The cast of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is still close nearly 20 years after they first came together.
Blake Lively, America Ferrera, Alexis Bledel and Amber Tamblyn played best friends united by a pair of pants that followed them on huge adventures in two movies starting back in 2005.
The perfect cast is part of what made the franchise as successful as it is. However, we recently learned that several other big actresses were in the running for the roles.
Producer Debra Martin Chase named six stars who were could have played Carmen, Tibby, Lena and Bridget during an appearance on the Hollywood Gold podcast.
The shortlist included one actress who was famous for her role on The O.C. and several other young actresses who have gone far in Hollywood. Debra shared insight into how they selected each person for their roles and opened up about the challenges behind the decisions.

Countless actresses auditioned for Mean Girls, and Ashley Tisdale was one of them.
The High School Musical breakout stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Monday, where she was asked by a fan if it was true she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the hit 2004 film.
“Gosh, it was so long ago,” Tisdale said. “I just remember screen-testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen-tested. That was like, eons ago, obviously.”
Amanda Seyfried eventually went on to portray Karen, and the film marked the Emmy-winning actress’ biggest role at the time. Shortly after, Tisdale landed The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then High School Musical. Lively starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before landing the lead role in Gossip Girl.
During her appearance on the late night show, Tisdale also recounted her audition for Mean Girls.

By her own admission, America Ferrera was not a Barbie girl growing up. But now, two decades into her career, Ferrera will be forever bathed in the warm pink glow of the Mattel brand thanks to her role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Ferrera plays a central role as Gloria, a Mattel employee dealing with an existential crisis in the real world, that sends a ripple into Barbie Land and awakens Margot Robbie’s stereotypical Barbie. After Barbie’s female utopia falls prey to a patriarchal coup spearheaded by Ryan Gosling’s Ken, Gloria steps in to set things right. Here, Ferrera reflects on womanhood, her career and making her directorial debut.
Deadline: Post-Barbie, have you been able to fully wrap your mind around being a part of the girlhood lexicon forever? But of course, you have been since Real Women Have Curves, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Ugly Betty.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a story of friendship that fans still love to watch nearly 20 years after it first premiered.
The original movie premiered in 2005, starring best friends Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera and Blake Lively who are united… by a universal pair of pants. They got back together again for a sequel in 2008, and there’s been talk of a third movie over the years.
The cast has been in the news recently thanks to their enduring friendships, and we got curious about how much everyone was worth.
We did some digging and put together a ranking of the franchise’s biggest stars based on their estimated net worth! Who comes out on top? The character was introduced in the second movie and beats out the next closest earner by $10 million.

When Tuesday morning’s Oscar nominations were announced, “Barbie” star America Ferrera was snuggled in bed alone and watching on her phone as her husband Ryan Piers Williams drove their kids to school.
“There was a moment where I wasn’t sure if I had made it up,” Ferrera tells Variety. “And then my phone started blowing up so I figured that I must have heard it right.”
The overwhelming emotion surrounding earning her first Academy Award nomination — for playing Gloria, the human lens through which “Barbie” is viewed in the $1.4 billion blockbuster comedy — has been shock. “I still haven’t really been able to get in my feelings because I’m still on like the top layer of ‘I can’t even believe that this is real,'” Ferrera explains.

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw 3D, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The final installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Secret Santa and the trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking. He also teases several projects that are in the works, including a monstrous collaboration with special effects legend Robert Kurtzman.
Secret Santa was born out of Marcus and his writing partner/wife Debra Sullivan’s frustration with the lack of creative control they had on their two previously produced screenplays, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw and 2015’s Momentum. “Artistically, it just started to feel really hollow. Jesse Williams has a history of playing heartthrobs in movies, from his debut as Leo in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and his breakout role as the ripped and charming plastic surgeon Jackson Avery to his latest role as Tobert in season three of "Only Murders in the Building." Life imitates art, because the former school teacher is a bonafide heartthrob in real life, too. But life imitates art in other ways, too. Just like his "Grey's Anatomy" character Jackson, Williams's love life has had its ups and downs.
Since Williams is a TV star, it's sometimes impossible to keep details about his relationships out of the press, like the case of his divorce from his partner of 13 years, Aryn Drake-Lee - or the extended custody battle that ensued over their two kids afterward. Actually, these types of "leaks" happen to Williams a lot in life, and not just...

This article contains spoilers for "Barbie."
From the very first trailer, it was obvious that Greta Gerwig was the perfect person to bring "Barbie" to the big screen. Not only is she a gifted filmmaker who has delivered phenomenal works like "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," but she's also someone who wanted to honor the legacy of the Barbie doll as a cultural institution in addition to discussing themes of gender disparity and how the patriarchy hurts us all. Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach clearly did their homework when coming up with the screenplay, incorporating multiple areas of Barbie's history, including the creator of the doll herself.
We've known for a while now that Rhea Perlman had been cast in "Barbie," but without an individual character poster, no one knew who she was going to play. Well, after a slapstick chase scene through the halls of Mattel, Barbie (Margot Robbie...

Barbie may be everything, and Ken is just Ken, but what about the people in the Real World they meet along the way? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, based on the popular dolls, is a hyper-stylized take on the Mattel toys that sees the titular doll journey from Barbie Land to the Real World on a quest of self-discovery.
This movie definitely looks the part, but it wouldn’t be what it is without its incredible all-star cast full of award-winning actors and familiar faces. Here’s what you need to know about the Barbie characters and the actors who play them.
Margot Robbie is Barbie
In addition to producing the movie, Margot Robbie plays a Barbie doll who has an existential crisis and is forced to go on a journey from Barbie Land to the Real World to find answers. She’s everything, but is that enough? Robbie is most...

Seven years ago, pioneering film and TV producer Debra Martin Chase was thinking about leaving Hollywood.
The first Black woman to ink an overall deal at any studio, she’d produced such genre-defining hits as “The Princess Diaries,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” While getting projects about women and people of color off the ground was never easy, suddenly prospects were stagnant.
“It was at a point where Hollywood just wasn’t interested,” she tells Variety, reflecting on the career crossroads from the living room of her apartment in New York, where she lives while her popular CBS series “The Equalizer” is in production. “You’d talk to people — particularly white men — and their eyes would just glaze over.”
As Martin Chase approached 30 years in the business, her passion was slipping away. She thought, “Maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me:...

The plastics in Mean Girls almost looked a little different.
Amanda Seyfried, who played Karen Smith in the 2004 film, originally auditioned for the role of Regina George, which eventually went to Rachel McAdams.
“I’d flown out to L.A. for the first time with my mother. It was very exciting,” Seyfried told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “I met Lacey Chabert for the first time, and Lindsay Lohan was in the room, and Blake Lively was playing Karen, and then I was Regina.”
The Emmy-winning actress left the room thinking she’d get a call either telling her that she did or didn’t get the part of the Queen Bee, but instead, they had another offer for her.
“I flew home, and they were like, ‘We think you’re more correct for Karen,'” she said. “So I was like, ‘Oh god, Ok, sure.'”

Blake Lively has only appeared in one primetime television show over the course of her career, but it was a big one: She starred in Gossip Girl, which ran for six seasons on The CW. Prior to joining the show, she’d already had success as a film actor (most notably in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), but she’d managed to hold onto her relative anonymity. But with Gossip Girl came plenty of tabloid attention — first when she started dating Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgely, then when she started dating now-husband Ryan Reynolds. All of a sudden, a few years back Lively told us, she found herself with almost no privacy in public, which definitely took her by surprise. In 2014, Kartheiser explained that it was a priority for him that details of their relationship remain private. “It’s something I realized about the most important things in my life,” he told Vulture at the time. “If I share them with the world and I open that door...

Alexis Bledel, who has portrayed Emily/Ofglen on The Handmaid’s Tale since the Emmy-winning Hulu series launched in 2017, is exiting ahead of the upcoming fifth season.
“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” Bledel said in a statement provided to Deadline. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
In Season 4, June (Moss) struck back against Gilead as a fierce rebel leader, but the risks she took brought unexpected and dangerous new challenges. Her quest for justice and revenge threatens to consume her and destroy her most cherished relationships.
Season 5 is expected to premiere later this year.
Bledel has received four Emmy nominations and one win for outstanding guest actress for her portrayal of the key character, a nom for each year of her four-year run.
