I usually completely disregard anyone's criticism of a film before I see it, and I encourage EVERYONE to do the same., even with me. But before you stop reading, (because i kinda just told you too), let me point out some things that almost everyone here missed:
Number 1, valentine is a SLASHER film...this translates into...not the 6th sense of 2001, this translates into silliness in all forms. People don't go to this movie to be enlightened, they go to have fun. Its a really fun movie once you get over your initial pretentions...i suspect that this movie will find a following once on video by fans of such silliness as Tourist trap, friday the 13th or even prom night (p.s. this plot is remarkably similar to Terror Train, but handled better).
Number 2, unlike every single horror that has come out in the last five years this one refuses to constantly compare itself to a similar horror movie. Unlike scream, nobody says, hey this reminds me of terror train, or anything else, which is refeshingly different.
Number 3, a careful, true horror fan will notice the influence of directors other than craven or carpenter.....notably Dario Argento. Two scenes in particular: the maggot filled chocolates, and the glass door death scene. I was thrilled to see someone paying homage to a different director for once.
Number 4, and this sums it all up: If you don't expect much, you'll have fun, so go see this movie, you'll probably miss your chance after a few weeks to see this on the big screen surrounded by silly teenagers who jump at every scare. This is not a film for everyone, and horror hardly ever is (with the expection of Rosemary's Baby and The Sixth Sense, horror hardly ever crosses over into more than one genre). So if you want to have fun, and don't expect much, you'll like this film.
My only problem with this film: predictability (which this film suffers from horribly, it was obvious from the first couple of scenes to me), complete lack of T&A (come on this movie stars 3 blondes and denise richards and there was only one scene involving a wet bra.....pretty damn pathetic lack of t&a here). Thats it.
My rating: 8 out of 10........refreshingly fun.
