10 hours ago | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Legendary actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood is still cranking them out as he nears 80 friggin' years of age, and is back behind the camera shooting his Invictus star Matt Damon on a new supernatural thriller called Hereafter. Now there's a lady in the mix: Belgian actress Cecile de France, perhaps best known as the pixie-haired star of Alex Aja's High Tension (Haute Tension), has also joined the project from writer Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) and exec producer Steven Spielberg.... »

Raising Hell: Style vs. Substance in The House Of The Devil

3 November 2009 3:22 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Having been bombarded with hype-filled reviews, I went into The House Of The Devil with high expectations. Unfortunately, I came away from the film feeling as disappointed as I felt after watching Oren Peli's over-hyped Paranormal Activity (which may have worked as a short film that took place over three nights, but was simply excruciatingly at feature length).

Ti West undeniably captured the look, sound and feel of indie horror films from the late '70s and early '80s. It's too bad that a lot of reviewers seem to have been so overcome with the film's style that they neglected to point out how little substance the film has. I guess I should have known better, given the trend in recent years where film analysis being replaced with how a film either appeals to or offends a reviewer's sense of nostalgia in what are supposed to be film reviews. »

Korean Horror - Essential Collection From Palisades Tartan

26 October 2009 10:24 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

Palisades Tartan brings together three Korean chillers as a three-disc collection that includes Kim Sung-ho's Into The Mirror, Park Ki-hyung's Acacia and Won Shin-yeon's The Wig.

Recently given the Hollywood remake treatment as ‘Mirrors', directed by Alexandre Aja (Switchblade Romance; The Hills Have Eyes) and starring Keifer Sutherland, Kim Sung-ho's Into The Mirror is a creepy and highly stylized horror tale involving Wu Young-min, a cop who has quit the police force after inadvertently killing his partner. Now working at a department store, Wu encounters his ex-rival, who is in charge of investigating a series of murders at the store, and finds himself being pulled into the sinister investigation.

Park Ki-hyung's Acacia tells of an obstetrician and his wife who, unable to have a child of their own, decide to adopt a 10-year-old boy, Jin-seung. When the wife later falls pregnant and has a baby, Jin-seung becomes so incensed by jealousy he runs away. »

Fall Frights: The Hills Have Eyes (2006; Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 03/03/2006

Say this for the recent trend toward remaking horror favorites from the ’70s: It’s likely that projects as unremittingly grisly and brutal as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn Of The Dead and now The Hills Have Eyes might have had a lot more trouble getting in the studio doors were they not based on recognizable known quantities. Whatever one thinks of their overall quality, it has to be acknowledged that the Chainsaw and Dawn reduxes made honorable attempts to recapture the intensity of their forebears. But the 21st-century Hills is the first of this group to outdo its predecessor, elaborating on Wes Craven’s original in ways that both honor and improve upon it, with genuinely bloodcurdling results.

Fango Frightfan Filmmaker goes to Big Bear

7 October 2009 4:30 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Deep in the beautiful woods near La there is yet another film festival. This one is the Big Bear Horror Festival – a wonderfully horrible and scary 3 day event. Two years ago, sadly, the Big Bear Festival was cancelled due to wild fires in the area – the down side of being in the woods near La. If I lived on the west coast, I would certainly be in attendance this year, however I am a New Yorker through and through so I need to stick to our east coast Horror events. It does sound way beautiful I must admit and hopefully will go on as planned on October 18th.

The reason I write about all this is that one of our Frightfan Filmmakers Vito Dinatolo and his film John have been accepted into the festival. John is a very well shot and executed film and everyone will be able to see »

Halloween 3D Slated for Summer 2010 Without Rob Zombie

30 August 2009 2:27 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Over the weekend, the conclusion to Rob Zombie's fresh take on the franchise, Halloween II, grossed $17 million. Budgeted at $15 million, the sequel would likely have grossed much more if not for direct competition with the weekend's top movie and debut, The Final Destination 3D (a very healthy $28m). Today, the rebounding Weinstein Company announced a new, eleventh installment that is already in the planning stages. Entitled, not-so-curiously, Halloween 3D, it's slated for release next summer. According to the La Times, Dimension's Bob Weinstein offered that Zombie would not be back, as expected per his upcoming The Blob, and that a new director is in talks, one with experience in horror and a "different take" on Michael Myers. Note: /Film commenter, DrChicago, guesses that Alexandre Aja (High Tension) may be the director in line to take over the franchise. This is a great guess because Aja is currently finishing up »

Rapped & Tagged: Necro speaks!

18 August 2009 12:37 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In a Fangoria Musick Exclusive, Matt Molgaard tracks down legendary Brooklyn rapper Necro to discuss his unique brand of Death Rap; his plans for the corpse of Michael Jackson; his distain for the world of "horrorcore"; and the fright films that continue to inspire.

Read on for the interview in this installment of Rapped & Tagged...

Matt Molgaard/Fangoria: First off Necro, let's talk about some of the things that have inspired you throughout your career, whether it be music, movies - fact or fiction, what helps fuel you as an artist?

Necro: Dead cadaver, that's the biggest influence hands down, rotted corpse covered in mucus, especially if its a cop's body, that adds to the pleasure.

Fango: You've enjoyed quite a bit of success throughout the years. Have you found it to be a bigger battle to obtain that success because you cater to fans of the horrorcore sub-genre of rap, »

Sick Girl

Dear Sick Girl, I'm not sure what made me fall in love you or why we came together, but I do know that I'll never be the same because of you.  People say there's no such thing as love at first sight but after seeing you, I'd have to say people don't really know much about nothing. Was it your pretty face or family values that lured me into your heart? Or maybe it was in the way you'd clean blood off your body and clothes, knowing quite well that it was only a matter of time before it was blood soaked again.   Perhaps it was the relationship between you and your brother that made me realize what I wanted from us.  The way you'd defend him to your last breath, the way your face lit up when you spoke his name "Rusty", the way you backed your ass into »

Critical response: Owen Gleiberman's not afraid to defend his horror list

7 August 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Take your seats, class: Movie critic Owen Gleiberman is taking on some of your, um, "concerns" about his gallery of 20 Top Horror Films of the Last 20 Years.  Read his rebuttal as he wraps up his exploration of horror movies for week 6 of EW University and check out this week's classes on legendary horror flicks Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Stick around all summer long for future EW University courses on Quentin Tarantino, vampires, and more. Owen Gleiberman's response to readers: When I decided to put together my list of the Top 20 horror films of the past 20 years, I knew that just by being honest -- sticking true to the movies I find most scary, spooky, disturbing, unsettling, scary-funny, or just plain horrifying -- I would inevitably inspire catcalls of outrage, righteous denunciations, and cries for my critical head. Weekend Report: 'Funny People' More Pauper Than King of Comedy

3 August 2009 2:34 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

If this weekend's box office were a comedian, it might have been heckled off the stage, mostly for its dullness. Between the main new release, Funny People, which always had sketchy prospects despite high profile talent, and the cumulative effect of a relatively soft July slate, overall business amounted to $127.6 million, which was off 17 percent from the same weekend last year and low for the time of the year. What's more, the summer as a whole became on par with last summer through the same point, dwindling from the lead it had racked up in May and June. Headlining the weak weekend, Funny People drew $22.7 million on approximately 4,100 screens at 3,007 sites, which was significantly less than director Judd Apatow's previous picture, Knocked Up, and even behind his first, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in terms of attendance. By lead actor Adam Sandler's standards, the debut was poor for one of his comedies, »

Fantasia: Days 16 Through 18

27 July 2009 6:25 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The final weekend of Fantasia delivered in spades. The screenings divided audiences, prompted walkouts, and had viewers rolling in the aisles and salting their popcorn with tears of joy celebrating the rebirth of Coffin Joe.

On Friday just about everyone was split in their opinions of The Children and Deadgirl, which led to a lot of hotheaded arguing over drinks. Some folks thought The Children" target="_blank">The Children (review here) was the best horror movie of the year; whereas others found it boring, unbelievable, and confusing. Paul and I fell into the latter camp.

Deadgirl was a lot less contentious, as just about everyone found it to be an unintelligent, misogynistic, and heavily watered down film. My assessment is slightly more forgiving, as I thought the premise was intriguing, even if it was mostly wasted. It’s a shame the directors decided to spend so much time on the more commercial, »

We Go Fishing for 'Piranha' with Alexandre Aja

20 July 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Alexandre Aja is one of the easiest interviews in which a genre journalist can take part. The man's love of horror movies is so unapologetic, so open – and so contagious – that he reminds interviewers why they first fell in love with movies. Aja is also, thankfully, one-hundred-and-eighty degrees removed from the sort of director that seems embarrassed by horror, or somehow convinced their films "transcend" it. That's not to say he doesn't have some smart ideas wedged into movies like High Tension and his remake of The Hills Have Eyes, but he's not one to get pretentious about them. He's too busy doing his job of making scary-ass fright flicks. Aja's next movie will be his most... »
