Barry Keoghan is in negotiations to join Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo in Amazon MGM Studios adaptation of Don Winslow’s novella Crime 101. He will co-star with Chris Hemsworth, who also is in talks to star and produce alongside producing partner Ben Grayson. The film will be released in theaters next year.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the original short story by Winslow has shades of Heat as it follows high-level jewel thefts that are taking place up and down the Pacific Coast, which police have linked to Colombian cartels. Detective Lou Lubesnick has other ideas, and he zeroes in on one perp, a thief looking for a final score.
Bart Layton is directing and wrote the script. Producers include Story Factory’s Shane Salerno, Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan, Raw’s Layton and Dimitri Doganis and Derrin Schlesinger. Raw’s Joely Fether will executive produce.

Winning an Oscar can open many doors. In the case of Johnnie Burn, who won the Academy Award for best sound on Sunday night for his work on Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” alongside Tarn Willers, it was a studio’s door the very next day.
The morning after the ceremony, the British sound designer — who also worked on the sound for Yorgos Lanthimos’ multiple Oscar-winning “Poor Things” — turned up at the Fox Studio Lot in Los Angeles to start mixing his next project, an untitled new feature starring Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan and the Weeknd directed by Trey Edward Shults.
However, Burn had completely forgotten to bring his ID to get through security.
“The Vanity Fair party had left me a little fuzzy headed,” he tells Variety.
Thankfully, Burn did have his freshly minted Oscar statue in his bag, which he pulled out and offered the guard.

The Zone of Interest. When you start to really hear a movie, you’ll never be able to unhear it. The sound designer, like the cinematographer, is an artist disguised as a technician, a wielder of microphones and mixers whose deepest desire is to serve a cinematic vision. Sound design usually stays in the shadows, but sometimes a film comes along that really makes you listen: Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (2023) is one of those films. Its soundscapes are intense, involving, and essential to our narrative comprehension of the film; this is sound design as storytelling, as counterpoint, as argument. The artist in disguise behind The Zone of Interest is Johnnie Burn, a British sound designer who, over the past decade, has carved a reputation as the ear of new auteur cinema. Through longstanding collaborations with Glazer and Yorgos Lanthimos (Burn is also behind the surreal soundscapes of...

Jenna Ortega is teasing a more terrifying Season 2 of “Wednesday.”
The Netflix series, which landed Ortega her first Emmy nomination, will begin filming in April. Ortega told E! News at the 2023 Emmys on Monday, January 15, that the new scripts lean more into the horror elements of the Tim Burton series. Ortega is also serving as an executive producer for the second season.
“I’ve received some scripts for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into more horror,” Ortega said. “It’s really, really exciting because, all throughout the show, while Wednesday does need a little bit of an arc, she never really changes, and that’s the wonderful thing about her.
Ortega continued, “There’s really, really good one-liners, and I think everything’s bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”

An untitled film led by Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan and The Weeknd is said to be a loose remake of the 1990 thriller, Misery.
We’ve known for a little while that filmmaker Trey Edward Shults is cooking up something interesting for his next film, but according to reports, he may actually be tackling a ‘loose remake’ of Stephen King’s Misery. King’s 1987 novel got a classic adaptation from director Rob Reiner in 1990 – it’s the one where a crazed fan keeps her favourite writer hostage, forcing him to rewrite his stories to suit her tastes.
The cast that the It Comes At Night and Krisha filmmaker has assembled for the project already made a few waves when it was first announced: both Barry Keoghan and Jenna Ortega are very much in demand at the moment. Music star The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) is also set to appear. And while...

At the risk of sounding glib, nobody plays a freak quite like Barry Keoghan.
Over the course of his still nascent career, Keoghan has established himself as a performer who thrives at playing outcasts and outsiders, men branded as weirdos by both the audience and the people around them. The Irish actor can play a normal person if he wants — he first gained recognition as the likable young kid who dies a tragic death in “Dunkirk,” and he’s one of the best things about the otherwise disastrous Marvel film “Eternals” — but more off-kilter parts are really where he shines. The guiding star for his film image is the 2017 movie that really first garnered him American recognition, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer.” In Yorgos Lanthimos’ off-putting and icy thriller, Keoghan plays an awkward young man who inserts himself into the life of a cardiac surgeon (Colin Farrell) and wreaks havoc on his family.

Jenna Ortega is trying on playing a seductress for size. The “Beetlejuice 2” and “Wednesday” star leads psychological thriller “Miller’s Girl” in what appears to be a ’90s-esque tale of twisted teen power dynamics set against the backdrop of an elite university.
Martin Freeman stars as the titular Mr. Miller, a teacher who becomes entangled with talented student Cairo (Ortega), who has an agenda all her own. As 18-year-old Cairo taunts Mr. Miller into a game of truth or dare, a more sinister scheme of blackmailing ensues.
The official synopsis reads: “A talented young writer (Ortega) embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.”

On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). Jenna Ortega may be a fan of scary movies, but she’s no longer a part of the “Scream 7.”
Following rumors that Ortega was looking to part ways with the Spyglassfilms after her breakout role in Netflix series “Wednesday,” the actress confirmed she will not appear in “Scream 7,” sources tell IndieWire. Deadline first reported the news, citing that Ortega’s contract was being reevaluated prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Ortega is set to film “Wednesday” Season 2 in Ireland from April 2024 into the summer, and that “Scream 7” has a scheduling conflict.
Ortega starred in the fifth “Scream” film as Tara Carpenter, which served as a franchise reboot (meta-ly deemed “requel” in the movie). She reprised the role for “Scream VI.”
Ortega’s announcement comes on the heels of co-star Melissa Barrera, who plays Ortega’s onscreen half-sister, being fired for antisemitic comments that production company Spyglass Entertainment deemed antisemitic.

After Krisha (2015), It Comes at Night (2017) and Waves (2019), American indie filmmaker Trey Edward Shults might actually be shooting from both sides of the hip in 2024. The first project to see the light could very well be a film he developed with Abel Tesfaye aka “The Weeknd”. They co-wrote the currently untitled project together, and The Weeknd stars alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. Cinematographer Chayse Irvin is onboard and for the composers we find Opn + The Weeknd. Production would have taken place in February so this is more than ready acquisitions.

This story about Riley Keough and “Daisy Jones & the Six” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She walked out into the blue stage lights like she’d been there before, a gossamer cape swirling in the wind as she warily eyed the guitar player standing a few feet away. The wariness gradually melted, replaced by a gamut of emotions: playfulness, then a passion that felt driven and a joy that almost seemed desperate. She was flirtatious and seductive when sharing a microphone, but when her partner left the stage she grabbed hold of a love song and turned it into an instrument of salvation.
This all happened during the concert scenes in the final episode of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” and it added up to one thing: In the title role, Riley Keough was pretty much a rock star. In one way,...

Each year, the Film Independent Spirit Awards gives the John Cassavetes Award to the year’s best feature made for under $1,000,000. In this column, film critic David Bax compares and contrasts past Cassavetes winners with their most recent work.

Trey Edward Shults has made three feature films so far and, technically, only one of them (2017’s It Comes at Night) is a horror movie. But from the opening shot of 2015’s Krisha (which won him the John Cassavetes Award at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards in February of 2016)—a close-up of a woman’s face, stricken with an emotion we can’t quite place yet and accompanied by rumbling, ominous music—it’s clear that Shults will be exercising a talent for unnerving us, no matter what genre he may be working in.

Academy Award nominee and BAFTA winner Barry Keoghan is circling his next high-profile role, with the actor in negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s untitled “Gladiator” sequel.
If the deal closes, Keoghan would join fellow 2023 Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (a best actor nominee for “Aftersun”), who is set to star in the Paramount Pictures film. The sequel follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office, and now Scott is returning to direct and produce the sequel.
The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vows revenge against Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Since Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator,” Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), in the sequel. Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta.

The star of the 2023 Oscar season was “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” but you could be forgiven for thinking it was A24. The company picked up nine Oscars at the ceremony and there wasn’t a safe commercial bet among them.
On top of launching the zany ambition of “Everything Everywhere” into a $107 million worldwide gross, A24 also scored two Oscars for Darren Aronofsky’s divisive “The Whale,” which sneaked its way past $35 million accumulated over a gradual release plan. Its nominees also included two Cannes acquisitions, Best International Feature Film nominee “Close” and “Aftersun,” which secured a Best Actor nomination for Paul Mescal and solidified his stardom. Despite the blockbuster successes of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022, the year’s big winner was a company that didn’t exist when these franchises were born.

Jenna Ortega reluctantly agreed to recreate the dance scene from Tim Burton’s Netflix series Wednesday for her Saturday Night Live promo on Wednesday.
“Honestly, this is really well-written, I just don’t feel like I want to do the Wednesday dance for promo because we’ve seen so much of that already and I think it’s time to do something new,” the actress tells the Please Don’t Destroy crew in the clip. The guys, who are dressed in their best Wednesday Addams frills, are passively distraught.

The scariest thing for newly-minted scream queen Jenna Ortega? Conflicting production schedules.
The “Wednesday” star revealed that she was “devastated” to not return to serial killer drama “You” for Season 4 after making her series debut in the second season as Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) confidante Ellie.
“I was devastated,” Ortega told Entertainment Tonight of not being able to return to the series. “Easily one of my favorite sets that I’ve ever, ever been on. I was so devastated. I miss Ellie, and I’ve been wanting to go back to Ellie for a long time, but I was in Romania shooting ‘Wednesday.’ I couldn’t travel back and forth with the pandemic and everything like that, and when you’re committed to a show there’s just no way that it could’ve worked out.”
Ortega added, “But that one, that bummed me out. I tried.”

Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. will venture with director Barry Jenkins to the Pride Lands, with the actors set to voice Mufasa and Scar in Disney’s upcoming prequel to “The Lion King.”
After the studio’s 2019 photo-realistic adaptation of the animated classic grossed $1.6 billion at the global box office, Disney was eager to return to the vast savanna and greenlit a follow-up with Jenkins, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning “Moonlight,” at the helm. It’s unclear what exactly the film will be about, but it’s expected to focus on the early years of Mufasa, the regal father of Simba, and his menacing younger brother Scar.
Pierre, who recently worked with Jenkins on the historical TV series “The Underground Railroad,” is set to play Mufasa. Harrison Jr., best known for leading the Trey Edward Shults drama “Waves,” will portray Scar, whose birth-name is Taka.

Fitness for the Prosecution: Von Horn Sings Song for the Lonely in the Digital Age
In the digital age, perhaps now more than ever, love is still the only thing there’s just too little of, to borrow from the famed Bacharach tune which Jackie DeShannon recorded way back in 1965. It’s certainly the elusive absence gnawing the considerable void of the lead character in Magnus von Horn’s increasingly poignant sophomore film Sweat, which focuses on the somewhat isolating effect of social media stardom on the life of a fitness instructor/influencer in Warsaw. If Swedish helmer von Horn’s 2015 debut The Here After (a drama which shares similar themes with last year’s Waves from Trey Edward Shults) brought him back to his native country, his latest film displays an astute cross-cultural straddling in a feature which explores universal motifs in decidedly Polish parameters.…

Indie filmmaker Sean Baker has emerged for his first project since 2017’s Academy Award-nominated feature “The Florida Project,” and it’s a dazzling, 1970s-esque, gritty and glamorous throwback on the streets of New York for fashion line Khaite. The short film serves as a showcase for Khaite’s fall/winter collections for 2021. Check it out below.
Shot on the streets of New York and within its subterranean corridors, the short hearkens back to classic New York cinema from the ’70s. The film was produced by Prodject in creative collaboration with Superprime.
“This project has honestly been one of the most creatively cathartic experiences I have worked on. This is our crazy love letter to New York City and I hope audiences have as much fun watching as we had making it,” Baker said.
Baker’s next feature “Red Rocket,” starring Simon Rex as a washed-up porn star returning to his small hometown in Texas,...

Creepy isn’t the same as scary.
Of course horror movies can be scary simply by using loud noises and sudden movements to make their audiences jump, but creepy is harder to pull off. To be effectively creepy, a film needs to establish a certain atmosphere; it needs to draw you in and make you care. It needs to give you something to think about when you’re trying to drop off to sleep at night; to make you wonder whether that creaking noise down the hallway was just the house settling or something lurking in the shadows. Creepy stays with you. It gives you goosebumps.
Here are 85 of the best horror movies (in no particular order) to chill your bones. Enjoy the nightmares.

Tyler (Kelvin Harrison Jr) has everything going for him, the star of the school wrestling team, a beautiful girlfriend and a life of endless parties. As the film progresses and we follow his story of dealing with an injury that could ruin his chances of being a future athlete, we see his father (Sterling K Brown) baring down and adding even more weight...
