This is my favorite western film. Although overdone in parts, it has an overall subtly that is highly enjoyable. Robert Duvall is perhaps the best actor of our generation and his performance here is wonderful. There is something smart, wise, or funny in everything he says and does. When he is on screen, I usually expect to learn something about the human condition - and I am rarely let down. The toughness and humanness of Jones' character blends well with the character of Duvall. There's is a story of friendship, respect and love that is rare for films and even in life. I am hesitant to see the sequels as they will likely disappoint, given the standard set here. Excellent movie.
