We are what we eat, alas. And we’ve come to reap the tainted rewards of the poisoned earth. Such is a pronounced theme in Honeydew, the low-key but overtly grotesque debut from Devereaux Millburn. A goofy freakshow a la David Lynch meets We Are What We Are, the film’s strident sense of tone and fated misfortune for its two privileged protagonists stumbles over the chopping block of an over-the-top finale.
Collapsing so many inspirations together, Millburn feels like he’s furiously churned himself into a particular niche of derivative pastiche.…...

The San Sebastian audience became the first in the world to see all eight episodes of Luca Guadagnino’s HBO and Sky Italy’s eight-part series “We Are Who We Are.”
The second episode of the series aired on HBO in America this week. The media had only received the first four episodes to review in advance. Thus, it was at San Sebastian Film Festival, where Guadagnino is president of the competition jury, that the acclaimed director fully unveiled what he calls “my new movie” to the world.
At a press conference in San Sebastian, Luca Guadagnino revealed that he sees “We Are Who We Are” as a film rather than a series, that he used digital technology to give the story a contemporary aesthetic and the show is an American “Paradise Lost,” signaled by the election of President Trump. He also weighed in on the new Academy Award qualification rules.

As the global film industry faced dire circumstances in recent months, Mexican filmmakers contended with a more specific threat. In early April, the country’s president attempted to eliminate critical funding that has supported generations of acclaimed Mexican filmmakers. The pushback culminated in a dramatic confrontation, with filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro G. Iñarritu, and Alfonso Cuarón taking a stand to salvage these resources. Their successful efforts — for now, at least — cast light on a community reliant on national support.
Mexico’s film industry has seen astounding growth over the last two decades, in quantity and quality. The defining catalyst remains the creation of two government funds, Forprocine and Fidecine, in the late ‘90s. Rlje Films and the horror streaming service Shudder have teamed up to acquire the North American rights to “The Pale Door” a horror Western from the famed horror magazine Fangoria and Paper Street Pictures, it was announced Thursday.
“The Pale Door” is directed by Aaron B. Koontz and is the latest hybrid of the horror and Western genres after Fangoria CEO Dallas Sonnier saw success as a producer on the 2015 Kurt Russell movie “Bone Tomahawk.”
Rlje Films hopes to release the film theatrically and on VOD and digital HD in August 2020, and “The Pale Door” will then premiere on Shudder at a later date.

The “Call Me By Your Name” film sequel is still kicking around with director Luca Guadagnino, it’s just going to take a bit longer to develop since the filmmaker is quarantined in Milan, Italy for the foreseeable future. The director recently told the Italian publication Gay.it (via The Playlist) that he was set to come to America for an important meeting with a potential screenwriter for the sequel before Italy went on lockdown.
“I was going to America to meet a writer I love very much, whose name I don’t want to mention, to talk about the second part,” Guadagnino said. “Unfortunately, everything is canceled. Of course, it’s a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stulhbarg, Esther Garrel, and the other actors. They will all be there in the new film.”

Sales agent Media Luna New Films has acquired international rights to Rodrigo Bellott’s horror thriller “Blood-Red Ox.”
Bellott directed Bolivia’s Academy Award entries “Sexual Dependency” and “Tu Me Manques,” and was the producer behind Jim Mickle’s U.S. remake of Mexican horror hit “We Are What We Are.”
In “Blood-Red Ox,” which is in post-production, a Lebanese-American journalist and his boyfriend travel to Bolivia where the trip takes a bizarre turn as one of them starts having strange visions and loses his mind over the presence of a giant blood-red ox. While trying to save his boyfriend from paranoia, the other one realizes nothing and nobody is to be trusted as he might be losing his mind too.

Remakes have been a part of the studio machine since at least as far back as 1904 when the groundbreaking “The Great Train Robbery” was reshot and resold. In the century-plus that followed, remakes have gotten a bad name for themselves and, to some, are indicative of the creative vacancy of the mainstream entertainment industry. But look closer and you’ll find that many filmmakers are doing wonderful things by taking old stories and making them new again, either by adding visual flair or injecting nuance where, perhaps, there was little to be found before. After a ten-year hiatus where he produced the films of other directors in the U.S. and Latin America, Rodrigo Bellott returned to directing with gay drama “Tu Me Manques,” which trumped other local contenders to represent Bolivia at the Academy Awards and Spain’s Goyas.
He confesses that the experience nearly broke him. “It was a very personal drama that took over eight weeks of production, 56 actors and 18 months to edit,” he said. It was such a painful experience, he thought he’d never direct again.
Advised to take a break, Bellott instead pulled a Wong Kar Wai, who while shooting “Ashes of Time,” allegedly took two weeks off to make “Chungking Express” before restarting his dramedy.

Julia Garner has signed a first-look deal with Mrc Television, the studio behind “Ozark” and “House of Cards.”
Under the deal, the actress, who plays Ruth Langmore on “Ozark,” which won her an Emmy last month for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, will develop and executive produce television projects.
“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Mrc on Ozark where they have offered me a rich playground of material as an actress,” Garner said. “I’ve now been afforded an opportunity with Mrc to build on a rewarding and collaborative experience and I look forward to establishing a creative partnership in the future.”

Bolivia’s selection committee has opted to submit Rodrigo Bellott’s polemical “Tu Me Manques” to vie for the International Feature Film Academy Award.
The gay drama beat 11 other local films in contention. “By supporting my film despite the controversy, Bolivia has proven that it is a progressive country, and that in the end, art and cinema will prevail,” said Bellott, who has seen his fourth film greeted by both glowing reviews and homophobic slurs since it bowed in August.
This is the second time Bellott represents Bolivia at the Oscars. His breakout film, “Sexual Dependency,” which snagged the Fipresci Award in Locarno and screened at more than 65 international film fests, also became the country’s second official entry to the Academy Awards in 2003, after an eight-year absence following Juan Carlos Valdivia’s “Jonas and the Pink Whale.”

“While our primary focus is genre and thriller, we are drawn to stories of conflicted humanity that force viewers to question how they would react when faced with real or existential threats,” said James. “These stories are often grounded in truth – literal or allegorical – encouraging us to confront and challenge the assumptions we make about ourselves and the world around us.”

Oscar-nominated “Call Me By Your Name” and “Suspiria” director Luca Guadagnino is in negotiations to direct a new adaptation of William Golding’s classic coming-of-age novel for Warner Bros. According to Variety, Warners has been trying to mount the project since reacquiring the rights in 2017.

Luca Guadagnino is quickly becoming one of the film world’s most exciting (and unpredictable) filmmakers. Now, it seems the director of “Suspiria” and “Call Me By Your Name” is looking to bring his work to television for a change. Observer is reporting that Guadagnino is working on an eight-episode series, directing the first two episodes (at least) and writing scripts with a pair of co-writers. The series has the tentative title “We Are Who We Are” (not to be confused with Jim Mickle’s 2013 English-language remake “We Are What We Are”). Set in Italy, “We Are Who We Are” reportedly centers on Fraser and Caitlin, a pair of teenagers discovering themselves while living on a military base.

Mexican exhibition juggernaut Cinepolis has picked up all Latin American rights to the Mexican version of the 2011 Colombian suspense thriller, “The Hidden Face” (“La Cara Oculta”).
This is the first Mexican feature of Colombian shingle Dynamo, which made the original with co-producers Fox Int’l Productions, Cactus Flower and Avalon. Dynamo’s Andi Baiz directed.
Argentina’s Fb Group and Mexico’s Urujuru are co-producers of the Mexican remake.
“Dynamo is a company that we deeply admire,” said Leonardo Cordero, head of Cinepolis Distribution. “To be able to distribute its “La Cara Oculta” remake is a major opportunity to develop a long-term relationship with one of Latin America’s top content providers,” he said.
Plans are to release the thriller by the first semester of next year. Its definitive title is yet to be determined.
