Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

After a decade and change playing superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox, Robert Downey Jr. wants to remind everyone there's more to him than Tony Stark. In the years since permanently (?) retiring his MCU alter ego in "Avengers: Endgame," the actor has lined up an ambitious slate of projects. Between getting an Oscar for his supporting role in Christopher Nolan's Best Picture-winning "Oppenheimer" and pulling a Peter Sellers by tackling multiple colorful characters in Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar's "The Sympathizer" miniseries, it's fair to say Rdj the character actor is officially back.
As chance would have it, we're now 10 years removed from the last time Downey tried (but failed) to renew his acting bonafides with "The Judge." Directed by David Dobkin, the 2014 drama stars Downey as Hank Palmer, a big-shot lawyer from Chicago who returns to his podunk hometown in Indiana to attend his mother's funeral.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor are Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”). Our odds currently show Downey (3/1) triumphing, followed in order of likelihood by Gosling (39/10), Ruffalo (9/2), De Niro (9/2), and Brown (9/2).
At 80, De Niro ranks as the ninth oldest nominee in the history of this category, which was established just six years before he was born. Less than eight years separate him from record holder Christopher Plummer, whose victory at 82 for “Beginners” (2012) would put him solely ahead of De Niro on the winners list. As it happens, De Niro already sits in sixth place among the youngest supporting male champs, having triumphed at 31 on his very first bid for “The Godfather Part II” (1975).

When it comes to lone acting Oscar nominations, the category with the fewest examples is Best Supporting Actor. After two consecutive years of there being no new additions to that subgroup, Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) became its 54th member in 2023 after having been largely ignored by other awards bodies over the preceding weeks. He directly followed Tom Hanks, who is the only other entrant from the last five years.
Within the last decade, this club has only grown by seven, with those who preceded Hanks and Henry being Robert Duvall, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, and Christopher Plummer. 2018 marked the fifth instance of two men accomplishing the feat at once, thus tying the category’s record for most bids of this kind in a single year. Contextually, the corresponding Best Supporting Actress record is three, while that of both lead categories is four.

Oscar-winner Robert Duvall has starred in dozens of films spanning a 60+ year career, racking up six additional nominations in the process, but how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Duvall made his big screen debut with the small but memorable role of Boo Radley in “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1962), released when he was 31-years-old. His first Oscar nomination came just 10 years later: Best Supporting Actor for Francis Ford Coppola‘s mob classic “The Godfather” (1972).
It would take 11 years before Duvall finally clinched that elusive Best Actor Oscar for “Tender Mercies” (1983), a small-scale drama about a drunken country-western singer working towards redemption. He would compete five additional times: lead for “The Great Santini” (1980) and “The Apostle” (1997); supporting for “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “A Civil Action” (1998), and “The Judge” (2014).

“Poor Things” looks set to be a major Oscar contender this year. It just won the Golden Lion at Venice and Emma Stone just took over the top spot on our Best Actress Oscar odds chart. Supporting players Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo look set to match an Academy Award record.
“Poor Things” tell the tale of Stone as a young woman brought back to life by a scientist in the Victorian era. Dafoe plays the eccentric scientist, complete with a peculiar Scottish accent and killer prosthetic makeup design, while Ruffalo hams it up as the scientist’s lawyer, donning a hilarious English accent and turning up the camp to 10. Both performances are now being touted as strong Oscar contenders in the Best Supporting Actor category, which could see Dafoe and Ruffalo earn their fifth and fourth nominations respectively.
Dafoe was first nominated in 1987 for Best Supporting Actor for “Platoon.

What’s particularly interesting about this project for horror fans is that Edgar Allan Poe is a central character in the story, and we recently learned that Harry Potter actor Harry Melling has been cast in the role of Poe. Melling, who recently appeared on “The Queen’s Gambit,” is perhaps best known for playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter film franchise.

Decades after revolutionizing how we see Asian American women on screen, "The Joy Luck Club" will be meeting up once again. Deadline reports that the 1993 film, originally directed by Wayne Wang, will be getting a sequel that is sure to continue the themes of intergenerational struggles portrayed in the original. Amy Tan, who wrote the original 1989 novel, and Ron Bass will both return as screenwriters. Hyde Park Entertainment Group, headed up by Ashok Amritraj, will handle the majority of producing duties on the project.
"We are excited to be teaming with Hyde Park and ["The Judge" producer] Jeff Kleeman in bringing to life the next generation of these four families so close to our hearts," the duo wrote in a statement provided to Deadline.
Not much is known about the film's story, but what we do know is that it will be a true legacy sequel in every sense of the term.

Fox bosses have defended the casting of Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump’s former lawyer who helped spread baseless lies that the 2020 Presidential election was stolen, on The Masked Singer.
Rob Wade, President, Alternative Entertainment and Specials, Fox Entertainment, said he had “absolutely no regrets” on the move.
“The Masked Singer is all about delivering jaw-dropping moments, which is exactly what [we] accomplished whether it was on set or with the viewers at home,” he added.
Wade joked about Deadline’s scoop on the casting. “My only regret or surprise was obviously that the reveal was spoiled but kudos to [Deadline], please just don’t do it again.
The former Mayor of New York was unmasked on the reality singing competition on April 20, months after Deadline revealed that his casting had already caused consternation among some of the show’s judging panel – particularly Ken Jeong, who immediately crossed his arms and walked off the stage.

Laika, the animation house known for Oscar-nominated films from “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” to “The Boxtrolls” and “Kubo and the Two Strings,” has announced its seventh feature. Titled “The Night Gardener,” the project is based on an original screenplay by “Ozark” co-creator Bill Dubuque and will be directed by Travis Knight, Laika’s CEO and president. Knight previously directed “Kubo and the Two Strings” as well as Paramount’s live-action “Bumblebee.”
Laika pitches the film as a “gritty neo-noir folktale centered on a young man in rural Missouri fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy. The film will paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge.”
“’The Night Gardener’ is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart,” Knight said. “Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas,...

Rudy Giuliani was finally unmasked on The Masked Singer.
“It surprises us all that you’re here on The Masked Singer,” host Nick Cannon said as Donald Trump’s former lawyer was revealed as Jack in the Box during Wednesday’s episode.
“This is definitely something I never would have guessed,” added judge Robin Thicke.
There has been much controversy surrounding Giuliani’s appearance on the Fox reality competition series after his participation was first revealed by Deadline in February.
The reaction on the show to the man who helped Trump spread his baseless claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen was an interesting one.
There were genuine gasps and looks of shock from the audience as well as a stunned Cannon when the mask came off, and judge Ken Jeong immediately crossed his arms.
Fellow judge Nicole Scherzinger looked confused and asked Jeong, “Is that Robert Duvall?” a reference to Thicke’s earlier guess.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first pair of exclusive tracks from Thomas Newman’s score for Operation Mincemeat, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as Warner Bros. releases the film in the UK and Ireland.
Operation Mincemeat tells the extraordinary story of two intelligence officers that changed the course of World War II, saving tens of thousands of lives and breaking Hitler’s deadly grip on Europe by recruiting the skills of the most unlikely of secret agents: a dead man.
For the drama, Newman looked to craft a striking orchestral score, which evoked intensely dramatic action, while befitting more nuanced moments. The film was directed by John Madden, with whom Newman had previously collaborated on titles including The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and The Debt. “John Madden is the perfect collaborator. Whip-smart, full of humor and a savvy listener,” says the composer.

Tom Holland doesn’t want to play Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man forever. To put a finer point on it, Holland doesn’t want to be playing Spider-Man in as few as five years. He said as much while promoting the biggest Spider-Man movie of all-time, last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“Maybe it is time to move on,” Holland told GQ in November, ahead of the release of No Way Home and this month’s Uncharted. “Maybe what’s best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film… [but] if I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.” Holland turns 26 in June.
Admittedly, these public comments could be perceived as strong-arm tactics intended to persuade Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios into a significant pay rise going forward. Nevertheless, it’s worth considering that many Marvel Studios leading men and women have attempted to step away from the secure,...

How much longer can the industry ignore the reverence of actor Colman Domingo before they decide to take notice? This holiday weekend gives audiences the 2020 Sundance Film Festival hit “Zola” from A24 and co-writer and director Janicza Bravo. As “X,” the mysterious and terrifying “roommate” of Stefani (Riley Keough), who takes her, the free-spirited Zola (Taylour Paige) and the emotionally unstable Derrek (Nicholas Braun) on a road trip to Florida to dance at a strip club, Domingo slithers through the role with focus and menacing ease.

There’s no denying that Robert Downey Jr. is a phenomenal actor when he’s at the top of his game, but there was also the feeling that he was growing far too comfortable in his high-paying gig as the face of the most lucrative franchise the business has ever seen. Since returning from the wilderness to shoot to the top of the A-list in 2008’s Iron Man, nine of his following seventeen big screen appearances saw him playing Tony Stark.

The actor’s first non-mcu role since 2014’s legal drama The Judge bombed hard at the box office to the surprise of absolutely nobody, but 2020 has been such a wild ride that Dolittle still ranks as the third highest-grossing movie of the year behind only Bad Boys For Life and Sonic the Hedgehog.
The 55 year-old doesn’t have any other projects announced apart from the long-awaited third entry in the Sherlock Holmes franchise, which is still penciled in for release next December with Rocketman‘s Dexter Fletcher replacing Guy Ritchie behind the camera. But Downey Jr. and co-star Jude Law are the only members of the cast that have been announced so far and progress on the project has been slow.

Before landing the monumental role of Tony Stark/Iron Man within the McU, Robert Downey Jr.‘s career was stuck in a downward spiral. The actor’s reputation tainted by substance abuse, he eventually escaped his addictions and in doing so, solidified himself as one of America’s quintessential modern stars.
Though mostly known as Iron Man, Rdj has delivered strong performances in various other movies, too. These include the mystery thriller series Sherlock Holmes as well as the enjoyable personal drama The Judge. However, one of the actor’s most underrated films to date may just be Due Date, and it’s coming to Netflix next month.
First released in 2010, Due Date stars Rdj alongside Zach Galifianakis and Michelle Monaghan. Directed by Joker maestro Todd Phillips, it follows a soon-to-be dad who’s forced to embark on a road trip with an aspiring actor in order to make it...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Above: The Light that FailedShe had the beauty and talent of the most captivating star, the unwavering determination of the most ambitious producer, and the fervent creative vision of the most gifted director. Ida Lupino could fall into any number of categories, yet with a significance that remains almost immeasurable, perhaps the one word best describing this groundbreaking artist is simply this: she was a pioneer. Her mother, actress Connie O’Shea (also known as Connie Emerald), and her father, music hall comedian Stanley Lupino, were part of an ancestral dynasty of performers, and young Ida was accordingly encouraged to take the stage during her earliest years. In addition to writing her first play at the age of seven,...

Thankfully for the sake of this story there was no insult or even disrespect to talk about, as the idea that Robert Downey Jr. decided to use Robert Duvall instead of Jack Nicholson in The Judge was due more to a desire to see the script remain unaltered in order to get the whole story out. For those that don’t remember this movie or haven’t seen it yet, The Judge is the tale of a man that is estranged from his father due to relationship issues in the past. The main character, a lawyer who hasn’t seen eye to eye

David Dobkin had no idea the Eurovision Song Contest even existed until the script by Will Ferrell and Andrew Steele landed on his desk. But the director of “The Judge” and “Wedding Crashers” fell in love with both the comedy about the international music competition — “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” — and the contest itself, founded in 1956.
The movie stars Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic musicians Lars and Sigrit, who see the contest as their big break. Dan Stevens, Demi Lovato and Pierce Brosnan also appear in the film, which bowed June 26 on Netflix.
To put together what Dobkin calls a love letter to the competition, albeit one with an off-kilter spin, he assembled a below-the-line team that included production designer Paul Inglis (art director for “Blade Runner 2049” and “Skyfall”), costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, editor Greg Hayden and music producer Savan Koetcha, who has worked with Lovato,...

In the before times, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, a comedy directed by David Dobkin and co-written by and starring Will Ferrell, a comedian who’s made a virtual meal out of playing a relentlessly high-energy, dim-witted man-child and buffoon, was all set to premiere with the 65th edition of the European Song Contest in May. But with the pandemic raging and large-scale mass events a no-go for the foreseeable future — the competition was delayed an entire year — Netflix decided to forego any synergy that might accrue with the simultaneous release of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga with the actual competition and stream Farrell’s musical parody now. They probably should...

This year’s Human Rights Watch Film Festival, streaming nationwide from June 11-20, is chock-full of impressive cinematic gems that delve into a wide variety of important topics woefully underrepresented onscreen. Beginning with opening night’s Belly of the Beast, the latest from Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Erika Cohn (The Judge), which shines a light on the involuntary sterilizations running rampant in our Us federal prison system, the fest continues to express its commitment to strong films by and about women. Most notably there’s Juliana Fanjul’s harrowing Radio Silence — which trails longtime journalist Carmen Artesegui in her dangerous fight to […]...
