As this slow broadcast network pilot season continues, ABC has ordered its second comedy pilot of the year: “Forgive and Forget,” a multi-camera comedy set to star Emmy-winning “Modern Family” alum Ty Burrell.
Burrell is also on board as an executive producer (through his Desert Whale Prods. shingle) on “Forgive and Forget,” while Eugene Garcia-Cross is writer/exec producer and Robin Shorr is on board as showrunner and exec producer. 20th Television is behind the project, which stars Burrell as Hank, a perennial “life of the party.” According to the logline, Hank gets an unexpected diagnosis, leading him to reconnect with his responsible adult son Ben.
ABC has also ordered the comedy pilot “Shifting Gears,” starring Tim Allen, for this season. That means both of the network’s comedy pilots are multi-camera sitcoms from 20th TV starring veteran ABC stars.

It’s no secret that Christina Applegate is suffering these days. Her multiple sclerosis symptoms make everything difficult. As she told Vanity Fair in May, “With the disease of Ms, it’s never a good day. You just have little shitty days. People are like, ‘Well, why don’t you take more showers?’ Well, because getting in the shower is frightening. You can fall, you can slip, your legs can buckle. Especially because I have a glass shower. It’s frightening to me to get in there. There are just certain things that people take for granted in their lives that I took for granted. Going down the stairs, carrying things—you can’t do that anymore. It f-ing sucks. I can still drive my car short distances. I can bring up food to my kid. Up, never down.”
She continued, “Yeah, and gravity can just pull you down and take everything down with you.

“Poker Face” fan-favorite Natasha Lyonne received a Best Comedy Actress Emmy nomination this year alongside Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”). As of this writing, Lyonne is in last place to win at Gold Derby, with less than 3% of our prognosticators backing her. However, the fact that she recently gained the favor of the Television Critics Association proves she should be taken much more seriously. Are we underestimating her at the 2023 Emmys?
Given Lyonne’s status as the very first regular acting Emmy nominee from any Peacock program and her show’s absence from all other major categories, her doubters initially had a leg to stand on, but that isn’t the case anymore. Her TCA Award victory for Individual Achievement in Comedy is an undeniably big deal and gives her many statistical advantages that should cause her competitors and naysayers concern.

Christina Applegate was the guest of honor at Variety TV Fest in Los Angeles on June 7. The actor accepted the TV legacy award at the event, which marked one of her few public appearances since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (Ms) in 2021. Jean Smart, who portrayed Applegate's onscreen mother in the ABC sitcom "Samantha Who?," presented her with the accolade in front of a crowd that also included stars like Niecy Nash, Elle Fanning, and Kerry Washington. Applegate then delivered an emotional speech addressing the future of her four-decade Hollywood career.
"I miss it so much. I just don't know."
After briefly reflecting on acting alongside Smart, Applegate acknowledged how Ms will affect her ability to get in front of the camera again. Holding back tears, she said, "I hate it so much, but thank you so much for being supportive and understanding as I journey through this new part...

Christina Applegate was very intentional about who stood at the podium last November when she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Watching from the crowd with her husband and daughter at her side, Applegate heard remarks from her other family — “Married… With Children” co-stars Katey Sagal and David Faustino, and her “Dead to Me” support system, co-star Linda Cardellini and creator/writer Liz Feldman.
For Applegate, the foursome represents the full breadth of her 40-year career in Hollywood.
“There was no mistake as to who I asked to speak, kind of my beginning and my…,” she hesitates for the moment, editing her thoughts in real time, before she continues, “…my possible end. That was really important to me. It was about where I came from and where I landed.”

Although Edie Falco’s Emmy Awards history began with a successful Best Drama Actress bid for “The Sopranos” in 1999, she has since racked up more comedy nominations than drama ones. After receiving a comedy guest notice for “30 Rock” in 2008, she earned half a dozen lead ones for “Nurse Jackie” between 2010 and 2015, the first of which led to a win. Now, as a Best Comedy Supporting Actress contender for Peacock’s “Bupkis,” she could become the eighth entrant on the list of women who have earned recognition in every possible comedy Emmy category.
After “Nurse Jackie,” “Bupkis” is only the second comedy series on which Falco has played a regular role. Her character, Amy Davidson, is a fictionalized version of series star Pete Davidson’s own mother, who raised him and his younger sister as a single parent after her husband died during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

Christina Applegate said that she set more boundaries when it came to her Ms diagnosis and work commitments than she did following her breast cancer diagnosis while starring in Samantha Who?
Speaking to Vanity Fair as part of an interview promoting Dead to Me that and published during the first Emmy-voting window, the actress opened up about the status of the animated Married… With Children project, missing her Netflix series castmates and getting support from fellow actresses like Selma Blair and Jamie-Lynn Sigler.
During the sit-down, she also spoke about the adjustments to her daily life following her diagnosis. That now includes in-home caregivers and a “purgatory” pile of items at the top of her home’s stairs, which are brought down by her non-disabled friends since Ms has affected Applegate’s balance.

Jean Smart has won her second consecutive Emmy for lead actress in a comedy series for her role as legendary Las Vegas comic Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s Hacks.

In 1954, Eve Arden made history as the first woman to win a lead acting Emmy for a specific comedy series. She achieved the honor for playing the titular character on “Our Miss Brooks,” who made her living as a high school teacher. While more than a quarter of all Best Comedy Actress-winning characters have been housewives, teaching has proven to be the category’s second most favorable occupation. After Arden, Bea Arthur (“The Golden Girls”) and Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & Molly”) took the 1988 and 2011 prizes, respectively, for portraying educators. Now, “Abbott Elementary” star and first-time Emmy nominee Quinta Brunson has a shot at becoming the fourth member of this group.
Brunson, who also created “Abbott Elementary,” entered the pilot, which aired on ABC in December, as her episode submission. The installment introduces her character, Philadelphia public school teacher Janine Teagues, an optimistic, conscientious molder of second grade minds. A scant budget...

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Jean Smart is entering the “Hacks” episode “The Click” as her 2022 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actress. “The Click” aired on May 26 and is the sixth episode of the second season of the HBO Max comedy.
In this installment, after a one-night stand with a younger man, Jason (Devon Sawa), who has no idea who she is, Deborah (Smart) realizes she needs to incorporate more self-deprecating humor into her routine. After a successful run with the new material, she ends her tour to go to Los Angeles to pitch a TV special.

Jean Smart (‘Hacks’) would be first repeat Emmy winner in Comedy Actress category since you-know-who
If Jean Smart (“Hacks”) claims another Emmy Award this year, as Gold Derby’s racetrack odds overwhelming predict will happen, she would be the first repeat Emmy winner in the Best Comedy Actress category since … do we even need to say it? You likely already know that Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) was the last person to claim back-to-back victories in this race. In fact, Jld won six in a row between 2012 and 2017, a record for any acting category at the Emmys.
Taking the “Veep” star out of the equation for a moment, you have to go all the way back to Patricia Heaton (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) in 2000 and 2001 to find a repeat champion in Best Comedy Actress. In between now and then, there were 13 leading ladies who took home one and only one trophy in this category — see the list below. But Smart has an upper hand on all of those other one-timers because she just.

In addition to winning last year’s Emmy race for Best Comedy Actress, Jean Smart (“Hacks”) claimed all of the other major TV awards bestowed by the Screen Actors Guild, Critics Choice, Golden Globes, Television Critics Association and, yes, even Gold Derby. At this stage of the 2022 Emmys derby, Smart is the de facto front-runner to gallup across the finish line yet again, but she’s hardly the only horse in this race. Joining her currently in the Top 7 are Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Sarah Lancashire (“Julia”) and Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”).

Long before the 2021 Emmys ceremony took place, it was essentially a foregone conclusion that “Hacks” star Jean Smart would walk away with the Best Comedy Actress award. Now that she is the category’s reigning champ, she could emulate the likes of Candice Bergen (“Murphy Brown”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) by achieving a direct follow-up win for her show’s sophomore season, which is set to premiere on HBO Max in May. Though she won handily last time, she could face more of a challenge this year given that she has two things in common with her biggest competitor Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”): Both women have taken the prize before, and they both play stand-up comics.
Brosnahan has been nominated three times for Amazon Prime Video’s “Maisel” and triumphed on her first outing in 2018. At the time, that race was notable in that it did not involve Louis-Dreyfus,...

Jean Smart is a legendary actor with a career that spans decades, but she has shockingly never won a SAG Award. This year she aims to change that fact thanks to her dynamite take-no-prisoners role in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” Will she soon be able to add “SAG Award winner” to her impressive list of accomplishments?
It’s odd that Smart hasn’t prevailed with her peers in the actor’s union considering the Emmys have been going gaga over her for years. The actress has racked up an astounding eleven Emmy nominations, winning four times: twice as Guest Comedy Actress for “Frasier,” once as Supporting Comedy Actress for “Samantha Who?,” and finally for Lead Comedy Actress for “Hacks.”
SAG hasn’t fawned over the actress in the same way. These awards don’t have categories for guest performers, so that eliminates several of her notable TV roles from contention.

An emotional Jean Smart paid a moving tribute to her late husband, “friend and soulmate” Richard Gilliland, who passed away in March, as she accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy on Sunday.
“I wouldn’t be here without him, without him putting his career on the back burner so I could take advantage of all the opportunities I have found,” she said.
Smart took home her fourth Emmy for a bravura performance as Deborah Vance, an aging caustic and spoiled female comedian in Las Vegas (a la Joan Rivers meets Debbie Reynolds) in the biting, much-nominated freshman HBO Max series. She thanked HBO Max and her team “for working through a pandemic. You’re all so creative and brave.”

As expected, “Hacks” star Jean Smart took home the Emmy for Best Comedy Actress during Sunday’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. In doing so, the 11-time nominee became just the second person in history to win an Emmy in the comedy lead, supporting and guest categories — and all for different shows. The only other person to complete the trifecta is the legendary Betty White.
On the HBO Max comedy, Smart portrays Deborah Vance, a comedy pioneer with a long-running Vegas show who reluctantly takes a young writer (newcomer and Emmy nominee Hannah Einbinder) under her wing. It’s an unforgettable and quite possibly career-best performance from Smart, who was also nominated this year for her supporting role as the mother of Kate Winslet’s titular character on the HBO limited series “Mare of Easttown.”

Even when Emmy voters are for the most part predictable, they always throw in a couple of surprises. Last year, for instance, “Schitt’s Creek” and “Succession” and “Watchmen” won, as expected, but Zendaya scored a shocking victory in the drama actress category for “Euphoria.” And this year, members of the Television Academy voters already pulled some big surprises at the Creative Arts Emmys, most notably when they named “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” the year’s best television movie and gave Claire Foy the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series award for one flashback scene in “The Crown.”
They’ll no doubt have other surprises up their sleeves on Sunday at the all-vaccinated, all-tested Primetime Emmy Awards. But where? “Ted Lasso” seems like a prohibitive favorite in the comedy categories and “The Crown” the leader in drama, while the nine Emmys already won by “The Queen’s Gambit” may...

There may be some turbulence ahead in Kaley Cuoco‘s path to the Emmy. The “Flight Attendant” star still has a comfortable lead in our Best Comedy Actress odds, but someone is taking flight behind her: her HBO Max colleague Jean Smart. Since “Hacks” premiered on the streaming service on May 13, Smart has surged in the rankings and now our Experts are divided between the two as each has 10 backing them to prevail.
The only other person with an Expert pick to win is Lena Waithe (“Master of None”), who sits overall in seventh place, just outside the predicted six. Netflix has picked up the series “Florida Man” starring Edgar Ramírez, the streamer announced Monday.
Described as an hourlong series in the spirit of “Body Heat” and “Out of Sight,” “Florida Man” centers on a struggling ex-cop (Ramírez) who is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend.
“What should be a quick gig becomes a spiraling journey into buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong,” Netflix’s description of the series reads.
“Samantha Who?” creator Donald Todd, whose credits also include NBC’s “This Is Us,” ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow,” is creator, showrunner and executive producer on the series. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate (“Ozark”) also serve as executive producers on the series under their first-look deal with Netflix.

Netflix has given a formal eight-episode series order to Florida Man. Edgar Ramírez, star of the streamer’s popular movie Yes Day, will headline the hourlong series from veteran TV writer producer Donald Todd and Jason Bateman & Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films.
In Florida Man, created by Todd, when a struggling ex-cop (Ramírez) is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend, what should be a quick gig becomes a spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong. The series is described as a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people in the spirit of Body Heat and Elmore Leonard’s Out of Sight.

Reynolds broke the news to the cast over the weekend. Reynolds previously worked on sitcoms 9Jkl, Samantha Who?, and The Big Bang Theory.
“I am very proud of The Neighborhood and have given everything of myself over the last three years to make this the best show possible,” Reynolds said in a statement to the outlet.
“I am so happy that the show has found such an enthusiastic audience and that it will live on. At this moment, in light of everything going on in the world, I had concluded that I am not the right person to continue to tell these stories. I am excited to see the show thrive and wish everyone involved the very best.

After years of earning nominations at the SAG Awards as part of the ensemble for “The Big Bang Theory,” Kaley Cuoco finally has her first solo bid, in Best TV Comedy Actress for HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant.” She also scored a nomination for Best TV Comedy Cast as part of the show’s ensemble after earning six consecutive nominations in the category for “Big Bang” from 2012-17.
Cuoco is facing off against some steep competition for this prize. Among them are two recent Emmy winners for “Schitt’s Creek“: Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy. Murphy’s only been nominated by this group last year as part of the “Schitt’s” ensemble. O’Hara was nominated for that as well as in this category last year and earned a nom for Limited Series/TV Movie Actress for “Temple Grandin” in 2011. Also nominated are the leading ladies from “Dead to Me,...

For the second consecutive year, Christina Applegate has earned a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking performance on Netflix’s “Dead to Me.” Applegate’s turn as Jen Harding on the dark comedy scored her two bids this year for the show’s second season for both Comedy Actress and Comedy Ensemble.
Unlike last year, Applegate is joined in the Best TV Comedy Actress category by her costar Linda Cardellini, who was snubbed for her performance in the first season. Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”) and Annie Murphy (“Schitt’s Creek”) round out the five nominees. Cardellini, Cuoco, and Murphy have all just earned their first individual SAG nominations, though they have each received ensemble bids in the past. “There’s something I have to confess,” Christina Applegate’s Jen Harding shockingly declares in the climactic final seconds of “It’s Not You, It’s Me,” the penultimate Season 2 episode of Netflix’s comedy “Dead to Me” that Applegate has submitted for Emmy Awards consideration. After scoring a somewhat unexpected nomination last year for her turn as a grief-stricken yet delightfully snarky widow, Applegate returns to the Best Comedy Lead Actress line-up this year to try to win the second Emmy of her career.
“It’s Not You, It’s Me” opens as Jen wakes up next to Ben Wood (James Marsden), feeling shocked and instantly remorseful. After she painstakingly pushes Ben away, Jen channels her vulnerability into strength and defiance, and the episode chronicles her day as Jen takes over a city council meeting after they reject her petition for a new stop sign, has heartfelt conversations with both of her sons,...

Remember how Hilary Swank beat Annette Bening twice at the Oscars? Well, she’s got nothing on Jean Smart. The “Watchmen” star is the odds-on favorite to take home the Best Limited/TV Movie Supporting Actress Emmy, and if that happens, it would mark the third time she’s defeated Holland Taylor (“Hollywood“) — all in different categories.
Smart and Taylor have nearly identical nomination records — the former has nine bids; the latter, eight. They’ve already faced off twice with Smart coming out on top both times: She won Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Frasier” in 2000 (her first career nomination) over Taylor, who was nominated for the short-lived AMC series “The Lot”; in 2008, Smart snagged the Best Comedy Supporting Actress statuette for “Samantha Who?” as Taylor was on her third of four nominations for “Two and a Half Men.”

Lucy and Ethel. Mary and Rhoda. Laverne and Shirley. Patsy and Edina. Abbi and Ilana. Television comedy has boasted plenty of amazing duos over the years, and now you should add another one to the mix: Jen and Judy, the lead characters of Netflix’s “Dead to Me.”
Television Academy members are on board, having included both Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini in the lead comedy actress category this year. That’s an improvement over 2019, when voters only recognized Applegate in the show’s freshman run.
Created by Liz Feldman, “Dead to Me” is a dark comedy that centers on Jen (Applegate), a recent widow who’s befriended by Judy (Cardellini) at a support group. The two become besties, but it all falls apart when Jen learns that Judy was partially involved in her husband’s death. From there, the body count rises — and so do the secrets. Jen and...

As America struggles with police abuses and Hollywood reckons with its depiction of cops, it’s kind of ironic that the two Emmy front-runners for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress are women with badges, though Toni Collette‘s detective in “Unbelievable” and Jean Smart‘s superhero-turned-fbi agent in “Watchmen” are among the more nuanced depictions of law enforcement in recent years. They’re both past Emmy winners, so we know the television academy loves them. Can they hold off a crowded field of challenges?

It will indeed be "Samantha Who?" next season as the sophomore series will not return for a third year.
ABC had offered to renew the amnesia comedy starring Christina Applegate if producing studio ABC Studios would cut $500,000 per episode from the show's budget for next season. (To do that, the series' producers were looking to add a third camera to its shoots, keeping the single-camera look but trimming its production schedule.)
But after running the numbers, the network brass also faced another problem -- with 10 new series picked up, four of them comedies, it had no good slots available and no ability to promote the return of "Who?"
With budget pressure, no guaranteed time slot and little chance for promotion, the network and the studio ultimately decided to pull the plug on the series.

Christina Applegate is confident her TV show Samantha Who? will survive the network axe a second time, and return for a third season later this year.
Despite the cancellation of a string of ABC shows including Life on Mars, Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money, network chiefs are keeping faith with the comedy show. Back in October they commissioned an extension to the second season.
And Applegate is hopeful the cast will all return for season three. She tells AOL Television, "No, no. They're very hush-hush over there. Believe you me, I try to get it out of everybody as much as I possibly can. (Laughs) All I hear is just, 'Be positive.' Tough times - with the economy, even networks have suffered immensely, so you just never know what's gonna happen."...

Christina Applegate, Samantha Who? -- Kelly Bundy who? Christina Applegate is hotter than ever. Who would have thought she'd strike gold twice? Although Applegate suffered personally last year, undergoing a double mastectomy due to breast cancer, by September she was back to work and at the top of her game. Professionally, she has never been better.Samantha Who?, currently in its second season, consistently delivers the goods, despite its challenging premise: A once self-absorbed bitch, Samantha Newly, wakes up from a coma with no memory of her former self. And the cast has obviously found its groove; Melissa McCarthy is especially outstanding as Samantha's put-upon friend. But the anchor of the show is Applegate, with her charm and spot-on comic timing. There is a circular kismet in Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon" nomination for best directing: In 1977 he was nominated for best supporting actor in "The Shootist," and attended the ceremony while at the same time broadcaster David Frost was holed up at the hotel and working with his research team on the history interview. "It's funny to think, 31 years later, that I was actually downstairs him."
The nomination is Howard's fifth, and the feelings are not old hat. "What I'm realizing is that I don't think you ever become blase about this kind of acknowledgment. It's the immediate recognition of the challenges that your most recent work presented; each time I make a film, anyone makes a film, it's a huge undertaking and two years of your life.
And Howard, used to making high-concept, big-budget, star-driven Hollywood movies, is also grasping with how much the awards season means to films that are opposite of that.

Brave actress Christina Applegate has been praised by her Samantha Who? co-star Jean Smart - because she returned to the set just weeks after winning her battle against breast cancer earlier this year.

Smart embraced the actress before she took to the stage at Sunday's 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, where she was honoured in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Seizing the moment to hail the star, Smart said: "The answer to the question Samantha Who? is Christina Applegate - I love you. I adore her and she sets the tone for the most amazing, brilliant hilarious cast in the world."
Smart added backstage: "I've never seen an actress who's so beloved by her cast and crew. I feel very protective of her. But she's a very spiritual person and she got through (cancer)."...
