Filmmaker Tim Burton is known for his gothic aesthetics and choosing to tell stories of weird characters. The filmmaker has put his stamp on blockbusters such as Batman as well as more personal stories such as Big Fish. He will be returning to one of his most beloved franchises with the Michael Keaton starrer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
One movie in his filmography that stands out from the rest is his 2001 revival of Planet of the Apes. The project served as a remake of the 1968 classic sci-fi film, and starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and more. The film was not received well upon release and is often considered to be a subpar remake of the original. Actor Paul Giamatti, who played Limbo, spoke about his experience while shooting the film.

CBS sitcom "The Bob Newhart Show" was a staple for American TV audiences of the '70s, thanks in large part to clever writing and Newhart's much-loved performance as psychologist and comedic straight man Bob Hartley. The show ran for six seasons from 1972 to 1978, but it had a surprisingly long pop cultural afterlife. Characters from "The Bob Newhart Show" have popped up in everything from "Murphy Brown" to "St. Elsewhere" to "Alf," though their most famous reappearance came in the jokey "Newhart" finale in 1990. In it, Newhart wakes up in bed next to his wife from the previous series and discovers that this entire sitcom was all an elaborate dream. "The Bob Newhart Show," it turned out, was his real world.
When it wasn't being resurrected for increasingly meta crossovers, "The Bob Newhart Show" was a pretty straightforward sitcom about the life of a mental health clinician and the assortment...

“Hey guys, so I broke my foot today at the show,” Cudi wrote on X. “Just leavin the hospital. Never broken a bone before so this is all a bit crazy.

Alan Ritchson is the man of the moment. Success and the spotlight have not come to him overnight. Despite his professional and personal struggles, he never gave up on his dream of becoming a star one day. He might be one of the most in-demand action heroes now but his resilience as an actor is truly commendable.
As a young boy, Ritchson used to perform in school musicals and improv around the cafeteria. His inspiration behind this was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Minds star Jim Carrey. He got the chance to meet his idol once, but things turned out to be a little awry.

Exclusive: Comedian Tom Segura has identified the most promising vehicle yet to showcase his acting chops, as Deadline understands that he’s in talks for multiple roles in Dirty Rotten Bastard, a show biz-centric indie from Ed Helms & Mike Falbo’s Pacific Electric Picture Company.
Helmed by Ryan McNeely and Josh Martin, aka The Director Brothers, the film tells the insane true story of an aspiring filmmaker who is kidnapped by deranged lounge singer Tony Clifton. Initially drawn to document Clifton’s world, he is thrust into a chaotic journey of sex, celebrity, and comedy, blurring the lines between observer and participant, and testing his sanity.
Segura will play legendary avant-garde comedian Andy Kaufman’s larger-than-life comedic persona Clifton, as well as the performer’s friend and longtime collaborator Bob Zmuda.
Zmuda was known to switch off with Kaufman in portraying Clifton, a foul-mouthed lounge singer out of Las Vegas,...

An awards season unlike any other — during which the first simultaneous strikes of actors and writers in Hollywood history largely prevented campaigning by talent for months — came to an end Sunday night at the 96th Academy Awards.
As was widely expected, Oppenheimer dominated, winning seven Oscars — no film has won more since Slumdog Millionaire snagged eight, 15 years ago — including for best picture (Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven), director (Nolan), actor (Cillian Murphy, the category’s first Irish winner), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), film editing (Jennifer Lame) and original score (Lugwig Göransson).
That’s quite an achievement for not just the filmmakers, who adapted a book (Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer) that many thought was unadaptable into a riveting instant classic of a film, but also for the teams that sold it...

The Wisconsin native also appeared alongside Rod Steiger in Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker (1964), played the mobster Salvanti in Roger Corman’s The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) and was a murderous Santa Claus in the cult horror movie Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984).
After portraying an uncredited pool-hall hood in the Paul Newman-starring The Hustler (1961), Dierkop got to work with Newman again in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) when he was hired to play Hole in the Wall Gang outlaw George “Flat Nose” Curry.

We haven’t seen the last of Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey will reprise his role as the mad scientist with the formidable facial hair in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” The news comes despite the fact that (and here there be spoilers) the second film in the series ended with Dr. Robotnik falling from a giant robot to the ground below, a potentially fatal tumble. In the film’s post-credits scene, however, it is revealed that Dr. Robotnik’s body has not been found, setting the stage for Sonic’s main antagonist to make a dramatic return.
The combined global box office for “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” stands at $725.2 million, hence the enthusiasm of Paramount, the studio behind the video game adaptations, for another installment in the franchise. Exclusive: A3 Artists Agency has signed Mary Lynn Rajskub, the veteran comedian, actress and writer known for turns in Fox’s hit action drama 24, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love and FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, for representation.
In 24, which ran for nine seasons, Rajskub played the fan-favorite character of Chloe O’Brian, the intelligence analyst who is protagonist Jack Bauer’s (Kiefer Sutherland) most trusted colleague. After sitting down with dour conspiracy theorist Michael Ruppert for 2009’s Collapse, the American Movie director didn’t make a feature for eight years. It took a savvy comedy fan to know what Andy Kaufman was doing with his career. More than a mere funnyman, Kaufman tended to satirize the trappings of standup comedy, often using his routines to play pranks on the audience. As detailed in Miloš Forman's 1999 biopic "Man on the Moon," Kaufman wanted to host a TV special that contained artificial signal "static" in the hope that viewers would get up out of their seats and whack their "broken" TV sets. That's not funny for the audience, but it's certainly funny for Kaufman.
Part of Kaufman's satirical act was a whole separate stage persona named Tony Clifton, a foul-mouthed, alcoholic lounge singer who cussed and behaved badly. Clifton was also occasionally played by Kaufman's close friend and associate Bob Zmuda, allowing Clifton and Kaufman to occasionally appear in the same room, calling the reality of the character into question. After receiving harsh criticism for his remarks about transgender and LGBTQ+ communities in his previous Netflix special The Closer, Dave Chappelle again took a jab at trans people and targeted the disabled community in his latest special The Dreamer.
Chappelle focused on the trans community in his opening. He recalled meeting Jim Carrey on the set of the 1999 movie Man on the Moon, in which Carrey portrayed the late comedian Andy Kaufman.
“I was very disappointed because I wanted to meet Jim Carrey and I had to pretend he was Andy Kaufman all afternoon. It was clearly Jim Carrey. I could look at him and clearly see it was Jim Carrey,” Chappelle said, describing how Carrey stayed in character while off-camera. “I say all that to say … that’s how trans people make me feel.”
He then moved on to the disabled community. “Tonight, I’m doing all handicapped jokes.

Maybe it’s time for Dave Chappelle to try some new material.
The comedian’s newest special, “The Dreamer,” debuted on Netflix on Dec. 31, and largely focuses on his early years in entertainment and how he manifested his success. But he floods the first 12 minutes of the set revisiting his favorite target in recent years: Transgender people.
Chappelle opens the special by telling a story about visiting Jim Carrey while he was shooting the 1999 film “Man on the Moon,” where the actor famously went method on set while portraying comedian Andy Kaufman. Dave recalls being “very disappointed” that he spent the day speaking to Carrey pretending to be Kaufman, ending by saying, “That’s how trans people make me feel.”
He then addressed the controversy surrounding his anti-trans material, saying, “If you guys came here to this show tonight thinking that I’m going to make fun of those people again,...

Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer, the comic’s seventh stand-up special for Netflix, opens with a quote about the nature of success by Henry David Thoreau before capturing the comic in stark black-and-white, moving through the crowd in slow-mo (cigarette in hand, naturally) to Radiohead’s “Daydreaming,” like a championship boxer before a fight. Emmy-and-Golden Globe winning actor. Oscar-nominated producer. Director. Writer. In his 50 years in the industry, Danny DeVito has worn many hats, becoming one of the most successful and popular entertainers of his generation.
Daniel Michael DeVito, Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in New Jersey, with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Also known as Fairbank’s disease, this rare genetic disorder affects bone growth and contributed to his short stature. Dumb and Dumber is probably Jim Carrey’s funniest film. While The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind might be better all-around movies, in terms of his comedies, nothing quite beats Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s debut. While Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask arguably made more of an impact on pop culture, both of those films are dated in ways that this isn’t. Jim Carrey is sensational as Lloyd Christmas, a love-struck limo driver pursuing the object of his affections, Lauren Holly’s Mary Swanson, to Aspen.
As hilarious as he is, he’s matched by Jeff Daniels, who plays his best pal, Harry, who accompanies him on his trip in their iconic Mutt Cutts van. The road comedy is scored with a classic alt-rock nineties soundtrack, and some of the rude jokes, which include love-lorn truck drivers, headless parakeets...

There were few bands on the planet bigger than R.E.M. in the mid-Nineties. Their popularity grew every year in the Eighties before they went supernova the following decade thanks to hits like “Losing My Religion,” “Man on the Moon,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” Warner Bros. was so desperate to keep them on the label in 1996 that it gave them $80 million for their next five albums, breaking all industry records up to that point.

Paul Giamatti turned in one of the best performances of 2004 in Alexander Payne‘s “Sideways.” He played Miles, a depressed writer who takes a trip to Santa Barbara County to celebrate his friend’s (Thomas Haden Church) engagement. He reap bids at the Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes awards. It was shock when he was snubbed at the Oscars in favor of eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) plus Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), and Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”).
The academy can finally rectify that oversight as Giamatti and Payne have reunited for “The Holdovers,” which Focus Features is releasing on Oct. 27. Giamatti is a curmudgeon of a teacher forced to stay behind and look after students staying at his school throughout the holiday period. Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are great in supporting roles but it’s Giamatti who is the star of the picture.

R.E.M. are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 11th studio album Up with a new remastered reissue, set for release on November 10th via Craft Recordings. It features a collection of bonus material including, but not limited to, an 11-song performance recorded at…the Party of Five set.
Party of Five was a pretty depressing late-1990s drama series that starred a Scream-era Neve Campbell, a pre-Lost Matthew Fox, and teen-superstar-in-the-making Jennifer Love Hewitt. It also gave R.E.M. their first appearance on a scripted TV show, which they filmed in 1999 at Los Angeles’ Palace Theatre in front of 175 fan club members. Their single at the time, the Up track “At My Most Beautiful,” was the one that made it into the Party of Five episode — but the members figured they’d use the studio to rehearse for their tour while they were at it.

When Andy Kaufman passed away in May 1984, it was the final full stop in a life that seemed to be endlessly self-regenerating. Or was it? Rumors that this was another of his bizarre stunts were rife at the time, so much so that one of the mourners at the comedian’s funeral poked the body that lay in the casket to see if it would move.
Premiering this week in Venice Classics, Alex Braverman’s feature-length documentary Thank You Very Much is an attempt to locate the man behind the myth, and though there’s plenty of firsthand testimony and a treasure trove of archive material, it soon becomes achingly clear that the real Andy Kaufman likely never will be unmasked.
It seems fitting, then, that Kaufman seemed to appear fully formed from nowhere when comedy impresario Budd Friedman, owner of The Improv, booked his first slots in the early ’70s.

In Hollywood it only takes one role to turn you into an icon, and one moment to take it all away. As many TV stars have found out, life after a hugely successful show can be quite tough for some. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus winning countless Emmy’s, Jason Alexander returning to his stage roots and Jerry Seinfeld continuing his legendary stand up career, its time we find out what happened to the other member of Seinfeld’s iconic cast: Wtf Happened to Michael Richards? As the schedules begin to drop for this summer’s music festivals, Rolling Loud recently announced its headliners. One of the nation’s biggest hip-hop fests, the three-day extravaganza draws big-name rappers. This year, the event will feature headliners Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, and Playboi Carti and special guests Kodak Black, 21 Savage, and Lil Uzi Vert, among dozens of other artists. But when Kid Cudi performed last year, he cut his set short after concertgoers kept throwing objects at him. So it’s no surprise his name doesn’t appear in this year’s lineup.

Andy Kaufman, the legendary comedian, prankster and “inter-gender champion”, will be honored as an inductee into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the celebrity wing.
Andy Kaufman may not exactly scream wrestling, but the WWE has defended its decision (certainly not the most controversial this year), noting his history in the world of sports entertainment, particularly his rivalry with Jerry “The King” Lawler. In their official statement, the WWE said, “The rivalry between Lawler and Kaufman became national news leading to a legendary exchange on Late Night with David Letterman. The interaction would later be memorialized in the 1999 movie biopic Man on the Moon, where Lawler appeared alongside Jim Carrey as Kaufman to recreate the iconic moment. Kaufman’s interactions with Lawler transformed the business and opened up pathways for future cross-over Superstars such as Johnny Knoxville who honored the comedian with his WrestleMania 38 ring gear.” Lawler, who...

Andy Kaufman is set to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2023, Variety has learned.
Kaufman will be inducted alongside this year’s fellow honorees that currently include Rey Mysterio and The Great Muta.
Kaufman is best known for his career on the stage and screen, most famously starring as Latka Gravas in the hit sitcom “Taxi” from 1978-1983. He made his mark on the world of professional wrestling, however, when he declared himself the Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World, offering money to any woman who could pin him as part of his act. On a recent episode of the "Fly on the Wall" podcast, comedian Chris Rock talked about watching the Safdie brothers' film "Uncut Gems" and being incredibly impressed by Adam Sandler's performance. Rock was also made incredibly melancholy, however, as he immediately began to think of the later actor/comedian Chris Farley. Rock felt that, had Farley survived, he would have eventually had the opportunity to reveal his own dramatic acting chops, something Farley was never able to display in his film career prior. Rock and Farley both began performing on "Saturday Night Live" in 1990, and they both rose to fame rapidly. Farley, however, wrestled with addiction and health problems for many years, and died of an overdose in 1997. He was 33.
Farley's death hit the world of comedy hard, and many of his friends and co-workers have come out over the years to say what a kind, shy, decent guy Farley was.

Jerry “The King” Lawler has a career that spans more than 50 years, and it’s chronicled in this Sunday’s (March 19) episode of Biography: WWE Legends. The show tracks the Hall of Famer’s career from the 1970s when he was a popular staple in Memphis wrestling where he’d regularly sell out the Mid-South Coliseum. His gift of the gab showed early on through a gig as a disc jockey at a local radio station. A&e Lawler really made headlines for his heated rivalry with Andy Kaufman. The Taxi star loved the performance side of the pro wrestling business and couldn’t help but get involved. He often challenged women, demeaning them and taunting crowds, which led to Lawler stepping into the picture. Their feud gained national attention after Lawler slapped the comedic actor on a memorable episode of The Late Show with David Letterman. The scene played out...

Jim Carrey once called himself the “Tom Hanks of the Golden Globes” after his second straight victory with the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2000 (for “Man on the Moon” following “The Truman Show”). He could win with that group but somehow couldn’t impress Oscar voters. And he’s not the only actor in that situation. Our photo gallery features Carrey among the 20 actors who’ve never been nominated for an Oscar.
Even Academy Awards hosts such as Billy Crystal and Steve Martin haven’t been noticed by Oscar voters other than seeing them perform on the ceremony stage. Come on Academy, put Adam Sandler in the game!
The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations announced on Wednesday yielded 25 first-time nominees across film and television. Among them was Sandler, who, in Jeremiah Zagar’s “Hustle,” has a dramatic turn as a basketball scout who discovers a street ball player in Spain. With AMPAS voting opening tomorrow, he’s peaking at the perfect time to garner his first Oscar nod for best actor.
Outside of his Independent Spirit Award win for “Uncut Gems” in 2020, the SAG nod was Sandler’s first major acting recognition of his 35-year career. Released by Netflix in early June, “Hustle” would have been discarded if it was with any other studio for awards prospects. But the streaming giant has made Sandler, and the movie, one of its top priorities along with a slate that includes more industry-friendly titles including war drama “All Quiet on the Western Front,...

Harry Melling has achieved something quite rare. At 10 years old, he stomped and screamed his way into what would become one of the biggest film franchises of all time, as the present-counting, cake-inhaling Muggle cousin of Daniel Radcliffe’s young wizard in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. But the actor has managed to wriggle free of that association, for the most part, and has whittled out a career playing some of the most fascinating, peculiar characters on screen. There was his haunting performance as a limbless artist in the Coen brothers’ anthology film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Then his role as a preacher who pours venomous spiders over his head in horror noir The Devil All the Time. Now, he’s playing the skittish, misunderstood young Edgar Allan Poe in gothic detective mystery The Pale Blue Eye.

Those living in Los Angeles in 1990 may remember hearing Courtney Love's voice blasting from radios tuned to Kroq as she belted aggressive punk-ish lyrics as the frontwoman of her band Hole. Legendary local DJ Rodney Bingenheimer was reportedly hounded by a young Love at the restaurant where he had breakfast, and she eventually convinced him to air Hole's debut single, a song with a decidedly inappropriate title. Hole's first record "Pretty on the Inside" was released in 1991, and Love became a celebrity in the growing grunge scene. In 1992, Love married superstar Kurt Cobain, frontman of Nirvana, and the couple instantly became icons of anti-commercial 1990s disaffected youth. Their celebrity, however, paired with unfair public images and a tragic addiction to heroin, affected the couple's mental health, and Cobain died by suicide in 1994.
Love continued to work, however. Hole's 1995 record "Live Through This" was widely acclaimed, and the rocker moved...

It’s almost weird that there aren’t more documentaries about Robert Downey Jr. There’s a very good case for the Iron Man actor being the biggest movie star on the planet for the past decade. For all the opinion pieces you see about the “death of the A-lister”, Downey Jr is just about as big-time as it gets: a performer whose seemingly effortless onscreen charm made him a star twice over. By 2018, he was reportedly making as much as 75m (£61m) for a single Marvel movie. But dive into his past, and it’s not so rosy: pain; addiction; a career on the brink of total annihilation. So when filmmaker Chris Smith approached him about making him the focus of a new documentary, it surely seemed like a slam dunk. “Word came back, around two weeks later – ‘Absolutely not’. No interest,” Smith recalls. “But he thought somebody should film his dad.

Few are as committed to their performances as Jim Carrey. The multi-faceted actor and comedian has proven he's more than the wacky, animated jokester of his early TV and movie career with roles in dramas like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and biopics like "Man On The Moon." In fact, for the latter he remained in-character throughout filming which, as the behind-the-scenes documentary "Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond" showed, was a little too much commitment for some of the production team. He even arranged for Andy Kaufman and Bob Zmuda's abrasive lounge singer character Tony Clifton to show up at a press conference to start a fight.
Of course, among Jim Carrey Movies, "Man On The Moon," isn't the first thing you think of. That honor usually goes to his '90s comedies, and rightfully so. Movies such as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "The Mask" are...

Budd Friedman, the founder of The Improv comedy club, has died. Deadline confirmed his death with The Hollywood Improv. He was 90.
Friedman recently had a celebration for his 90th birthday at the Hollywood Improv. We hear there will be tributes to him tonight on-stage at the venue.
In a statement to Deadline, the Improv said, “The comedy world lost a giant today. He was not a stand-up comedian or sit-com star or movie legend. But he gave birth to a generation of artists who defined American comedy and culture for decades.”
Friedman opened up the Improv in New York City in 1963 shortly after quitting his job as an advertising executive with the goal to become a theatrical producer. The coffee house attracted the likes of Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Albert Finney, Christopher Plummer and Jason Robard. Dustin Hoffman and Bette Midler, who were not widely known also performed at the club at the time.

They have both received critics awards and Golden Globe nominations in their long careers. Martin has at least received an honorary Oscar, as has Donald Sutherland, but alas no individual nomination for either one throughout their careers.
