There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Exclusive: Lifetime has begun production on four new movies based on V.C. Andrews’ Casteel Family book series, all for premiere on the cable network this year. They are among 75 films planned on the network for 2019 as part of an ambitious slate.
Last summer, under new A+E Networks CEO Paul Buccieri, Lifetime made a change in its programming strategy, putting emphasis back on original movies and using them as backdoor pilots over traditional series development.
Lifetime announced last year it was developing five films based on Andrews’ last known book series, about the twisted relationships of the Casteel Family. The first, Heaven, was filmed last year, and you can watch the first-look trailer above. The remaining four are Dark Angel, Fallen Hearts, Gates of Paradise and Web of Dreams. Travel hither and yon and it’s probably only once in a great long while that you come across someone like Tim Blake Nelson. Frankly, he doesn’t look all that impressive. Ebbing hairline, a wide-open-plains-type forehead, blues that seem almost beady, a top right central incisor that stands disturbingly aloof of its neighbor, and an oddball horseshoe mustache. He’s lank bordering on gaunt, well abbreviated in height, and the altogether effect is of the kind of guy you see on inner-city street corners, scratching his head while waiting to be mugged.

No doubt that grief counselors across America are getting calls or texts over the fact that The Big Bang Theory — the TV show that put the cool into geek — is ending after its forthcoming 12th season concludes next May. Making it even tougher to deal with is the fact that it's not leaving because of low ratings (it continues to reside right around the top of the charts) or a lack of creative ideas (you'd be hard-pressed to find another sitcom that adapted and changed as much as this one has over the years), but reportedly due to actor Jim Parsons — our very own Dr. Sheldon Cooper — being ready to move on. And not, it should be emphasized, because of money. In fact, CBS has been pretty open about wanting to keep the show on and had begun negotiating for an additional two seasons. Things had gotten to the point...

When the now-beloved children’s book The Story of Ferdinand was first published in 1936, some grownups were worried that it might have a bad influence on children. Apparently its sweet, simple story — from writer Munro Leaf, with instantly iconic illustrations by Robert Lawson — was seen as promoting (take your pick) pacifism, fascism, communism, and/or anarchism. It may well be the nicest alien invasion ever, when the blobby Boov come to planet Earth in their adorable bubble spaceships. They’re hiding out from a nasty, spiky predator and they mean us no harm, but we are thoughtlessly and inconveniently occupying their new cities, so the entire human race gets evacuated — in an involuntary way — to Australia, to a new settlement that looks rather like Truman Burbank’s hometown of Seahaven. Pleasant on the surface, perhaps, but definitely with an undercurrent of creepy, even apart from the whole alien-invasion thing.
How do seven billion humans feel about this?...

Steve Martin is joining the cast of director Ang Lee's war drama Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.
Newcomer Joe Alwyn leads the film as a soldier whose unit is brought back to the Us temporarily after surviving an attack in Iraq.
The soldiers are given a celebration at a Dallas Cowboys football game, before being sent back into service in Iraq.
Martin has been cast as a slippery Hollywood producer who attempts to buy the film rights to Billy Lynn's (Alwyn) story, reports The Wrap.
Garrett Hedlund has already been cast as Lynn's drill instructor, while Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire writer Simon Beaufoy will adapt Ben Fountain's novel for the screen.
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk will be Martin's first live-action film role since 2011's critically-panned bird-watching comedy The Big Year.

Later this year, we'll hear Steve Martin as the voice of the alien leader Captain Smek in the DreamWorks Animation film Home. Otherwise, it's been a few years since the actor appeared in a live-action film with The Big Year in 2011 being his last comedy appearance on the big screen. But that will change soon as Deadline reports Matin has taken a role in Ang Lee's next film, an adaptation of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, based on Ben Fountain's novel of the same name. Newcomver Joe Alwyn and Garrett Hedlund are already on board to star in the film about the heroic survivors of a battle in the Iraq War. Steve Martin is in negotiations with Disney to star in a family comedy called Magic Camp that he co-wrote with Stu Zicherman, the writer and director of A.C.O.D. I am a huge fan of Martin, and I enjoy his writing style. The original script was written by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, who also wrote Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
According to THR, the story tells of "a straitlaced banker who returns to Magic Camp, which he attended as a shy child. This time he is a counselor who makes it his mission to improve the lives of all the kids while keeping an eye on his ultimate prize, the top spot at the Golden Wand competition."
This is the perfect project for Martin, as one of his early jobs was working at Merlin's Magic Shop at Disneyland. He was also a magician in his early days as a comedian.

It’s been a while since Steve Martin has dipped a toe into the waters of family comedy – we’re not counting The Big Year – but while DreamWorks Animation has him set for voice duties in next year’s Home, Disney wants him back in front of the camera for Magic Camp. The Mouse House is developing the comedy based on a draft by Gave Sachs and Jeff Judah, which was recently re-written by Martin and Stu Zicherman.Martin is now close to a deal to star as a straight-laced banker who returns to the magic summer camp he attended as a shy child. This time, he’s a counsellor who decides he’s going to make the current attendees’ lives that much better while keeping one eye on winning the Golden Wand competition. It’s up the actor’s alley, since he had a job working in Disneyland’s Magic Shop as a youngster,...

Where in the world has Steve Martin been lately? The celebrated comic actor’s last big screen role was in the ill-received birding comedy The Big Year way back in 2011, and the only project he’s taken on since has been animated caper Home, in which he lends his voice to an alien. Luckily, it appears that Martin may be making a comeback, with word that he’s in talks to star in Magic Camp for Disney.
The actor was already involved with the family comedy, having penned the most recent draft of the script with A.C.O.D. writer-director Stu Zicherman (currently a writer-producer on FX’s Cold War-era spy drama The Americans). The previous version of the script came from Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the duo behind Diary of a Wimpy Kid and its sequel. The pair are still on board with Magic Camp as producers, despite Disney feeling...

Steve Martin is set to headline a new live-action family comedy from Walt Disney Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Martin, who was last on the big screen in 2011's The Big Year, will play the leading role in Magic Camp, originally scripted by Diary of a Wimpy Kid's Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs and recently rewritten by A.C.O.D. writer/director Stu Zicherman.

Steve Martin is looking to familiar ground for an upcoming project; the actor is in talks to star in the Disney feature film Magic Camp. Martin’s first job was actually working at the Main Street Magic Shop at Disneyland; so this sounds like a passion project for the man. He also co-wrote the recent draft of the script with writer/director Stu Zicherman (A.C.O.D.). It would be nice to have Martin return the screen; his last effort was 2011's The Big Year; I can’t...

Birds are fascinating creatures. This is true, but most people take birds for granted, so many of them flying about overhead. Birds are everywhere, and as creepy as that thought may be to some, they are always watching over us, constant spectators of the human experience below. Her on planet Earth, we go though life struggling primarily to answer two questions… who am i and what should I do with this life i have?
It’s no wonder there are some drawn in by a fascination for these feathered friends of ours. Those who watch, track and seek out birds of all species are generally referred to as “birders.” The term’s definition may be argued by some, including those in the film A Birder’S Guide To Everything. Directed and co-written by Rob Meyer, this film is a coming of age story about an awkward 15-year old boy named David Portnoy.

Bird is the Word: Meyer’s Debut a Well Meaning But Slight Observation
Bird watching seems to be something of a recent cinematic inspiration, though has yet to show much potential in the narrative realm thus far, with David Frankel’s 2011 comedic misfire The Big Year now joined by Rob Meyer’s directorial debut, A Birder’s Guide to Everything. Grappling with loss, strained familial relationships, and coming of age essence, various dilemmas congeal into a mostly light-hearted effort that seems to feel genuinely about its cluster of characters, even though, beyond the crux of its protagonists’ snazzy and oft unexplored hobby, Meyer and his cast can never mold the narrative into anything more than a standard affair. A few acute observations aside, it’s a slight film that feels most effective when utilizing the heavy hitters in its supporting cast.

“The Brink" dark comedy has been given a series order from HBO, reports Variety. Jay Roach directed the pilot, which stars Jack Black and Tim Robins. Kim and Roberto Benabib write with Black playing Alex Coppins, a Foreign Service officer who gets caught in the middle of everything. Robbins plays U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander who has no patience for warmongers. Roberto Benabib is also serving as executive producer alongside Jerry Weintraub and Jay Roach. Black was in the effective "Bernie" comedy drama / crime flick of 2011, as well as "The Big Year" bird watching comedy (which wasn't half bad actually). He's up next in "Sex Tape" from director Jake Kasdan, which opens July 25th, 2014, and also includes Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper and Rob Lowe.

Voodoo has always been a creepy subject, and a popular choice for horror films, perhaps most notably with the classic (and first) White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi as an evil voodoo master. Now, the misunderstood religion finds itself in the spotlight once again, with FX’s hit American Horror Story: Coven. But that’s not the only horror property delving into the Haitian religion. Allow me to introduce you to Walter Boholst’s horror film Voodoo Possession, out today, January 14th, on VOD platforms. Despite the over the top name, the film actually has complicated themes (and Danny Trejo), and isn’t a straight riff on the wacky voodoo doll tropes of bad horror movies. I recently got a chance to talk with actor and star Ryan Caltagirone (The Flip Side, The Big Year), who plays the tortured protagonist Aiden Chase in the film.

Marc and Brenda Lhormer are the Founders and current Heads of this wonderful event which we have attended, and worked at in various roles, since its beginning.
I always use this Fest when speaking as the best model of a regional Film Festival that I know. In other words I find it a perfect blending of high current level film culture, works and people from the biz and film production world with a community that is film centric, loyal and always hospitable to us 'outsiders'.
May I also add that personally the Northern California Wine Country (which the Fest uses superbly!!) is one of my favorite places anywhere for many years now.
I look forward to attending and supporting this great event this coming up version, November 13 – 17.
From their official announcement -

With Man of Steel just a week away, the major studios opted to avoid releasing any of their heavy-hitters this weekend. At 3,365 locations, Wedding Crashers stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson team up again for The Internship, though the Google-centric premise isn't nearly as appealing as that of their previous collaboration. As a result, first place will likely go to low-budget high-concept horror flick The Purge, which is playing at 2,536 theaters and should wind up with over $20 million. Eight years ago, Wedding Crashers translated great word-of-mouth in to a $209.3 million domestic haul, which made it one of the highest-grossing R-rated comedies ever. Vince Vaughn followed that up with a string of hits, including The Break-Up ($118.7 million), Four Christmases ($120.1 million) and Couples Retreat ($109.2 million). Things were a bit tougher for Owen Wilson, though he did have a major success with Marley and Me ($143.2 million). In the last few years, though, both...

A lot of people are looking forward to seeing "The Internship" for a couple of key reasons: it's the first movie to reunite "Wedding Crashers" co-stars Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, and it has unprecedented footage of the famed Google campus in Mountain View, California.
The film is even being referred to as "The Google Movie" in many circles because of the level the tech giant was involved in production. It served as a consultant, and allowed extensive filming at its campus. While not all of the "Google" scenes were actually filmed at Google, the company's stamp is reportedly all over the movie, with its trademark culture on full display.
"The Internship" follows two middle-aged salesmen (Wilson and Vaughn) who score coveted internships at Google to prove that they're not irrelevant in today's tech-dominated world. Naturally, hilarious antics ensue as they try to compete with young tech-savvy whippersnappers.

Sometimes fiction is more true than truth. And then there are those stories that can only work because they are true, because whatever unsettling human realities they have to share would be difficult to take in a fictional story: you simply couldn’t set up an invented tale that takes the same twists and turns and be plausible at the same time. But when it all really happened, who are we to argue with reality? We can only shake our heads at it, and how human beings actual behave in their natural environments. This is true. In rural east Texas in the 1990s, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was the most beloved man in the town of Carthage. All the “dear little old ladies” had crushes on him, we learn. “Bernie was a very loving man, a charismatic person.” We hear these things via documentary-style talking-head interviews that open the film,...

But gaining entrance to this utopia is only half the battle. Now they must compete with a group of the nation’s most elite, tech-savvy geniuses to prove that necessity really is the mother of re-invention. Star of Tower Heist joined by Reese Witherspoon and Katherine Heigl in 2012 breakdown of underperformers at the box office
Well-known Hollywood figures Eddie Murphy, Katherine Heigl and Reese Witherspoon have suffered the indignity of being named top of Forbes magazine's annual list of the most overpaid actors in the world.
Murphy, who was commanding $20m a movie around the turn of the millennium, returns just $2.30 for every $1 he is paid, according to Forbes. Such meagre financial clout means he is considered the most overpaid actor in Hollywood in 2012, with the news coming on the back of flops such as Meet Dave and Imagine That. Even his 2011 critical hit Tower Heist, which was seen as something of a comeback vehicle for the Beverly Hills Cop star, was not a resounding box-office smash, earning $152m on a $75m production budget.
Second place on the list goes to newcomer Heigl, who is said...

From the brain of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, Ted is as irreverant and outrageous as the TV series.
The comedy movie follows John Bennett, whose beloved teddy bear comes to life when John’s a boy. Fast forward 20-odd years and John (Mark Wahlberg, The Fighter) is still living with his teddy bear, Ted, who has become a foul-mouthed, hard-partying bear who loves his bong.
Clean up after one particularly nasty night of Ted’s partying, John’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis, Friends With Benefits) gives him an ultimatum: The bear or me. But living without each other could prove too difficult for Ted and John.
The R-rated film was directed and co-written by MacFarlane, who also voiced the bear. The movie also stars Joel McHale (The Big Year), Giovanni Ribisi (Contraband), Patrick Warburton (Men in Black II...

Now, this is an interesting twist on a film genre. Seeing the poster, you might think that Celeste And Jesse Forever is another frothy, lighthearted ” rom-com”. You’d be mistaken. This could be called an anti ” rom-com”. Well most of these flicks are about the two main characters meeting cute, having conflict, resolving said conflict and living happily ever after, Celeste is about a couple who’ve been through all that and then fall out of love. It’s the ” ever after”. The big romance is pretty much covered with a photo montage during the title and opening credits. Ah, but you think ” These two are so adorable, they must work things out”. I won’t say if they do, but I will say that this flick is full of surprises. Kind of like real life, as opposed to movie ” rom-com life.
As I said, by the time the opening credits are done,...

I would love to know how "Hope Springs" got made. Sure, David Frankel's had a few hits now. "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Marley & Me" were both down-the-middle studio hits, but his last film, "The Big Year," barely got a release. It's a shame, too. It's not a great film, but it's a nice, gentle character piece that featured a restrained, charming performance by Jack Black and strong work by Steve Martin. Hard film to sell, though, no matter how it all plays in context, because it's not really loaded with the sorts of moments studios count on to help...

The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
Just like both versions of I Spit On Your Grave arrived on Blu-ray at the same time, both the 1946 and 1981 versions of The Postman Always Rings Twice got the same treatment.
The first adaptation of James M. Cain‘s novel stars Lana Turner (The Bad and the Beautiful) and John Garfield (Gentleman’s Agreement) as a married woman and a drifter who fall in love then conspire to murder the woman’s husband. Of course, there are always consequences.
Tay Garnett (The Delta Factor) directed the 1946 film, which was written by Harry Ruskin (The Great Guy) and Niven Busch (Duel in the Sun).
The 1981 version was directed by Bob Rafelson (Five Easy Pieces) from a script by thriller guru David Mamet (TV’s The Unit). Jack Nicholson (Chinatown) and Jessica Lange (Cape Fear) took over the starring duties,...

With Bernie, Black joins the pantheon of maddeningly annoying actors who stop being annoying – even if only for one film
Nothing is more heart-wrenching for the professional curmudgeon than the delightful new movie starring that actor the curmudgeon dislikes. I know many people who cannot stomach Tom Cruise, yet grudgingly had to admit he was pretty good in Collateral, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder and Rock of Ages.
I also know people who dislike Mickey Rourke enormously, but have felt morally bound to concede he was fabulous in The Wrestler. (These tend to be people who never saw him in Diner, the film that seemed to presage a brilliant career which never materialised.) The same thing has happened over the years – both to me and to close friends – with Matthew Broderick (generally horrible, but wonderful in Election), Reese Witherspoon (too perky for words, but superb in Legally Blonde and Election) and Jennifer Aniston (usually quite awful,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended their 2012 membership invitations today to 176 lucky actors, directors, cinematographers, and other members of the filmmaking industry.
Terrence Malick, who somehow wasn’t already a member, received an invitation, as did fellow directors Rodrigo Garcia and Asghar Farhadi.
For actors, Melissa McCarthy’s invitation continues her incredible post-Bridesmaids rise. In addition, actors Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Andy Serkis, Jessica Chastain, and Octavia Spencer were all invited to be members, among others.
Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003, according to the Academy’s website.
