Nakata directs Stone

6 November 2009 1:13 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Earlier this decade, director Hideo Nakata had a lot of things going for him. The American remake of his Japanese horror flick The Ring was a huge hit and launched a new sub-genre in Hollywood. A number of his films were tabbed for remakes and some made it through development (Dark Water) and some didn't (Chaos). But the J-horror genre started to play itself out and by the time Nakata made his English-language debut on The Ring 2, the movie was widely panned and Nakata's buzz stateside had... »

Palisades Tartan’s Asian Horror: Essential Collection Review

30 October 2009 3:34 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. The films in question, “Audition”, “Dark Water” and “The Eye” also provide a showcase for three highly acclaimed directors in the ever prolific Takashi Miike (still best known in the West for his infamous “Ichi the Killer”), The Pang Brothers (who recently headed for the Us themselves with “The Messengers” and a remake of their own “Bangkok Dangerous”) and Hideo Nakata, whose “Ringu” launched the new wave of Eastern horror. »

Cam Gigandet Admits to 'Tough, Dark And Dirty' Shoot On Psychological Thriller 'The Experiment'

8 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Over the years, we’ve seen our share of good American remakes of foreign films (“The Ring,” “Insomnia”) as well as some not-so-good ones (“The Eye,” “Dark Water,” “The Lake House”) that left a bad taste in our mouths. Recently, Cam Gigandet wrapped up his work on another high-profile translation to our shores, this time of “The Experiment,” and he promised us it will fall into that earlier category.

“I just finished a movie in Iowa called ‘The Experiment’ with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker,” the “Twilight” star said of the remake, which also stars Maggie Grace and Clifton Collins Jr. “We shot that in Iowa, in Des Moines, and that was a blast.”

Although it’s based on the acclaimed 2001 mind-bending German movie “Das Experiment,” the film is coming home in a morbid way. “Experiment” dramatizes the tale of a 1971 series of tests conducted on 24 undergraduates in the basement »

FilmShaft Diary: When Ed went to Frightfest

5 September 2009 4:02 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

For most of us the August Bank Holiday weekend means barbeques, beer on the village green and meeting up with the friends you’ve ignored for weeks but FilmShaft’s Ed Whitfield, having received no invitation to eat charcoaled meat went to London’s premier horror film festival instead. One week on, he’s finally ready to talk about what he saw there. Dare you read on?

I’m not a horror aficionado. Having cut my corneas on Huston, Hitchcock and Verhoven, there seemed to me something witless and crude about ninety percent of the genre’s staples. It was, from the perspective of a nervous boy who harboured night time fantasies about being eviscerated by burglars while his dear single mother was bludgeoned by their hands, and who still, in his thirties for God’s sake, bolts upright in bed at the odd creak, rustle or howl, never a genre that connoted entertainment. »

Too Funny, They are Remaking 'The Orphanage'

5 August 2009 1:47 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

As anyone that read my most recent installment of What I Watched, What You Watched already knows, I recently took in my first viewing of the great Spanish horror flick [Rec] and enjoyed every minute of it. As a result, at a recent film screening I got to talking to a few people about the remake, Quarantine, and now I'm not so sure I want to watch it, although I am interested in seeing Doug Jones work his magic at the end (that guy is incredible). We also got to talking about other horror remakes and how Hollywood is just cashing in on these things with films such as The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water and not to mention the rash of classic horrors being remade. Most recently is the upcoming remake of Let the Right One In from Cloverfield director Matt Reeves, which is currently titled Let Me In and »

The Author Of The Ring and Dark Water Brings You Toilet Horror.  While On The Toilet.

1 July 2009 7:25 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Not technically film news here - though given the history his books have of being adapted to film, it’s just a matter of time - but news of Koji Suzuki’s latest work is just too bizarre to pass up.  Suzuki, of course, is the author of The Ring and Dark Water, books that proved hugely influential on the world of horror after both were adapted into hugely successful films by Hideo Nakata.  His latest?  Drop, the “alarming story of an evil spirit that inhabits a toilet bowl” - try not to think about that description in context of the title - recently published in Japan by Hayashi Paper.  And Hayashi Paper?  They specialize in one specific type of paper.  Toilet paper.  Yes, the latest Suzuki story has been published on rolls of toilet paper, perfect for a bit of private-time reading.

More Zombies Set to Invade the Big Screen

10 June 2009 10:39 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Dark Hero Studios partners David Hayter, co-writer of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, and Benedict Carver have joined with Pandemonium's Bill Mechanic to turn the Deadworld comic book series into a zombie feature franchise, say the trades. Deadworld veers from the popular zombie mythology of depicting an apocalypse in which humans are overrun by flesh-eating corpses. Deadworld picks up four months after that event, where the Dead overtake the Earth, with humans few and far between. The protagonist is King Zombie, a Harley-riding corpse who holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast. Hayter, whose other screenwriting credits include X-Men, X2 and The Scorpion King, will pen the screenplay for Deadworld, and he and Mechanic will produce with Framelight's Robert L. Robinson Jr. and Jeffrey D. Erb. Gary Reed, who wrote and co-created the comic, will executive produce. Mechanic, who ran Fox when Hayter wrote the first X-Men film, »

The Terror on the Toilet

27 May 2009 12:23 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When's the last time a short story scared the crap out of you? Japanese author Kôji Suzuki (of the original Dark Water and The Ring) seems to be aiming for as much. According to Dread Central, he has written "Drop," a setting-suitable novella that comes printed on rolls of toilet paper. Each roll comes with multiple copies of the story, so no need for cries of anguish when the tee-pee runs out before the twist is revealed.

But seriously, folks, before this metaphor gets too corny and starts to stink, what are some of your favorite short stories that were adapted successfully to the big screen? Can you name any that you think are ripe for a film version? I'm not sure if it's short enough to count, but I'm still waiting on Frank Darabont to give us Richard Bachman's Stephen King's The Long Walk, after doing a »

'Buffy' Flick Gets Revived (Sans Whedon!)

26 May 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The original Buffy was a silly early '90s flick featuring Kristy Swanson, dreamy Luke Perry as her Bf Pike, Rutger Hauer as the bad vamp about town Lothos, a post-Pee Wee Paul Reubens as one of his henchmen, and Donald Sutherland as a told-ya-so! dude named Merrick who warned her she was a predestined kicker of vampire ass. Blink-and-miss-it cameos include Hilary Swank, Ben Affleck, gossip columnist Liz Smith, David Arquette, and Ricki Lake. Really.

Now Buffy is getting a 21st century transfusion with help from the original director Fran Rubel Kuzui and producer Kaz Kuzui to create "what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel," according to Hollywood Reporter. So with that very oblique description in mind, it looks like this will be a sort of different incarnation of Buffy -- a different vampire "warrior" for a different generation. One with "franchise potential, »

J-Horror Tale Unravels on Toilet Paper

26 May 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

The latest horror story from the author behind "Ringu," "Dream Cruise" and "Dark Water" won't be found in Japanese book stores next month. Instead it will be told on a roll of toilet paper. Koji Suzuki's nine-chapter novella "Drop" - a thriller set in a public restroom - takes up about three feet of Hayashi Paper-printed toilet paper. A roll is going for 210 yen, just a bit over two bucks. We're sure, somewhere, there's a Hollywood studio exec looking into the American screen rights now. »

Exclusive: Doug Hutchison Talks Vampire Killers

20 May 2009 12:33 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

To read “From the mind of Doug Hutchison”, for genre fans anyway, is an invitation to be freaked out. The actor, who has given horror fans such memorable characters as Eugene Victor Tooms in two episodes of “The X Files” – “Squeeze” and “Tooms” (both in Season One of the show), Percy Wetmore, one of Stephen King’s more horrific villains, in Frank Darabont’s The Green Mile and most recently, Henry Victor, the racist and borderline sociopathic Army officer in Jt Petty’s, The Burrowers, is also a writer And serious horror fan himself.

Beginning in October 2008, under the banner of his own production company, Dark Water, Hutchison launched a web series entitled, "Vampire Killers". Set in modern day Los Angeles, the premise is that in a city the size of La, with a vampire population of over 500,000, there are only 4 vampire killers to deal with the problem. And a problem this is indeed. »

Some news out of the Cannes Film Festival this afternoon, as The Hollywood Reporter says indie production company Green Knight Ventures will soon begin lensing an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall Of The House Of Usher... in 3D.

Claire Forlani (Mallrats, Meet Joe Black), Dougray Scott (Dark Water, Hitman) and Rufus Sewell (Vinyan, Dark City) will star in the film titled The Ushers. Stephen Kay (Boogeyman) is attached to direct.

THR says:

"Ushers" will look at a grown brother and sister who have lived in the same Martha's Vineyard house for a long time but begin to feel trapped there, and who then bring in a real-estate broker to help them resolve their crisis.

Look for more on this as it develops. »
