No one would disagree that the premise was excellent and original (good bad cop in one). But when it comes to the show as a whole I have to disagree about everything ! Simply it seems like "Let's put all the filthiness, the fierceness, and the nudity on TV and under the name of Realism!". The American TV cop drama used to be, at its boldest, nothing as gross-out and harsh heavily like this one. But from historical point of view, it was so natural to have this show at 2002. Because after age of vivid, sexy and coy TV at the 1980s (The nice private investigators, the outrageously rich soap operas, the supermachine craze, etc..), there must be an age of bloody, nasty, and lewd TV at the 1990s, just contemplate well the marks : Twin Peaks (1990), Seinfeld (1990), The Jerry Springer Show (1991), The X Files (1993), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), That '70s Show (1998), and near the end we had Sex and The City (1998), CSI (2000). So, on this scale it's logical to have The Shield (2002), then Nip-Tuck (2003), Dexter (2006), and whatever new in the field of being nasty for nastiness and don't lecture me about Realism anymore, because according to The Shield' own status it became so horrible to watch as just pure ugly images all the time that challenge themselves what could be awfully terrible and was never shown yet, to be shown immediately. It turned into a visual dictionary in all what can make you vomit, be shocked, .. and I don't think that is for being nobly unprecedented factual inasmuch as being unprecedented commercial !. (Michael Chiklis) himself, the best point here, is one big irony that can summarize the case; from one side he was that so ideal childish cop in The Commish (1991), so after 10 years of transforming (the global taste, the production mentality, the violence boost on TV..) he got to be Detective Vic Mackey with all the meanings of the name, though from another side did the drama help this character to be something as different as it is? Well, the main plot has gone too far to stand along the way, stretching in unbelievably boring manner to 7 whole years and unbearable trite limit. Add to that, a DAMN DAMN DAMN shaking camera, OH MY GOD, since (NYPD Blue) I had enough of this absolute stupidity already, it gave me incredible migraine, eye exhaustion, and such a big haze ! Nevertheless you'll find it here again and continuously in galling and meaningless so-called style ! Then put into the mix the most disgusting language ever, and the pointless feel of the whole thing, to have one hit that defines the 2000s powerfully, as an era that succeeded in being undreamy, more flagrant, more dirty, to atrocious extent. It's the anti-anything lovely you've seen before in any TV drama (especially at the 1980s), but aside from that, what else it prevailed in?. Actually, come to think of it; did The Shield reach to something beyond being just atrocious ?.
