 is Michael Myers.

The three killers have haunted us through our childhoods with each horror legend bringing us movies which have completely terrified and equally bemused us with poor sequels and terrible plots

Beware pictures of blood and gore to follow.

Michael Myers is very similar to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger in that nothing seems to kill him, but the big difference is that Michael Myers is the only non-supernatural monster out of the three, he is a killing machine that has been shot numerous times, blown up in fire, stabbed »

The three killers have haunted us through our childhoods with each horror legend bringing us movies which have completely terrified and equally bemused us with poor sequels and terrible plots
