Ives Song Helped Nervous Gyllenhaal Get To Sleep

Movie star Jake Gyllenhaal has a soft spot for Burl Ives' song The Fox because it helped him fall asleep as a child.

The Jarhead star admits he had trouble dropping off after he was mugged outside his house and his father would sing The Fox to reassure and relax him.

The actor recalls, "When I was a little kid we were robbed outside of our house. We were driving home, we pulled up and we were robbed, and ever since I was always really nervous about falling asleep, you know, naturally, and so my dad would sing this to me before I'd go to bed."

The song has since become one of Gyllenhaal's favourites and he picked it as part of a musical trip through his life for a recent taping of Los Angeles radio station Kcrw's Guest DJ Project show. …

About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Top Editors Brought In to Re-Cut The Wolfman

Of all the big films on the docket for next year, the one I’m most concerned about is The Wolfman. The second trailer for the film looked pretty badass, I’ll admit – but this movie has suffered a plagued production from the get-go. A change in directors, callbacks for reshoots and re-designs in the creature effects… It all points to a studio trying to turn lead into gold through the usual movie alchemy.

Well, the guys over at Slash Film must have magnifying glass eyes, because they spotted something deep-six buried in an article over at Variety, which names editors Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch as the two guys hired to do a recut of The Wolfman!

 

This revelation comes without the usual fanfare from the blogosphere that goes with every little development on a major movie – suggesting that the studio is trying to keep the continuing problems with …

More Wolfman Crew Shuffling as New Editors Are Brought In

And Universal's The Wolfman continues down a bumpy road toward its February 12, 2010, release date. On the editing front Dennis (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Fog-2005 version) Virkler is apparently out, and Mark Goldblatt and Walter Murch are in.

Goldblatt started out strong with The Howling, Halloween II, The Terminator (1 and 2), and he most recently worked on X-Men: The Last Stand and G-Force. Murch did editing and sound work on such diverse fare as Apocalypse Now, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Godfather: Part III, and Jarhead.

The news was somewhat buried in a Variety article, but /Film did a good job fleshing it out. At this point we can only wonder about director Joe Johnston’s day-to-day involvement with the picture after all the myriad changes it's undergone, and as more details are made available, we'll pass them on.

An Education Movie Review

I love when I get excited about a film solely for the actors involved. It doesn’t matter what the film is about, as long as actors I like are on screen, I can enjoy it. An Education started out that way, but by the time the credits scrolled upwards, I loved the film as a whole. Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass, Jarhead) and Carey Mulligan (Pride Prejudice, Public Enemies) were the actors I was excited to see. Oh yea, and Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, and Sally Hawkins were thrown in there too. With all that fire power, and a script by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), who wouldn’t want to see this film?

An Education is a period piece in London, 1962 (post-war, pre-Beatles). It’s rare I make a note during the screening to mention the opening credits in my review, but they were really great in this one! Jenny …

John Hillcoat’s The Wettest Country in the World Interests Johansson, Dano, Gosling and More

John Hillcoat's adaptation of the Matt Bondurant novel The Wettest Country in the World isn't happening yet. It was set up at Columbia for some time, but put into turnaround by the studio. Now producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher (who did Jarhead and Memoirs of a Geisha and are working on Nicolas Winding Refn's Jekyll at Universal) are trying to make the film work as an indie. Because there is interest from a bevy of young stars (including, ahem, Shia Labeouf) it might actually happen. The Wettest Country in the World sounds like a fantastic story and a perfect project for Hillcoat. It's based on the story of Bondurant's own grandfather and great-uncles, who ran a depression-era moonshine/bootlegging business. Upon finishing Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road (2008) it felt like the life had been drained out of me. While impeccably produced and acted, the film is so emotionally heavy and unrelentingly depressing, I am relieved there was not a firearm or straight razor within arm's reach during viewing. I have the utmost respect for the caliber of the work but should it be so painful to endure? Almost as an anecdote, the director churned out the indie flick Away We Go (2009) within six months that is a total reversal in tone from his previous effort.
