The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday awarded A24’s Past Lives its Best Feature and the film’s Celine Song the Best Director in a ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica, giving the indie romantic drama a boost as it heads toward the Oscars where it is up for Best Picture.
Past Lives topped a marquee Best Feature category that included Netflix’s May December, Amazon MGM Studios’ American Fiction, Searchlight’s All of Us Strangers, Sony Pictures Classics’ We Grown Now and Mubi’s Passages.
“There is a concept in our film, an Eastern concept, and it’s called inyeon,” Song, making her feature directorial debut, said in her acceptance speech with her producers and cast. “It is about how just by being in the same space and time in this life, it means we actually knew each other for many, many lives that came before this one.

Alice Eve battles paranormal spirits in the latest trailer for Haunting of the Queen Mary, a supernatural horror mystery that has two families violently entangled when sailing aboard the real-life ocean liner on Halloween night in 1938 and the present day.
As Erin, played by Eve, and husband Patrick (Joel Fry) board the infamous ship with their young son Lukas, played by Lenny Rush, their voyage comes to resemble, in mystery and violence, the experience of another family that sailed aboard the namesake ship in 1938.
As Erin begins to see the haunted ghosts the ocean liner holds from its dark past, she and her husband realize there’s only one way out for them — into the ship’s depths where violent secrets are revealed.

For the third year in a row—and fourth in the last five—White Horse Pictures finds itself in the middle of the Emmy horse race.
In 2020, the White Horse production The Apollo, about the legendary performing arts venue in Harlem, earned Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Last year, White Horse’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart was nominated for six Emmys, winning one. This year it’s back in contention with Lucy and Desi, Amy Poehler’s documentary about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, which is nominated for half a dozen Emmys—more than any other documentary.
“I’m ecstatic,” says White Horse Pictures partner Jeanne Elfant Festa of the Emmy recognition. She’s a producer of the film, along with Poehler, Mark Monroe and White Horse co-founder and principal Nigel Sinclair. “It’s an honor, it’s a thrill. We have the best...

Exclusive: White Horse Pictures and Homegrown Pictures have teamed on an untitled documentary feature about the legendary musician and genius keyboardist Billy Preston. He was called the Fifth Beatle, because he the only non-member ever to be credited on a Beatles recording. He had plenty of his own hits and co-wrote the song Joe Cocker made famous, You Are So Beautiful. Fifteen years after his death in 2006, Billy Preston was inducted this past weekend into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Paris Barclay, the multi-Emmy-winning director, producer, and writer will direct. Cheo Hodari Coker is writing the film alongside Barclay.
The film is produced by Homegrown’s Stephanie Allain, White Horse’s Jeanne Elfant Festa, (Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart) and Nigel Sinclair. The exec producers are Barclay, Daniel Shaw, G. Marq Roswell, Olivia Harrison, Jonathan Clyde, and White Horse Pictures’ Nicholas Ferrall and Cassidy Hartmann. Coker is co-producing and Erikka Yancy serves as the film’s supervising producer. Pic is presented by Concord Originals alongside Impact Partners, Chicago Media Project, and Play/Action Pictures, Polygram Entertainment, Dave Knott, and Sobey Road Entertainment.
Said Allain: “A singular figure in music history, Billy Preston lent his genius to elevate the most celebrated artists of the 20th Century. Grateful to work with this team, using this soundtrack to explore his personal journey and finally place him front and center.” Barclay said “the Billy Preston we know was an incomparable musician,” but the Billy we’ll see in this documentary was a mass of contradictions. I’m thrilled to dig deeper into the complex man under the Afro, and behind the famous smile.”
A self taught prodigy keyboard player, Preston was just 16 when he met the not-yet-famous Beatles while playing for Little Richard while they toured Hamburg in 1962. He befriended the young, impoverished band by sneaking them food and drinks. Later in the ’60s, this led to Preston playing on The Beatles’ Let It Be and Abbey Road albums as a credited musician, and performing with the Beatles in their last live performance as a group – the famous Roof Top concert. The Grammy Award-winning artist had solo career that included number one hits, and working with The Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nat King Cole, Sly Stone, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson, among others. Preston is featured in the upcoming Peter Jackson-directed documentary The Beatles: Get Back.
Despite an enviable career in music, Preston had a challenging personal story that involved sexual abuse he endured as a child. He struggled with his sexuality and had substance abuse problems he used to make his pain. Only later in life did he come to terms with his truth and so find his peace.
Barclay and Hodari Coker asked to make a shout out to those who knew Preston or worked with him, who and may have recordings, photographs, or personal memories to make contact through http://www.billyprestondoc.com.
UTA Independent Film Group with White Horse Pictures helped raise the funding and they will broker sales of the film.
Allain’s Homegrown is repped by UTA, First Artists and Marcy Morris; Barclay is ICM and Lovett Management.

The first full trailer for Ron Howard’s documentary “Pavarotti: Genius Is Forever” portrays Luciano Pavarotti as a humble, trusting and grateful but also insecure person, despite his gifts and international fame.
In this emotional trailer for the film — and honestly, it’s hard not to start to tear up when you hear the great tenor sing “Nessun Dorma” — Howard starts with Pavarotti as a child and takes us on a journey into becoming something of a rock star as an opera singer. And you know he’s a rock star when you hear it from a real rock star.
“The reason he is great is he lived those songs,” U2’s Bono says in the trailer. “The mistakes you’ve made, the hopes, the desires, all that comes crashing into the performance.”

Luciano Pavarotti was one of the most successful tenors of all time, yet the famous Italian opera singer struggled with doubt about his talent. In the first trailer for Ron Howard’s upcoming documentary, Pavarotti, the legendary singer expresses uncertainty at a young age.
Pavarotti, whose father was a tenor, said his mother always told him he had “a beautiful voice.” Yet the young performer would ask if she was just being kind.
“I said momma you say that because you are my mother,” Pavarotti recalled, adding that his mother would respond, “No, because I don’t say that when I hear your father.”
Insiders also describe the singer as a “nervous wreck before every performance” in the trailer from CBS Films. The film hits theaters June 7.

CBS Films’ upcoming documentary “Pavarotti” got its first look during the 61st Grammy Awards on Sunday night. It’s the third music doc from Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, following his 2013 look at Jay-z’s “Made in America” and the 2016 doc “The Beatles: Eight Days A Week.”
