I loved it and the kids in the audience loved it!
14 May 2012
I must admit I am a big fan of the three stooges, and I was worried about the low ratings given to the film by many IMDb users. Bottom line: I loved it! This movie was more aimed at kids, and the kids in the audience laughed out loud constantly, which made me feel good. It was a combination of three three stooges meet Annie. They did a great job with the film and I really enjoyed it and wasn't disappointed at all. The scene where they were disguised as nurses in the nursery was my favorite part. Three stooges fans won't be disappointed. People who don't find the three stooges funny might not like it. I thought all of the actors were good, especially all of the stooges!

Good if you like family arguments
5 March 2009
If your idea of entertainment is watching family members yell at each other, offer bitter sarcasm, and make each other feel bad about themselves, this is the movie for you! My French teacher told me this was one of his favorite films, so I ordered it from France in the European version. I was very disappointed. Granted, my French isn't perfect, but I understood most of it and still thought it wasn't very funny. In fact, it made me uncomfortable, and very little struck me as funny or entertaining. I guess the French have a different sense of humor. Because the screen play was adapted from a play, almost all of the story takes place inside of a bar, and this takes some of the potential entertainment value away. There isn't much of a plot--I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did.

Funny, Cute, and Touching
11 March 2008
The group which saw this film with me loved it. It has a perfect combination of humor (sometimes slapstick, sometimes subtle), emotion, and suspense as to what will happen next. The scenery is also well done. Highly recommended--you won't be sorry you saw it! You are really pulling for the town to succeed, and the ending is great. You never know what happens till the very end.

Each character has a unique and funny personality--kind of like all of the characters in Mayberry. The women in the town are especially hilarious, mainly during the scenes in which they listen to bugged conversations with the doctor to find out what things they need to do to make him fall in love with the town. A very cute film!

Boring, bizarre, unfunny, and a waste of time
23 June 2007
Based upon the recommendation of a friend, my wife and I invited another couple to this film. I really apologized to them--all 4 of us hated it and spent the whole time looking at our watches waiting for the film to finally end. Half the vignettes are bizarre, with very little entertainment value. There were few scenes of Paris--for example, I was looking forward to seeing some pictures of the Latin Quarter, but I couldn't really recognize anything. Most of the scene was inside a bar. No one in the theater laughed at anything, or reacted in any way. If you like bizarre, pretentious, pseudo-intellectual films, don't miss this. If you are down to earth like me, you will be sorry you saw it.

Disappointing Narcissicm
7 May 2005
Does the emperor wear no clothes? As soon as the movie started, I knew I had been had. After doing my homework by reading almost every review in every national newspaper, and most user comments on IMDb.com, I concluded this should be a good movie. There was nary a unkind word said about it. There is a type of French movie, usually raved about, that lacks drama, conflict, humor, or characters you can identify with. After two unbelievably long tortuous hours, I discovered this movie is two hours too long. It was as if the reviewers were praising the previous works of the directors and writers. If comparisons were made to Woody Allen's movies they are right. It resembles his last four movies, all of which bombed and as the French say, was chiant! Maybe I am the only one on earth who disliked this film, but if I were you, I would avoid it. My wife agreed with me, although I have to admit she slept through most of it.

Horrible Film
20 February 2004
I felt as if I were at a cartoon made for gifted children and I wasn't gifted. One could sense there was clever social comment in the film--I just couldn't figure out what it was. It wasn't funny. Every five minutes I looked at my watch and wanted to get the heck out of there. If you are a pretentious pseudo-intellectual who can make sense out of the bizzare, this is the film you have been waiting for! If not, don't waste your time.

Huge Disappointment
31 January 2004
First of all, the movie wasn't funny. The dialogue was stupid. The story did not develop any reason why Julia Roberts would like Hugh Grant. There was no chemistry between them at all. It was long. It was slow. I was embarassed at having rented the film for my guests. Do yourself a favor--Avoid this film at all costs! It sucks!

Grabbed my interest and held it!

This is one of my favorite films of all times! It is suspensful, you are on the edge of your seat for the entire film. Just when you think the plot can't thicken any more it gets even more thick! It is one of the few films I have seen where I never looked at my watch. Don't miss it!

I suffered for 106 minutes
28 March 2003
We chose this movie based upon a good review in local paper. I knew we were in trouble when some friends leaving the film said it was slow and very disappointing. They were right. It was the most boring movie I've ever seen. No, to be honest, Moulin Rouge was worse. If you want to suffer great pain, don't miss All the Real Girls! The lines in the script make little sense. The story isn't funny. No one in the theater laughed (maybe a chuckle here and there). When it was over there was stunned silence--"How could a movie be this bad?", I figured the audience must be thinking. The male lead seemed to have an IQ of 45 for a while, then he would sound like his IQ was 150, then back to 45, etc. Nice scenery though. Bottom line: It stunk big time!

Cute, but not fantastic
11 September 2002
Many friends told me it was great and I had to see it. So my expectations were probably too high. Lower your expectations, and you will enjoy the film. I thought it was only ok--not bad, in fact good, but not up there with the best comedies I have seen.

Silly, but guys will like it!
11 September 2002
I can understand why this movie received such a low rating. Women will be offended by the blatant sexism in the film, and the plot is very shallow. The film is kind of like one of those old Love That Bob series with Robert Cummings. The slapstick situations that are, well, funny. However, being a normal male that likes to look at hot women, I enjoyed the film. It also reminded me of Superman, where Lois Lane loved Superman, she didn't like Clark Kent though. Gerard Depardieu doesn't like Judith Godreche as a brilliant research person with her hair up and wearing glasses, but when she dresses up like a Bimbo and acts like one--he loves her! Ok, so it wasn't one of those sophisticated deep films. Even though it probably deserves its low IMDB rating of 4, I'm ashamed to admit it--I liked it.

A Disappointment
19 November 2001
After all of the buildup and praise this film has received, I expected it to be terrific. Instead, I found it slow, boring, and somewhat bizare. There is little dialog, with rather a narrator supplying much of the explanations. The audience chuckled a few times during the movie, but it wasn't really very funny. The ending did make one feel good, but it wasn't worth watching the whole film for that. As long as your expectations aren't too high and you expect kind of a bizare artsy type film, you might enjoy it. Otherwise, be forwarned.

Beyond Bad....Horrible
9 June 2001
This is the first film I ever walked out on. I am at home right now while my wife and our friends watch the rest of this boring overhyped pice of junk. The diaglogue consists of the most inane drivel you have ever heard, making no sense. It is like an overacted melodrama, but there is no story or vilain or anything of any kind to hold your interest. In my life I have never walked out on any film (even though I've wanted to), but this film was so boring and horrible, I was about to climb up the wall. I was so upset at how miserable this film was, I left to come home and do the world a service by writing this review. There are several other IMDB reviews about Moulin Rouge similar to this one. If you don't believe me, then believe them!

An all time classic!
24 February 2001
After seeing this movie, I wanted to write a review saying how funny this film was, so anyone checking IMDB would know. Luckily, all of the other reviews already capture the hilarious nature of this film. I can only add that my French teacher said most French people have seen the movie many times and practically know it by heart. Even though she has seen it many times, she wanted to see it yet again. Everybody will like this film, unless you really hate slapstick. If you are Jewish, it is especially funny, but if you aren't its still a complete riot.

Lots of funny characters, very entertaining
21 February 2000
I really enjoyed the film, in which a surprise audit of the Charles VII Hotel in Paris causes pandemonium. The Concierge is played by Daniel Prevost, who was hilarious as the tax agent in "Le Diner de Cons." When the hotel director mistakenly believes that a homeless person is a disguised tax auditor, all heck breaks loose. The film is chocked full of funny characters, including Richard, the homeless person; Jackquot, a street person trying to raise money by pretending to be from the latest country in need; Lucie, a hotel prostitute; and Roaul, a chicken farmer trying to impress. Tenue Correcte Exigee is a cute farce well worth spending 93 minutes watching.

Clever idea, but it doesn't work for me.
27 December 1999
Before I rented the video, I read the external reviews and user comments on IMDB. The essence of most of them was that the film was very well done and funny. I felt like I was watching a different movie. I found it boring, not at all funny, and a total waste of time. If the acting is good and the plot is clever, it doesn't carry the day if there are few laughs, if it is slow, the characters one dimensional. I kept waiting for the plot to thicken and for the laughs to start. It never happened.
