Good visuals, pandering speech and situations
27 May 2005
Caution: This review contains profanity (of course).

This is the kind of movie that reveals and celebrates where our Hollywood culture is today. It is high on visual effects, low on everything else. As is often the case now, it seems that the writers are pandering to the 13-year-old crowd, even though the film carries an R rating. I mean, really, how many dick, pussy, asshole, vomiting references are needed to make a point? Are these guys aware of the concept of subtle? I get the impression that the writers are locked in some adolescent stage where any sexual reference makes them giggle, and for whom to have the power to put their vulgar take on things on the screen must be orgasmic. In short, the film has interesting and clever visuals but no class. But then, that's pretty much how things are today, in film and elsewhere. Don't bother seeing it.

Robert Duvall + Tommy Lee Jones = excellence
30 April 2005
This is my favorite western film. Although overdone in parts, it has an overall subtly that is highly enjoyable. Robert Duvall is perhaps the best actor of our generation and his performance here is wonderful. There is something smart, wise, or funny in everything he says and does. When he is on screen, I usually expect to learn something about the human condition - and I am rarely let down. The toughness and humanness of Jones' character blends well with the character of Duvall. There's is a story of friendship, respect and love that is rare for films and even in life. I am hesitant to see the sequels as they will likely disappoint, given the standard set here. Excellent movie.

fascinating and funny

This movie has a lot going for it. First, there's a superb acting by both Turner and Cage. Both embody the 60s. The cars, settings and attitudes are fully representative of the era and bring back memories of a seemingly simpler time. But, in this movie, things are complicated by the culture of a later period. I found this movie enjoyable and thought-provoking. It is fun, also, to see Jim Carrey in what must have been his first (or nearly so) role. The mannerisms and cartoonish characteristics that would make him a super-star are evident. In this movie there is character, with one theme about how people treat others, especially thoise of us with personality or other challenges. Good stuff.
