Imperator Furiosa is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important characters to hit the big screen in the last 20 years. She represents a justified rage often denied to women in post-apocalyptic films, a physical capability typically reserved for men who have been shaved down from slabs of meat on a GyroKone, and serves as a protector of the five wives — a woman looking after other women who are treated as little more than a form of currency. When "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller expressed a desire to make a standalone epic prequel focusing on Furiosa, fans were thrilled at the prospect. Charlize Theron beautifully brought Furiosa to life, so it was only natural that she'd be brought back for the film.
During a special screening of "Furiosa" and a press event with Miller at IMAX Headquarters, he explained that replacing Theron was a matter of logistics.

Fans were clearly devastated after the announcement that Charlize Theron is no longer returning to lead the upcoming post-apocalyptic film Furiosa, but director George Miller has a very logical reason for this decision.
Anya Taylor-Joy in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The prequel franchise is now led by Anya Taylor-Joy who portrays the young version of Furiosa. There had been ideas of using CGI on Theron to de-age her, but this was ultimately scrapped by Miller.
George Miller Explains Why He Replaced Charlize Theron In Furiosa
During his interview with Variety, filmmaker George Miller explained how using CGI won’t do the job for Furiosa. He noted that, while the technology is a great option, it has its limits.
“I saw not only The Irishman but Ang Lee’s Gemini Man with Will Smith. Both of them were masterful directors, but it was never persuasive. I thought all people would...

Even after almost a decade, critics and audiences continue to heap praise on Mad Max: Fury Road. The 2015 sci-fi classic earns every accolade, from its subtle character work to its jaw-dropping visuals. But there’s one thing that cannot be said about Fury Road: that it has no CG.
True, director George Miller and his stunt team did many of the most impressive action sequences in-camera. But he did so with the assistance of computer graphics to erase the safety wires and other rigging. In other words, Miller has no problem using computer effects, provided that they don’t get in the way of the story he’s telling.
For the same reason, Miller chose to recast one of the people most responsible for the brilliance of Fury Road. In the upcoming prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Anya-Taylor Joy smears on the black grease paint of Imperator Furiosa, taking...

It’s been decades since Martin Scorsese was proclaimed one of the best directors of all time — and to this day he doesn’t lose the ground having proved his status with last year’s masterpiece Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone.
However, artistic genius often goes hand in hand with stubborn and intractable nature — and Scorsese’s ex colleagues from Warner Bros. had a big chance to see this with their own eyes.
Back in 2006, Scorsese released his epic crime thriller The Departed — the film eventually got to be commercially and critically acclaimed classic of the genre, earning almost $300 million in the box office with the initial budget of $90 million and taking home four Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
To many people’s surprise, the almost 20-year-old film to this day remains Scorsese’s one and only directorial win.

A potential sequel to “A Knight’s Tale,” the 2001 period comedy that starred the late Heath Ledger as an aspiring knight, was killed by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland.
“I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix and releasing it as a Netflix movie,” the original film’s writer-director told Inverse in an interview published Monday. “My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful.”
He said he was surprised at that, because “‘A Knight’s Tale’ seems to get more popular with every passing year; it’s the strangest thing.”
Helgeland’s idea was to make a pirate sequel right after the first film wrapped, he said, detailing the proposed plot.

The Taylor Swift drops just keep coming.
At midnight, Swift released her 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department” — and then announced two hours later that it’s a surprise double album, leaving casual fans and Swifites alike to spend the day decoding who the songs are about. (How many Friday afternoon Slack messages were devoted to parsing if a song was about Swift exes Joe Alwyn or Matty Healy?) And then came the album’s first music video for single “Fortnite,” co-written by and featuring Post Malone.
In addition to “Dead Poets Society” (note that neither title uses an apostrophe) alums Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, the music video boasts another big name: Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”).
This isn’t the first time Prieto has collaborated with Swift. The cinematographer previously worked on the 2020 music videos for Swift’s songs “The Man,” “Cardigan,” and “Willow.

Al Pacino is the Oscar-winning actor who has starred in dozens of classics throughout his nearly 50 year career, from his star-making breakthrough in “The Godfather” (1972) to his late-career triumph in “The Irishman” (2019). Tour through our photo gallery of Pacino’s 25 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Though an acting legend, it took Pacino 20 years and eight nominations to finally cash in his Oscar I.O.U. for “Scent of a Woman”. Prior to that he competed for “The Godfather”, “Serpico”, “The Godfather, Part II”, “Dog Day Afternoon”, “… And Justice for All”, “Dick Tracy” and “Glengarry Glen Ross”, but he didn’t win any of those bids.
Surprisingly, his 1992 noms for “Scent of a Woman” and “Glengarry Glen Ross” were followed by a long Academy drought, despite additional critically acclaimed performances in “Heat” (1995), “Donnie Brasco” (1997), “The Insider” (1999) and “Insomnia” (2002). I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...

It’s official: The book isn’t always better than the movie.
Filmmakers have been interpreting popular books for the screen since the invention of cinema, from influential novels to page-turning mysteries, comics, and buzzy book-club picks. But if you’re looking for a book-to-movie viewing recommendation, no need to consult a librarian — we’ve rounded up some of the most exciting and engrossing films to be adapted from the page.
Because there are so many adaptations out there, we’re keeping this list to original Netflix films. Those page-to-screen stories include titles as varied as Rebecca Hall’s moving take on the Harlem Renaissance classic Passing, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s kinetic action flick taken from the panels of comic book The Old Guard, and Martin Scorsese’s engrossing crime saga realizing the nonfiction mob chronicle I Heard You Paint Houses — among many others. Dakota Johnson is a passenger in both life and a yellow taxi cab, seeking connection with whomever is most near. For her, that turns out to be crass driver Clark, played by Sean Penn in the two-hander drama “Daddio.”
Their shared journey is from New York City’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Hell’s Kitchen, with Johnson’s character Girlie determined to get to Clark’s innermost being. He’s not into it. The indie feature written and directed by Christy Hall debuted at TIFF 2023 and will next play at Tribeca 2024.

Martin Scorsese’s history with the Academy Awards hasn’t always been cheerful, but the veteran filmmaker managed to grab one for The Departed in 2007. The Boston-set crime thriller exposed the many institutional problems with crime fighting. By the end of the film, all the ‘rats’ end up dead, sending a clear message about the film’s themes to the viewers. However, Warner Bros. wasn’t exactly thrilled that Scorsese killed off the stars of the film.

In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Billy Costigan and Matt Damon’s Colin Sullivan were working as moles in the Irish mob and the Massachusetts State Police respectively. Both stars were assets to WB if the movie were ever made into a franchise, but Scorsese had very different plans for them.

From the vastly untapped and underrated vision of Alex Garland comes yet another Oscar-winning project. Civil War stands out as an exceptionally well-drawn-out feature that presents itself as a thesis on the modern world, its ghastly conflicts, and the ultimate breakdown of social order. Andrew Scott Shines, Yet ‘Ripley’ Lacks Vigor The latest iteration of Patricia Highsmith’s ‘Ripley’ novels, despite its aesthetic allure and Andrew Scott’s (‘Fleabag’) magnetic performance, fails to deliver a compelling narrative. However, the series struggles to find its footing beyond its visual appeal. Steven Zaillian, known for his work on ‘The Irishman’ and ‘The Night Of’, seems to have overlooked the essence of engaging television amidst crafting artful frames. When is an already well-distinguished artist arguably underrated and still overdue for further and greater recognition? Well, 71-year-old writer/director Steven Zaillian, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter (“Schindler’s List”) and five-time nominee, is already regarded as one of the most celebrated screenwriters on the planet. Yet, following the release of the fabulous “Ripley,” his striking and haunting new Netflix series— not to mention in addition to his excellent and deeply undervalued 2016 series, “The Night Of” starring Riz Ahmed— Zaillian’s filmmaking career recognition merits an ascension to the level of venerated master.

Aspiring screenwriter Simon Afram and producer Edward Kahl have settled their lawsuit with legendary director Martin Scorsese. The lawsuit alleged that Scorsese took $500,000 to help make a World War II movie called Operation: Fortitude but did nothing.

Back in January 2022, Afram and Kahl hired Scorsese to be an executive producer on their movie project. They thought having him involved would attract great actors and a top-notch director. They even planned to start filming in Europe later that year. But things didn’t work out as they hoped.

Martin Scorsese has settled a lawsuit from an aspiring screenwriter who accused him of pocketing $500,000 to help develop a World War II movie — and then doing nothing.
Simon Afram wrote “Operation: Fortitude,” a screenplay about the Allied effort to deceive the German army as to the whereabouts of the Normandy invasion. He and another producer, Edward Kahl, hired Scorsese in January 2022 to serve as an executive producer, which they hoped would help attract an A-list cast and director. They also hoped to begin production in Europe later that year.
That didn’t happen. In the lawsuit, the aspiring filmmakers contend that’s because the “Killers of the Flower Moon” director did not lift a finger to help after taking their money — and would not even meet with them. According to the suit, they sought repeatedly to talk directly with Scorsese, but his managers always said that he was too busy with other things.

George Miller recast the role of Furiosa in the Mad Max film of the same name – and he’s been explaining why he didn’t go down the digital de-ageing route.
When George Miller began to draw up plans to bring Furiosa to life, he faced a difficult decision. After all, the character who would be at the heart of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel was portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film, and the actor was so brilliant as the hardened warrior that removing her from the prequel risked losing much of what worked about the character.
So what to do? Miller has been chatting with Empire, talking about considering applying digital de-ageing tools to Charlize Theron in the film so she could play a younger version of herself. He wouldn’t be the first filmmaker to try this approach across a whole film, but when he looked...

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) reignited the post-apocalyptic genre with its action and vision. This was the fourth movie in the Mad Max franchise and the first since 1985. Directed by the creative mind of George Miller, it starred Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in leading roles.
Tom Hardy || Mad Max: Fury Road
The film’s success led to calls for more, and those calls are being answered with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel focusing on Theron’s character’s earlier adventures. However, Theron won’t be reprising the role and there’s a solid reason behind this.

Director George Miller is synonymous with the Mad Max franchise, which helped cement his status as one of the best action filmmakers in Hollywood. 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, won the director critical acclaim and reinvigorated interest in the hit franchise.
Charlize Theron as Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road
The film was anchored by Charlize Theron’s brilliant performance as Imperator Furiosa. However, when Miller announced that he was working on a Furiosa-centric prequel/spin-off film without Theron’s involvement some fans were understandably bummed. Has it really been nine years since "Mad Max: Fury Road" barreled into theaters, reestablished George Miller as (arguably) the greatest action filmmaker on the planet, and made a blessedly clean break with the franchise's highly problematic (to put it lightly) star? Almost a decade later, everything about the film feels not just present, but prescient. Thematically, aesthetically, and politically, it was the perfect film for an uncertain time -- and, in terms of judiciously utilizing CG to enhance practical, large-scale stunt work, no one has come close to matching it.
"Mad Max: Fury Road" loses none of its high-octane impact on rewatch, but when you begin analyzing it on a purely technical level you can't help but wonder how in the heck Miller pulled it together without going, well, mad. No less a filmmaker than Steven Soderbergh has expressed total bewilderment (in a good way) over Miller's achievement. So...

Now that the Oscar winners are known, we can determine the other winners: the studios’ and distributors’ strategic release decisions that impacted results.
Some may reflect genius or gut instinct; others are timing and preparation creating luck. In each case, distribution (or the lack thereof) played a significant role in positioning the films for success — but none of them could be considered a template.
Surprisingly, the universal non-factor appeared to be SAG strike, which constrained promotion. “Oppenheimer” completed most cast appearances in time, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” had press stockpiled from Cannes. The French “Anatomy of a Fall” was unaffected.
“The Holdovers,” along with “Priscilla,” took the biggest chances with their October releases. Both made platform debuts on the same day. Sofia Coppola’s biopic showed a faster response, but Alexander Payne’s film found awards success (as well as a near-equal box office haul and bigger home...

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.

Martin Scorsese has been making films since the ‘60s and debuted with Who’s That Knocking On My Door and struggled for a bit before finding his breakthrough with the gangster film Mean Streets.

Cannavale and De Niro previously worked together in the Martin Scorsese gangster pic “The Irishman.”
This project will be much more lighthearted than the previous one; however, it still has dramatic aspects.

Known for her roles in Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney recently opened up during an SXSW Q&a session about her dream director. No, he is not Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan; rather, she would prefer to collaborate with Martin Scorsese.
This may surprise some people considering Nolan’s standing as a visionary director, who recently won the Oscar for Oppenheimer. That being said, the two-time Emmy-nominated actress, 26, might have been drawn in by Scorsese’s storytelling and character development.
However, her admiration for Scorsese might not necessarily lead to any Academy Award wins. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, the Taxi Driver director has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions.

The psychodrama of the Oscars and Martin Scorsese was seemingly pierced when “The Departed” won four Oscars in 2007, including for his one and only time for Best Director and his only film to win Best Picture.
Two years before, “The Aviator” won five, and five years later, “Hugo” won five. All signs that the drought was over.
The case for the glass being half-empty, though, remains strong after Sunday night’s Academy Awards. With the 0-10 shutout for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” all four of his last narrative films since “Hugo” have received 26 nominations and zero wins.
And he now holds the distinction of having three films with no wins and 10 nominations (“Gangs of New York” and “The Irishman” also), just below the record of 0-11 held by “The Color Purple” and “The Turning Point.”
He personally now has one win out of 16 personal nominations — including 10 for Best Director,...

It was a rough Oscar night for Martin Scorsese fans: despite "Killers of the Flower Moon" being nominated for 10 Academy Awards this year, it somehow managed to lose every single one of them. Even "Best Actress," which many assumed would be a shoo-in for Lily Gladstone, instead went to Emma Stone for her performance in "Poor Things." Meanwhile, most of the categories "Killers of the Flower Moon" competed in went to "Oppenheimer," which dominated nearly the whole night.

When I caught up with him and wife Emma Thomas at the Governors Ball after their seven-Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan was clearly relieved. “I was genuinely nervous tonight, ” he told me. “Even after all the awards shows we’ve been to this year, this one sitting there at the Oscars was just different.”

But Nolan’s veteran producing colleague Chuck Roven, who brought him the book in the first place, nonetheless also confessed to a real sense of nervousness about the fate of the film that came into the Dolby with a leading 13 nominations.

Another Oscars season is over. The 96th Academy Awards have wrapped, and the full 2024 Oscars winners list has been revealed.
“Oppenheimer” had an air of inevitability about it unlike few Best Picture contenders in recent memory: IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted it would win seven Oscars tonight, including the top prize. And indeed it did, nabbing seven statuettes overall. But the triumphs for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards suggested it was the film to beat, by any standard.
“Oppenheimer” also received the most nominations overall, with 13. Its seven wins were for: Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture — the most of any film tonight. The next-most nominations was 11 for “Poor Things,” and then 10 for “Killers of the Flower Moon.

Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also drew a goose egg.
Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all.

Hours before the 96th Oscars, most prognosticators appear confident that nearly all 10 Best Picture nominees will be honored in at least one category apiece. Indeed, the consensus derived from the predictions of 9,000+ Gold Derby users is that “Past Lives” – which is only up for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay – will stand alone in being completely blanked. Yet, since seven films vying for the main prize are each leading just one other race, more across-the-board snubs are perfectly plausible if not assured.
In the 14 years since the Best Picture category’s preferential voting system was enacted, only two Academy Awards ceremonies (2015 and 2019) have ended with no contenders for the top honor leaving empty-handed. During this period, an annual average of 2.6 Best Picture nominees have wound up with zero trophies, with the biggest shutouts applying to five films apiece in 2014 and 2023. In the latter case, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans,...
