"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" remains one of the great TV shows, at least in part because of its supporting characters. The series boasted a supporting cast that became as popular and beloved as the titular slayer herself. Whether it's the Scoobies, David Boreanez's Angel, or the hugely-popular character that was originally supposed to be killed off early, Spike (James Marsters), one of the series' great strengths was the fact that its central character was, at least by the series' end, essentially one of many protagonists.
"Buffy" debuted on the WB back in 1997, but by 1999 Angel had proven popular enough to get his own spin-off, with "Angel" airing on the same network that year. In that first season of the spin-off show, Buffy's former beau is joined by Eliza Dushku's Faith, another slayer who was "called" following the death of Kendra, yet another slayer "called" after Buffy temporarily died in season one.

Have you ever bought something impulsively and realized that you probably should have thought it through? I know I have. But, I’m just a nobody, I’m not a major network that can pour thousands upon thousands of dollars into a TV show before they think it through. Networks can make some boneheaded moves. I can see some shows that would make you question the intelligence of network executives. Hell, I covered one of my “what were they thinking” shows in a past episode – Cop Rock!
But unlike those other shows, the show I want to talk about was actually good! It’s just that it wound up causing the network a lot of headaches. I am talking about an excellent Joss Whedon little-known project called Dollhouse. This show was awesome. It had amazing actors, great action, and insane twists. But it also touched on some pretty icky themes...

It lasted only one season, but fans still mourn the demise of the sci-fi/western Firefly. As much as we love watching (and rewatching) the series, sometimes it's not enough.
Are you longing for a little more Captain Tight Pants? Want to see Zoe quietly kick some adversary's butt? Wishing you could revisit the Hero of Canton?
Well, we can't bring back Firefly -- oh, how we wish we could! -- but we can tell you where you can tune in to see the cast now.
If you can't get enough of the crew of the Serenity, read on to find out where you can see them now.
Ron Glass - Shepherd Derrial Book
Shepherd Book was the preacher with a cryptic past who boards the Serenity and befriends its crew. We loved Book's warmth and acceptance of his other crew members while still being able to hold onto his faith.

If you expected “Gen V” to be as subversive, perverse and brilliant as “The Boys,” only more sophomoric, you won’t be disappointed.
Prime Video’s college-set spin-off of TV’s smartest, sickest superhero show brings adolescent angst to the paranoid world powered by the chemical/military/supes entertainment conglomerate, Vought International. The show is centered on young people who were dosed at birth with the company’s extra-human abilities generating Compound V studying at Godolkin University. Everyone calls the place God U, where they either major in crime fighting or brand management.
Extracurricular concerns include social media notoriety, gender dysphoria, lost siblings, cutting, bulimia, suicide and the perennial parents who suck (as do most other adults). “Gen V” puts sci-fi spins on these and other youth-adjacent issues, which generates kooky but sometimes clever and resonant metaphors.

Disney CEO Bob Iger may be neck-deep in negotiations with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) this week, but his employees at Hulu continue to have an eye on saving the company money on his behalf. A new report from Vulture indicates that a large swath of classic TV series are leaving Hulu at the end of this month, including some shows that fans of ’90s TV will recognize instantly.
The good news in this latest round of cuts from Hulu is that it appears to be isolated to these shows, at least for now. Vulture reports that unlike content removals which occurred earlier this summer for Disney streamers, this latest batch is not intended as part of larger cost-cutting measures intended to bring immediate relief to the bottom line; rather, the shows being removed are coming to the end of their licensing agreements, and Disney has simply decided to...

Science fiction fans remember the last four months of 2002 as a blessed but bedeviled time. "Firefly" became a 14-episode phenomenon, dead in the water before the season ended, but eternal in the hearts of its viewers. Their passion managed the impossible, reviving the show for a big-screen send-off in "Serenity" and several canonical comic book miniseries. To this day, crafters knit their own loving reconstructions of Jayne's remarkably orange hat. A Malcolm Reynolds -- or five -- can be found at any Sf convention, or recreated in video games by players aiming to misbehave.

Chris Hemsworth is taking over another spot on Netflix’s most popular films list.
After 66 days, Extraction 2 has cracked the list at No. 10, knocking Spenser Confidential off and falling in line right under its predecessor, Extraction. This makes it the first film franchise to chart two films on the most popular list simultaneously, and it’s the third Agbo film on the list overall.
So far, Extraction 2 has racked up 129.3M views, and it still has about 25 days of viewing left in its premiere measurement window. The first installment sits at 135.7M views for its entire 91-day window, which means there’s a strong possibility that the sequel could end up outranking the original when all is said and done.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has officially arrived to turn the rest of the summer pink, just like Lizzo’s song that kicks off the film’s soundtrack. The “Barbie” album is available on vinyl, and it includes a collection of some of pop culture’s most-talked-about musical artists, perfect for the contemporary take on Mattel’s 63-year-old toy. The Blacklist — Pictured: Harry Lennix as Harold Cooper — (Photo by: Will Hart/NBC) Harry Lennix is one of the few cast members of The Blacklist to have been a series regular from the very start, along with James Spader and Diego Klattenhoff. Now that the show has wrapped — it will end with a two-hour series finale next week — it’s been a big change for Lennix. After all, prior to The Blacklist his longest-running job had been the two-season, 26-episode run of Dollhouse. But The Blacklist, of course, has run for 10 seasons and ultimately produced 218 episodes. And that longevity, Lennix told us, plays a big part in why he will miss this show differently than any other job he’s had. The Weeknd’s controversial, 5-episode show The Idol is over. And with it, viewers of the HBO series got to hear Troye Sivan reimagine “My Sweet Lord,” the beloved, guitar-backed 1970 song by Beatle George Harrison, during the final episode.
Sivan’s sweet vocals hum and echo over a haunting, synthy organ as he sings the Harrison lyrics: “Really want to go with you/Really want to show you Lord/But it won’t take long, my Lord.” The track is very Xo-esque, thanks to its production by Mike Dean and the Weeknd himself.

In February 2013, Dreamworks Animation Television teamed with Netflix on its first-ever children’s and family series, Turbo Fast. Just four months later, the studio and streamer would unveil a multiyear content deal — 300 hours of exclusive original, first-run content.
The pact was the official beginning of the television animation studio and at that time, the largest content deal in the streamer’s history. One of the most significant signs of the rise and permanence of the streaming era, the deal heralded a new age for the kids and family content industry.
Dreamworks Animation TV and current Dwa president Margie Cohn’s team would spend the next decade steering the studio through that and an NBC Universal acquisition, producing more than 2,100 episodes of animated programming across 43 series and partnering with Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Amazon and free-to-air broadcasters around the globe.

Series finales are fickle things. Some of them have the power to redeem an entire show, to reframe the audience’s perceptions of what came before. Those massive twists rarely land, so more often than not, TV shows end not with a bang, but with a melancholy whimper.
And then there are the other times when a big series finale swing goes so awry that it can undo many seasons’ worth of goodwill. Recency bias rears its ugly head and some lifelong fans use these last episodes as a reason to sour on a particular show.
That’s why that the best finales don’t always come from the best shows. “Battlestar Galactica,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Dexter,” and more often reached brilliance over the course of their runs, but rang less true with their final notes. Some of IndieWire’s choices below come from shows that wouldn’t...

Liz Craft and Sarah Fain have been working and writing together since they were fifteen. In television, they have partnered as writers and producers on several major network shows like The Fix, Lie To Me, and Dollhouse.
They are the dynamic duo behind the Fox hit revival of Fantasy Island, which has just finished its second season with an emotional and satisfying finale.
Speaking with TV Fanatic over Zoom (Days before the unfortunate news of the show's cancellation), the pair are as in sync discussing their show as they are in producing the whimsical yet thought-provoking series.
While the Fantasy Island IP has undergone a couple of revivals/reboots since the original series concluded in 1984, this is the first that truly builds on the legacy of Ricardo Montalban and his wish-granting domain.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
With Amityville Vanishing Point unavailable to stream or buy in Canada, I’ve had to leap frog over it and go directly to 2016’s The Amityville Legacy (aka Amityville Toybox).
Co-written and co-directed by Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson (file away the former: he’ll return several times in the future), the 15th Amityville film is another low-budget, independent effort. All of the characters have the same first name as the actor playing them, and the performances are often amateurish. Namely the film’s visual aesthetic is flat and the audio quality is poor, particularly in early scenes set in cars. The plot recycles the events of both the original and the remake, with a father who goes mad and kills his family,...

Singer, songwriter, and producer Melanie Martinez makes sleek, dark pop with a satiric edge and real emotional bite. Martinez debuted with her fantastic 2015 LP Cry Baby, a concept album about a young girl who gets kidnapped and eventually kills her captor that’s full of sparkling, self-aware tunes like “Pacify Her” and “Dollhouse.” She followed it with 2019’s K-12, as well as a feature film of the same name, building a devoted cult following in the process. Martinez has come a long way from being the hopeful teenager who made...

Maximilian Osinski makes a big splash in season three of "Ted Lasso" as Zava, a soccer superstar with a big ego - but maybe a big heart to match. AFC Richmond brings him in to try to keep the team from getting relegated - and to one-up West Ham, owned by the villainous Rupert (Anthony Head) and coached by Nate (Nick Mohammed). But what fans might not know is that Osinski is married to an actor who's making splashes on an Apple TV+ series of her own: Dichen Lachman, who plays Ms. Casey on the hit series "Severance." On "Severance," Lachman's Ms. Casey is a mysterious employee at Lumon Industries who, fans learn in the season finale, is tied to a deep secret the company is keeping from Mark S (Adam Scott).
Osinski and Lachman married in 2015 and share a daughter born that same year. Both have been working actors for a long time.

Alternative pop artist Melanie Martinez is just a few weeks away from releasing her third studio album, and her fans couldn’t be more excited. Martinez has built a successful career in the music industry, but she might not be where she is today without The Voice, where she got her start. As we wait for her new album to drop, let’s take a look at the audition that started it all and how far she made it on NBC’s singing competition.

The last direct-to-video entry before the big budget theatrical remake, Amityville: Dollhouse adopts the same format as the last few films without contributing much new to the mix. By this point, the formula is fixed: take a haunted object that is tangentially tied to the original Long Island house, throw a dysfunctional family into the mix, and whip up a variety of bizarre events. Dollhouse follows this to a tee: it’s not bad, but the film is the least inspired entry to date, with an odd collection of half-baked ideas that don’t really come together to form a cohesive whole.

Starz is developing a sequel to its historical drama series “Spartacus.” Steven S. DeKnight, who created the original series, will serve as showrunner and executive producer of the new series.
“Spartacus” was inspired by the story of the gladiator of the same name who incited a massive slave rebellion against Rome in the year 73 BC. Per the logline, the sequel series will be set after the defeat of Spartacus and his revolution, depicting “a new tale of treachery, deceit and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.”
The original show debuted in 2010, with Season 1 carrying the title “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” Starz then debuted a prequel limited series, “Spartacus: Gods of the Arena,” in 2011, before producing two more seasons of the flagship titled “Vengeance” (2012) and “War of the Damned” (2013).

Joss Whedon is apparently not a good person. You've heard this, we've heard this, everyone has heard this. Another thing that everyone knows is how deeply ingrained he is not only in popular culture but in successful and beloved popular culture. Whedon's writing credits include "Toy Story," "Firefly," and "Marvel's Avengers." His directing credits include the latter of those two projects, as well as "The Office" and "Glee." See what we're saying? Before Hollywood realized that he was a financial taboo, Whedon was everywhere.
You'll notice, too, that his credits often came in clumps. Whedon tended to serve as both writer and director on his projects. The man valued his creative control, wherever he could find it. So it might be surprising, then, to know that he valued the opposite for his service to "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," a series for which he is credited as a co-creator and an executive producer.

That ’70s Show has been a popular favorite since it debuted in 1998. While the sitcom aired, another teen-focused drama ran alongside it — Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While the series didn’t have a lot in common, both were very popular with the target audience. And they even featured a few of the same actors.

The world of "Planet of the Apes" continues to grow, and the latest film has just cast Dichen Lachman in an undisclosed role, per The Hollywood Reporter. These days Lachman is most recognizable for her turn as the mysterious corporate counselor Ms. Casey on the excellent Apple TV+ series "Severance," but she's been a stand-out in sci-fi projects in particular for years now, with memorable turns in "The 100," "Dollhouse," "Altered Carbon," and more. She also appeared in last year's blockbuster "Jurassic World Dominion."
While Lachman's part in the story is still under wraps, THR's report also includes some plot details for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and the story frankly sounds pretty wild. But cancers a bitch, and his life was cut too short,” she shared. “He’s been quietly battling for the past 5 years, this whole time, directing, working, fighting, and smiling through it. In January 2020, FX made the bold decision to renew “American Horror Story” for three more installments — Season 11, Season 12 and Season 13. That ensures its flagship horror anthology series, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, will be on our TV screens through at least the year 2024. Scary good! After the 10th season (otherwise known as “American Horror Story: Double Feature”) was delayed for an entire year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hollywood productions have now somewhat returned to normalcy, and the next cycle of “AHS” will air in Fall 2022.

Congrats, everyone! We’ve finally made it to another spooky season. To celebrate, Netflix is highlighting its best horror content on its list of new releases for October 2022.
It wouldn’t be October on Netflix without a new Mike Flanagan title. Thankfully the Midnight Mass showrunner returns with The Midnight Club on Oct. 7. This series, adapted from a book of the same name, takes place in a hospice for terminally ill teens who have all made a gruesome pact. This series will be followed up by other creepy TV titles like Unsolved Mysteries Vol. 3 on Oct. 18, 28 Days Haunted on Oct. 21, and most importantly: Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Oct. 25, which will collect eight terrifying stories from the famed director himself.

FX’s long-running horror anthology “American Horror Story” is such a megahit that in 2021, a spin-off series streamed on Hulu titled “American Horror Stories.” Unlike the parent show, “Stories” offers up different plots and cast members each and every week (think “Black Mirror” only with ghosts and zombies). Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the program has received two Emmy nominations. The second edition of “Stories” premiered July 21, 2022 on Hulu and streams one episode per week throughout the summer.
In addition to dozens of fresh cast members, several recognizable “AHS” alumni appear in the new episodes, including Denis O’Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, Max Greenfield, Cody Fern, Seth Gabel, Nico Greetham and Teddy Sears. Scroll down to see the “American Horror Stories” Season 2 cast photos. This year’s episode titles are “Dollhouse,” “Aura,” “Drive,” “Milkmaids,” “Bloody Mary,” “Facelift,” “Necro” and “Lake.”...
