This year the Academy has expanded the “Best Picture” category to 10 nominees, which opens the door to even more expensive Oscar campaigns from major Hollywood studios. Every year the “For Your Consideration” ads pop up on popular industry websites like Variety but, as the Playlist points out, this year has been especially laughable as companies vie for one of those slots with a few questionable picks.
For example, Sony Pictures is pushing 2012 for consideration in unknown categories, though these campaigns are usually just “notice us for anything, please!” Presumably it has a shot at a visual effects nod, though it doesn’t deserve one. I can’t imagine it being nominated for anything but Razzies, really. Sony is also advertising This Is It, which already missed the short list for “Best Documentary,” so apparently they think it’s worthy of “every [other] category conceivable” at the suggestion of crazy Elizabeth Taylor. »

Here's the first For Your Consideration ad for The Hangover, which is a pop-up at Variety that First Showing noticed recently. It's not strictly speaking an Oscar ad, but it's definitely gunning for some Golden Globes.
The ad reads that the film should be considered in all categories, as it relates to the Musical or Comedy division. That would include the script, one of the better comedy screenplays in a long, long time, although it has virtually no shot at that category. We somewhat controversially posited the notion that Warner Bros. might push the movie and Zach Galifianakis for Academy Award nominations, and I still think on the Robert-Downey-in-Tropic-Thunder scale, Galifianakis is not that far-fetched a notion, even though he can't possibly win. »

Months after its release and immense box office success, The Hangover is still all over the place in movie news, which can only mean one thing-- it wants an award. No, seriously. While the expanded Best Picture category still probably doesn't make room for The Hangover, the movie does stand a chance at the Golden Globes, which likely explains the For Your Consideration ad that ran in Variety recently (as spotted by First Showing). While they treat it as a joke, it's more than possible-- the Comedy or Musical category is typically much lighter on eventual Best Picture contenders, and aside from Julie & Julia, A Serious Man and Nine, it's hard to think of other likely Best Picture nominees to fill the space. Why not include the year's highest-grossing comedy and give Zach Galifianakis a chance to dress up in a tux? Check out the ad below: In other Hangover »

Earlier today I caught a glimpse of a 'For Your Consideration' ad (click to enlarge above) for Warner Bros.' comedy The Hangover over on First Showing. Alex had clipped it from Variety and posted it with a big question mark: "The Hangover for Best Picture?!" As Alex points out, It sounds like a ludicrous suggestion for Warner Bros. to be pitching The Hangover to awards voters in any, not to mention all categories. But it is no joke -- and I object to his rather naive assessment of this, saying that he thought it to initially be "a big joke." It isn't a joke, and it's not just about the Golden Globes. Paramount had success with their campaign for Tropic Thunder, the breakout comedy of 2008. Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise earned Golden Globe nominations, with Downey scoring an Oscar nom as well for Best Supporting Actor. There's »

With the end of the year approaching, we can expect to see a lot of the Oscar campaigns kicking into high gear as the various studios try to ensure that their prestige films are getting noticed by the Academy. These campaigns often include ads in industry publications such as Variety using the phrase "For Your Consideration", along with the various award categories they are bidding for. It may seem weird that marketing campaigns play a role in the Oscars, but hey, it's Hollywood. Anyway, imagine my surprise when I visited the Variety website this morning only to find a giant pop-up ad for The Hangover staring back at me! As you can see, the ad reads "For Your Consideration In All Categories" including "Best Picture". My first thought was that they can't possibly be serious, and that this must be a clever viral marketing ploy to promote The Hangover DVD coming out next month. »

Some folks are scratching their heads over a recent “For Your Consideration” ad is for one of the year’s most profitable films, Todd Phillips’ The Hangover. For those who don’t know, For Your Consideration-ads are attempts by a studio to get a movie nominated for awards but namely Oscars. It may sound crazy but with ten Oscar slots open and a more concentrated approach, I don’t think it’s impossible for The Hangover to be out of the game. Hit the jump to find out why.
FirstShowing.net noticed the ad running on Variety. However, the site also noted that while The Hangover was asking for consideration in all categories, it was specifically asking for “Best Picture” (Musical or Comedy) which means it’s aiming at a Golden Globe. Since the Golden Globes is an easy-going shindig, The Hangover has pretty good shot at landing a nomination. »

Wait, what?! Yep, this is real. While browsing Variety tonight, this ad popped up on the website, asking for Academy voters to nominate the Warner Brothers' comedy The Hangover for Best Picture. We've seen plenty of For Your Consideration ads before (I featured the ad for Pixar's Up last week), but this is not an ad I ever expected to see. I liked The Hangover, but as the Best Picture? No way! What the heck is wrong with Warner Brothers? Is this a joke? It even says on the top: "For Your Consideration In All Categories." Does anyone actually think that Zach Galifianakis or Ed Helms should be nominated for Best Actor? Oh come on! At first I thought this was a big joke. Maybe someone at Warner Brothers wanted to have fun and put an ad in Variety saying that The Hangover should win Best Picture. I mean, »

Earlier today, I was flexing some of my Oscar-predicting muscle by saying that Sandra Bullock might have placed herself in the Best Actress conversation with her role in The Blind Side. What I haven't talked about yet is the dearth of great female performances this year that might allow for a rather schmaltzy movie like The Blind Side to sneak in and get a nomination. Of course, this dearth does not include the two sensational ladies in Precious, lead Gabby Sibide and supporting star Mo'nique. Sibide is front and center in the new poster for Precious, which will serve as the film's first leap into this year's 'For Your Consideration' campaign. Our friends at HitFix debuted the first poster: Joining Precious in the early race to get the attention of Academy members is Pixar's Up, which recently bought a spot on the front page of Daily Variety to kick-off their campaign not only for Best »

Just when we thought Modern Family couldn't get any more hilarious...
The best new sitcom in years has announced that Fred Willard will guest star on a future episode. The actor - a veteran of movies such as Best in Show and For Your Consideration - will play Phil's father.
Said Ty Burrell (Phil), who campaigned for this casting addition earlier in the year:
“Fred is not just a pioneer for this type of comedy, but somebody who has really set the tone for how it can be done, so it was just a total honor [to work with him]. He really established, even going back to Spinal Tap, some of the funniest stuff out of the medium.”
Willard joins a long list of impressive Modern Family guest stars, including: Shelley Long, Edward Norton, Benjamin Bratt, Chazz Palmenteri and Minnie Driver. »

One of the many perks of the awards season are the For Your Consideration ads that studios run at this time of year. Basically, full-page ads are taken out in the trade mags to get Academy voters to consider that movie when they're voting. It's part of the epic political process of getting a movie nominated at the Oscars. While this may seem a bit odd to those not a part of the industry, I like these Fyc ads because they're always beautifully designed and they always highlight a great movie. For example, this full-page ad for Pixar's Up (scanned via Awards Daily) is quite gorgeous and shows that Disney really wants this to win Best Picture. I could go into how it was smart that they chose to use two photos from the best, and most emotional, part of the movie, but that's really overthinking this simple ad. In »

Disney purchased the front cover of the Hollywood trade newspaper Variety to push Pixar's computer animated film Up for Award season (thanks to Awards Daily for the scan). The advertisement For Your Consideration section pushes the feature for not only the Best Animated Feature category, but also Best Picture (an no, this isn't a surprise). With ten best picture nominees, Up is sure to at least get a nod, but does the film really have a chance for Best Picture? It's interesting that they are selling the Best Picture campaign purely on the opening of Up, and the montage of Carl and his wife. Check out the full cover after the jump followed by an interesting excerpt from a 1997 letter from Steve Jobs talking about how he wants to establish Pixar as the third brand in entertainment, alongside Steven Spielberg and Disney, Another thing I came across recently was Steve Jobs »

Opening to the Coen bros.' script for A Serious Man
Photo: Focus Features Do you have an opinion on what scripts should take home the awards for Best Original and Best Adapted Screenplays at the 2010 Oscars? Well, if not you may want to begin by reading a few yourself as I have once again updated the online script database for this year's contenders as more and more For Your Consideration sites open up their doors.
Today I have added nine new scripts as Focus, Lionsgate, Warner Bros. and Overture have brought their award sites online.
If you are interested, the Focus Features site is incredibly involved and quite fancy. It features not only the scripts for A Serious Man, 9, Coraline and Sin Nombre but also the complete scores/soundtracks in 192kbps .MP3 quality. Carter Burwell's score for A Serious Man is worth the visit alone. Warner Bros. also »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

After deciding that “Yo, Give Us an Oscar” was a bad way to kick-start an awards marketing campaign for a film, studios went with what are known as “For Your Consideration” ads which usually appear in the print versions of “Variety” and “The Hollywood Reporter”. I always find it interesting to see which films think they’re good enough for an Oscar and which ones are completely delusional. However, the first one out the gate, “A Serious Man” is already a strong contender. And while this ad may not have the words “For Your Consideration” stamped across the top, we’ll be seeing those ads soon enough. Seriously.
Hit the jump to check out the ad and we’ll be bringing you more of the standouts as award season heats up.
AwardsDaily has the market cornered on collecting these and we’ll be sure to always credit them as we »

The Academy can–and often does–neglect obvious choices in the major Oscar categories. Studios throw their weight behind certain films and actors and it usually turns out that the biggest marketing budget wins. Then there’s the obstacle of how the Academy turns away from performances in genre films in favor of hot actresses going ugly or actors doing a perfect impression of a recently deceased legend. Throw all this together and it looks like the people are going to have to rally if Sam Rockwell is going to get the Oscar nomination he deserves for his performance in Duncan Jones’ “Moon”. Hit the jump to find out how you can support a worthy cause.
We join our brothers at /Film in the campaign to get Mr. Rockwell an Oscar nomination. If you know an Academy member, let them know but do so with some subtlety. For example, if someone says, »

Everybody's asking the question: "Who's going to serve as the villain or villains in the sequel to last summer's Star Trek?" Now that we're in an alternate Trek timeline, writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are free to tell stories that incorporate familiar faces but combine them in new and interesting ways.
Which got us thinking: who's likely to make the short list, and what sort of possible stories/combinations might we see? Will the filmmakers choose to go the route of borrowing once more from canon...or will they elect to craft an entirely new story with entirely new antagonists?
Since new antagonists are impossible to predict, we decided to look to the original canon and have offered a list of possible villains from which Orci and Kurtzman could choose. We've divided the categories up into four groups:
The Heavy Hitters
The Middleweight Contenders
The Individual Narcissists
