Update: Variety has confirmed that Courteney Cox is in talks to join Neve Campbell in Scream 7. They didn’t mention Patrick Dempsey in their report.
The original article (published March 25th) follows:
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after. So now Scream 7 has been re-developed, and it...

Wes Craven, director of the first four films in the Scream franchise, passed away in 2015. So when Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media teamed up to revive the franchise with the new sequel that was released in 2022, the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett took the helm. They then returned to direct Scream VI the following year, with both of their contributions to the franchise centering on sisters Samantha and Tara Carpenter, played by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed that they had been planning to return to direct Scream 7 and complete a Carpenter sisters trilogy… but they mistakenly thought they could fit the production of their Universal Monsters movie Abigail (formerly known as Dracula’s Daughter) in between the making of Scream VI and Scream 7. Turns out, Spyglass wanted to get moving on Scream 7 sooner than their schedules allowed,...

After several delays, Scream 7 is moving forward with the return of star Neve Campbell and original writer Kevin Williamson at the helm.
It’s no secret that the next Scream film has been fraught with difficulties, from the firing of Melissa Bererra to Jenna Ortega leaving, followed by director Christopher Landon.
One of the biggest points of contention was the absence of Neve Campbell, who elected not to return for the sixth film due to a pay dispute.
However, whatever problems there were appear to have been resolved, as Campbell posted a lengthy statement on her Instagram account confirming that she is officially back for Scream 7.
Not only that, but Deadline reports that Kevin Williamson – who created the franchise and wrote the screenplays for Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4 – will direct. He has directed just one feature previously, the dark comedy Teaching Mrs Tingle, which was released...

It’s official! After sitting out Scream VI due to a controversial pay dispute, Neve Campbell will be reprising her role as Sidney Prescott in the next Scream movie. The news of Campbell’s return for Scream 7 was first broken by Campbell herself via Instagram. In the post, she wrote, “Hi All. I’m so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!! It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled!!!”

This weekend, Rob Savage (Host) brings his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman to theaters. But for those of us who were of horror-watching age eighteen years ago (that hurts to say out loud), there was 2005’s Boogeyman… a horror film that launched an entire trilogy.
That first movie was successful enough to spawn both Boogeyman 2 and Boogeyman 3, though both sequels went straight to video here in the States. So, in honor of the upcoming The Boogeyman, let us take a look back at the Boogeymen of old. Even if they are completely and utterly unrelated in every way possible… and we cannot stress that enough.
Boogeyman (2005)
Directed by Stephen Kay, Boogeyman came to us at an interesting time for the horror genre. “Torture porn” was in full swing with Wolf Creek, Saw and Hostel all releasing. PG-13 horror competition included The Grudge, The Skeleton Key and The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

It's difficult to overstate the immediate and overwhelming effect that Wes Craven's 1996 film "Scream" had on pop culture. By the mid-1990s the slasher genre had pretty much come to an end. The most popular monsters of the 1980s were being deliberately killed off, as "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" and "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday" seemingly closed the door on their respective franchises. The slasher series that continued started to die of fatigue, as seen in clunky, underwhelming films like "Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers" and "Hellraiser: Bloodline."
Then, in December of '96, "Scream" came out and a new trend was immediately born. The Kevin Williamson-scripted "Scream" was a slasher movie, yes, but it was populated by teenage characters who all knew -- and spoke openly about -- the tropes of slasher movies. Everyone was wry, sarcastic, and understood the metafictional situation they occupied.

Jughead wrote a short story for the University of Iowa, Mr. Honey tried to cancel all extracurricular activities, and the Riverdale parents campaigned to bring prom back on Riverdale Season 4 Episode 19.
Below, TV Fanatics Becca Newton, Meaghan Frey, and Jasmine Peterson debate Mr. Honey's secret soft side, the discovery of a new murderous tape, and their thoughts of Riverdale Season 4 as a whole.
Jughead created a short story about the group kidnapping and accidentally killing Mr. Honey. Did you like the story and how it progressed?
Becca: I liked it because it made the episode fun. This time the meta-humor landed for me.
Plus, it led to one of Riverdale’s better character moments—still rushed and underexplored, but it was very good by Riverdale standards.
Meaghan: I loved everything about watching Jughead develop the story. It was twisted, but isn't Riverdale always a little bit twisted?

Katie Holmes is returning to her horror roots. After spending recent (read: post-“Jack and Jill”) years working firmly in smaller-scale cinema, including supporting roles in films like “Logan Lucky” and “Woman in Gold” and directing and starring in her feature filmmaking debut “All We Had,” Holmes has signed on for a new high-profile gig. The actress and filmmaker will star in Stx Entertainment and Lakeshore Entertainment’s just-announced sequel, “The Boy 2,” which follows their 2016 horror hit “The Boy.”

Per the film’s official logline, the film follows a “young family” who, “unaware of the terrifying history of Heelshire Mansion … moves into the estate, where their young son soon makes an unsettling new friend, an eerily life-like doll he calls Brahms.” Holmes will lead the cast in the role of “Liza,” most likely the matriarch of a seemingly doomed family.

Marisa Coughlan Comes Forward With Harvey Weinstein Story: "He Wanted to Barter Sex for Movie Roles"
The Peninsula Hotel. A powerful movie mogul. An actress whose star was on the rise. A penthouse meeting about movie projects and a promise for starring roles in upcoming feature films. Then an inappropriate request: Move the discussion from an open area to a private bedroom where they could exchange massages, maybe more, because that's what his "special friends" typically do.
Marisa Coughlan said no.
It was 1999 and the 25-year-old Minnesota native was fresh from filming the Kevin Williamson-directed dark teen comedy Teaching Mrs. Tingle opposite Helen Mirren, Katie Holmes and Barry Watson. She'd already been cast to reteam with...

Touched with Fire asks whether love between two thirty-something adults with bipolar disorder can be successful, loosely wondering about the intersection of sensuality, realism, and mental illness. It seems interested to extract a rubric explaining the connection between people with mental illness who are creatives. The film meanders through this exploration rather than makes up its mind as a creative drama or a serious character study where we could feel immediate pathos for the couple’s suffering and willfully involve ourselves in their situation (which could be an educational, engrossing filmic experience if well-presented). Contemporary films about mental illness such as Girl, Interrupted and A Beautiful Mind achieve this by stripping away characters’ “faces,” showing them as raw and realistic from the beginning. Disappointingly, this doesn’t happen in Touched with Fire. It takes time before New York City poets Carla (Katie Holmes) and Marco (Luke Kirby) approach identities more recognizably meaningful,...

When I was a kid, I was taught that horror movies were things to be avoided; Violent, sadistic, even satanic items made by sick people. Which of course only made them more intriguing. On our trips to Blockbuster I would sneak down to the horror movie isles, this forbidden place, and look at the ghastly images of monsters and mangled bodies on the covers, only imagining the horror they contained.
In 1984, Wes Craven made A Nightmare on Elm Street and gave a physical face to our childhood boogeymen. I was far too young to see the movie, but that didn’t matter. Freddy Krueger had stepped out of the film and become part of the cultural zeitgeist, sending a young boy’s imagination spinning in the middle of the night about all the ways he could come and get you.

In the post-Lady in the Water era, it’s tough to remember how bonkers people once went for The Sixth Sense. But a mere millennium ago, M. Night Shyamalan’s atmospheric thriller was the toast of audiences and critics alike — a box office smash, a cultural touchstone, a freakin’ Best Picture nominee. Not only at the MTV Movie Awards, but also at the Oscars!
How did a simple, potentially gimmicky ghost story capture our hearts and minds so fully? Easy: because despite the shadow hindsight casts upon it, The Sixth Sense is a great movie. Its brief 107-minute run...

Helen Mirren is largely thought of as a distinguished, multiple-award-winning actress (she picked up an Oscar for "The Queen") -- a woman of rarified dignity, beauty, and poise. But in "Red 2," opening this week, you get to see a whole different side of Mirren, as she reprises her role as Victoria, a ruthless British assassin who is tasked by the English government to bring down the killer cads played by Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, and others.
The movie, directed by "Galaxy Quest" helmer Dean Parisot, is a riot, largely thanks to Mirren's knowing, winky portrayal of Victoria. It's a side the actress dosen't express enough, but is appreciated all the same.
We got to talk to Mirren about what it was like returning to the "Red" universe, her role in another big-budget franchise movie this summer ("Monsters University"), and getting recognized at the Gap for a movie most people forgot about.

After having previously tackled the cinematic output of Wes Craven three times in the past year over on my personal blog (not including my formal Scream 4 review for this very site), I figured that I was all but done talking about my favourite horror movie director of all time. I was content that I had said all that needed to be said about his career, his hits, his misses, and his most iconic films.
Then I was approached with the idea of revisiting the Scream films in time for Halloween. Just like Craven was hesitant to take on the first Scream film because he was burnt out on horror, I had to think twice about whether I wanted to delve back into a topic I had already spent far too much time on.
After watching all four Scream films again on Blu-ray, I find it a bit strange that...

I'm afraid of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, but for silly reasons. It has something to do with the title, which sounds like either an eerie whisper at Neverland Ranch or a creepy Paul Anka hit, and the track record of Ms. Katie Holmes, who first tried to terrify us in 1999's hyper-dorky Teaching Mrs. Tingle. You'd think Scream maestro Kevin Williamson would want to explore a darker teen fantasy than "getting back at a mean teacher," but no -- this movie is the horror equivalent of the Nickelodeon Takes Over Your School sweepstakes. Your history instructor is getting slimed! With her own blood! Sweet!

Cameron Diaz may play the title role in "Bad Teacher," but many, many terrible teachers have come before her to the big screen. The film, which opens this week, joins a proud tradition of movies featuring educators with questionable intentions.
In fact, Diaz looks like a candidate for a Golden Apple award for teaching excellence when compared with some of the classroom authority figures envisioned by John Hughes and Ingmar Bergman. Any child would be lucky to have her in charge if their alternative involved a psycho from Park Chan-wook's "Lady Vengeance" or Arnold Schwarzenegger as an undercover cop.
While Diaz may be worthy of the label "Bad Teacher," these ten characters deserve to be recognized as "The Worst Teachers in Movie History."

The big topic of conversation around the AfterElton employee break room this week — other than snicks stinking up the microwave with his damn tuna melts — was: "What is your favorite guilty pleasure movie?"
Some of the responses we heard were surprising, giving a disturbing glimpse into the twisted dark souls of some of our writers. Meanwhile, some responses (like, you know, mine) just stand as excellent movie recommendations. We thought we'd round up all the various answers in this new feature we're trying out called "AfterElton Trending Topics."
But we don't want to just hear from the Ae writers. As you might have noticed, most of them are blowhards. In the comments, we'd love to hear from our readers too. What is the biggest guilty pleasure in your DVD collection?
