Final box-office figures Monday upheld box office estimates for Hannibal, confirming that the MGM film had indeed edged out last year's Mission: Impossible II as the third-biggest debut ever. MGM's Hannibal feasted off the biggest opening box office for an R-rated movie ever, grossing $58 million, according to studio estimates. If the figures stand, the film will edge out last year's Mission: Impossible II ($57.9 million) as the third-biggest debut ever, behind only 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($72 million) and 1999's Star Wars: Episode One: The Phantom Menace ($64.8 million). The take was especially impressive given the movie's February release. The previous February record was held by last year's Scream 3, which earned $34.7 million. (In fact, the film earned more money than any film ever released during a non-summer month.) In an interview with today's (Monday) New York Times, Exhibitor Relations chief Paul Dergarabedian remarked, "It just goes to show that you can have a record-breaking opening any time of the year." Expectations are also high for the film to devour the box office next weekend -- President's Day weekend. Meeting with reporters at the Berlin Film Festival, Dino De Laurentiis, the producer of Hannibal, said that he had spoken to director Ridley Scott and that the two had decided to proceed with a third Hannibal movie within the next year that would not be based on a book by novelist Thomas Harris. Previously there had been speculation that De Laurentiis would produce a new version of Harris' Red Dragon, originally presented on the screen as Manhunter in 1986 featuring Brian Cox as Lecter. De Laurentiis said Sunday that Anthony Hopkins had asked to appear in the sequel.
The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. Hannibal, $58 million; 2. The Wedding Planner, $7.8 million; 3. Saving Silverman, $7.4 million; 4. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, $5.1 million; 5. Cast Away, $5 million; 6. Save the Last Dance, $4.8 million; 7. Traffic, $4.4 million; 8. Valentine, $3.8 million; 9. Chocolat, $3.1 million; 10. O Brother, Where Art Thou?, $3 million. »

The Christian action movie Left Behind, starring former Growing Pains actor Kirk Cameron, from Cloud Ten Pictures and Namesake Entertainment, opened in 17th place with $2.2 million. The poorly reviewed film (the Los Angeles Daily News critic Glenn Whipp commented that the film "is so awful that even true believers will have difficulty staying awake.") had been watched as a possible indicator of how Christian-themed films, promoted largely among church groups and other religious organizations, might perform at the box office among mainstream audiences. Peter Lalonde CEO of Cloud Ten told the online entertainment magazine Inside ''The film was sold out in the markets where we had good ground support, but didn't perform as well in some of the other areas."
The Wedding Planner, Sony, $10, 605, 542, ($27, 763, 988); 2. Valentine, Warner Bros., $10, 024, 648, (New); 3. Cast Away, 20th Century Fox, $7, 469, 464, ($203, 010, 647); 4. The slasher movie Valentine came within striking distance of debuting in first place at the box office last weekend. The Warner Bros. movie earned $10 million, just behind the $10.6 million taken in by Sony/Columbia's The Wedding Planner. Twentieth Century Fox's Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks was in third place with $7.5 million, to bring its gross past the $200-million mark to $203 million after seven weeks. Paramount's Save the Last Dance fell to fourth place from second with $7.2 million, while Sony Pictures Classics' Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon moved up to fifth with $6.8 million. (The Chinese-language film has now grossed $53 million after nine weeks and should pass the record for a foreign-language film of $56 million set in 1999 by Life Is Beautiful. In an interview with the Associated Press, Exhibitor Relations chief Paul Dergarabedian remarked, "It's really unprecedented for a film like Crouching Tiger to do this kind of business. ... It's an arthouse movie with subtitles, but it has a lot of really intense action, a really unique visual style. It's an action picture but with a love story and strong female characters, so there's crossover appeal to women.") »

In yet another demonstration of how inconsequential movie reviewers may be at affecting the box office, a poorly reviewed film claimed the top spot for the second week in a row, while the second spot was nabbed by a movie that was not reviewed at all. (The New York Post's Lou Lumenick, who saw the movie on Saturday, commented that it seemed to inspire "more yawns than screams.") According to studio estimates, Sony/Columbia's Jennifer Lopez-Matthew McConaughey starrer The Wedding Planner brought in $11 million, to bring its total after two weekends to $28.2 million. Warner Bros.' fright film Valentine earned about $10.1 million, about what it cost to produce. Yet another poorly reviewed film, the Freddie Prinze Jr. comedy, Head Over Heels from Vivendi Universal, opened in seventh place with 5.0 million.
The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations: 1. The Wedding Planner, $11 million; 2. Valentine, $10.1 million; 3. Cast Away, $7.41 million; 4. Save the Last Dance, 7.4 million; 5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, $7.35 million; 6. Traffic, $6.3 million; 7. Head Over Heels, $5 million; 8. Finding Forrester, $4.4 million; 9. Denise Richards was an ugly child - and all her classmates called her "fish lips". Denise, who shot to fame in Starship Troopers and Wild Things before teaming up with Pierce Brosnan in The World Is Not Enough is now considered one of Hollywood's most beautiful actresses. But she stunned when she saw the girl playing a young version of her character in new movie Valentine (currently the #2 film in America) - because the girl was much prettier than Denise herself had been as a child. She says, "I was so flattered that they cast the young girl as they did to play me young because she was so adorable. I did not look like that when I was that age." She adds, "People used to call me `fish lips'. Hopefully, I will have my sweet revenge now that people are putting collagen in their lips. Every girl at my high school had big hair and feathered-out wings, " she says, and they jeered at her for being different. Denise says at one point, she wanted to become a veterinarian, because she got to like animals better than humans. Her best pal now is her Boston terrier puppy. »

Without the appeal of charismatic football superstars, Sunday's Super Bowl contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Giants could produce the lowest ratings for the game in ten years, Bloomberg News observed Wednesday, citing industry analysts. Nevertheless, CBS and its owned stations are likely to earn $200 million from advertisements running during the game, including $2.5 million spots for MGM's Hannibal, Sony Film's A Knight's Tale, Universal's The Mummy Returns, and Warner Bros.' Valentine. »

Hollywood hottie Denise Richards is terrified by germs - and packs a "sick bag" every time she leaves her home. The Valentine (2001) star is so petrified of throwing up and getting sick, she'll do anything to stay germ free. She says, "I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I like everything clean. It's flu season and so I'm carrying around stuff. I carry around hand sanitizer and wash with it after I've shaken hands. I know it's annoying and I'm sick and tired of using it." And Richards admits her obsession threatens not only her pin-up status, but also her jet-setting lifestyle. She explains, "There are so many germs on a plane. I asked my doctor what I could use and he gave me this antibacterial ointment which I put in my nose, and then I bring my own blanket because God only knows who's had an airplane blanket before me. I put it entirely over my head. I must look like a freak." The fussy sexbomb also admits she sprays remote controls and telephones everytime she enters a new hotel room. "And I've got a sick bag that my agent turned me on to because I don't want to get stuck in a foreign country where you can't read the labels on things - it has Immodium, Flumadine and Zithromax among other things." (IMDb editors' note: Most doctors caution against medically unsupervised use of antivirals and antibiotics like Flumadine and Zithromax. Please seek medical guidance before using any prescription medications. Thank you.) »
