Mark Felt may be the most consequential unknown American of the last half century. In the shadows until shortly before he died in 2008, Felt was known to the world only as “Deep Throat,” the source whose information led to the downfall of Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal. Now we get a three dimensional glimpse of the man and his motives in “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House,” starring a steely and principled Liam Neeson in the title role. Obscured in this telling are Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, the two twenty-something Washington Post reporters to.

This week, Jay-z dropped his latest studio album 4:44, and there's so much to discuss. While the rapper brings up plenty of different people in the new tracks, it's the more personal moments that really shine. One song is dedicated to his infidelity. He talks about Beyoncé's miscarriage and apologizes for cheating on her. He even mentions his kids! Another song turns into something you'd never expect: a coming out for his mom, Gloria Carter. Called "Smile," the song is a powerful duet between mother and son. Jay-z raps "Mama had four kids, but she's a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she's a thespian / Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take." Even more moving, though, is the poem Gloria Carter reads at the end: "Living in the shadow / Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live?...

Jay-z's latest album, 4:44, dropped at midnight on Friday, and while fans haven't been able to stop raving over songs like "Kill Jay-z" and "4:44," which seemingly reference wife Beyoncé's Lemonade and themes of infidelity, there's a particularly significant song about a whole other area of the rapper's life -- his relationship with his mother, Gloria Carter.
Carter came out as lesbian in "Smile," the third track off her son's 13th album. It's the first time either of the two has publicly addressed her sexual identity.

With Bright Nights he’s back in great form, once again showcasing his flair for precise, intimately scaled dramas. Like his compatriot Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann, a quick synopsis of Arslan’s film makes it sound like standard feel-good Hollywood fare: after his estranged father dies, the protagonist Michael decides to try and reconnect with his own teenage son Luis, whom he barely knows, and takes him on a road trip, embarking on a journey towards […]...

Gotham is a busy place these days.
Jim is still chasing after Indian Hill escapees. His latest was Jervis Tetch's sister Alice, the girl with the poisonous touch.
We don't think the Mad Hatter is going to sit by silently while his sister sits at the Gcpd, and based on these pictures it looks like he's recruiting some friends to help him out.
Could it be Tweedledee and Tweedledum? What kind of havoc will they wreak on Gotham and the Gcpd? It's certainly not going to be good if Jervis' stopwatch is involved!
It also looks like Nygma has dived right into his new role after being released from Arkham on Gotham Season 3 Episode 3. We're guessing he's Oswald's new campaign manager, and we can't wait to see how these two interact to get him elected.
Take a look at the photos from Gotham Season 3 Episode 4, "New Day Rising" and speculate away!

Co-writer, director and star Taika Waititi reveals the new title for his What We Do In The Shadows comedy sequel: it's We're Wolves...
"We're werewolves, not swearwolves" was one of the lines we kept reciting to ourselves for weeks after seeing Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's wonderful 2014 vampire comedy, What We Do In The Shadows. A mockumentary about a bunch of bloodsuckers who happen to share a shabby house in Wellington, New Zealand, it provided a fly-on-the-wall view of an average undead ghoul's humdrum existence. The filmmaking duo got some laugh-out-loud moments from something as simple as a scene where vampires argue about who's doing the washing-up.
The very definition of a cult gem, Shadows' following is such that a spin-off is on the way, originally titled What We Do In The Moonlight. But in a new interview with Crave Online (which reaches us via Coming...

Philippe Garrel, known for making films about deeply self-reflexive romantic entanglements since the late 60s, is at it again with In the Shadows of Women. Infidelity, art, improvisation, one-take scenes, shot in monochrome on film and natural settings have been Garrel's Mo and although his new film certainly encompasses all those elements, it seems much more concise and less ambiguous and melancholic than his other films, thanks to its script. What's different here is his emphasis on looking at love and romance from a female perspective. Famed screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (Discreet Charm of Bourgeoisie, Tin Drum, Every Man for Himself, Birth) joined in with Garrel's regular writing partners -- Caroline Deruas and Arlette Langman -- to write a script that represents the female point of view,...

Across nearly four decades and two publishing companies, the Star Wars comic book universe has seen thousands of issues chronicling tales set in a galaxy, far, far away. Following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, fellow subsidiary company Marvel reclaimed the license to publish new Star Wars comics in 2015. Along with it, they received publishing rights to all prior Star Wars comics, including those released by Dark Horse when it held the license (from the early 90s up to 2015). Now, thanks to Marvel’s digital subscription service, Marvel Unlimited, the vast majority (though not yet all) of these comics are available for subscribers of the service to read in one convenient place.
But with all those comics to choose from, and all rendered equally non-canonical by Lucasfilm, where is a Star Wars comic book novice to start? Right here, with this list of ten single issues, storylines and series from across...

The Asian World Film Festival (Awff) has added 11 films to their Special Screenings and non-competitive lineup, with "Piku" (India) as the Festival’s “Centerpiece Screening”, presented by Pelican Executive Suites. Running from October 26 - November 2, 2015 in Culver City and Westwood, California, the Festival features select foreign language films from the 50 eligible countries in the Asian World region, including films that have been officially submitted as their country’s Oscar® and Golden Globe considerations. South Korea’s "The Shameless" will officially open the Festival with Taiwan’s official Oscar® submission, "The Assassin," by master filmmaker as the official closing night film on November 2nd.
The 11 films include [in alphabetical order by country]: "Let Pan" (Myanmar), "Road to the Sky" (China), "My Voice, My Life" (Hong Kong), "Piku"(India), "Theeb" (Jordan's Official Oscar Entry), "Under Heaven" (Kyrgyzstan), "The Thief of the Mind" (Mongolia), "Kid Kulafu" (Philippines), "Steppe Games"(Republic of Burtya, Russia), "4 O’Clock at Paradise" (Syria), and "From A to B" (United Arab Emirates).
“In every Festival that I have organized, the Special Screenings Category has a unique place in my heart because it is the one that reflects the spirit of the program over all. It is eclectic, it is a journey of discovery, and does not have the pressure of the Competition Category. Each one these movies has a different cinematic language, feel, mood, emotions. "Theeb" from Jordan is a beautiful coming of age movie set during the Ottoman Empire. "Kid Kulafu" (Philippines) is the amazing inspirational story of Emmanuel 'Manny' Pacquiao from his humble beginning as a street kid to become one of the greatest boxers of all time. "4 O’Clock at Paradise" (Syria) is a heart wrenching drama set in today’s war torn Damascus where several characters come in and out from each other’s daily lives and where you literally live between ‘life and death,’ just to name but few,” said Executive Director of Festival and Programming, Georges Chamchoum.
The Festival was created by "Heavenly Nomadic's" producer Sadyk Sher-Niyaz in order to bring the best of a broad selection of Asian World cinema to Los Angeles, drawing greater recognition to the region's wealth of filmmakers and strengthening ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries. All films that participate in the Festival will have a unique chance to be guided through the challenging awards season, showcasing their foreign films to the Academy, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and all Guilds for enhanced exposure, media attention and awards consideration.
Following the Opening Night Red Carpet Awards Gala and Opening Night Film, the Festival features seven days of films at ArcLight Cinemas in downtown Culver City and the luxury iPic Theaters in Westwood.
As previously announced, the 16 films in competition include:[in alphabetical order by country]: "Utopia" (Afghanistan), "Jalal's Story" (Bangladesh), "The Last Reel" (Cambodia), "12 Citizens" (China), "Moira" (Georgia), "Court" (India), "Memories on Stone" (Iraq), "100 Yen Love" (Japan), "Heavenly Nomadic" (Kyrgyzstan), "Void" (Lebanon), "Talakjung vs Tulke" (Nepal), "The Wanted 18" (Palestine), "How to Win at Checkers (Every Time)" (Thailand), "Sivas" (Turkey), "Jackpot" (Vietnam) and "Unsolved Love" (Yakutia, Sakha Republic).
Throughout the week there will also be expert panels on subjects such as Film Financing and Distribution, PR, Marketing and Awards Campaigns and Cross Cultural Collaborations in the Festival’s Filmmaker Lounge located at the Culver Hotel.

Taika Waititi, director of What We Did In The Shadows, is set to land the Thor 3 job...
Well, Kevin Feige and Marvel promised that announcements about Thor 3 and Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 would be on the way this side of Christmas. It looks like they're going to make good on that pledge.
Thor: Ragnarok is due to go into production next year, and it's the next upcoming Marvel project that doesn't have a director attached to it. Well, it didn't. Now it looks like it has.
Taika Waititi, who co-wrote and helmed the sublime vampire comedy What We Do In The Shadows, is reported to be in negotiations to direct Thor 3 for Marvel. He's emerged as the top choice amongst a shortlist that included Rob Letterman (Gulliver's Travels), Rawson Marshall Thurber (Dodgeball) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland).

It’s not featured on the original soundtrack release, which only has 14 songs, but did you know that a previously unreleased track from Tom Petty’s classic Wildflowers album is used in the “Entourage” movie? The cut, “Somewhere Under Heaven,” comes from Wildflowers: All the Rest, a collection that gathers all the material that didn't make Petty's seminal second solo effort, an album that is due sometime later this year hopefully. But dude, don’t let us scare you off with the dad rock talk. Vinnie and the boys hit theaters this week (our review) and while the aforementioned “Entourage” soundtrack only has just over a dozen tracks on it, the full movie features over 30 totally sick songs (most of them anyhow). Apart from the released soundtrack — whic features Pharrell Williams, Diplo, The National, Tame Impala, and Jane’s Addiction’s theme song, “Superhero” — the full extended soundtrack of the...

Down the couture-chain outdoor mall of the Croisette, the Directors' Fortnight opened with French intimist Philippe Garrel's In the Shadow of Women, of which Marie-Pierre has already written. It is one of a set of films by major filmmakers, the others being Arnaud Deplechin and Miguel Gomes, seemingly passed over by the Official Selection of the Festival de Cannes and promptly scooped up by the festival's unpredictable and often more rewarding younger brother. As if to underscore the difference between these two strands—in fact, separate festivals in the same city at the same time—the Fortnight preceded Garrel's new feature with an old short of his, a moving, on-the-ground actuality from the May '68 protests in Paris. Actua 1 is, in the director's words, a kind of "revenge on the news," that is, on the conservative newsreels seen in cinema's at the time. The prescience of the images, the danger they contain,...

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant
Written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Germany, 1972
“Fassbinder is Petra von Kant.” So says frequent star and muse Hanna Schygulla as she discusses Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s working methods and his identification with his characters, both male and female. The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant is a notable case in point. Based on Fassbinder’s own complicated relationship with Günther Kaufmann, the genders are reversed for what became this tale of passion and despair between a successful fashion designer and the younger beauty who enters and upends her personal and professional life. The coveted 'priceless' painting in Wes Anderson's film is actually a McGuffin. So how does it stack up against the works of the real Renaissance masters?
Boy with Apple is a quintessential product of the Czech mannerist, Habsburg high Renaissance, Budapest neo-humanist style. To put it another way, it is a finely constructed piece of nonsense in the same playful spirit as everything else in Wes Anderson's delectable middle European fantasy, The Grand Budapest Hotel.
The plot of Anderson's pink gateau of a movie, with its dowager duchesses, murderers and bakers, turns on the fate of a "priceless" Renaissance portrait of a youth pensively clawing an apple with long, bony fingers. It's only a McGuffin in the end – it's actually been painted for the film by artist Michael Taylor – but Boy with Apple is a fiction within a fiction that pays delicately knowing homage to the art history of old Europe.

1. What motivated you to apply for Berlinale Talents?
I learnt about Berlin Talents a while back. It is a great platform for young filmmakers – meet and interact, discuss films and find future collaborators and partners. I live in Los Angeles and there, young and upcoming American writer/directors talk mostly about Sundance and Tribeca and their artist programs.

Daran created something that looked like a goblin version of Weird Al Yankovich. When called before the judges, he said his focus was on the back, a hunch that was supposed to be like a mouth. It looked like a vagina. An unfinished vagina. Ve is at a loss for words (they probably wouldn’t let her say it looked like a vagina). Neville was surprisingly complimentary, calling it a classic vision of horror that was way too abstract.
Cat made something that was supposed to be insect-like, but instead I saw it as more alien. Ve hated the weak, splotchy paint job; Neville thought the silhouette was cool - but not the one from the...

As Bruce Campbell proved to us all last week when he debunked the previous week’s announcement that Army of Darkness 2 was on its way, news of impending horror sequels should probably always be taken with a grain of salt. Countless sequels have been announced over the years, only to drop off the face of the earth shortly thereafter. It’s just the nature of the game, in a fickle business like the movie-making one.
Back in August we took a look at ten of those sequels that we’re still waiting to see, and today I’ve got ten more for ya. They were all planned, they were all announced, but none of them ever actually happened!

In the late 19th century, a new gimmick was introduced into traveling carnivals as a curious new novelty act. Amongst the bearded lady, elephant rides and siamese twins was a new sideshow attraction: moving pictures. Dark tents with projecting black and white images began to enthralled the public. Over time, moving pictures moved beyond carnival barkers seeking to make a quick buck and into the hands of those who saw a greater potential in the burgeoning new technology. In the hands of scientists and artists, the moving picture transitioned from short clips of racing horses played out for a few quid, to the elaborate storytelling art form that we know today.
In the late 20th century, a similar story of technological curiosity unfolded in the world of computers. Early computers were largely seen as instruments for the military and scientific study. In the shadows of the organizations that operated these giant gymnasium-sized calculators,...

More than 30 years after Stephen King first terrified readers with The Shining, he's written a sequel, drawing on his alcoholism and a near-death experience. He talks about being a drunk father and why the Twilight series is just 'tweenager porn'
Stephen King has written a lot of books – at 56 novels, he's closing in on Agatha Christie – some of which have been great, some of which less so. Still, he says, when people say, "Steve, your books are uneven", he's confident "there's good stuff in all of 'em". Now and then, a story lingers in his mind long after it's published. When fans ask what happened to Charlie McGee in Firestarter, for example, King isn't interested. But when they ask what happened to Danny Torrance, the boy from The Shining, he always found himself wondering. Specifically: what the story would have looked like if Danny's father – mad "white-knuckle alcoholic" Jack Torrance – had "found AA.

Social media pioneer and human bicep Vin Diesel just started filming the next Fast & Furious movie. We know this is true because he posted a picture from the set on his Facebook page. The photo shows Diesel as Dominic Toretto, towering over the camera; although he is wearing a leather jacket, we can surmise that he is wearing one of his trademark black tank tops. Paul Walker is there too, wearing Brian O’Conner’s trademark three-sizes-too-large T-Shirt.
There’s also a young lady who looks unconscious/drugged/dead, and a pretty pond; also, both Diesel and Walker are looking at someone offscreen.

The show starts off at home with Alex as he’s icing Jo’s bruised and bloody face. Jo confirms (what we already assumed) that her boyfriend, Jason, hit her. Alex puffs up his chest and heads out the door to track down and destroy Jason. A scene later Alex brings a severely beaten Jason into the hospital. Jason has a brain bleed and Alex pleads with Derek to help him so he won’t die. Once Cristina and Meredith get word that Jason is in critical condition they corner Alex to find out what really happened.

News.
The news that Francis Ford Coppola was moving back to the Paramount lot was exciting enough, but now it sounds like the director has some big plans in store:
"I have a secret investor that has infinite money. I learned what I learned from my three smaller films, and wanted to write a bigger film. I’ve been writing it. It’s so ambitious so I decided to go to L.A. and make a film out of a studio that has all the costume rentals, and where all the actors are. My story is set in New York. I have a first draft. I’m really ready for a casting phase. Movies are big in proportion to the period. It starts in the middle of the ‘20s, and there are sections in the ‘30s and the late ‘40s, and it goes until the late ‘60s."

Update: The official list has been revealed and the total is a record 71 movies. I have updated the list directly below or you can check it out here. The original article follows. I have been tracking the Oscar Foreign Language submissions again this year, as I have for the past several years, and it looks like we finally have a full field as I expect we will be seeing an official press release from the Academy some time this week. This year we have five more submissions already over last year as the total has now reached 68 submissions compared to last year's 63. This, despite, Iran boycotting the Oscars this year due to the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims, which has sparked so much controversy as of late. To reach the total of 68 films I have just finished adding 16 more titles to the list from the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Argentina,...

To siphon out front-runners is never easy in this category, though there are a few that stick out immediately.

Indian Oscar entry Anurag Basu’s “Barfi” will have to compete with 64 films from around the world. Barfi’s chance will be sealed on January 24th 2013 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the five nominees.
The deadline for submission of entries for the foreign language category got over yesterday on October 1st.
63 countries had sent their entries for the category last year.
Iran, the winner of last year (A separation) decided not to send an entry this year in protest of a youtube film that ridiculed the prophet.
The final list of submissions is yet to be announced by the academy.

You think it’s too early for this? Trust me, it’s not and that’s exactly why we’re here today to start our little chat about the official foreign language submissions for Oscar.
Nothing to be surprised about, after all – these titles are already familiar to you, mostly because of their success in some Film Festivals. Check out the rest of this report to see the list of announced submissions.
As you’re about to see, quite interesting list of movies from all over the world. Unfortunately we don’t have trailers and official synopsis part for every single film, but I’m sure we’ll soon have more material to share with you.
In the mean time, we will inform you that Kim Ki-duk‘s movie, Pieta, which won Golden Lion statue for best movie at the Venice Film Festival this year, has been submitted by South...

Anurag Basu’s Barfi to compete with Michael Haneke’s “Amour” and Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta”
Anurag Basu’s “Barfi” might have lured the selectors at home but it’s unlikely to have an easy ride ahead. Basu will have to compete against the veterans like Michael Haneke who took home a second Palme d’Or at Cannes this year for his “Amour” (Official Austrian Entry). Closer home in Asia, Korean Master Kim Ki-duk will also pose an equal threat to the Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi. Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” clinched the Golden Lion at Venice this year.
“Barfi” was declared official Oscar entry from India on Saturday night by the Film Federation of India. Other Indian films which were in race included Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur Parts I and II,...
