If you like to get your nerves tickled by a scary movie and want to watch a bunch of them in a row, we’ve got some good news for you. The most chilling horror trilogy of the 21st century finally arrives on Netflix, and it has no deal with Final Destination or Paranormal Activity and The Ring franchises, it’s something even better than these ones.
Back in 2013, the world saw the first installment of this movie universe. Set in the 1970s, the movie focused on Lorraine and Ed, the duo of paranormal investigators on their way to solve the case of an isolated farmhouse that is haunted by supernatural creatures.

Stephen King has been terrifying his audience since his first full-length novel, Carrie, released in 1974. The world has come to know him as the ‘King of Horror’ and rightfully so. Whether it is the story of a sinister presence in an empty hotel or the trauma caused by Pennywise, the author sure knows how to keep his readers up at night. His books have been adapted into films which are equally, if not more, petrifying.
It (2017) based on Stephen King’s namesake novel | New Line Cinema
However, the question is, is there anything that terrifies the man who has made scaring others into a living? Well, there might be one such film out there. Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project is a unique take on the horror genre that uses the found-footage technique to scare its audience, including Stephen King who had to turn his screen off without watching it to the end.

Bristol, United Kingdom — April 18, 2024 | Time travel has taken many forms over the years, a blue box, a DeLorean, and even a hot tub. But now a golden stopwatch has taken up the torch as the master of time, space and so much more, as players will discover in Yogscast Games and Perfectly Paranormal’s The Holy Gosh Darn, releasing for PC and consoles this Summer.
The Holy Gosh Darn – which is set on the same Tuesday as Perfectly Paranormal’s previous games Manual Samuel and Helheim Hassle – is a truly laugh-out-loud adventure, spanning realms way beyond the imagination, where time is more of an idea than a hard and fast rule. Along the way, players will meet a cast of ridiculous characters as they insult heavenly elders, travel to hell, meet exactly 4,250 dogs, and discover the very meaning of life, the universe and… well, everything – and no, it’s not...

Due to a complex series of anthropological mishaps, the Wayans Brothers are a huge deal in Brazil. Around these parts, White Chicks is considered a national treasure by a lot of people, so it stands to reason that Brazilian audiences would continue to accompany the Wayans’ comedic output long after North America had stopped taking them seriously as comedic titans.
This is the only reason why I originally watched Michael Tiddes and Marlon Wayans’ 2013 horror spoof A Haunted House – appropriately known as “Paranormal Inactivity” in South America – despite having abandoned this kind of movie shortly after the excellent Scary Movie 3. However, to my complete and utter amazement, I found myself mostly enjoying this unhinged parody of Found Footage films almost as much as the iconic spoofs that spear-headed the genre during the 2000s. And with Paramount having recently announced a reboot of the Scary Movie franchise, I think this...

“Paranormal Activity” juggernaut Blumhouse is returning to the Og found footage franchise, “The Blair Witch Project.”
During CinemaCon 2024, Lionsgate announced a multi-picture pact with Blumhouse to reimagine other horror classics from the Lionsgate library, starting with the iconic 1999 indie. No other specific titles from the library were unveiled on during Wednesday’s CinemaCon presentation.
“I’m very grateful to Adam and the team at Lionsgate for letting us play in their sandbox. I’m a huge admirer of ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ which brought the idea of found footage horror to mainstream audiences and became a true cultural phenomenon,” Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum said. “I don’t think there would have been a ‘Paranormal Activity’ had there not first been a ‘Blair Witch,’ so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.”

It’s set to reach the Shudder streaming service on April 19th, and in anticipation of the streaming release the film has gotten a new, retro-style poster. All it takes is one mention of the phrase “found footage” to elicit a reaction typically leaning in the direction of an eye roll. For decades, this genre, once brimming with promise, having produced now-classics ranging from the likes of “Cannibal Holocaust,” “The Blair Witch Project” and “Cloverfield” has worked its way into an oversaturated avalanche crushed under the weight of countless imitators and slew of “Paranormal Activity” follow-ups.

2009 is not exactly a year that horror fans remember fondly. What came out that year? Off the top of the head, not much comes up. A quick search gives us The Unborn, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and Drag Me to Hell. Depending on who you ask, these range from ok movies to Drag Me to Hell, but not exactly memorable overall. Something happened at the end of the 2000s and horror didn’t give us much to work with for some reason. If we dig, we get better titles like The Collector, Laid to Rest, and Paranormal Activity, but their box office ranged from amazing in the case of Paranormal Activity to almost nonexistent for the others, so it was completely hit or miss, like studios didn’t know what to push and what to keep for the home video market. Another movie that had a lot of potential...

Exclusive: Netflix has handed control to its Arabic content slate to long-serving exec Nuha El Tayeb following the exit of Ahmed Sharkawi.
El Tayeb has been with Netflix since 2018 and rose to her current role as Content Director for the Middle East & North Africa (Mena) region and Turkey in December 2019.
Following the exit of Arabic originals boss Sharkawi this month, she will expand her role to oversee the entire Arabic content slate, spanning acquisitions and originals for film and TV, both in scripted and unscripted. We understand she will be based at Netflix’s international HQ in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Sharkawi, who was Director of Arabic Content, Development, for the past five years out of Amsterdam, announced on LinkedIn earlier this month that he was leaving after “an unforgettable journey” and was “excited for new adventures ahead.” He exits Netflix under amicable circumstances. C21 first reported on his exit.

It was only a matter of time before we got a found footage horror film about Ohio’s cryptid oddity, Loveland’s Frogman (that’s not sarcastic; I’ve seen far stranger indie horror concepts). Anthony Cousins’ search for a slimy urban legend (shot almost exclusively on Hi-8), aptly titled Frogman, is a weirdo treat for fans of V/H/S/94‘s “Storm Drain” segment featuring Raatma and other handheld shaky-specials spawned from The Blair Witch Project inspirations. Shades of Willow Creek chase a mythical creature through dense woodland territories as our view bobbles around much like found footage diehards are used to, which won’t win over any motion-sick doubters of the subgenre — even with a third act that doesn’t shy away from noteworthy Frogman effects and an unrelenting sensation of “going there.”

Paranormal Activity has always been a top contender as far as horror films are concerned. Spanning close to two decades, this series from Blumhouse and Solana Films left no stone unturned to give chills to our bones. Starting with Paranormal Activity in 2007, this franchise has gifted a total of seven movies to horror film fans. Now, as things stand, after making a territory in the film industry, this long-hailed franchise is going to make a mark in the gaming industry as well.
With the collaboration of popular game-developing company DrakStone Digital and renowned indie horror publisher DreadXP, Paramount Game Studios will release the all-new horror game, Paranormal Activity: Found Footage, pretty soon. Let’s dive into the article to learn more about this horror gem.

Producer Jason Blum had said the Paranormal Activity franchise went dormant for a while after the release of 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension because he felt the series had gotten tired – and it wasn’t his idea to make Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, a failed attempt at a revival (that he described as “terrible”), back in 2021. He has been open about the fact that he feels there has been “enough already” when it comes to Paranormal Activity movies. But that doesn’t mean the franchise can’t continue in other ways. A few months back, we heard there’s a stage play in development, and now Variety has broken the news that a Paranormal Activity video game will be released in 2026!

Found footage horror movies are a dime a dozen, but they can still produce some of the scariest moments in horror. Whether set in a single bedroom or the vastness of the Maryland woods, plenty of the best horror movies can be found in the found footage genre.
One underrated found footage movie is the sci-fi horror film "Apollo 18." Released in 2011 and directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego from a script by Brian Miller, the film asks one question — why did we stop going to the moon? Rather than budget cuts and a lack of public interest in the space program, "Apollo 18" imagines a fictionalized version of the canceled Apollo 18 mission that quickly descends into terror and death. In the film, a trio of astronauts heading to the moon in 1974 learn their mission is not to study moon rocks or even Soviet missiles, but a recently-discovered alien species living on the moon.

Data was named one of the best albums of 2023 — but the brilliant compendium of futuristic, boundary-pushing songs took a massive amount of work from super-producer Tainy. The Puerto Rican innovator started masterminding the LP about three years ago, pouring his most avant-garde ideas and interests into the project. He finally ended up with an intricate maze of electronic, reggaeton, and ambient sounds that crisscross multiple styles and eras, all while yanking major acts like Bad Bunny, Four Tet, Feid, and Julieta Venegas into the album’s unexpected orbit.

Scream and Scream VI star Melissa Barrera will reportedly not be returning for the upcoming Scream 7, it was first reported in this week’s digital issue of Variety magazine.
THR adds, “Filming had not begun, and development had been slow amid the actors and writers strikes. Now, Spyglass is expected to recalibrate plans following Barrera.”
Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter is the leading member of the “Core Four,” the new group of survivor characters that have been leading this latest trilogy for the Scream franchise.
Sam Carpenter has been a particularly important character for the saga as she’s the daughter of original Scream killer Billy Loomis, and Barrerra was expected to return for Scream 7 alongside Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmine Savoy Brown. Ortega’s involvement in Scream 7 is also up in the air at this time, with no confirmation she’ll be returning.

A sexual encounter between two teenagers turns into a bloodbath with one or both of them no longer amongst the living. A few friends passing the dutchie discover how hazardous smoking is for your health when a maniac with a crossbow turns their bodies into compost. And so on, and so on. Horror films traffic in people paying for their sins. Most importantly, the genre redefines sinful behavior as time progresses and societies shift like tectonic plates. Those teens having sex and friends smoking weed fare better today than 40 years ago.
But the one transgression that horror consistently confronts? Generational sins. Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher continues the genre’s tradition in which older family members make momentary decisions with little or no regard for the future. And when push comes to shove, the past catches up to their progeny, leaving blood stains and residue in its wake.

From the minds of visionary filmmakers, this movie takes you on a suspense-filled ride, where fear lurks at every corner. Even more, the line between reality and the paranormal blurs. It’s safe to say that meticulous craftsmanship goes into crafting the spine-tingling scares and illusions that left audiences terrified. For a film like Paranormal Activity, not only the talented cast but also innovative techniques and cutting-edge equipment were used to drive the narrative. With that in mind, here is a...

Screen Gems has a new leader.
Ashley Brucks has been named president of the Sony film division, best known for its lower-budgeted genre and comedy fare.
The exec, coming in from Paramount where she served as an exec vp at studio label Paramount Players, steps into the shoes worn by Steve Bersch, who stepped down last week and retired after a 16-year stint at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Bersch oversaw several divisions, including faith-based Affirm Film, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Screen Gems. Brucks, who begins her post Nov. 13, will only lead the latter and will report to motion picture group president Josh Greenstein and Sanford Panitch. (Affirm will continue to be run by Rich Peluso and Spwa will still be headed by Joe Matukewicz. Instead of reporting into Bersch, the pair will now report into Greenstein and Panitch.)

Exclusive: Mad Solutions has acquired world sales rights to Egyptian director Amr Salama’s short film 60 Egyptian Pounds ahead of its world premiere as the opening film of the upcoming El Gouna Film Festival.
Salama is one of Egypt’s most popular directors with recent credits including Shahid-commissioned drama Bimbo, starring Ahmed Malek as a drug dealer-turned-detective; fantasy feature Bara El Manhag, Netlfix series Paranormal and Toronto hit Sheikh Jackson.
60 Egyptian Pounds grew out of Salama’s fascination and love of Egypt’s burgeoning hip-hop scene as well as desire to shed light on domestic abuse.
The short stars real-life Egyptian rap star Ziad Zaza, in his first big screen role, as a fictitious rapper with an abusive father, who takes it upon himself to end his family’s suffering once and for all.

It was a found-footage-stylized microbudget horror pic that spawned a six film theatrical franchise that grossed over $890M, now Paranormal Activity is set to be a play.
Deadline has confirmed that Simon Friend, the producer of the Broadway version of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, has taken the license on the Paramount/Blumhouse horror feature to set it up as a West End play.
Levi Holloway, the scribe of Broadway horror play Grey House, is currently writing Paranormal Activity for the stage.
Oren Peli wrote and directed the first pic, which centers around a family being haunted by a demon. The intrigue, much like the first Blair Witch Project, was the feeling that these horror movies could be real.
Friend’s stage adaptation productions include those of such pics The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards and three Tonys.

Get ready for Paranormal Activity, the stage play.
Simon Friend, the veteran producer who brought Life of Pi to Broadway, has picked up the license to the Paramount horror movie series with the intent of bringing it to the West End via his Simon Friend Entertainment.
Levi Holloway, who wrote the horror-tinged Broadway play Grey House, is on board to pen the stage adaptation, which is described as being in early development.
Created by Oren Peli, who wrote, directed, and shot the initial installment, Paranormal is a horror movie series focused, in most outings, on a family terrorized by a demon. The bulk of them were made between 2009 and 2015. The movies capitalized on the growing proliferation of video and cellphone cameras to tell spooky and jump-scare-filled tales to great effect.

Netflix is reshuffling its streaming offerings once again, and the latest round of movies set to leave the platform includes a few new horror classics. More specifically, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch in September, you'll have to cross Oren Peli's 2009 horror phenomenon "Paranormal Activity" off your to-watch list before then, as it's due to leave the streamer at the end of this month.
"Paranormal Activity" may not be the most enduringly scary horror touchstone of the past two decades (its slow burn scares were polarizing even upon initial release), but it's certainly among the most replicated. The shoestring-budget flick about a couple who set up security cameras to pinpoint the source of unusual happenings in their home was inescapable upon its release, earning nearly $200 million at the box office and spawning six sequels and spinoffs and counting. Along with J.J. Abrams' "Cloverfield," the film...

From "A Nightmare on Elm Street" to "Friday the 13th," "Hellraiser" to "Child's Play (aka Chucky)," '80s horror fans love a long-running franchise. While the 21st century doesn't have as many lengthy horror franchises per capita as the 1980s does, it still has a decent amount — and most of those are thanks to the efforts of one Jason Blum, Mr. Blumhouse himself.
Over the course of his career, Blum has sought to keep the traditions of vintage horror cinema alive not necessarily in the films themselves, but in broader ways. To wit, he's often found a lot of his films easily making their budgets back (and then some) at the box office; this year alone has seen "M3GAN" and "Insidious: The Red Door" hit the jackpot at cinemas, successes that are not only clear indicators of horror's continual popularity as a genre, but also Blum's savvy in keeping budgets low.

Image Nation Abu Dhabi and Spooky Pictures have teamed up to produce the horror film Late Night With the Devil, headed up by the Australian writing and directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) and starring David Dastmalchian – whose previous credits include The Boogeyman and The Suicide Squad. The film is currently making the festival rounds, and while it’s not yet known when a wider audience will have a chance to see it, our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a poster for it. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Late Night With the Devil is a “supernatural chiller” that tells the story of the live broadcast of a late-night talk show in 1977 that goes horribly wrong, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. Dastmalchian plays Jack Delroy, the host of the show Night Owls.

Discovery+ has nearly 100 series that it classifies as “Paranormal & Unexplained.” Some focus on cryptids, like Alaskan Killer Bigfoot or The Mothman Sightings. Others attempt to make sense of extraterrestrials, like The Visitors or Ancient Aliens. But an overwhelming majority of that particular category focuses on one thing: ghosts.
I used to be too scared to even consider that ghosts could be real. If ghosts were real, then they could be anywhere with who knows what kind of intentions! Horror stories have us believing that ghosts are always out to get us, but if they didn’t exist they couldn’t hurt me. But as my life has gone on, I can’t deny their existence. And now I know that the more we acknowledge that, the less vengeful they may be.

Horror fans, get ready for a new trip to the pet cemetery. Paramount+ has revealed the first look at the upcoming prequel to Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, titled Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The prequel will explore the origins of the cursed burial ground that brings back the dead, but not as they were before.
The first look image shows a brown dog walking on a dirt path in front of a sign that reads “Ludlow”. The dog is presumably one of the pets that will be buried and resurrected in the prequel, and the sign indicates that the story will take place in the same town as the original novel and its adaptations. The image has a vintage feel to it, suggesting that the prequel will be set in an earlier time period than the 2019 film.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is directed by Lindsey Beer, who is making her directorial debut.

If you’ve sought out any of Mark Polonia‘s previous microbudget (at best) horror releases, you know what quality ceiling to expect from Cocaine Shark. The movie costs as much as the animation to manipulate Cocaine Bear’s left paw for thirty seconds, maybe even less. Polonia’s signature is churning out poster-perfect titles like Amityville in Space or Sharkula with table-scrap resources, which only sometimes deliver as advertised. Cocaine Shark artwork features a ferocious Great White surrounded by bricks of floating white powder but narratively follows a story that aligns more with Joe Dante’s blink-and-miss laboratory creation in Piranha. It’s “Cocaine Shark” in name and marketing alone, undeniably zany with a less-financially-endowed Troma aroma, but ultimately uninteresting as dull dialogue dominates the seventy-minute duration.

Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

Cloverfield is up there with its predecessors, The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity, as one of the iconic found footage horror movies. We are only a matter of weeks into 2023, but a strong contender for the title of “scariest movie” in some folks’ minds has already emerged in Skinamarink. The idea of the “scariest movie ever,” i.e. a horror film that generates word-of-mouth buzz, might seem like a modern concept but it actually goes back nearly a century. One of the first examples can be traced back to 1932 and the tastefully titled Freaks, a movie centered around a beautiful trapeze artist who schemes to steal a side-show performer’s inheritance only to be thwarted by his deformed cohorts.
Featuring real life circus performers, the movie was drastically recut by MGM after test screenings in which several terrified audience members “got up and ran out.” Today, those kinds of reports would be worth their weight in gold, but back then they led to the 90-minute running time being slashed to just 64, with...

Horror, by its very nature, is an intimidating genre. For one thing, there's something about the promise of being scared that's part warning, part dare. After all, there's a long history of ballyhoo surrounding the genre, whether it's a barker getting people to attend a dark ride at a carnival or TV spots for "Paranormal Activity" showing real audience members scared out of their wits.
There's also another aspect to horror movies in particular being intimidating, that being the fact that there are so darn many of them. In a marketplace that is continually morphing and reinventing itself while paying homage to the past at the same time — we seem to be in a post-post-modern era where slasher movies are concerned, for example — it can be daunting to know where to begin. On a basic, literal level, there are now three separate movies entitled "Halloween" alone! What is a horror...

Sohn Koo-yong once again takes us on a journey into the Korean countryside after ‘A Walk’ (2017), Winter in Seoul (2018) and ‘Afternoon Landscape’ (2020). The Hankuk University of Foreign Studies graduate’s experimental film series explores an alternative ground for movie consumption- to aid in mindfulness and mental health well-being. And his latest effort is yet another stellar genre-defying addition to his previous lineup.
Night Walk is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The production is silent and monochrome. Shot over the director’s many hikes throughout the neighbourhood of Segeomjeong, it explores empty alleyways, glossy lakes, high-rise bungalows, and the jet-black forests surrounding the city, amongst others, offering up a marriage of urban and natural landscape scenes that transition from one to another with pregnant pauses in between. The flurry of images is accompanied by Koo-yong’s abstract line drawings and arresting poetry taken directly from the Seonbi of the Joseon dynasty.
