‘Ironclaw’ star Zac Efron has been set to lead the comedy from Jody Hill ‘Famous.’
Efron will take on the role of Lance Dunkquist, a fame-hungry man who has one thing going for him: he looks exactly like Hollywood superstar James Jansen, who will also be played by Efron. Bent on using that coincidence to his advantage, Lance travels to Los Angeles determined to make it big no matter what it takes.
‘Mr. Robot’ creator Sam Esmail is attached as a producer. The project is adapted from the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, with Chad Hodge handling the screenplay. Esmail and Chad Hamilton will produce through their Esmail Corp banner. Black Bear will present the package at EFM to international buyers with CAA Media Finance and WME Independent representing the U.S. rights.

Fresh off the well received wrestling drama The Iron Claw and soon to be seen in the comedy Ricky Stanicky, Zac Efron has now signed on to star in the thriller Famous for director Jody Hill – and he’ll be playing dual roles in the film, which is based on a novel by Blake Crouch!
Scripted by Chad Hodge, who created the short-lived, Crouch-inspired TV series Wayward Pines back in 2015, Famous has the following synopsis: Lance Dunkquist has one asset that’s about to change his life – he has the face of a movie star. And not just any movie star – Lance is the spitting image of a Hollywood icon, James Jansen. Lance is about to travel to Los Angeles to make his dream come true. Lance is going to be famous, no matter what it takes… The film aims to be a “provocative and highly entertaining Los Angeles-set thriller...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.
Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu original film The Ultimate Playlist of Noise premieres on Jan. 15 and TV series Everyone is Doing Great arrives on Jan. 13.

Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Over the course of a single year, the staff of IndieWire consumes a dizzying amount of films, thanks to packed film festival slates, stuffed streaming offerings, and regular old theatrical releases. Along the way, we find plenty of films to love, and closing out another year at the movies gives us a chance to keep spreading the good word of the year’s best (at least in our eyes).

The filmmakers and frequent Danny McBride collaborators spill the beans about their new series, megachurches, and 10 years on HBO.
Danny McBride may have a sole creator credit on his new HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, but his old film school buddies and frequently collaborators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green of course weren’t too far away.
Hill has been working with McBride since their breakout feature debut The Foot Fist Way and both have played substantial, even co-creator roles, in his past HBO series Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals. On Gemstones, Hill and Gordon Green serve as executive producers, with Hill directing and both men heavily involved in the creative process. For anyone that dreams of making movies or TV shows with their friends, McBride, Hill, and Gordon Green’s journeys in Hollywood are aspirational and inspiring.

He burst on the scene as the hapless proprietor of a strip mall dojo in the low budget The Foot Fist Way, and Danny McBride just scored his biggest success as co-writer of the low budget sequel to the 40-year old John Carpenter film Halloween. Its $80 million opening gross, a record for October, likely will prevent him from being able to sneak up on people anymore. McBride has carved a career writing and starring in comedies that include the HBO series Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals. He is writing and directing the next one, The Righteous Gemstones, an HBO series that will star John Goodman, Adam Devine and Edie Patterson. Here, McBride discusses how he and his cohorts got away with treading on Halloween‘s hallowed horror ground, figuring out ideas for the sequel, and how, if Jamie Lee Curtis hadn’t reprised Laurie Strode, it might have fallen...

Arizona (Jonathan Watson)
It’s hard not to like Danny McBride. Since his first movie role in David Gordon Green’s All The Real Girls to his breakout dark comedy The Foot Fist Way and beyond, the performer operates at his own energetic speed, often elevating whatever he’s in. In Arizona, directed by McBride’s Vice Principals producer Jonathan Watson, the comedian is given plenty to play with early on and he makes the most it. Unfortunately, the majority of the material is worn out in the first thirty minutes, which leaves the final fifty-five. – Dan M. (full review)

Over the course of two films and two successful HBO series, filmmaker Jody Hill has carved out a career as a provocateur centered on toxic narcissists, unchecked male ego and huge, mean-spirited jackasses. His work tends to draw admiration and ire in equal measure, as the lead characters of his stories are always aggressively unlikeable, pushing the boundary of just how much an audience can empathize with contemptible blowhards.

A subdued, sincerely felt character study sees the Oscar nominee play a father struggling to keep it together during a bonding trip with his son
Testosterone’s a hell of a drug. It pumps through the filmography of Jody Hill, turning insecure men mad as they scramble to reaffirm their masculinity in a world that reveals how absurd their machismo really is. The director’s lifelong muse Danny McBride married a headstrong bluster with a gelatinous inner core as a martial arts instructor (the 2004 feature The Foot Fist Way), a has-been of major league baseball (TV’s Eastbound and Down), and a high school faculty member (their follow-up series Vice Principals). McBride takes a supporting role in The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, ceding the tempest-in-a-manly-teapot role to Josh Brolin for Hill’s latest big-screen outing, but the psychological profile is unchanged. What better way to ring in the country’s 242nd birthday than by streaming “Madam Secretary,” “American Psycho,” or “Election”? Those patriotic titles are among some of the earliest coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu in July 2018.
A healthy mix of classics and new originals are on their way to Netflix in the coming month, including films such as the original “Jurassic Park” saga and “The Princess Diaries,” as well as TV shows like “The Sinner” and “Sofia the First.” Among the original series returning to the streaming giant are “Orange Is the New Black” and Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” along with some new premieres.

"Why aren't you recording this, Don? This is part of the narrative." Netflix has debuted a full-length trailer for indie comedy The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, the latest film from filmmaker Jody Hill in collaboration with his friend Danny McBride. The descriptions for this only say that it's about a great hunter named Buck Ferguson who takes his trusted cameraman Don on an epic weekend adventure to reconnect with his young son. "Buck sets out for what soon becomes an unexpectedly epic adventure of father-son reconnection in the great outdoors" Josh Brolin stars with Danny McBride (who co-wrote the script) and Montana Jordan. This looks like a nice bit of comedy and satire, making fun of all the serious father-son hunting trips. It's perfect for Netflix. Here's the full official trailer for Jody Hill's The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, from YouTube: The great hunter Buck...

“Vice Principals” and “Eastbound & Down” co-creator Jody Hill is back with his first film in almost a decade. Like all his major projects to date, “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” is a comedy with Danny McBride in a plum role. Hill and McBride penned the Netflix script with John Carcieri, a producer on their past HBO series.
Leading the cast is John Brolin as Buck Ferguson, a hunter who fronts “Buck Fever” wildlife documentary specials. He brings his cameraman (McBride) and pre-teen son (Montana Jordan of “Young Sheldon”) on a rugged trek, but the latter misses the modern comforts of 21st century life. In his boredom, the boy reveals that his mother (Carrie Coon) — whom Buck misses two years post-divorce — is about to become engaged (Scoot McNairy of “Halt and Catch Fire” plays her boyfriend).

At this point, you probably know whether or not you’re a fan of filmmaker Jody Hill’s unique brand of humor. As seen in his previous projects like “Eastbound & Down,” “Observe and Report,” “The Foot Fist Way,” and most recently, “Vice Principals,” Hill has a comedic voice all his own. Jody Hill and Danny McBride’s creative fusion has a brazenly hysterical yet sincere way of showing the underbelly of men; characters who aspire to greatness, but through their flaws, fall short as divorced fathers or misfits, from the Sundance hit that made the duo, The Foot Fist Way, to their latest HBO comedy series, Vice Principals. In two television series (“Eastbound & Down” and “Vice Principals”) and two feature films (“The Foot Fist Way” and “Observe and Report”), writer/director Jody Hill and writer/star Danny McBride have created a devastatingly funny and increasingly relevant commentary on the curse of toxic masculinity. The Hill/McBride “hero” is, in most cases, a retrograde blowhard, dumb as a stump and proud as a peacock, the kind of forgotten man that was easy to dismiss until they put their alpha male into the Oval Office.
The specificity with which their best works address (and, to some extent, explain) the broken soul of the American man in the 2010s is, unfortunately, a quality that’s barely present in their latest collaboration – which is particularly disappointing, because they’ve selected such a juicy target. “The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter” concerns that most macho and yet inexplicable of American male traditions,...

On a warm, overcast December afternoon, Danny McBride rides up to a quiet, unassuming beach bar outside Charleston, South Carolina, on a small motorbike. He parks, greets the staff warmly; a waitress offers a friendly hug and invites him to the bar's Christmas party the following Monday. "It's all free, 6 to 9," she tells him. McBride, unshaven, in a gray T-shirt and jeans, smiles and settles into a booth. "I'll be here," he promises, and orders a beer.
In July, McBride packed up his family and moved from Los Angeles to South Carolina.

Each year, the Sundance Film Festival rolls out an enviable lineup of jury members — billed as “experts in film, art, culture and science” — to dole out awards to the feature-length works shown at the festival. In total, 28 prizes (and sometimes more!) will be announced at a ceremony on January 28 (as ever, Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 24). The festival has now announced this year’s various jury members, including actors, filmmakers, producers, writers and other luminaries (and, yes, plenty of Sundance alums pop up amongst their ranks).
Additionally, the festival has also announced that actress, comedian, correspondent and podcast host Jessica Williams will host the annual awards. Jones seems poised to have a very busy Sundance indeed, as she also toplines James Strouse’s premiere “The Incredible Jessica James,” which will close out the festival the night before.

Today we’re launching a new video series of which we’re extremely proud: It’s “Movies That Inspire Me,” presented by FilmStruck. TV history is littered with series that suffer from not knowing how many episodes they need to tell their story. The one I always come back to is Lost. If producers and the network could have just mapped out the series in advance and established reasonable arcs for the relevant characters, they would have avoided what I’ve always called “filler episodes” (or perhaps even “filler seasons”). You know the ones, the episodes where nothing really happens and whatever cliffhanger they manufacture is far from satisfying. Two people who have figured this out are Danny McBride and Jody Hill, the co-creators of the upcoming HBO series Vice Principals. McBride, who has previously worked with Hill on Eastbound & Down and The Foot Fist Way, explained exactly why the series will be limited to only 18 episodes. “We just wanted to make a really long movie. For every movie like Little Miss Sunshine or Whiplash that explodes at Sundance en route to becoming an Oscar-winning pop-culture phenomenon, there are dozens of great movies that had warm openings at Sundance but didn't connect with audiences like they should have, for whatever reason. Jody Hill may not be a huge comedy name like Judd Apatow, but his work behind the camera on "The Foot Fist Way," "Observe & Report," and the HBO series "Eastbound & Down" has certainly made clear what his distinct and brash brand of humor is all about. There are many things to like about Patton Oswalt. His stand-up is funny, biting and incisive, and he’s proven to be a more-than-capable dramatic actor in films ranging from Jason Reitman’s “Young Adult” and the underrated “Big Fan,” which you should see immediately if you haven’t already. One of Oswalt’s most endearing qualities is that he tells a damn good story. His recounting of Wesley Snipes smoking weed and communicating with “Blade: Trinity” director David Goyer exclusively through post-it notes is the stuff of legend by now, and his beautifully-written endorsement of Jody Hill’s redneck tragicomedy “The Foot Fist Way” made me want to see the film before a single episode of HBO’s great “Eastbound and Down” had hit the air. But the following tops them all. In an excerpt from his upcoming memoir “Silver Screen Fiend,” the comic/actor tells a bizarre, sometimes...

Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The good news is that now that all the singing and the farting around is done in Hobbiton and the story has kicked in good and proper, the majority of this second in Peter Jackson’s portrayal of a slim Tolkien story overblown to epic proportions is mostly action with a minimum of plot. It’s still got various story beats it has to hit of course and is very much a middle chapter, but this has a momentum which was really missing from An Unexpected Journey.
In this second Hobbit film you can start to see the stuff that was added in to pad out the two films into a trilogy with characters who do not appear in the books introduced and a weird elf/dwarf romance along with a more angsty and badass Legolas, strangely enough it doesn’t feel out-of-place. Our series of lists devoted to underappreciated films brings us to the year 2006, and a further 25 overlooked gems...
With all the major films that elbow their way into their cinemas every year, there's bound to be some casualties among the big hits. And just like any other year, 2006 was dominated by the likes of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, The Da Vinci Code and Ice Age: The Meltdown. But in tandem, there were dozens of lesser-seen films which shuffled in and out of cinemas (or occasionally, didn't get a release in cinemas at all) without very many people noticing.
