Melbourne-based private film finance group Elevate Production Finance has hired Shana Levine as head of production investment.
Levine joins other recent recruits in London-based film financier and producer Charles Auty, who is COO, and Brisbane-based entertainment and finance lawyer Ted Cawrey, who is head of legal and business affairs.
Epf MD Craig McMahon said Levine’s appointment would now mean the company could provide “superior end-to-end service to productions”.
Since launching in 2017, Elevate has helped fund a number of Australian and international films, including George Miller’s Three Thousand Years Of Longing; Rich Lee’s War Of The Worlds starring Eva Longoria; Liam-Neeson starrer Blacklight; Sophia Banks’ debut feature Black Site; and Film Nation’s Misanthrope, directed by Damián Szifron.
During the height of Covid-19, the company, which is backed by Australian and international institutions and private equity, reassessed its protocols to provide debt funding to productions despite the pandemic.

Adrien Brody sees dead people in Michael Petroni's (Till Human Voices Wake Us) derivative ghost story about a psychologist literally being haunted by the ghosts of his past. But while the Oscar-winning actor delivers a typically intense turn in this Australian thriller, the film doesn't manage to shed its overwhelming air of familiarity and obvious debt to such genre predecessors as The Sixth Sense, among countless others. Having recently received its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Backtrack seems mainly destined for a future on VOD and late-night cable. Michael Petroni is understandably chuffed by the B.O. results of The Book Thief, his adaptation of the Marcus Zusak novel- particularly in Australia. Yet he wonders how the WWII drama might have turned out if he hadn.t been asked to do multiple rewrites by the studio, Fox 2000, and the director, Downton Abbey.s Brian Percival. .My major disappointment with the rewrites was that they took out most of the magic realism that features in the book,. said Petroni, who is editing the Aussie psychological thriller Backtrack, the first film he.s directed since 2002.s Till Human Voices Wake Us. .Fox wanted a film that would appeal to families, not just adults, and Brian wanted to tell more of a straight, dramatic tale..

Adrien Brody, Sam Neill, Bruce Spence, Robin McLeavy and Anna Lise Phillips are shooting Backtrack, a psychological thriller from writer-director Michael Petroni. Jamie Hilton, who is producing with Petroni, his partner in See Pictures, and Antonia Barnard, says the project was relatively easy to finance. That was due primarily to how sales agents, distributors and other financiers responded to Petroni.s screenplay, the saga of psychologist Peter Bowers who discovers his patients are the ghosts of people who died in an accident 20 years earlier. Another advantage during the financing was that Petroni.s status as a writer was rising as The Book Thief, his adaptation of the Markus Zusak novel, started shooting in Germany. Screen Australia, UK-based sales agent Bankside and Oz distributor Madman Entertainment came on board before Brody, an Oscar winner for The Pianist and who starred in Midnight in Paris and The Brothers Bloom, was attached. The other participants are Screen Nsw,...

Some moves, especially the really big ones, like to give you so much advance notice that it feels like you’re seeing imagery and trailers for decades before they arrive. Other, smaller titles usually prefer to sneak into production then put out a release. Such is the case with Australian thriller Backtrack, which is now shooting, and stars Sam Neill and Adrien Brody.Writer-director Michael Petroni has crafted a film that finds a psychologist's life thrown into chaos when he learns that his patients are all ghosts from an accident that occurred 20 years previously. Serious shades of The Sixth Sense, then, from a film that also stars Bruce Spence, Robin McLeavy, Jenni Baird and Anna Lise Phillips. Though that reference is not a big spoiler: it’s merely the jumping off point for the plot. (If his patients are ghosts, who's been paying their bills?)Petroni, who directed 2002’s Till Human Voices Wake Us,...

Ronald Reagan's daughter Patti Davis has self-published her first book, a lesbian novel. The woman born Patricia Reagan released her new story "Till Human Voices Wake Us" on the Kindle bookstore.
This isn't Davis' first published work. She's written eight books in the past, including one about her father's battle with Alzheimer's called "The Long Goodbye." "Till Human Voices Wake Us" is getting plenty of press because it tells a lesbian love story, yet another way that Davis has set herself apart from Reagan's conservative views. Davis tells The New York Post that "none of it is autobiographical," though she has been a longtime advocate for gay rights.
The synopsis for "Till Human Voices Wake Us" reads, "In the empty days after her son's death, left alone in her grief by her husband, Isabelle Berendon falls in love with the unlikeliest person in the world: her sister-in-law." Davis wrote...

Screen Australia has found investment funding to back a new feature film: Backtrack.
It is the first major feature film or television project to receive funding from Screen Australia since last December, when the national screen agency revealed that it had committed its entire annual $42 milion budget within half a year.
While the funding for Backtrack surprised some in the industry, Screen Australia previously said the funding allocation was anticipated last December but only approved at the February 20 board meeting.
Backtrack is described as a spine-chilling supernatural thriller from writer/director Michael Petroni and producers Jamie Hilton (The Waiting City) and Antonia Barnard (Last Ride). The film follows a psychologist whose life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers his patients are all ghosts of people who died in an accident 20 years prior.
