Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter Takes on Death, Adds High Tension Star

10 November 2009 2:36 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Clint Eastwood is less than a month from releasing his next film, Invictus, which stars Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman in a story about Nelson Mandela and the South African rugby team. But as we found out last year when Eastwood unleashed Changeling and Gran Torino, he's not satisfied with just one movie per year. He has also begun working on his next film, Hereafter. This new project will also star Matt Damon and will take on the subject of death, and how it affects different people in different ways. According to a report last night from Variety, it will also now star High Tension heroine Cecile de France. As for the exact story, I will leave that to a report from The Guardian: The film tells three parallel stories that eventually intersect – about a French TV journalist, played by Cecile de France, who suffers a near-death experience during the Asian tsunami of 2004; a drug-addicted English single »

High Tension’s Cecile de France Joins Eastwood’s Hereafter

10 November 2009 11:32 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Clint Eastwood works fast. He had two films out last year, Changeling and Gran Torino. He's got Invictus opening next month, but is already shooting his next picture, called Hereafter. That one, written by Peter Morgan, is one we haven't reported on too much yet, but features Matt Damon in a story of "of three people who are touched by death in different ways." We'd heard but hadn't reported that Cecile de France, the violent lead from High Tension, would be part of the film as well. Now that's confirmed by the trades, so I'm using the report as an excuse to bring us all up to date on the film. Variety has the casting report. The Playlist had actually pegged that last month, along with the casting of Thierry Neuvic (Tell No One) and Mylène Jampanoï for the French part of the production. The story has three components, two »

Update on Eastwood’s Hereafter: De France Joins, Plot Details

10 November 2009 10:55 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Clint Eastwood’s Invictus is only a few months away, and already he has begun shooting his next project, Hereafter, scheduled for a December 2010 release. According to Variety, Belgium actress Cecile de France, who has starred in movies such as High Tension and Russian Dolls, has joined a cast that already includes Matt Damon. Hereafter is a supernatural thriller in the same fashion as Sixth Sense. First Showing did some digging and found a plot synopsis from The Guardian. The story follows three parallel tracks, first with de France’s French TV journalist who nearly dies in the 2004 Asian tsunami, then Lyndsey Marshal as a drug-addicted mother who loses a son in a car accident, and finally Matt Damon as the reluctant medium who can contact the other side. The tsunami aspect sounds like it would offer the most interesting horror angle: I think that just about everybody has a very inherent fear of drowning. »

New Ultra-Gory Pics from Piranha 3D

10 November 2009 10:26 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When I first heard that Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Haute Tension) was writing and directing a remake of the classic 70’s Joe Dante film Piranha, I thought “Hmmm. This could be a good thing.” Then I read that he was doing it in 3D and I thought “Dang! I thought this could be a good thing; guess I was wrong.”

The remake, cleverly titled Piranha 3D, is set in the fictional location of Lake Victoria during spring break (think Lake Havasu), and after a underwater earthquake releases a prehistoric flesh-eating fish, “an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.” Sherriff Julie Forester must risk all that she loves and knows to destroy the piranha “save the lake and her family from totally being devoured.”

DeFrance and Damon Join Clint Eastwood’s ‘Hereafter’

10 November 2009 5:39 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The Informant himself, Matt Damon, will be joining forces with Belgian actress Cecile De France to star in director Clint Eastwood’s “supernatural drama” titled Hereafter.

Written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, Bond 23), Hereafter centers around “three people who are touched by death in different ways. De France, whose credits include High Tension and Russian Dolls, will portray a French journalist who has a near-death experience.”

The film began production last month, and will continue to film all across the world in  Paris, London, San Francisco and Hawaii. Don’t expect to see Hereafter come to light until December of next year.

Personally, I’m excited to see Eastwood branch out from the real world a bit and try his hand at something new. Ideally, though, he’d direct himself in a remake of Every Which Way But Loose. That would be brilliant.

Raising Hell: Style vs. Substance in The House Of The Devil

3 November 2009 3:22 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Having been bombarded with hype-filled reviews, I went into The House Of The Devil with high expectations. Unfortunately, I came away from the film feeling as disappointed as I felt after watching Oren Peli's over-hyped Paranormal Activity (which may have worked as a short film that took place over three nights, but was simply excruciatingly at feature length).

Ti West undeniably captured the look, sound and feel of indie horror films from the late '70s and early '80s. It's too bad that a lot of reviewers seem to have been so overcome with the film's style that they neglected to point out how little substance the film has. I guess I should have known better, given the trend in recent years where film analysis being replaced with how a film either appeals to or offends a reviewer's sense of nostalgia in what are supposed to be film reviews. »

Korean Horror - Essential Collection From Palisades Tartan

26 October 2009 10:24 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

Palisades Tartan brings together three Korean chillers as a three-disc collection that includes Kim Sung-ho's Into The Mirror, Park Ki-hyung's Acacia and Won Shin-yeon's The Wig.

Recently given the Hollywood remake treatment as ‘Mirrors', directed by Alexandre Aja (Switchblade Romance; The Hills Have Eyes) and starring Keifer Sutherland, Kim Sung-ho's Into The Mirror is a creepy and highly stylized horror tale involving Wu Young-min, a cop who has quit the police force after inadvertently killing his partner. Now working at a department store, Wu encounters his ex-rival, who is in charge of investigating a series of murders at the store, and finds himself being pulled into the sinister investigation.

Park Ki-hyung's Acacia tells of an obstetrician and his wife who, unable to have a child of their own, decide to adopt a 10-year-old boy, Jin-seung. When the wife later falls pregnant and has a baby, Jin-seung becomes so incensed by jealousy he runs away. »

Fall Frights: The Hills Have Eyes (2006; Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:28 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 03/03/2006

Say this for the recent trend toward remaking horror favorites from the ’70s: It’s likely that projects as unremittingly grisly and brutal as the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn Of The Dead and now The Hills Have Eyes might have had a lot more trouble getting in the studio doors were they not based on recognizable known quantities. Whatever one thinks of their overall quality, it has to be acknowledged that the Chainsaw and Dawn reduxes made honorable attempts to recapture the intensity of their forebears. But the 21st-century Hills is the first of this group to outdo its predecessor, elaborating on Wes Craven’s original in ways that both honor and improve upon it, with genuinely bloodcurdling results.

Fango Frightfan Filmmaker goes to Big Bear

7 October 2009 4:30 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Deep in the beautiful woods near La there is yet another film festival. This one is the Big Bear Horror Festival – a wonderfully horrible and scary 3 day event. Two years ago, sadly, the Big Bear Festival was cancelled due to wild fires in the area – the down side of being in the woods near La. If I lived on the west coast, I would certainly be in attendance this year, however I am a New Yorker through and through so I need to stick to our east coast Horror events. It does sound way beautiful I must admit and hopefully will go on as planned on October 18th.

The reason I write about all this is that one of our Frightfan Filmmakers Vito Dinatolo and his film John have been accepted into the festival. John is a very well shot and executed film and everyone will be able to see »

Halloween 3D Slated for Summer 2010 Without Rob Zombie

30 August 2009 2:27 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Over the weekend, the conclusion to Rob Zombie's fresh take on the franchise, Halloween II, grossed $17 million. Budgeted at $15 million, the sequel would likely have grossed much more if not for direct competition with the weekend's top movie and debut, The Final Destination 3D (a very healthy $28m). Today, the rebounding Weinstein Company announced a new, eleventh installment that is already in the planning stages. Entitled, not-so-curiously, Halloween 3D, it's slated for release next summer. According to the La Times, Dimension's Bob Weinstein offered that Zombie would not be back, as expected per his upcoming The Blob, and that a new director is in talks, one with experience in horror and a "different take" on Michael Myers. Note: /Film commenter, DrChicago, guesses that Alexandre Aja (High Tension) may be the director in line to take over the franchise. This is a great guess because Aja is currently finishing up »

Matt Molgaard/Fangoria: First off Necro, let's talk about some of the things that have inspired you throughout your career, whether it be music, movies - fact or fiction, what helps fuel you as an artist?

Necro: Dead cadaver, that's the biggest influence hands down, rotted corpse covered in mucus, especially if its a cop's body, that adds to the pleasure.

Fango: You've enjoyed quite a bit of success throughout the years. Have you found it to be a bigger battle to obtain that success because you cater to fans of the horrorcore sub-genre of rap, »
