Not sure what to watch? We can help with our comprehensive guide to the best films on TV this Christmas and new year

Saturday 19 December

Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

10am, 8pm, Sky Movies Premiere

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)

11.40am, 8pm, Sky Movies Family

What with Harry Potter, Narnia, Lemony Snicket and all, »

Hollywood should stop making films about our great writers | Tanya Gold

11 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Bright Star, the new movie about Keats, has ruined him for me. It's not the first time and it certainly won't be the last

On Sunday I did the bad thing again. I bought a ticket to Bright Star, the biopic about John Keats. I have always liked Keats, despite the line, "Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird!" But I had forgotten what I call the Impromptu Law – after the George Sand biopic, Impromptu (1991), which stars Judy Davis as Sand and Hugh Grant and a handkerchief as Chopin.

My "Impromptu law" states: don't watch films about writers. Die of tuberculosis. Stick your head in the oven. If you are a writer, stick your life's work in the oven as well – then maybe they won't get you.

As soon as Keats appeared with his quill, I knew it was bad. Ignore the applauding critics; they have been blinded by the Shrek franchise. »

Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper Rumored Getting Engaged

24 August 2009 2:04 AM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

It seems that rumored couple, Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper, has decided to bring their relationship to the next level. According to Glamorati, the 34-year-old actor has introduced her to his parents in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania and announced their engagement.

Additionally, the 40-year-old beauty has reportedly been caught wearing a "simple but elegant diamond ring". However, she took it off when making an appearance on "Late Show with David Letterman" on Thursday, August 20, Glamorati reports.

Recently, a short clip which videotapes Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper making out emerged. In the video, the twosome, which can next be seen starring together on "Case 39", is seen sharing a kiss while making a visit to a church in Spain. In another documentary taken from their holiday, the "Miss Potter" actress was snapped slipping her hand in the back pocket of Bradley's pants while they strolled down on a street. »

Red Carpet: Amanda's Tip Money, Jennifer's Baby Food

21 August 2009 8:14 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

A random sampling of actresses (and actor) that were out and about this week, as is our habit since this isn't a celebrity fashion blog but we do like to stargaze. From left to right: Mélanie Laurent, Amanda Seyfried, Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger, Miss Piggy and Jennifer Aniston

photos reworked from Zimbio & Just Jared

Why do you suppose Amanda Seyfried has cash out?

I'm pretending that she's going to tip Mélanie and Christoph for their fine work in Inglourious Basterds. I certainly want to. I'm shoving $20s down their pants if I get the chance. The photo of Seyfried was actually snapped on the set of her new movie with Gael García Bernal (Letters to Juliet) so maybe she's saving the tip money... she must have seen Bad Education.

Renee Zellweger's career saved: 'Bridget Jones 3' in the works

14 July 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Having made her dwindling fanbase suffer through "New in Town," "Appaloosa" and "Miss Potter," Renee Zellweger has received a gift from the movie gods:  Working Title is developing a third "Bridget Jones" movie. The project is in the early stages, but Variety reports the project will probably be based on the 2005 weekly columns original author Helen Fiedling  wrote where the forty-something Bridget attempts to have a baby before it's too late.  According to the trade, Zellweger, whose biggest hit recently has been voicing a CG animated character in "Bee Movie, seems keen on returning to the unlucky in love British »

The Amelia Trailer Has Landed

26 June 2009 3:26 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hilary Swank is flying right at her third Oscar nomination.

I fear she'll use the red carpet as her landing strip and slice me to bits with her propellor. On purpose!

While I think the Amelia trailer is trying a little too desperately to make this seem action-packed -- the music and the sound mix in particular are screaming "it's not just a stuffy period biopic. We swear!" -- it looks right up Oscar's alley all told:

Inspirational. Check!

True story. Check!Tragic ending. Check!Iconic Historical Figure Everyone Is Duty Bound To Love. Check!I wouldn't put this on Oscar's best picture list just yet but who knows. People are already getting carried away claiming locks for dozens of pictures that haven't opened yet. I remind once again: 10 nominees, not 50 ;)

I like the timbre of Swank's voice in the trailer. I must admit. I've clearly underestimated her in my »

New in Town (review)

30 January 2009 7:04 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

It’s like Fargo meets Doc Hollywood, with a bit of that movie with Michael Keaton and the Japanese auto executives thrown in for what-the-hell’s sake. Except that it’s bad. Terrible. Like please-just-kill-me awful. As generic as its title while also yawningly idiotic in its own unique way, New in Town is so ridiculously simplistic that it reduces even those characters it likes to cardboard caricatures. And the ones it doesn’t like -- such as its own protagonist, corporate executive Lucy Hill -- well, they’re really in trouble. Renée Zellweger’s (Bee Movie, Miss Potter) Lucy, see, is such a complete fucking moron that she, though allegedly an intelligent, college-educated, sophisticated woman, can travel from Miami to Minnesota in November without once checking Weather.com, or having the administrative assistant she surely has and surely abuses terribly check for her. So then it’s hilarious -- »

Renee Zellweger endures freezing temps to mine laughs in 'New in Town'

28 January 2009 8:06 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

“New in Town” is nothing new for Renee Zellweger and no, it has nothing to do with her much-needed return to the romantic comedy genre that launched her career.  Unlike other stars who purposely make sure their films shoot as much as possible in New York or Los Angeles, it appears that Zellweger is a traveler.  Her last four releases have sent her to Toronto (“Cinderella Man”), England (“Miss Potter”), South Carolina (“Leatherheads”), Austin, Texas (“Appaloosa”) and most recently, the sub zero temperatures of Winnipeg, Canada.  (Yes, she shot “Case 39” in Vancouver somewhere in that mix, but it’s been on »
