It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding filmmaker Dan Walton’s planned feature directorial debut Bind, but today that’s all changed. Walton (who served as co-executive producer on 2008’s lurid Gutterballs) informed us that the film (which now features the tag-line "Hell Just Froze Over") is set to go before cameras in March of 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, and also provided us with a synopsis of the 80’s horror homage and an updated cast list.
According to Walton, who will direct from his own script, Bind tells the story of “a weekend getaway to a scenic winter wonderland that takes a deadly turn when a group of friends find themselves pitted against the elements and a dark presence with a bloody agenda.”
FX man Brian Sipe, whose previous credits include Van Helsing and Pirates of the Caribbean, will be on hand to provide what is expected

Top Ten High School Horror Movies: 1996 - Present

This past fall saw the debut of the supernatural horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, and with the film's Blu-ray and DVD release being only a few weeks away (December 29th), I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at some of the most successful high school horror films that have been released over the past 10 to 15 years.
Jennifer’s Body is a slick production, equipped with fresh young stars, a hip soundtrack, and, of course, strings of "clever" dialogue. And that’s the criteria I’ve chosen to adhere to when working on this top ten list. Some of the films included here aren’t necessarily my favorites, but they’ve been impactful and deserve the call-out all the same. At the risk of spoiling some of the choices, I chose 1996 as the eligibility year for the simple reason that it was the beginning of the glossy,

Richard Kelly’s The Box opens today in the UK, you can read my review here, and to celebrate the 70s paranoia vibe we’re posting this look back at some of the greatest conspiracy/paranoia thrillers of that decade. There are some great films here, and The Box does its best to emulate this, so you might want to look into some of these when you’re done with Kelly’s latest.
Klute 1971
Strongly following the crime / investigation genre, this film tells the story of a conspiracy theory that may be a little more personal, a little more close to home. Realistic and gritty (it centres on a prostitute); it promises the keep fans of 70’s films on their edge of their seat. ‘Don’t be afraid…’
When laboratory engineer Tom Gruneman (Robert Mili) disappears, the only clue available to detective John Klute (Donald Sutherland) is an obscene letter

Don't fret Dollhouse fans. You'll still get your Eliza Dushku fix on February 23. That's when Lionsgate Home Entertainment releases Open Graves .
Directed By Alvaro de Arminan, this supernatural thriller also stars Mike Vogel ( Cloverfield ).
In the vein of Final Destination , an international group of young surfers come into possession of an ancient artifact, Mamba, an old board game made from the skin and bones of a witch executed during the Spanish Inquisition. At a drunken party one night, they casually decide to play. It's all fun and games until they find out that curses last forever and death is the ultimate undertow.
Ooooh.
That's not the official cover art you see on the left, it's merely a sales sheet cooked up by Voltage Pictures. No special features have

If Hollywood made a film about an evil Rumpelstiltskin, why the hell not make one about the Pied Piper?
Zenescope Entertainment, who brought us comic books based on Final Destination and Se7e , are bringing their original title "The Piper" to the screen.
At their backs are Persistent Entertainment and Pantry Films to help them realize this. Persistent produced Southland Tales and the upcoming Nailed .
Here's how Zenoscope describes "The Piper": Present day Florida, a prestigious boarding academy where a musically gifted but misunderstood high school student named Sean stumbles upon a mysterious book that will give him the ability to finally get back at those who have wronged him the last few years. But when Sean realizes exactly what he has

So you've bitten the bullet and purchased a Blu-ray player, but now you're left with some of your favorite movies on DVD and can't really afford to buy new copies of all of them. Warner Home Video feels your pain and has set up a special website where you can upgrade up to 25 of your discs for $7.95 or $9.95 per exchange with free shipping on orders of more than $25.00.
Here are the details: Visit DVD2Blu.com and look through their list of 55 films (with more to be added in the coming months). You'll print out a pre-paid postage label, mail in your DVDs (without the cases), and then receive your Blu-rays (complete with the typical case, cover art, bonus materials, etc.) a few weeks later. Warner Home Video just announced a new program where you can upgrade several of your DVD titles to Blu-ray for as low as $7.95, and right now the price doesn't go any higher than $9.95. This is a similar program to the Red2Blu offer they made allowing customers to upgrade their HD DVD titles to Blu-ray, a program I actually took advantage of and loved it as a result.
The process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. Consumers who place orders over $25 will receive free shipping. For a complete list of titles visit DVD2Blu.com, but I have included the most recent list of titles and prices directly below.
10,000 B.C. ($9.95)
Rush Hour 3 ($9.95)
Full Metal Jacket ($9.95)

Warner Bros. has announced a DVD to Blu-ray upgrade program. While the list doesn’t include all their titles, it’s at least a start. According to WB, the process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. If you mail in one DVD, it’s $7.95 plus shipping. If you order more than $25, you’ll receive free shipping.
While some people haven’t been converted to Blu-ray, I’m all in. I think the picture quality is amazing on Blu-ray and I definitely see a difference between DVD and the HD format. All I can say is, if you have an 1080p TV, the format is absolutely worth the investment. For a complete list of what WB is willing to

Sin City producer Stephen L'Heureux's Solipsist Films has acquired the rights to Ed Laroche's graphic novel Almighty.
According to Mania, Black Hawk Down screenwriter Ken Nolan is attached to write the script and potential directors are being approached.
Created, written and drawn by Laroche, Almighty takes place in 2098 and follows a female motorcycling mercenary called Fale, who is hired to rescue a girl and bring her home across a third world America - "a fractured landscape of segregated zones driven by neo-tribalism."
Laroche said: "At its heart Almighty is a pursuit story. As the story unfolds there are other things that are attached to it but at the core of it, a girl has been kidnapped and someone has hired a killer to find her and bring her home." The official website for Almighty is here.
Mania adds that Solipsist has also picked up screen rights on two other titles.

Synopsis
On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon (Bobby Campo) has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him.

Michael Jackson's This Is It performed worse than expected last weekend, although you wouldn't know it to read the trades, many of which used way too many adjectives to describe a movie that did about as well as the latest Final Destination flick in its first stanza. Only that one had direct competition.
So the question for this weekend is, can A Christmas Carol, which also looks like it could fall well below the projections, actually reverse the trend? I don't think we'll see the same kind of business, where a movie estimated to make around $50 million in five days does 60% of that and is congratulated. More than likely, there will be plenty of family business in standard format theaters and IMAX to push this one to around $40 million. With about 3,500 theaters in all, that sounds about right to me, within 10% or so.
The week's other new releases should

Surprise! Another graphic novel (which is a fancy term Hollywood uses when they want to fool audiences into thinking the subject matter of their next movie was not based upon a comic book) is coming to the screen, but this time it's the small one!
According to The Hollywood Reporter Fox21 has partnered with Platinum Studios to develop a TV series based on Platinum's graphic novel "Gunplay." "Final Destination" writer-producer Glen Morgan is on board to adapt the novel, created and written by Jorge Vega. "Gunplay" centers on Abner Meeks, a buffalo soldier condemned to roam the Old West with a hellish curse slung at his waist: a demonic shooting iron that forces him to kill once a day or suffer soul-searing pain. "'Gunplay' is one of those rare combinations of fantastically created characters and wonderfully told narrative, which creates an inventive canvas from which to play," Platinum Studios chairman
