Comedy of Censure
WinterWoodwere16 December 2019
Judas and Jesus is a strange yet lovely short film. The dynamic between Christ and his apostle Judas has been explored many times before, but this certainly was a unique take.

Will it offend? Certainly. The nature of this film is definitely one which could enrage the devout, or excite the nonbeliever. If one views this purely through an entertainment lens, someone with knowledge of scripture and politics (both modern and historical) will note some interesting biblical references and jokes through iconography .

Will it arouse? Probably. This movie has some rather sexual scenes, which explains why it has made its way on some explicit websites. I first learned of this movie through a short excerpt (of an already short film) which was being passed off as some "banned christian education film" in which it appears as normal until there's suddenly some rather risque visuals.

Ultimately, this movie is a pretty interesting film, with some great themes and a beautiful early cartoon style. However this movie does not appeal to most audiences, chances are if you're reading this you've made the journey here to write a scathing review, or would love this movie. Either way, it is well put together, has enjoyable character dynamics, and a pretty good soundtrack. The music provided by the psychobilly band "The Meteors" was an interesting choice which I was instantly in love with, despite not having heard of the band beforehand.

Final Score 76/100

Irreverent & Outrageous
gizmomogwai20 February 2021
Judas & Jesus, a German animated short, takes the classic Looney Tunes-style of animation (complete with the classic opening and "That's all sheeps!" closing) and uses it for pure blasphemy. It retells the story of the Gospels using anthropomorphic sheep, and then goes full pornographic - the males look like sheep, but the females look like always-naked babes. The story is told from the point of view of Judas, not an apostle turned traitor, but in this version, a full-blown Satanist and rebel who hates Jesus. Wanting to get with Mary Magdalene, and into her sex show, he snitches on Jesus for 30 euros.

Jesus is portrayed as uptight, heavy-handed, severe and prudish. Judas and the adult Mary Magdalene are treated as perverse, but one has to feel for them given the scorn thrust upon them by Jesus. The story of the Gospels may have been that Jesus brought a vision of love and outreach, but what this short shows us is closer to how Christian authorities actually act. Therein lies the satire. The pictures the teen Judas has of Mary are too outrageous for words. All in all, a short of interest.

Bible meets Walter Moers / Rötger Feldmann
Horst_In_Translation26 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Judas & Jesus" is a 15-minute animated short film from 2009, so only two more years until this one has its 10th anniversary. The writer and director is Olaf Encke and this is one of his more known efforts so far. We will see if he manages a full feature film at some point. Until then, we got this one, the story of Judas and Jesus with both characters being portrayed by wolves with many many sheep around them. I wonder if that is also a statement what the maker (no pun intended) thinks about the Bible. Anyway, things get complicated in the sense of temptation when a creature that is half devil and half temptation crosses Judah's path. And she is just as promiscuous as her appearance would suggest, even the boss of a local swingers club. this is a crass, over-the-top little movie that is really scared of nothing, especially when it comes to sexuality. The story is fine, the animation is pretty good too. I think it was a decent watch and I recommend this German production. Dialogue is pretty much non-existent, so you can watch it wherever you are from and don't need subtitles. I would not say it was a great watch, but there's many worse ways to spend a quarter of an hour. Unless you are really religious and/or easily offended, go check it out.

If Fritz the Cat starred Jesus the Goat
f_mckissack12 March 2010
This is a fantastically blasphemous animated short. Full of violence, sex, and the kind of humour that strikes right at the heart of the self- righteous, this film has everything to inflame the Christian audience no doubt tearing this thing apart.

Which is a shame, because the production is top notch, and the comedic timing is impeccable. Judas as a character is able to be sympathised with while also being the kind of despicable low-life that seems to embody most of today's oversexed youth. Any way you look at it, it is intelligent and challenging.

Probably too pornographic to watch openly at work, this is still a must see. Rebellious, intelligent, sexy and constantly funny, a feature film could be made out of this material and I would lap it up. Brilliant stuff that I hope is appreciated around the world.

The heart of old cartoons meets religious level
catboy75125 March 2012
Without saying much of anything, this cartoon has embodied what cartoons used to be like when they were thought out and had plot. This not only caters to those of open-minded humor but also gives people a chance to laugh at something taboo. It may never reach the acceptance level of the common viewer, but those who are educated and are not instantly offended by the idea of religious comedy can surely look past the gratuitous content and accept it as a whole. Eternal rivalry, independent goals, and the vying for the attention of a female have always been grand ideals to pursue. This short makes no exception, putting the well-known icons of Christianity into an anthropomorphic form and generally having fun with them. I especially enjoy the smooth animation style and how the scenes dissolve into one another at the appropriate times. I think that others will find how surprisingly accurate the characters are depicted and the idea that this film doesn't have much issue at all with language barriers. It's not a children's cartoon, but definitely for those who grew up on them around the early 90's.

The real deal
bruce-223-97839511 June 2014
I have always been a fan of Judas. He is and always will be my favorite disciple. I wont go into why but this video starts its viewer on a divergent path with the passion story we know today. It does so by mocking the "cartoonish" representations we have created with figures who really had some very multidimensional to say.

Anyone seeing Mary in this video will immediately wish to some very nasty things to her and the tale confirms that she will probably enjoy all of them. And she may teach you a thing or two.

I encourage you to EXPERIENCE this video. Then figure out not what it is trying to accomplish but what has it stirred in you.

It is also entertaining, well animated... and NSFW. Except I watch it at work... so whatever.

Not that good but still a bit important and not for everyone
scoobdooj24 December 2022
Judas & Jesus is pure blasphemy and that's it, don't expect a funny thing it's not that funny only having 2-3 funny scenes and has many sex jokes that extends more than it should considering is a 14min short film, the beginning it's whatever with that Judas birth scene that surely extends to show that Satan's house is lustful, the movie is quick that's for sure which makes the ending feel a bit rushed but in that case is not a problem, also that final Maria scene was weird to a level that isn't good. But still it's a bit important to animation history, at the time it brought the debate if animation and comedy should have liberty to do whatever it wants or not, but still isn't that good, it's one of these cases where you respect it more than enjoys.

Well animated, but nothing much else
spottedstar_the_first16 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For those who aren't aware, this is an anthropomorphic retelling of two Biblical stories: how Judas betrayed Jesus, combined with the story of how armageddon begins with wh*re of Babylon and the seven-headed dragon. I say combined because neither of these stories are connected (other than through being in the same religious text), and the representation of Mary's character alone shows that Encke's knowledge on Christianity is purely based on ill-preached zealots and pop culture.

The animation of the short is fantastic -- smooth movements, expressive body language, and exaggerated facial features really call back to the classic hand-drawn cartoons done by Warner and Disney. That alone is what garnered three stars because it's that impressive. I say this because, well... not much else about this is.

The story itself is very ham-fisted with the satire, to the point that it feels like Encke tried too hard to be offensive; where the animation feels like classic hand-drawn cartoons, the satire echoes that of modern day MacFarlane or South Park, begging for negative response so one can point and laugh and say "Ha! You're SO mad!" Satire, when done correctly, can deliver an important message about cultural and social issues. Encke just seemed to forget that satire isn't supposed to be consistently blatant.

The characters themselves are also pretty flat: Jesus, the privileged-born self-made martyr who makes a point to show off his holiness while implying it to all be a farce, being just as bad as everyone else. Judas, the under-privileged bad boy born, living a hedonistic life and being the only one to see how self-righteous Jesus is. Mary Magdalene, the love interest of both, who is indulged by Judas and scorned by Jesus.

The irony is how much of a martyr the story seemed to make Judas -- born poor and in a wh*rehouse (meaning no nuclear family dynamic and no loving parents), he wants people to see what a horrible person Jesus truly is, and in the end, is lynched for selling him out. It's very clear the intention was to show the audience how Christianity obviously twisted the story to make the pompous guy the hero and the only one who saw what an a-hole Jesus was the villain. "The wrong side of history blah blah blah". This message is made clear 2 minutes in yet they beat it to death for an entire 15.

The music choices were just as overly blatant. In any scene featuring Judas' bad-boy lifestyle habits and choices, I can't pinpoint any songs by name, but I feel that I could tag any stereotypical rock and roll "i'm no saint i'm a stone cold sinner" song from the '70s or '80s and it would fit. The way the songs were cut in and out was unnatural; it reminded me of the early YouTube days when people would use MovieMaker and make those video stories, and any time the mood changed they'd just have the current song fade out completely in the middle of a line and then fade in a new song, in the middle of a new line. It made the audio as a whole very distracting and somewhat jarring in contrast to tne quality of the animation, like a high schooler did the audio editing.

As a retelling, it is, once again, on the same Bibical knowledge level as someone who went to one church sermon with a biased preacher, and the rest of their knowledge and experience on Christianity came from neckbeard atheists and adult cartoons. Anyone who does their research -- which one would if they were to write a satirical piece on the subject they're criticizing -- will quickly find these things in the first hour or so of research: Jesus did not shame anyone for their sins. The whole point of him being seen as holy as he was, was that others would shame people for their sins, and he would tell them, "do not shame them; forgive them". Yes, this can he taken in a self-righteous manner, depending on the "sin" in question and whether or not the intention was to "forgive" them for being offensive to the masses, or to "forgive" them for what makes them human and ultimately, not shame them for being human. The depiction of Jesus in this film reflects how Christians may act, but the point of the film wasn't about the hypocrisy of modern day zealots versus scripture. If it was, then this satirical depiction would be perfect! But it wasn't. Judas wasn't scorned or othered; he was one of the twelve disciples and followed Jesus' teachings. This alone makes this entire satire that much more ineffective; in the Bible, they only demonize Judas once he decides to betray Jesus. Until then he is treated just like the other disciples. There's also discrepancies on whether Judas betrayed Jesus due to greed (as depicted in this animation) or if he was literally influenced by Satan -- something not completely within his control, something that would actually make his situation, to a degree, sympathetic. Mary. As mentioned earlier, Mary's depiction alone solidifies that Encke has little knowledge of Christianity. In fact, I retract my statement about research for an hour, just for this part, because I Googled Mary Magdalene just for the hell of it to see if this would be buried information, and it wasn't: Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. She was not seen as a sexual deviant. She is, in fact, a saint. And this information comes up in the wikipedia on her within the fourth paragraph of the introductory information on her! This alone highlights how little Encke actually looked into Christianity, and, frankly, seals the fate of this entire short.

Satire is meant criticize issues and reveal the idiocracy of those causing the issues, but in order to criticize, you first need to understand your topic. As someone who was never even devout to Christianity, I can say this is hardly a satire, because Encke doesn't know anything about what he's criticizing. This is more so an edgy furry fanfiction retelling of the relationship of Jesus and Judas.

As a disclaimer: I'm a former Christian, now polytheist. So no, my review isn't influenced by any kind of religious bias. I love to pick apart all religions -- they're fascinating! And Western Christianity has a LOT of problems! But the execution of said dissection for entertainment should be judged just like any non-theistic satire. This was a failed attempt at satire and should be regarded as such. Does that mean you can't enjoy it or be entertained by it? Of course not! But no, this is not good satire. Just edgy, uninformed, and probably reflecting some pretty hard bias.

Bad & Blasphemy
SweetieReviews19 March 2021
This film, wouldn't even call it a film more a blasphemy/blasphemous p*rn. Can't wait for god/jesus to come and clean the unholy things on this earth. I believe that when god/jesus comes to earth, all the work that you and others had made will perish unless god see good in the creation as he saw goodness in the earth when he created the earth. But first when god/jesus comes he take his people/ the one who believe in him. Then the rest will stay behind, but after that is done and everyone is gone from earth because either you die or go hell. There will be a new earth and on this earth we will have new lives and relive life with a new. So everything in life that we have now will be gone and the knowledge we have will be gone. We will all have new names that jesus give us and speak in another language then English. God/jesus will let you have a choice to stay in heaven or live in the new earth and relive life again. But this is if you make it to heaven in hell the devil will punish you with your dark fear and it be super painful where you wish you wasn't bad. (This is a friendly way of saying the punishment there is more worser way to describe it but this is long enough.) Wish you people Goodluck and may god bless you everyday remember be responsible respectful and spread kindness not hate. (This wasn't to force anyone to my beliefs I just want you know what I think and my beliefs/wanted to spread the word of god. And if you don't care it is okay lovelys I am only here to spread the word of god/jesus and explain. It is okay if you dont care or believe in it is okay and is your choice, just thank you for reading this and may you have a wonderful day.

Shock Value and Decent Animation, and that's about it really
torvosaurus19 February 2021
Religion is a none-factor here because this is a piece of fiction. I seriously don't get people bashing or praising this film solely based on the religion. I honestly couldn't care less.

That said, not much going on here. Edgy bad boy gets the sexy girl while the lame prude is a whimpy nerd who dies in an over-the-top parody of whats supposed to be a sacrifice. Script and structure come off mostly as someone who is trying to be mature by attacking 'The Man' i.e. the Eastern story and it's meanings. The animation is very smooth and character design ain't at all bad. But really, that's about it. If you're someone who wants to 'stick it to the man' and make Christianity your target, you'll probably like it. If you want some actual storytelling with more plot, pay off, and consequences than a Family Guy skit, go look somewhere else.

It was animated very well, But that doesn't make it good.
cjt-5633213 June 2023
This movie is not Christian. Not in the most generous sense of the word.

But. I have to say. It perfectly incapsulates the depravity, filth and evil of our modern world. Where even stories as sacred as those in the bible are perverted in an unimaginable way.

It is a perfect depiction of the perverse reality we have forged ourselves. Sex, violence, profanity. And all animated as well. Animation, which is an art form we attribute to quality of innocence.

We have no respect for anything sacred anymore. We're destroying ourselves for pleasure. We are a filthy, abominable generation of people, and we deserve something as filthy and crass as this.
