Alien Encounters – Television's Memorable Extra-Terrestrials

30 October 2009 10:12 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Anna, the face of the Visitors - V

With the upcoming launch of "V",  it makes it the perfect time to reminisce about our favorite aliens of yore.   The extra-terrestrials who land on earth seem to come in three varieties:  aggressors, refugees, and observers.   But whether they have come to Earth with world domination on their minds, or they simply want to study the local ugly giant bags of mostly water, they almost always seem to stick around for a while.

So click-through and check out some of TVOvermind's favorite, and not so favorite aliens on television.

Aggressors

We've got a pretty nice planet here.  And they want it.  They want our resources; they consider us to be lower life forms and want us to supplement their food supply; they just want us dead.  No matter how you slice it, we are going to have a fight on our hands. »

Syfy Has Historic Month Of October Ratings

28 October 2009 4:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Syfy had themselves a record-setting month in October.

The 5th season of Ghost Hunters is averaging 3 million viewers.

The much debated Stargate Universe is averaging 2.85 million viewers, and doing much better than the last season of Stargate Atlantis. Sgu is currently bringing in 36% more total viewers than Sga, but then again, it’s early in the season, so I’m not holding my breath on any numbers holding up for the entire season.

Destination Truth’s 3rd season is averaging 2.2 million viewers.

Scare Tactics, though only averaging 1.56 million viewers in the Fall 2009 season, it’s up 42% from the 2008 season.

And finally, the surprise statistic for me is that Sanctuary is pulling in an average of 2.4 million viewers.

All of these numbers have added up to Syfy’s most-watched October prime in the history of the network.

“Syfy jumped to #3 in A25-54 and #4 among A18-49 versus all basic cable »

Stargate Universe and Sanctuary Lead SyFy to Record Ratings

27 October 2009 1:29 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The execs at SyFy are glowing, and the publicists are gushing.  Word from the cable channel this morning is that they are turning in their best ratings yet, largely based on the strength of the Stargate Universe, Sanctuary, Ghost Hunters, and Destination Truth numbers.

Stargate Universe continues to be a mega-contender in the Friday night cable numbers, drawing in a staggering 2.85 million live viewers – up 36% from predecessor Stargate Atlantis.  The continued comparisons of "smarter, younger, edgier, etc" continue to rile fans of the classic formula, but Stargate Universe seems to be deliver on the show's mission to attract new viewers to the franchise with its character intensive plots.

Sanctuary also more than pulled its weight, bringing in up to 2.4 million live viewers and improving on its previous season in terms of targeted viewer age.  Ghost Hunters appears to be the crown jewel, snaring an even 3 million live viewers, heavily concentrated »

Viff 09: Review of Leslie, My Name Is Evil

9 October 2009 1:35 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2009

Directors: Reginald Harkema

Writers: Reginald Harkema

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: Marina Antunes

Rating: 8 out of 10

[Editor's note: Special thanks to our friend Marina from Row Three for the following review!]

While introducing the first screening of his film at Viff, director Reginald Harkema commented that Leslie, My Name is Evil was a very divisive film. He wasn’t kidding.

Taken from real accounts and transcripts of the Charles Manson trial, using archival footage and intermingling the entire thing with a wicked sense of humour, this is the type of film that would, by any other director, end as a total disaster. The fact that it not only ends well but that it starts off with a bang is a great credit to director Reg Harkema who manages to create a sometimes serious and sometimes hysterical but always entertaining film which pokes a finger at everything from war to religion.

The story interweaves Leslie’s experience with cult life with that of Perry, »

Hugh Jackman In Talks For Real Steel

1 October 2009 3:49 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Hugh Jackman is in talks to star in Shawn Levy's futuristic robot boxing film, Real Steel.

Real Steel is based on a short story by Richard Matheson, and was originally adapted for the big screen by scriptwriter Dan Gilroy (The Fall), but has since been rewritten by Leslie Bohem (Taken, Dante's Peak) and John Gatins (Summer Catch, Dreamer).

The story centres on a father and his estranged 13-year-old son who enter the world of robotic boxing as, in the future, human boxing has been outlawed and replaced with sports combat between human-trained 2000-pound heavy steel robots.

According to Variety, Jackman is in talks to play the father's role, an ex-fighter turned promoter whose "access to sub-standard robot parts hampers his hopes for glory in Robot Boxing, until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win."

It's an interesting and original concept, so here's hoping that it is dealt with properly. »

Interview: Matt Frewer on 'Eureka', 'Alice' and Acting to the Max

17 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Canadian actor Matt Frewer is probably best known for portraying that icon of 1980s computer animation and music videos, Max Headroom. Headroom's jerks and stutters are but a small sample of this talented and versatile actor's work, though.

On the big screen Frewer's credits go back to Franc Roddam's The Lords of Discipline (1983) and include such diverse material as Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Frankie and Alice (with Halle Barry), Uwe Boll's Darfur and two films for director Zack Snyder: Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen.

Frewer has also portrayed Sherlock Holmes in several television movies and appeared in a long list of TV series. He was a regular on Doctor, Doctor, CBC’s Intelligence and Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal (for which he also wrote a script). He has lent his distinctive voice to characters in animated adventures of The Incredible Hulk, »

Martyn’s Top Ten Disturbing Films

17 September 2009 4:40 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

It is rarely highlighted what a strange habit and practice cinema-going is. Off we go to sit in a darkened room, usually with complete strangers, and watch something akin to a dream unfold before us. After all, Hollywood in particular, has been known as “The Dream Factory”. Why restrict it to Hollywood? Cinema = dreams. And as the subconscious plays havoc; dreams can turn into nightmares.

Audiences can laugh, cry and scream together. Each person maybe processing information in a variety of differing ways, yet, filmmakers employ a bag of tricks to invoke particular responses, at particular times.

Film experiences have a habit of becoming cherished, personal memories. It can achieve an ambiguous effect. Millions were astounded by Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, just as they were terrified by Jaws, seventeen years earlier. Alfred Hitchcock devised the infamous shower sequence in Psycho relying on suggestion, chocolate sauce, rapid editing and shrieking »

Robert Redford Takes On Lincoln Assassination Movie

18 August 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The guys over at Risky Business Blog are reporting that Robert Redford is going to be directing a movie based on Mary Surratt, the alleged conspirator of John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. There’s reportedly been much interest in Lincoln’s life story around Hollywood - even Steven Spielberg is attached to direct a biopic about the 16th U.S. President (but that project has been gestating for quite a while).

Redford, meanwhile, is set to direct the historical drama The Conspirator from a script written by James Solomon, who’s most notable work is the TV series The Bronx is Burning, which was set in another politically turbulent time, the summer of 1977. Redford’s got a keen interest in politics, and one of the film’s producers, Greg Shapiro, produced the recent war film, The Hurt Locker. Redford and Shapiro working with Solomon means »

Multiple Personality Disorder Report: The Scifi Edition

30 July 2009 8:29 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

There's no denying it, science fiction is coming back in a big way. Not only is there more science fiction finding its way into independent and foreign cinema than ever before (read as: Moon, Sleep Dealer, Cargo, China's first ever, Chengdu), but Hollywood seems to have more than a few franchisable blockbusters on the horizon. With all this action happening on the scifi front we couldn't help but bring you this special report on all the upcoming science fiction projects that have us pumped right now.

#1: Eagle Eye director to helm "Dead Space"

Whether or not D.J. Caruso has the chops to handle a big screen adaptation of Electronic Arts' hit video game, Dead Space, is up for debate, but the fact that it's even on the table right now makes us excited. Gears of War and Dead Space movies? My tiny brain can't handle it! [via: Bd]

Push Blu-ray Review

7 July 2009 1:28 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

About midway through Push (2009), I lost interest in trying to figure out exactly what was going on with the ever growing roster of psychic characters and multiplying plot threads and turned my mental faculties off to wallow in the vibrant visuals and well executed action sequences. Director Paul McGuigan (Wicker Park, Lucky # Slevin) has attempted to capitalize on the comic book/super hero craze that has gained hold of Hollywood as of late seemingly taking inspiration from NBC's Heroes (the X-Men movies are another obvious influence). Unfortunately he also appears to have inherited some of the show's impenetrable plot and the notion that if a few participants are good, more must be better. The following is a high level recap though considering the amount of convolution, I very well may have gotten something wrong: Kira (Camilla Belle) is a "pusher" (able to implant memories in other's minds) and the only »

This week, we take a look at some noise about Chuck, news about some Dexter casting, the premiere date for Eureka on Sci-Fi (SyFy) and why Eleventh Hour got dumped.

While we’re at it, I also chat about TNT ordering it’s own version of V, Doctor Who guest starring in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and if there are any Gigantor fans out there, I’ve got a bit of news for you.

And of course, at the end of the article, I entice you with a ratings chart showing how our favored shows did last week.

New 'V' Full Length Trailer

21 May 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

ABC has released a full length trailer for the Vancouver-shot V, a re-imagining of the 1980's miniseries about the world's first encounter with an alien race who call themselves The Visitors, and have a seemingly friendly agenda that may or may not be a cover for something far more malevolent.

V is part of the network's 2009-2010 primetime schedule. ABC's Stephen McPherson stated that V will be premiering with an order of 13 episodes at midseason. "We want to craft a whole series," McPherson said when unveiling ABC's 2009-2010 schedule. "At this point we believe the show will be four parts, with each consisting of anywhere from 13 to 22 episodes," McPherson says. "It will have beginning, middle and end."

V is executive produced by Scott Peters. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell as an FBI agent—who most will recognize from her role as Juliet Burke on ABC's Lost; Joel Gretsch (who starred »

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" - 2-Disc Criterion Collection Blu-ray review.

4 May 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

The 2-Disc Criterion Collection Blu-ray reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor A compelling, superbly acted and meticulously-directed project now sees release on Blu-ray. I have always admired David Fincher as a director; the Colorado-born helmer is responsible for such films as “Alien³,” “Panic Room,” “Fight Club” and the most recent “Zodiac” with Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. It’s good to see the talented Julia Ormond returning the screen in quality films once again. Here she takes the part of Caroline, a middle-aged woman supporting her mother Daisy (Cate Blanchett) in her last ailing days at the hospital. She’s asked to read a story and thus unfolds a remarkable telling of a man “Born under unusual circumstances.” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is a strange case indeed; a child, born of old age, shriveled and exhibiting signs of a man on death’s bed, suffering from bad »

First Set Photo From 'The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn'

ABC's 'V' Adds Cast

13 March 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

ABC's new V pilot — which began lensing here in Vancouver on Friday — is beginning to feel a little like a reunion of sorts. We already know that former 4400 creator/producer Scott Peters wrote and is exec producing the series pilot, but now comes word that Joel Gretsch has been added to the cast.

Gretsch plays a Catholic priest who observes a rebirth of faith after the Visitors hit town.

Gretsch, of course, played agent Tom Baldwin on The 4400 (which also shot in Vancouver) and was most recently directed by Peters in the second season episode of Burn Notice, "Seek and Destroy".

Frankly, it sounds like an inspired bit of casting. Gretsch really showed his antagonistic chops playing Owen Crawford in Steven Spielberg's 2002 miniseries Taken, then flipped over to play the protagonist in The 4400, so it's easy to imagine him playing a conflicted priest juxtaposed against the momentous arrival of alien visitors. »

Weekend Box Office Report: March 6-8: Watching the Watchmen

8 March 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- It’s not like I wanted it to fail.  It’s not like I knew it wouldn’t succeed.  There is a part of me though that is tickled to see that Watchmen hasn’t shattered any records upon its highly anticipated release.  I am even more amused to see the film’s devout followers defend its sizable but hardly sizzling debut.  After all,Watchmen is the third highest opening weekend for an R-rated film outside of the summer season.  That matters, right? Realistically speaking, Watchmen did do well.  It just didn’t do what was expected.  Opening in the same frame two years ago, Zack Snyder’s breakthrough film, 300, opening to about $15 million more than Watchmen did.  Advance buzz seemed just as deafening as it did for 300 and midnight screenings for Watchmen doubled the gross of 300’s midnight screenings.  Everything seemed on track as reports suggested that most »

'He's Just Not That Into You' So Into North American Box Office

8 February 2009 7:48 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Debuted in theaters on Friday, February 6, star-studded romantic comedy "He's Just Not That Into You" has exceeded expectation and taken over the top slot at the North American box office over the weekend. Earning $7 million more than second place "Taken", the film based on the popular bestseller book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo opened with $27.9 million bow.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers, "He's Just Not That Into You" is the latest movie led by strong female characters to have scored big at the box office, following the footsteps of "Sex and the City", "Twilight" and "Mamma Mia!". "Women continue to drive box office in a big way," he said. "And we still continue to, mistakenly, underestimate the power of the female audience."

While this week 80% of the audience was female, Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman believed that more guys will be heading to »
