Despite staring down a two-plus-year pandemic, the very real possibility of Wwiii, and the Great State of Texas’s bullshit attempts to roll back the rights of women and the LGBTQ community to the dark ages, Rolling Stone has made it to South by Southwest.
And we’re damn glad to be here.
After the past two editions were scrapped or moved online due to the Covid-19 health crisis, the very fact that SXSW 2022 — and specifically its music-festival component — is happening in Austin, in clubs, and in person is reason to celebrate.

Well, that Nintendo Direct sure did feature some unexpected announcements. Despite the fact that many of the surprises leaked on an internet forum ahead of the actual broadcast, such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Mario Golf: Super Rush reveals, the beloved publisher still managed to keep a few things under wraps, such as the big Super Smash Bros. Ultimate moment that opened the show.
That’s right, we finally know who’s joining Nintendo’s brawler next and it’s none other than Pyra and Mythra! If you’re a Xenoblade fan, you’re probably very excited to see the legendary Aegis blade from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 show up in Smash, although the fact that she isn’t accompanied by Rex may disappoint. Instead, Nintendo is pairing Pyra with Mythra, which does make sense in terms of the lore of the game, since the former is actually...

National Geographic has set a new special called “Bin Laden’s Hard Drive” for September promising an in-depth analysis of Al-Qaeda co-founder Osama bin Laden’s declassified personal files.
Premiering Thursday, Sept. 10 at 9/8c, the one-hour special features CNN National Security Analyst Peter Bergen leading a team of experts as they do a deep dive into hard drive files recovered from the Abbottabad compound in Pakistan where the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was killed by U.S. Special Forces in 2011.
The experts include CIA profilers, criminal psychologists, religious scholars, military experts, and men who personally knew Bin Laden. With Bergen at the helm, they will analyze 470,000 digital files; 250 gigabytes of data; more than 100 Usb drives, DVDs and CDs; five computers and multiple cell phones containing personal letters and home videos for a deeper understanding of Bin Laden’s relationship to family and his views of faith and religion, and his “legacy of violence and destruction,...

Cinema is often at the forefront of introducing new technology to the masses.
The rise of vaping and the use of e-cigarettes on the big and small screen has been gaining ground over the last decade or so. Johnny Depp’s turn in the 2010 film The Tourist featured the star using a vape, one of the earliest to do so on screen. John Cusack is often seen using the device in the maligned but fun Drive Hard, as well as continuing the trend in David Cronenberg’s Map to the Stars. As the ubiquity of vaping increases we’re sure to see more of this on the big screen, bringing with it a thriving subculture much as the films of the 40s, 50s and 60s almost always showed smoking as a visual cue to suggest a certain attitude and mystique. It also gave them something to do with their hands…...

The stars of yesterday now are making three films a year you never knew existed until they show up on Netflix.^ Real Movie ^
In my prior life as a script reader, I certainly read a lot of bad scripts, but at times, an even more common occurrence was a script that seemed to do a great many things right, but somehow fell just short of being something you wanted to champion as a movie. As draining as the terrible scripts were, there’s something pure about clear-cut bad. It takes little effort to explain why they’re unfit.
The real challenges were the scripts that had kind of a decent premise, kind of an okay twist or two, and a lead character who wasn’t bad so much as he or she was just… there. The raw materials are there for what Could be a script. They just happen to be assembled in the least compelling way...

John Cusack has made 17 films in four years. We've found the ones that have gone all-but straight to DVD and watched them...
John Cusack is a bit of a Hollywood oddity. There’s no pattern to the type of movie he will choose to do, so he’s always kept us on our toes. Sure, he’ll make a dumb action movie, but that will often afford him the chance to make a few smaller gambles later on. Up until the last few years he’s played the system very well, but recently his ethic appears to have, um, waned? A little?
Since the heady days of Say Anything and Sixteen Candles he’s come to represent a sort of slightly weird-looking, awkwardly charming, offbeat everyman that men aged 18-49 can look at and go 'me'” - which is fine. There’s a place for that, as...

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the elevator pitch on this one. It’s like Jaws, right? But, it’s in the forest – with a giant bear, guys with guns, and a token ballsy blonde to keep the ladies happy. Sure, it sounds like Into The Grizzly Maze basically writes itself, but the most cursory of looks at the newly released trailer suggests that this might actually have a very healthy B-movie pulse to it. What else could account for the presence of the legendary Scott Glenn, and Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton?

Oh, did you have dreams of going to Hollywood, becoming a star, and living happily ever after? Maps to the Stars will put paid to them. This is one of Canadian horror auteur David Cronenberg’s (Cosmopolis, Eastern Promises) least trippy films: it’s hardly surreal at all. Which makes it all too plausible as it looks askew at the living nightmares that are the lives of the Weiss family of Los Angeles, all of whom are deeply entrenched in the industry. In what is actual news from Buckingham Palace and not a high-concept pitch for Adam Sandler's latest film, the Royal Household needs a new chauffeur for Queen Elizabeth. The approximately $37,000-per-year gig entails driving around Her Majesty, other members of the Royal Family, household officials and guests, as well as maintaining the Royal Vehicles (which includes the Queen's two 2002 Bentleys and fleet of both Land and Range Rovers) and planning the Royal Driving Route. Qualifications include "strong attention to detail," the ability to "remain calm under pressure," "professional driving experience" and of course a valid U.K. driving license.

“Hot Tub Time Machine 2” should have been both a flop and a disaster, but it ended up being neither. Based on a simple conceit spelled out in the title, and with a very no-stars-lead cast, “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” should have been as throw away as it sounds, but Steve Pink's movie turned out to be quite the endearing, funny and bawdy little comedy. For the sequel, thespian John Cusack has not returned, perhaps too busy starring in recent classics like “Drive Hard,” “The Bag Man,” “The Prince” and “Reclaim.” But the original cast of Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke and Chevy Chase, are back this time joined by Adam Scott, Gillian Jacob, Thomas Lennon, Christian Slater, Collette Wolfe and “Mad Men” star Jessica Paré who, how shall we put it, elevated her game in the original. Here’s the all-important synopsis: When Lou (Rob Corddry) finds himself in trouble,...

While 50% of the films he makes are legitimately great (Looper and Moonrise Kingdom), the other half go straight to video and die. This latest project is a reminder that along with half-baked horror, the death knell of January is filled to the brim with bad actioners seeking a home.
With a decent cast in Willis and Thomas Jane, Vice might have been able to salvage something worth watching out of this mess, but there is no effort on the screen at all. Netflix streaming is upping the ante this December, adding enough high-profile TV shows and movies to more than make up for last month's lackluster offerings.
On the movie side, highlights include Will Ferrell and gang in "Anchorman 2," the Heath Ledger-starring "A Knight's Tale," Cameron Crowe classic "Almost Famous," Oscar-winning "American Beauty," and horror hits "Oculus" and "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones." Oh, and let's not forget '80s classic "Troop Beverly Hills," '90s cult favorite "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion," or Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
And there's plenty to love about what's coming on the TV front: "American Horror Story: Coven" finally gets its day on Netflix, "Sharknado 2" storms its way to streaming, and Brit hit "Broadchurch" finally lands stateside. Oh, and December sees the premiere of the hotly anticipated Netflix Original series "Marco Polo" on the 12th.

In the newly released poster for Insurgent, we see a brave, stoic Shailene Woodley standing on top of a cube-shaped building which is on fire. It's also floating in mid-air through the middle of a post-apocalyptic cityscape, but that's beside the point.
.
While admittedly the poster is a bit surreal and a tad confusing (although, a lot is explained by Insurgent's teaser trailer… sort of), what really seems to set the tone is the blazing inferno raging beneath Woodley's feet, pouring out of the windows.
It's almost as if the poster designers were worried that the strange image of a warrior woman on a floating building wouldn't be eye-catching enough. However, like sex and the color red, fire is used all the time by poster designers for a whole multitude of reasons – and with an equally large variety of insane results.

Drive Hard is a straight-to-video action/comedy, starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane. I didn’t expect much from it, but as it turns out, it was actually quite entertaining. I’m not saying that this is some sort of Triple-a title. It’s very much what you think it is, with both lead actors teetering somewhere between playing themselves, and phoning it in for a paycheck, but it’s funny enough that if you see it somewhere on the cheap, there are worse home video purchases you could make. The story follows Peter, a former Nascar racer, who has settled down with a wife and child in Australian suburban hell. Peter gives driving lessons for a career now, so when Simon(Cusack) shows up, he assumes that will be the extent of his day. As it turns out, Simon knows very well who Peter is, and has picked him for a reason.

Australians, more than anyone, know about car chases. As Quentin Tarantino joked in "Not Quite Hollywood," the terrific documentary on Australian genre cinema, there could be an Australian movie about young girls coming of age and it would probably have a totally kick-ass car chase. The almost cultural responsibility for truly outstanding car chases (as evidenced in everything from "Mad Max" to this year's "Wolf Creek 2") makes "Drive Hard," a dopey, Aussie-set action comedy that stars, for reasons that are never sufficiently articulated, Thomas Jane and John Cusack, even more of a crushing disappointment. This one is all out of gas. In "Drive Hard," Jane plays Peter Roberts, a former racecar driver who, after knocking up his girlfriend, decides to get married and settle down (in Australia, of course). His glory days of spills, chills, and finishing line champagne showers are behind him. Now he teaches driving lessons in a.

I’m actually astonished that it has taken this long for someone to come up with a movie entitled Drive Hard. So perhaps it’s fitting, then, that this deeply terrible would-be action comedy looks (with its cheap FX and bad editing), sounds (with its cheesy, overbearing score), and feels (with its dumb story and slumming movie stars) like an 80s made-for-cable movie. Former race car driver Thomas Jane (The Mist), now working as a driving school instructor, is kidnapped by generic bad guy John Cusack (Grand Piano) to drive him around Australia’s Gold Coast region while he engages in some generic bad-guy business (pissing off other,...

First there was The Driver, then there was Drive Angry, and then there was Drive. Now there’s Drive Hard — because why not? Thomas Jane plays former race-car driver Peter Roberts, now a married dad who runs a not-so-successful driving-instruction school in Gold Coast, Queensland. His crisp, business-y, chief-breadwinner wife does nothing but nag him, and he’s way behind on his daughter’s private-school tuition.
But his life, or maybe just his week, is changed when a twitchy weirdo in a black baseball cap shows up for a lesson: Simon Keller (John Cusack) is an American who just wants to learn how to drive on the other side of the road. Or so he says. Keller knows Roberts is a guy who can put the pedal to the metal, and so withi...

John Cusack has been churning out Hollywood films for over three decades, but these days the actor is frustrated by the state of the industry. “You can't make it up,” Cusack told The Guardian in an interview published Thursday. “It's a whorehouse and people go mad.” See video: John Cusack, Thomas Jane ‘Drive Hard’ in Action Comedy Trailer The 48-year-old actor co-stars with “Twilight” lead Robert Pattinson in “Maps to the Stars,” a 2014 David Cronenberg drama that skewers a celebrity-obsessed Hollywood. Cusack lauded Pattinson for how the young actor has handled his oft-publicized career, claiming today's industry is more difficult for younger actors to.

It’s difficult not to like John Cusack. Sure, the guy has not made the best cinematic choices over the past few years, but I do not think it’s for want of trying. Cusack still manages to bring an easy-going charm to the screen, regardless of whether he’s playing a hero or a villain; and boy, he’s been playing a lot of villains recently. In a new clip from his most recent role in Drive Hard, Cusack reminds us that even as a villain, he can still be very amusing on screen.
Drive Hard features the actor in the part of a criminal who gently persuades a former race car driver turned driving instructor (Thomas Jane) to drive the getaway car in a $9 million heist job. When Jane initially refuses, as we knew he would, Cusack explains that he’s going to shoot him…and then proceeds to do just that.

Today we have an exclusive clip to highlight the film's easy vibe. The film revolves around a former racecar driver shifting gears to a 9 to 5 job as a beginners’ driving instructor. But he soon gets into some unexpected high speed hijinks when he's kidnapped and compelled to be the getaway driver in a $9 million heist. There’s only one director who can claim to have introduced the world to Nicole Kidman (in 1983’s BMX Bandits) and directed two Leprechaun films (1995’s Leprechaun 3 and 1997’s Leprechaun 4: In Space). That director’s name? Brian Trenchard-Smith.

Brian Trenchard-Smith has, by his own estimation, directed "42 crimes against cinema"... which brings us to his latest filmmaking infraction, Drive Hard starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.
From Rlj/Image Entertainment, Drive Hard will be available via VOD this week on September 4 and in theaters and on iTunes on October 3.
The action/adventure film was written by Brian along with Chad Law, Evan Law and Brigitte Jean Allen. Here's a synopsis:
With a heist in mind, a mysterious American called Keller (Cusack) arrives in Brisbane needing a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the local underworld, he tricks a driving school instructor, Roberts (Jane) into taking the wheel.
Keller chose well, Roberts just happens to be a washed out Formula-One driver. Chased by the cops and the mob, Roberts is forced to use his racing skills to evade pursuit on a Hard Drive that takes the two along the Gold Coast of Australia.

Apparently John Cusack is trying to corner the market on moderately budgeted/essentially straight-to-vod action movies. I’m honestly not sure when this started, but man, I’m seeing Cusack in a ton of these films. His latest is “Drive Hard” from director Brian Trenchard-Smith, which has Cusack on better form than most of the films I’ve seen him in lately. At least here he seems to be having some fun. The flick co-stars the Punisher himself Thomas Jane, though here looking very un-Punisher like. I’m also not entirely sure what I think about the ’80s vibe. What is this, a throwback action movie? Nicolas Cage and John Cusack have been less than discerning with their film gigs in recent years, picking a lot of modestly budgeted thrillers that get poor reviews and barely go theatrical. How many remember the likes of "The Bag Man," "Drive Hard," "The Frozen Ground," "The Factory," "Seeking Justice," "Stolen," "Trespass," "Rage," or "The Numbers Station"?
Today comes trailers for two more. First up is "Left Behind," the film version of the popular book series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins which deals with what would happen if the Christian Rapture and Apocalypse took place today. The focus here though isn't on wider society, but rather a family lead by Cage's pilot character.
The second is for Cusack's "Reclaim" which co-stars Ryan Phillippe, Rachelle Lefevre, Jacki Weaver and Luis Guzman. That follows an American couple who travel to Puerto Rico to finalize an adoption, only to learn it was a scam.

While Nicolas Cage tends to get the brunt of criticism/derision for jobs likely accepted based on how many zeros appear on his paycheck, let's pour one out for John Cusack. He has been sliding into a comfortable groove of forgettable movies ("Drive Hard," "The Prince"), and so it goes with "Reclaim," which you probably didn't know existed. Well, it does. Co-starring Ryan Phillippe, Rachelle Lefevre, Jacki Weaver and Luis Guzman, the story follows an American couple who travel to Puerto Rico to finalize an adoption and pick up their seven year-old adoptee, only to they realize that (all together now, class!) things aren't what they seem. There's some sort of scam, Phillippe looks desperate, Guzman glowers, and websites can't be found on iPads. Oh no! And oh yeah, Cusack hangs around, wearing a windbreaker and ballcap and looks sleazy. As for the Playlist? We wonder how the cast was...

The short answer is no, and there isn’t a longer one. But let a man dream why don’t you? It’s been a while since John Cusack was a box-office draw, and it’s been just as long since he’s worn any color other than black. Coincidence? Probably not. His last lead role in a wide release was in 2012′s The Raven, and since then he’s starred in nine other films. Can you name more than one or two of them? Probably not. The same can be said to an albeit lesser degree for the careers of both Thomas Jane and writer/director Brian Trenchard-Smith. Jane’s leading man status of the mid ’00s has devolved into supporting roles in indies, while Trenchard-Smith has kept busy with TV and Dtv titles since his early ’80s one-two-three punch of Stunt Rock, Escape 2000, and BMX Bandits. All three deserve a chance to get back...
