Music of the Heart: Vicario Pays Symphonic Homage to Erased History
Composer Margherita Vicario makes her directorial debut with Gloria!, a period piece recuperating a legion of women composers and musicians whose talents were fostered through various Italian orphanages also operating as musical institutions until they were indefinitely shuttered by an 1807 Napoleonic law. Vicario, who is a third generation of entertainers including actors, directors, and writers, imbues the film with her own original music, which also happens to be the film’s most impressive and memorable aspect. Her narrative is not so much based on a true story, but takes considerable liberties in paying tribute to countless women who were educated in these institutions, with most of their own cultural contributions now lost to time.…...

Wes Craven is gone but not forgotten. The soft-spoken horror auteur began his career as an English teacher at Westminster College in the 1960s. But in 1972, he burst onto the film scene with the low-budget shocker "The Last House on the Left." The film's disturbing subject matter alienated many viewers and critics, although some awarded the pic praise. Roger Ebert wrote: "Wes Craven's direction never lets us out from under almost unbearable dramatic tension." Craven found the overall experience negative and wanted to move away from horror movies. However, Craven's scripts outside the horror genre never garnered much interest, and so he returned to the world of horror with 1977's "The Hills Have Eyes." Now firmly established as a horror filmmaker, Craven would continue with the genre for the rest of his career. Craven died in 2015, but his legacy lives on. Below, we've ranked 8 of the filmmaker's best movies.

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Meryl Streep playing the iconic Miranda Priestly in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada.
However, producer Wendy Finerman recently said on the Hollywood Gold podcast that the Oscar-winning actress was nearly passed over for the role since someone working in the production thought “she has never been funny a day in her life.”
“And Meryl, people thought we were crazy, Finerman told host Daniela Taplin Lundberg. “I mean, I had people call me up and say, ‘Are you out of your mind? She’s never been funny a day in her life.'”
“She has been funny and they were wrong,” the producer added, to which Lundberg referenced Streep’s comical roles in films such as She-Devil and Death Becomes Her.

Is Meryl Streep the greatest film performer of all time? According to Oscar voters over the past five decades, that might just be the case with her record-shattering 21 nominations and three wins. But her filmography is filled with gems that didn’t get any awards buzz. Tour through our photo gallery of Streep’s 27 greatest performances ranked from worst to best.
Streep snagged her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for “The Deer Hunter” (1978) and picked up her first trophy in that category the very next year for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979). She subsequently snagged two prizes in the lead category (“Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 and “The Iron Lady” in 2011) and competed 17 more times: Best Actress for “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” (1981), “Silkwood” (1983), “Out of Africa” (1985), “Ironweed” (1987), “A Cry in the Dark” (1988), “Postcards from the Edge” (1990), “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995), “One True Thing” (1998), “Music of the Heart” (1999), “The Devil Wears Prada...

Succession features a stunning ensemble cast led by Brian Cox. The actor plays billionaire Logan Roy opposite Alan Ruck, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, and Sarah Snook. Much of the cast has received praise and accolades for their performances. And for Culkin, it marks the most lauded role of his career. Yet, even now, the actor refuses to speak with a notable pair of media outlets.

Four years after “Black Panther” became the first Oscar-winning film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” cast member Angela Bassett has made history as the first person to achieve academy recognition for an MCU performance. Included among the numerous actors with whom she reunites in the 2022 sequel is Lupita Nyong’o, who first played her role of Nakia four years after earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” If Bassett ends up prevailing in the same category this year, Nyong’o will be the 16th woman to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar she previously received.
Until this year, “12 Years a Slave” was the only acting Oscar-nominated film Nyong’o had appeared in. Two of her cast mates in the 2014 Best Picture winner – Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender – respectively competed for the male lead and supporting prizes but eventually...

The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

“There’s a lot of comments,” she says, from people at “the end of their rope, where the song gave them hope and made them stronger. There’s thousands and thousands,” she sighs. “One night I just stayed up almost all night, reading them and I was crying. Cuban-American singer will play the mother of the bride in Gaz Alazraki’s film
Cuban-American singer and actress Gloria Estefan has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and Plan B’s “Father of the Bride” remake alongside star Andy Garcia, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Gaz Alazraki is directing the film that also recently cast Adria Arjona as the bride-to-be. Estefan will play the mother of the bride and Garcia’s wife in the film.
The movie will revolve around a Cuban-American family, and screenwriter Matt Lopez is writing the script, drawing from his experience of years of attending Cuban weddings.
“Father of the Bride” was a remake of the 1950 original film that starred Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. The 1991 version of the film starred Steve Martin as George Banks, a doting father who is reluctant to let go of his daughter when he discovers she’s getting married.

Exclusive: Warner Bros and Plan B’s Cuban-American Father of the Bride looks to have landed one of the most famous Cuban-American entertainers of all. Sources tell Deadline that singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan is in negotiations to join Andy Garcia in the reboot, which Gaz Alazraki has been set to helm. The pic will revolve around a Cuban-American family, with Matt Lopez penning the script. Estefan would play Garcia’s wife, with Adria Arjona tapped to play the bride-to-be.
The film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film. While this will mark the third iteration of the story, sources say this will be more in the vein of the original Spencer Tracy pic and not the Steve Martin franchise from the 1990s.

While Glenn Close has taken up a lot of the conversation surrounding overdue Oscars in recent years, another perennial bridesmaid is hoping to finally win an Oscar of her own. Songwriter Diane Warren is once again nominated for Best Original Song, for “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” sharing writing credit with the song’s vocalist, Laura Pausini. Warren has now racked up a whopping 12 nominations but has yet to actually take home the little gold man, even while finding success at other awards shows like the Grammys and the Emmys. She won a Golden Globe last month for “Io Si,” which might just put her on the path to winning the Oscar once and for all.
Warren’s 11 previous Oscar losses were: “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from “Mannequin” (1987); “Because You Loved Me” from “Up Close and Personal” (1996); “How Do I Live” from “Con Air” (1997); “I Don...

At the 2021 Academy Awards on April 25, “Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao could make history with the most individual Oscar wins since Walt Disney. With nominations in Best Picture (Zhao is a producer of her film), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing, Zhao is already the most recognized female filmmaker in the history of the Academy Awards with four nominations. But if she manages a clean sweep of the categories, it would allow her to match Disney’s incredible 1954 performance, where he won a record four Oscars from a record six nominations.
But even if she’s able to match the legendary mogul, Disney will remain in the record books for his cumulative Oscars history. Ahead, a look at who has the most Academy Awards in history.

Prolific composer Diane Warren has written nine number one songs and had 32 tunes hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Charts. She has won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year. She’s also be named ASCAP’s Writer of the Year three times and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 2001. But one honor that has eluded her is the Academy Award. Though she hasn’t reach Susan Lucci territory (she finally won an Emmy for “All My Children” on her 19th nomination) Warren has been a bridesmaid at the Oscars 11 times.
But she may well win this year for her wistful ballad “Io Si (Seen)” from the Italian-language Netflix drama “The Life Ahead,” which begins streaming Nov. 13. Laura Pausini, who recorded the song, co-wrote the Italian lyrics with Niccolo Agliardi.

While Meryl Streep has been nominated a record number of times at the Oscars, she’s only won three times with bids #2, #4 and #17. That track record mean she has had to endure a staggering amount of losses at the Academy Awards. Surely, Streep was deserving of at least one other win from among these. After reviewing the roster of her thwarted bids for Oscar glory, be sure to vote in our poll as to which of these was the most egregious loss.
Streep lost her first Best Supporting Actress race for “The Deer Hunter” (1978) to Maggie Smith (“California Suite”; her third, for “Adaptation” (2002) to Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”); and her fourth (and most recent) for “Into the Woods” (2015) to Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”).

Will Diane Warren finally win an Oscar? She’s nominated for Best Original Song for “I’m Standing with You” from “Breakthrough” (watch the music video above). This is her 11th nomination, but she has yet to win. In fact, her latest nomination means she has contended for songwriting in five straight decades: the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Granted, her current nomination is for her work in 2019, but this nomination came in the 2020s, and it probably won’t be her last, so even if you don’t count this one, it’s only a matter of time. Check out the complete list of nominations here.

Diane Warren hopes that her song “I’m Standing With You” from “Breakthrough” will “speak to” the audience, and let them know that “somebody’s always standing with them.” The prolific songwriter spoke about her original tune from the 20th Century Fox release in a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Watch the exclusive video above.
See Diane Warren Interview: ‘Breakthrough’ songwriter
Directed by Roxann Dawson, it tells the true story of a 14-year-old boy (Marcel Ruiz) who was pronounced dead after drowning in a lake before his faithful mother (Crissy Metz) prayed him back to life. In addition to starring in the film, Metz also sings the uplifting melody, and admits to being a little nervous about pulling it off. Being a life-long fan of Warren’s, she wanted to “make this beautiful, big song authentic and real.”
For her part, Warren hoped to “capture” what it feels like “to know someone is on your side.

Songwriter extraordinaire Diane Warren just received her 10th Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, but she has never won, so it’s appropriate that her song is titled “I’ll Fight.” It’s featured in “Rbg,” which is also nominated for Best Documentary Feature for chronicling the life and career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Can Warren finally win? Her toughest threat is actually an artist she was previously nominated with: Lady Gaga. (Check out the complete list of nominees here.)
Warren and Gaga were nominated together for co-writing “Til it Happens to You” from the documentary “The Hunting Ground” (2015) about the epidemic of sexual assaults on college campuses. They were expected to win that award, but they were upset by British singer-songwriter Sam Smith for “Writing’s on the Wall” from the James Bond film “Spectre.”

Since it arrived last fall, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s hit duet from A Star Is Born, “Shallow,” has seemed the likely front-runner for Best Original Song at the Oscars. After winning the Golden Globe earlier this month, the song notched its Oscar nom this morning, but it’s up against some impressive competition, including first-time nominees Kendrick Lamar and Sza (Black Panther) and 10-time nominee Diane Warren (Rbg).

Practically every director, at some point, matures a little and decides to spread their wings a bit. Steven Spielberg diversified from blockbusters to Oscar-friendly prestige pictures. Every so often, Martin Scorsese takes a break from the crime fare that made his name to make a quiet period drama like “The Age Of Innocence,” “Kundun” or “Silence.” Wes Craven made “Music Of The Heart.

Over the past month, the Gold Derby series Meryl Streep at the Oscars has looked back at Meryl Streep’s 21 Oscar nominations, including her 2018 bid for “The Post.” We have considered the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
For a film buff and awards season aficionado, there is perhaps no more exhilarating a journey than going back to revisit all 21 Streep performances that brought her to the Oscars, plus her competition over the years – a grand total of 105 performances, most richly deserving of their recognition.
While Streep has three Academy Awards — for “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979), “Sophie’s Choice” (1982) and “The Iron Lady” (2011) — a case could surely be made that she has deserved even more. She is at her career-best in “The Bridges of Madison County” (1995) and, if not for the juggernaut that was Shirley MacLaine in “Terms of Endearment...

Over the past four decades Meryl Streep has amassed 21 Oscar nominations, more than any performer in Academy Awards history. She won three of those races, making her a member of the exclusive three-timers club of which there are only two other living members: Daniel Day-Lewis and Jack Nicholson. However, there’s a unique downside to Queen Meryl’s Oscar reign. After losing Best Actress for “The Post” Sunday night to Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”), Streep now has 18 Oscar failures on her hands, extending her record as the biggest acting loser of all time.

Songwriter Diane Warren is a musical chameleon who has written hits in genres from country to pop, to R&B, to rock. She has done much of her writing for film and just received her ninth Oscar nomination for Best Original Song: “Stand Up for Something” from “Marshall” (co-written with Common). But she’s never walked away with the trophy. What will it take for her to finally enter the winner’s circle? Everyone knows that Meryl Streep, a current Best Actress nominee for “The Post,” is the Secretariat of the Oscar nominations race. Her 21 combined lead and supporting actress bids put her nine lengths ahead of runners-up Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson and 11 ahead of legends Bette Davis and Sir Laurence Olivier.
But in a race within a race that has gotten less attention, Streep has an even greater lead: in nominations for roles based on real people. “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black [at the] Golden Globes in a silent protest. Your silence is the problem,” McGowan wrote. “You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”

Meryl Streep is firing back after Rose McGowan criticized her response to the Harvey Weinstein allegations.
On Saturday, McGowan, who claims Weinstein assaulted her in the past, called out the Oscar winner on Twitter, writing that Streep continued to work with the disgraced producer for years despite his bad reputation. The Scream actress also slammed a proposed plan to protest sexual misconduct in Hollywood by wearing black to the Golden Globes, sarcastically suggesting the women instead wear dresses by Marchesa, the fashion label founded by Weinstein’s estranged wife, Georgina Chapman. (McGowan has since apologized for suggesting the women wear Marchesa dresses,...

A sullen French-Algerian violinist tries to tame a rowdy Parisian class of immigrant and second-generation immigrant kids so he can teach them how to play the fiddle in La Melodie. For those who have seen Sergio Machado’s 2015 title The Violin Teacher, shot in the shantytowns of Sao Paulo, or, before that, Wes Craven’s East Harlem-set Music of the Heart with Meryl Streep, this will be an all too familiar tale — except that it’s now in French. Indeed, for much of the film’s running time, actor-turned-director Rachid Hami doesn’t seem interested in reinventing the wheel of the inspiring-music-teacher genre,...

The 2017 Oscar Nominees: Everything you need to know about the Best Actress race The 2017 Oscar Nominees: Everything you need to know about the Best Actress race Adriana Floridia2/10/2017 11:36:00 Am
This year's Best Actress race is extremely competitive.
Some of our favourite performances couldn't secure the nomination, and it was simply because there were so many incredible female performances. We're sad that names like Annette Bening for 20th Century Women, Amy Adams for Arrival and Hailee Steinfeld for The Edge of Seventeen weren't among the nominees, but we also love the five nominated performances so much. Seriously, it was just a great year for women acting in film, and with the talent out there today, it's always going to be hard, and therefore even more of an honour, to land that Oscar nomination.
Though there's five women in the running here, the race has been pretty much narrowed down to two major threats.
