Juneteenth, which falls on June 19, commemorates the fall of slavery in the United States.
It celebrates the anniversary of the order made by Major General Gordon Granger on June 1965 that proclaimed freedom for slaves in Texas. The order was actually made two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In a tweet Monday, former President Obama explained it as the “delayed but welcome news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas.” In 2021, President Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Many networks are marking the occasion with Juneteenth TV specials or movie marathons showcasing Black talent and/or excellence. See our viewing guide below:

“Mary’s an easy person to fall in love with,” says the filmmaker James Adolphus, who has spent the past three years making a documentary about Hollywood icon Mary Tyler Moore.
In Being Mary Tyler Moore, which HBO will release in May after a March 13 premiere at SXSW, Adolphus documents Moore’s career, interweaving professional highlights like the Dick Van Dyke Show and the Mary Tyler Moore Show, with inclusions from an extensive personal archive. The goal is to show Moore’s impact entertainment and on generations of women. One of those women is the documentary’s producer, Lena Waithe.
After Moore passed in 2017, Adolphus says, her husband Robert Levine was tasked with keeping the star’s legacy but was unsure how to go about it. There were offers from other filmmakers to tell Moore’s life story but he was unconvinced until reading a Vanity Fair 2018 cover story...

After two years of virtual festivals, Sundance is overdue for a comeback. The Park City event is set to return to Park City on January 19 and continue through January 29. While films will still be available to online ticket holders starting January 24, the main emphasis will be the in-person experience that put Sundance on the map in the first place.
While the pandemic disrupted the film industry in 2020, Sundance managed to take place that year just before the shutdowns, launching future Best Picture winner “Coda” into an unpredictable landscape. Now, the market and culture of moviegoing remains in flux, and Sundance is poised to return to the scene just in time to launch a wide array of movies into that ever-changing climate.

It was a battle between two of primetime’s most popular shows on Wednesday as CBS’ “Big Brother” and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” fought for the ratings crown.
“Big Brother” came out victorious in terms of the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, with a whopping 0.75 rating, to which “AGT” couldn’t hold a flame with only a 0.62.
However, in terms of total viewers, “AGT” still won out with an average of 6.8 million compared to 3.9 million for “Big Brother.”
Despite a strong performance from “Big Brother,” the rest of CBS’ lineup couldn’t muster high enough ratings to help the network take the top spot. That went to NBC, thanks to a solid showing from its new game show, “Password,” which helped boost the network’s average to a 0.57 in the demo (which beat CBS’ 0.49 average).

Tamron Hall is moving to a new part of the Walt Disney empire.
The news and talk-show veteran, whose current program has been syndicated by Disney since its launch in the fall of 2019, will now be part of ABC News, according to a person familiar with the matter, adding another daytime talk program to the news division’s portfolio. ABC News already oversees “The View,” and has since the fall of 2014. ABC News launched a third hour of “Good Morning America” in the afternoon, which has morphed into a harder-edged news update show co-anchored by Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes.
A memo detailing the change was issued Friday to ABC News staffers by Kim Godwin, the president of the unit. Candi Carter, executive producer of the syndicated program, will continue as its showrunner. Hall is also an executive producer of the series.

The trials and tribulations of Erika “Jayne” Girardi of Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” are now being examined in an ABC News Original special for Hulu. “The Housewife and the Hustler” will premiere on the streaming service on June 14. The teaser trailer for “The Housewife and the Hustler,” set to the Fergie song “Glamorous,” indicates that the investigation’s tone will be a departure from ABC News’ recent, highly praised series “Soul of a Nation,” which examined Black life in the United States.
According to the press release for “The Housewife and the Hustler,” “ABC News Originals goes inside the real-life legal drama facing the husband of ‘The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ cast member Erika Jayne, legal titan Tom Girardi. Once considered a crusader of justice, Girardi now stands accused of embezzling from the victims he swore to protect.”
