Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peek physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed.

Is this now an age of TV caution? A brace of big swings at this week’s London TV Screenings belie that trend, and few come bigger than the English-language action thriller “Paris Has Fallen,” which Studiocanal launches at this week’s London TV Screenings.
Like other major Ltvs plays, it takes a mainstream genre – such as, elsewhere, the historical drama (“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light”), true crime (“A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story”) and the bio – and aims to elevate them to another level.
This is Studiocanal’s biggest TV production of 2024. “‘Paris Has Fallen’ has ambition, scale and production values that I haven’t see in so many series,” says Anne Chérel, EVP global sales and distribution at Studiocanal.
Such scale comes with its backers. Produced by London-based Studiocanal production company Urban Myth Films (“War of the Worlds”), Studiocanal and Millennium and Butler’s G-Base,...

After a prolonged legal battle spanning more than two years, Gerard Butler and the producers of the “Olympus Has Fallen” franchise reached a settlement regarding the actor’s $10 million lawsuit on Thursday. The suit sought a share of profits generated by the 2013 White House action franchise.

Les Weldon is a name you’ve likely seen in the credits of most big action movies from the last decade or so. Working with Millennium Media, he’s produced The Hitman’s Bodyguard series, London Has Fallen, Angel Has Fallen and all four Expendables movies. With the latter now in theatres, we sat down with Les Weldon to discuss the latest film, the future of action, and the passing of the torch from one generation to another.
On Stallone’s lack of screen time in Expend4bles:
Look, it wasn’t so much that we said, oh, we got to pass the torch here, because, you know, we were thinking what is a good story for here? And we say passing of the torch, but that doesn’t mean, you know, that that’s forever the direction we’re going. It just happened to be the best story we had...

It would appear that the King of Modern Trash Cinema™ is on his way to becoming the King of Modern Trash Shared Universes: Deadline is reporting that Gerard Butler's "Has Fallen" franchise is headed to the small screen, even as a fourth movie centered on Butler's Secret Service Agent Mike Banning continues to move forward.
The Scottish thespian and "300" actor -- whose many, many B-movie credits include "Law Abiding Citizen," "Den of Thieves," and this year's marvelously-titled "Plane" -- made his debut as Banning in Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen." Gerard Butler can be seen in the new action thriller Plane with Mike Colter, and IndieWire reports on the Scotsman’s attraction to old-fashioned, mid-budget, non-franchise action films. While not making Marvel-level properties, or even Fast & Furious-level, Gerard Butler is a lower-key action star who has been consistently putting out audience-pleasing thrill rides. Butler revealed that Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., emailed the 300 star and begged him for more Olympus Has Fallen films.
“Robert Downey Jr. wrote me the nicest email after Olympus Has Fallen. This is the same vibe. He’s like, ‘We need more of these movies.’ These are the movies when I was in New York as a kid, and people would shout at the screen and throw things and be like, ‘No!’ and applaud and cheer. And I think that’s what this movie is, it’s a throwback to that, where literally...

Robert Downey Jr. is apparently a big fan of “Olympus Has Fallen,” the Antoine Fuqua-directed 2013 action movie starring Gerard Butler as a secret service agent who fights terrorists in the White House and saves the president, played by Aaron Eckhart. The film, also starring Morgan Freeman, grossed 170 million worldwide and launched a franchise for Butler with 2016’s “London Has Fallen” and 2018’s “Angel Has Fallen.” While the “Has Fallen” franchise is a far cry from Downey Jr.’s action-driven Marvel movies, the actor apparently loves them so much that he personally contacted Butler.
“Robert Downey Jr. wrote me the nicest email after ‘Olympus Has Fallen,’” Butler recently told Uproxx. “He’s like, ‘We need more of these movies.’ These are the movies, when I was in New York as a kid, and people would shout at the screen and throw things and be like, ‘No!,’ and applaud and cheer…...

Robert Downey Jr. is convinced the future of cinema lies with Gerard Butler.
“Plane” actor Butler revealed that MCU alum Downey reached out after the success of 2013 film “Olympus Has Fallen.” The action-thriller, directed by Antoine Fuqua, starred Butler as a former Secret Service officer who fights terrorists occupying the White House and threatening to kill the president, played by Aaron Eckhart. Angela Bassett and Morgan Freeman additionally star.
Butler also produced the film, which spurred sequels “London Has Fallen” (2016) and “Angel Has Fallen” (2019).

The second season of Gangs of London, the super-violent crime series originally created by The Raid writer/director Gareth Evans and produced by Pulse Films and Sister, has arrived on AMC+, grabbing the entrails of the first outing in 2021 and managing to up the eye-watering carnage — and body count — some more.

Exclusive: Christian Gudegast (Den of Thieves) has closed a deal to direct the thriller Crown Vic for MadRiver Pictures.
Crown Vic is described as a too-insane-to-be-true crime story set in the early 1980s San Fernando Valley — a world where L.A. cops, mythologized by TV shows from Dragnet to CHiPs, were rock stars who operated with unchecked power. Its protagonists are Richard Ford and Robert Von Villas, two Vietnam War heroes turned superstar LAPD cops, who parlayed their positions to get rich, while cozying up to Hollywood’s biggest TV stars. The duo went on to build an underground criminal operation as thieves, gun runners and murderers for hire, until their unwilling business partner risked everything to bring them down.

Brutal British crime drama Gangs of London is back for a second series on Sky Atlantic and Now, with a release date of 20th October in the UK and 17th November in the US, and it’s looking as dark and gritty as ever.
When the explosive first series launched in April 2020, this story of the turbulent power struggles of London’s criminal underworld – centring on the Wallace family and various other international gangs – was an instant hit, at the time becoming Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch behind Chernobyl. As dramas go it’s a thrilling powerhouse of a series, full of epic fight scenes and twisty narrative, and certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted gore-wise.
Now it’s back for a second series, fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing their unanswered questions resolved, as well as being introduced to new players in this savage power game.

The Mezzotint is the latest instalment of the BBC’s A Ghost Story for Christmas. The original series from 1971 to 1978 is justifiably considered a highlight of televised horror and its influence on later works is covered extensively in Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror. Since then, there have been sporadic attempts to revive the tradition, most recently by writer/director Mark Gatiss who has delivered seasonal shudders in 2013, 2018 and 2019, as well as this year.
Edward Williams is the curator of the Cambridge University Museum. He receives a mezzotint from a London art dealer as a potential addition to the Museum’s collection. He’s not impressed, deeming it a very ordinary picture of an estate house. But he becomes interested when a friend points out some features he somehow failed to notice,...

Gerard Butler filed a lawsuit on Friday against production company Nu Image/Millennium Films, charging that he is owed at least $10 million in backend compensation for the 2013 film “Olympus Has Fallen.”
Butler’s suit comes on the heels of another high profile legal battle between a star and a producer over compensation. On Thursday, Scarlett Johannson filed suit against Disney, citing the simultaneous release of “Black Widow’ on Disney+ and in theaters. The breach of contract lawsuit charged that Disney “intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”
Butler’s representatives, as well as Nu Image/Millennium Films, did not immediately respond to a request from TheWrap for comment.

Gerard Butler filed a lawsuit on Friday alleging he is owed at least $10 million in backend compensation for the 2013 action film “Olympus Has Fallen.”
Butler sued Nu Image/Millennium Films, claiming that the producer had understated domestic and foreign receipts by tens of millions of dollars and had failed to report $8 million that went to its own executives.
The lawsuit comes a day after Scarlett Johansson filed a blockbuster compensation lawsuit against the Walt Disney Co., claiming that the simultaneous release of “Black Widow” on Disney Plus cut into her box office participation.
Butler’s suit is a more traditional “Hollywood accounting” case. Butler starred as Mike Banning, a Secret Service agent who has to rescue the president from hostage-takers.
The film grossed $170 million worldwide, and spawned two successful sequels, “London Has Fallen” and “Angel Has Fallen,” in which Butler reprised the role.

Exclusive: In the biggest deal to go down at this year’s Cannes virtual market, STX has beaten out a number of rival bids for worldwide rights to the Gerard Butler action sequel Greenland: Migration.
STX is stumping up around $25 million for domestic rights in a deal cut with Euro producer-seller Anton and CAA Media Finance. Multiple streamers were in the hunt for the movie. STX will also take all of international from Anton in a pact that values foreign at around $50 million.
Anton took the project to the virtual market where it garnered significant interest from indie buyers, but — as often happens on successful franchise fare — STX, which distributed the original movie, had a matching option and was happy to take the plunge. The movie will now run through the studio’s foreign output partners and is being sold to buyers in other markets.
The $65M-plus budgeted movie will...

Gerard Butler is returning to Greenland. The Scottish actor is set to reprise his role as John Garrity in Greenland: Migration, a sequel to action thriller Greenland. The core filmmaking team will return with director Ric Roman Waugh headlining from a script by Greenland writer Chris Sparling. Butler’s co-star Morena Baccarin will also reprise her role as Allison Garrity.
In a continuation of the story, the Garrity family, who survive a near-extinction level event when an interstellar comet hits the earth, must leave the safety of the Greenland bunker and embark on a perilous journey across the decimated frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
Project, which is slated to shoot in 2022, is produced by Thunder Road Pictures’ Basil Iwanyk and Brendon Boyea, G-base’s Gerard Butler and Alan Siegel and Anton’s Sebastien Raybaud and John Zois. Anton is fully financing the film and controlling all rights.

Director Robert Connolly (“Balibo”) and star Eric Bana, both currently riding high at the Australian box office with “The Dry,” will reunite on “Blueback,” a film billed as a family-friendly, ecologically activist celebration of the natural world.
Connolly has been developing the project for more than two decades. At one stage it was envisaged that actor-director Rowan Woods (“The Boys”) would direct the adaptation.
The film is now moving into production with filming set in two of the remotest places on the continent: Bremer Bay and Ningaloo Reef, in West Australia. Roadshow Films will release the picture in Australia and New Zealand, and the U.K.’s HanWay Films will handle rights sales in all other territories.
The film is adapted by Connolly from Booker Prize nominee Tim Winton’s critically acclaimed novella of the same name. The story focuses on a girl who befriends a wild blue groper while diving.

Hong Kong-produced “Caught in Time” gave fresh life to the mainland China box office over its opening weekend.
The fantasy crime thriller about a cop chasing a gang through different eras earned $30.3 million. Produced by Emperor Motion Picture, the film stars the popular Daniel Wu and Wang Qianyuan, and was directed by Lau Ho-leung.
It edged aside patriotic war film “Sacrifice” which had held the top spot for the previous three weekends. “Sacrifice” managed $6.0 million in its fourth weekend, for a cumulative score of $161 million, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Third place, and a $3.3 million haul, belonged to “Paw Patrol” in its second weekend. That compared with $5.5 million in its opening frame, and extended the film’s 11-day cumulative to $9.6 million.
Disaster action movie “Greenland” opened modestly with $3.2 million for fourth place, despite the presence of Gerard Butler above the title. His previous releases of “Geostorm” and “London Has Fallen...
