From Geena Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis, to blaxploitation royalty Pam Grier; Joe Dante and Roland Emmerich, to genre legend Peter Hyams topping the bill – 2024’s Forbidden Worlds Film Festival promises the biggest (and maddest) year yet for genre fans in the South West.
Firing into its third year of taking over arguably Bristol’s best cinema screen – the abandoned IMAX at Bristol Aquarium, Forbidden Worlds has never been one to cater to the masses. It’s a true one-screen wonder of a festival, promising the most unusual and sought-after of cinematic treats; big, mad, weird shit projected large and loud, for three straight days.
For example, while 2024’s edition promises an explosive opening night with a 30th anniversary screening of none other than Keanu Reeves action classic The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down (otherwise known as Speed), look as far as the following day’s line-up and you’ll...

Kevin Grevioux, who created the “Underworld” franchise, and wrote and directed “King of Killers,” will direct action-adventure film “Shurika.”
The film will go into production later this year and rights are being pre-sold by Reiko Bradley’s Eclipse Intl. at the European Film Market, which accompanies the Berlin Film Festival.
The film is adapted by Grevioux from a graphic novel published by his Darkstorm Comics & Media company, about a biracial Black Japanese woman. She had been hidden from her Yakuza grandfather by her mother after he had her African American husband killed because of their taboo relationship. Years later, while trying to find her birth mother, the woman finds herself caught in a conflict between the ninja clan who raised her and the Japanese underworld.

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

I still remember the exact moment when I became aware of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s presence in the entertainment industry. Although he had played the villain in No Retreat, No Surrender and made his leading man debut with Bloodsport, I didn’t know about him until the VHS release of Kickboxer. That’s when a local video store put up a large poster of the film – which the store’s owner gestured to while telling my mom and I about this new guy named Van Damme, who was meant to be the next action star along the lines of Stallone and Schwarzenegger. We rented the movie… and I’ve been a fan of Van Damme ever since. So I think it’s very cool that Diamond Select Toys will be releasing a Jean-Claude Van Damme action figure next year.

This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.

As Adam Driver accidentally winds up 65m years ago, facing not just dinosaurs but an asteroid, we count down the best films about going backwards, or forwards, through the ages
Regardless of what anyone says, I believe in my heart that Timecop was greenlit because someone showed a studio executive a picture of Jean-Claude Van Damme and said the word “Timecop” out loud, at which point they had to throw a script together as quickly as possible. Nothing about Timecop makes sense. It is the most 90s film ever made.

One of the trailers that seemingly went under the radar during this year's Super Bowl commercial slot is the upcoming sci-fi film starring Adam Driver, 65.
Here's everything you need to know:
What Is It about?
Following a devastating crash on a seemingly unfamiliar planet, pilot Mills finds himself stranded on Earth during the Late Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years in the past. With little hope of rescue but one last opportunity, Mills and Koa, the only other survivor, embark on a treacherous journey across an unfamiliar landscape teeming with dangerous prehistoric beasts (dinosaurs!), as they fight to stay alive. This epic tale chronicles their desperate struggle to survive in a time long before humanity, and the incredible obstacles they must overcome to stay alive.

“I have a mantra,” says director Peter Hyams. “It was something me and my camera operator, Steve Campanelli had: each morning before we went to shoot we’d put our arms around each other, like football players, and say four things: 1. Go bigger or go home. 2. If it can’t be fixed with a hammer, it can’t be fixed. 3. If it doesn’t fit, force it. 4. Let’s blow shit up.”
As mantras go, it’s hard to argue with the results. With a career that’s included prescient conspiracy thriller Capricorn One (1977), with Elliott Gould and James Brolin; sci-fi Western Outland (1981) with Sean Connery, the Gene Hackman/Anne Archer actioner Narrow Margin (1990) and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s time-traveling fight film Timecop (1994), Hyams, has secured his place in cult cinema history.

The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading indie film fest, will honor father and son genre filmmakers Peter and John Hymas, with a joint retrospective.
Father Peter Hymas is best known for his cult films of the 1970s and 80s, including the conspiracy drama Capricorn One (1977), about a plot to fake a space mission to Mars, the sci-fi Western Outland (1981) starring Sean Connery, and 2010: The Year We Made Contact (1984), a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey. In 1994, Hymas scored a late-career hit with Timecop, a time-traveling action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The Mussels from Brussels would play a major role in the career of son John Hymas, who revived Van Damme’s other sci-fi action franchise, Universal Soldier, with two sequels: Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012). At some point in his career, Jean-Claude Van Damme entered a curious state of constantly fighting his way back into the limelight. Van Damme burst onto the film scene in 1988 with the release of Newt Arnold's fight film "Bloodsport," and became one of the more notable action stars of the 1990s, appearing in "Kickboxer," Roland Emmerich's "Universal Soldier," John Woo's "Hard Target," sand titles such as "Timecop" and "Street Fighter." By the end of the 1990s, however, Van Damme's films seem to have fallen out of favor, and the Muscles from Brussels entered something of a fallow period that he...

Is it me, or have Image been putting out some particularly good books of late? They’ve always been pretty consistent in terms of quality, and pretty diverse in terms of content, but of lately they’ve been hitting quite a few home runs. I wanted to review an Image book this time round, and it was quite tough to choose from all the great stuff out there, Geiger by Geoff Johns especially coming very close. This book jumped out the most though, with a blurb that promised future crime syndicates and time travel, can’t really go wrong there. I’ve also not read a book by Declan Shalvey I didn’t enjoy, so my hopes for this book are high. In these days of very crowded comic book shelves, you need to get noticed,...

A homicidal hockey mascot. A firefighter-turned-fire marshal-turned-Stanley Cup Finals goalie. Lethal gym equipment. A magnificent helicopter escape plan. Lots and lots of roundhouse kicks. All of these elements and more make Sudden Death, released on this date in 1995, the most glorious action extravaganza of superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme’s career.
Essentially Die Hard At A Hockey Game, Sudden Death tells the tale of divorced former firefighter Darren McCord (Jcvd), who, after a workplace tragedy, has become a fire marshal at Pittsburgh Civic Arena. For his young son Tyler (Ross Malinger)’s birthday, Darren is bringing Tyler and daughter Emily (Whittni Wright) to the office. The occasion? Game 7 of the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals, an imagined rematch of the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals bout between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vice President Daniel Binder (Raymond J. Barry) is in attendance with a prestigious entourage in a skybox.

Syd Mead, the visionary futurist who worked on such classic fantasy/sci-fi films as Tron, Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, died today in Pasadena. He was 86.
Roger Servick, his spouse and business partner of 40 years, told Deadline that Mead had been in failing health due to lymphoma cancer and he was undergoing treatment at City of Hope in Duarte, CA.
Servick, who was by Mead’s side when he died, said his last words were: “I’m done here. They’re coming to take me back.”
Mead’s art department credits include Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Aliens, Timecop, Mission: Impossible III, Elysium and Tomorrowland. He also appeared in numerous documentaries over the years.
Last month he was named the recipient of the William Cameron Menzies Award from the Art Directors Guild, for his innovative neo-futuristic concept artwork on numerous legendary movies. The Adg had planned...

Syd Mead, a visual effects artist and American industrial designer who helped imagine the futuristic look of science fiction classics like “Blade Runner” and “Aliens,” has died. He was 86.
A representative with the Art Directors Guild, which was meant to honor Mead in February with the William Cameron Menzies Award, told TheWrap that Mead died on Monday in Pasadena, California due to complications from lymphoma cancer, for which he had been undergoing treatment for the past year.
Mead was known as a “visual futurist” whose concept art and architectural background served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi, as well as other films such as “2010,” “Tron” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” More recently, Mead served as a consultant on the films “Tomorrowland,” “Elysium” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

Appearance: Low budget sci-fi/horror bang-bang film about a group of oversized ex-soldiers on a mission to retrieve an alien cargo from a group of eeeeeevil mercenaries. It’s a film where men are men; they have big guns, and all the usual cliches apply.

Spoilers for Stay Tuneed lie ahead.
What would you say dates a film or TV show?
Is it computers? Maybe, although once you get past the crazy notion of having to attach your landline receiver to a modem the size of a cereal box, WarGames still functions as a decent techno-thriller. Last year this site wrote about hacker-centric caper movie Sneakers and noted that it has actually aged rather well.
Phones perhaps? There’s a moment in Lethal Weapon where Murtaugh stops to make a call on his ‘mobile’. He gets out of his car on a bridge (an elevated point for a good signal I suppose) and has to lug a heavy looking briefcase containing the battery with him (presumably...

It’s hard to imagine the indefatigable Jean-Claude Van Damme ever tapping out, but after wrapping his new Amazon series, Jean-Claude Van Johnson, the actor needed time to recharge after a surprisingly emotional experience on what, on the surface, seemed like a lighthearted action-comedy show.
“I truly believed in every one of those characters, and it destroyed me -- physically, mentality. It ripped me up,” Van Damme recalls to Et. “At the end of the show, I was very tired, like, ‘Aaaahhh.’”
Most action stars of the ‘90s traded on a grim stoicism, dispatching enemies and saving nations with little more than a grunt. But Van Damme was different, using a light touch and a charming personality to go along with his spinning jump kicks to become an international superstar, one equally at ease with kicking a mascot in the face in Sudden Death and swapping jokes with the Friends gang.

In 2017, there’s a show for everyone, and typically that’s a good thing. There’s so much demand for fresh content and so many content providers looking to stand out, fresh stories from distinct voices populate an ever-diversifying television landscape. In other words, this is a world that could easily have room for a show where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays Jean-Claude Van Damme, a movie star who’s also a highly trained international spy.
But for as nutty as “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” sounds, its execution feels too familiar to earn its spot. Though the story-building in the pilot is clever enough to provide ample opportunity for good old-fashioned fun, too many easy jokes and half-baked movie homages keep the six-episode first season from fulfilling its potential as the sharp meta successor to “Episodes,” “The Comedians,” or even Van Damme’s 2008 film, “Jcvd.”

Anyone for monkey baseball? We examine the weird and wonderful unmade scripts of the Planet Of The Apes series
In 2006, screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver were inspired by footage of domesticated chimpanzees who were unable to adjust to our lifestyles to write a sci-fi horror spec script that they called Genesis. Apparently, it was a while before the two of them realised that they were writing a Planet Of The Apes movie.
Their resultant pitch to 20th Century Fox led to 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, the excellent, emotional prequel/reboot of the franchise that led to 2014's Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and recent trilogy topper, War For The Planet Of The Apes. Together, the three films take Caesar from domestication to domination and have been huge critical and financial hits for the studio.

There was a time when you could count on action movies to have cheeky, playfully-on-the-nose titles. Jean-Claude Van Damme, in particular, was the king in this arena, with classics - yes, classics! - like Sudden Death (terrorists take over a hockey rink during the Stanley Cup finals), Double Impact (where Jcvd plays his own twin brother), and Timecop (about a time traveling police officer). But these days action movies have forgotten how to have fun with their titles. Everything is either a character's name (John Wick, Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne) or a generic noun (The Accountant, Criminal, The Gunman). But one actor is still keeping their self-aware action movie title game strong. We are of course talking about Liam Neeson. Sure, Taken 1-3 may be generic, but...

When it came to sci-fi movies, 1996 was a crowded year: at the high end of the budget spectrum we had the invasion movies Independence Day and Mars Attacks; towards the middle we had John Carpenter's disappointing Snake Plissken sequel Escape From La, while Rutger Hauer starred in the cheap and cheerful Crossworlds and the brilliantly titled Omega Doom.
Throw in the startlingly botched Island Of Doctor Moreau, Star Trek: First Contact and Stuart Gordon's fun sci-fi oddity Space Truckers, and you have a busy 12 months in genre movies. Somewhat lost in the static was The Arrival, a nifty genre thriller which had the misfortune of coming out just a few weeks before the bigger, splashier Independence Day. Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?
In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.
Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...
Lance Young
Senior production VP, Paramount Pictures
Pictured in the article on an office swivel chair with some snazzy purple socks, Lance Young, Premiere wrote, had been “groomed for big things since joining Paramount at the age of 23”. He was 30 at the time the article was published, and...

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a fictionalised version of himself in this action movie spoof Amazon comedy pilot…
Like a supermodel launching a make-up line or an athlete turning coach, playing a parody version of yourself is one way for past-their-prime movie stars to keep the cheques coming. Jean-Claude Van Damme’s TV roles so far have exclusively been as him - on Friends in 1996, on Las Vegas in 2004, on Robot Chicken in 2009 and in double denim and a mullet wig for Coors Light since 2012. Now he’s playing himself in Amazon comedy pilot Jean-Claude Van Johnson, an action-movie spoof from The Expendables writer Dave Callaham.
More properly, he plays a fictionalised Jean-Claude Van Damme, not only a former action movie star but also a former undercover operative, part of a Hollywood network that uses movie-making as a front for covert black ops. (Should Amazon pick it up to series,...

When i first heard the news Jean Claude Van Damme would be starring in his own TV series, i was very excited. Here, Van Damme plays himself and to be honest he is very good at it, showcasing his acting ability flicking through dramatic to comedy with ease (Yes we get to see some of his trademark kicks).
Jean Clade Van Johnson opens with Jean Claude Van Damme staring at the camera, speaking about his old films such as Bloodsport and Timecop, ““My name is Jean-Claude Van Damme and I used to be super famous.Maybe you’ve seen Timecop, which is like Looper only a million times better” and how right he is.
He has it all, his own mansion, own car, own perfume and women on the side – but what he doesn’t have is the woman he loves and the big fame anymore.
After the opening sequence,...

"Maybe you’ve seen TimeCop, which is like Looper, starring Bruce Willis but like a million times better." Guess who's back? Back again. It’s no secret I’m the biggest Jean-Claude Van Damme fan in the world. If you think you have a one-up on me, meet me at the Kumite. (Caveat: Must be under 5’5’’ and weight less than 140 pounds.) Jcvd has seen glory and hell in his lifetime, and over the last few years, approaching his golden years, he’s having the time of his life. He gained critical acclaimed for his honest, poignant portrayal of himself in the terrific Jcvd (that monologue, man. Deep.) This film blew fans and critics alike away — to date, he’s the only action star to acknowledge his faults on film and...

“Jean-Claude Van Johnson”
“’Timecop’ is like ‘Looper’ with Bruce Willis, but a million times better,” is just one of the gems spoken in “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” which is as gloriously ridiculous as its title.
What the Amazon pilot lacks in plot — action star Jean-Claude Van Damme comes out of retirement to act as a private contractor specializing in kicking ass and doing the splits — it makes up for with indiscriminate jabs at everything and anyone, including its star, Hollywood, pretentious foodies and even America’s Undulating Beefcake, Channing Tatum. A surprising appearance by Phylicia Rashad, who gamely plays Jean-Claude’s agent, is a comic revelation. She delivers the most absurd movie pitches with such enthusiasm that we’re ready to sign up for the “P.F. Chang’s” biopic ourselves.
The only real disappointment is the lackluster treatment of Jean-Claude’s love interest Vanessa (Kat Foster), who isn’t given much to work with story-wise.

When Sam shows up at your door, usually your luck has officially run out, but Mezco Toyz’s Sam doll is an exception to that rule. Accompanying Sam in today’s Horror Highlights, we have a new clip from Me and My Mates Vs. The Zombie Apocalypse, a trailer for the short film Bad Acid, and Echoes graphic novel cover art and release details.
Mezco Toyz’s Trick ‘R Treat Doll: From Mezco Toyz: “He may look like a child dressed for trick or treating, but Sam is the personification of Halloween itself.
Straight from the film Trick ‘r Treat comes Sam, the enforcer of the rules of Halloween. Beneath his apparently innocent scarecrow mask is his misshapen, demonic head. Part pumpkin, part supernatural being, Sam shows no mercy to those who show disrespect to his holiday.
Sam comes complete with his infamous and mysterious sack and his deadly oversized lollipop.

Deadpool's opening weekend proves that people will turn out R-rated comic book movies. But they have been doing since the 1970s...
Deadpool – an X-Men spin-off for Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Merc With The Mouth’ - is in cinemas now, and in spite of its R-rated tag, it's shattered the box office ceiling for February releases with a stunning $260m global opening weekend. Maybe this is the point where Hollywood realises that if it makes the right R-rated movie - Deadpool, rather than Jonah Hex - people will turn up.
That R stands for Restricted, meaning that under-17s in America will havehad to be accompanied by an adult if they wanted to see Deadpool in cinemas this weekend. It’s a 15-certificate film to me and other denizens of the British Isles, meaning that no under-15s this side of the pond will be permitted to see it in cinemas.
