There’s nothing super about the opening weekend of Disney’s superhero adventure “The Marvels,” which whiffed at the box office with $63 million internationally and $110 million globally.
Those figures are far behind expectations and rank as one of the worst worldwide debuts in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“The Marvels” is the 33rd MCU film and the sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar behemoth, “Captain Marvel,” which debuted to a massive $302 million internationally and $455 million globally. That film, which introduced Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, was fortuitously sandwiched between two of the biggest movies of all time, 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
But there are other reasons behind the brutal drop in ticket sales. “Captain Marvel” came at a time when the MCU — an unrivaled franchise that has delivered $30 billion globally across 15 years — could do no wrong at the box office. In the time since, Disney has inundated viewers with countless spinoffs,...

The rocky current state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is partly due to its over-extension into too many streaming shows of varying quality — but at the same time, the best of those series have introduced some of the current MCU’s most promising characters. In the just-released The Marvels, the brightest spots are the new teammates who join Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers: Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) of Disney+’s Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, first played by Teyonah Parris on the single best MCU show, WandaVision. (The character,...

What a difference four years makes. When “Captain Marvel” hit theaters in March 2019, it landed what was then the seventh-highest domestic opening weekend across Marvel Cinematic Universe entries with $153 million — a colossal figure that only one 2023 release, “Barbie,” has exceeded. Now, several superhero entries later, its new sequel “The Marvels” likely won’t be able to reach even a third of its predecessor’s debut.
The comic book film landed the second-lowest opening day gross ever across the 32 features in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, earning $21.5 million from 4,030 venues. That includes $6.6 million in previews. It barely surpassed 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” which holds the record for the MCU’s lowest domestic opening day at $21.46 million, and falls behind series-starter “Ant-Man” ($22.6 million), not adjusted for inflation. If “The Marvels” doesn’t pick up the pace, it will trail behind the opening weekend grosses of both those films to secure a franchise-worst debut.

Nia DaCosta spoke to "a lot of Marvel directors" before agreeing to helm 'The Marvels. The 33-year-old filmmaker wanted some advice and guidance before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe so turned to the likes of 'Black Panther's Ryan Coogler, 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Destin Daniel Cretton, and Chloe Zhao, who oversaw 'Eternals', before signing up because she knew working under the banner would be a very different opportunity to anything else she had done. She told The Hollywood Reporter: “I talked to a lot of Marvel directors.“It’s such a specific experience and they make movies in such a unique way, it was really cool to get some insider knowledge.” And Nia found James Gunn, who directed the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' series, to be the most helpful. She said: “He really contextualised what we were doing and how hard it was.

Marvel Studios is back with its first new movie since “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and, should the release schedule hold, its last new movie until the third “Deadpool,” which doesn’t come out until next July.
This being a Marvel movie, there are characters old and new to keep track of, as our heroes jet across the galaxy in an attempt to thwart a massive threat to our world and countless others.
Here’s a complete cast and character guide for “The Marvels.” The only folks we have left out are the ones you definitely don’t want spoiled.
Marvel Studios Brie Larson as Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel
Carol Danvers is a former test pilot turned superhero, whose origins were traced in “Captain Marvel” and who was last seen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” lending a hand in what is now canonically referred to as the Battle of Earth.

When Nia DaCosta was offered the job to direct The Marvels, she already had studio experience with 2021’s Candyman. But that doesn’t mean she didn’t ask her friends for advice before joining the big machine that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. DaCosta spoke to a large swath of directors from Marvel’s roster, including Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler, Eternals‘ Chloé Zhao and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Destin Daniel Cretton.
“I talked to a lot of Marvel directors,” DaCosta tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s such a specific experience and they make movies in such a unique way, it was really cool to get some insider knowledge.” Of everyone she talked to, DaCosta says Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn was perhaps the most helpful.

It’s also a continuation of the events of both the Ms Marvel TV show (2022), which introduced Iman Vellani as Pakistani-American New Jersey teen superhero Kamala Khan / Ms Marvel, and WandaVision, which showed Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) getting light-based superpowers of her own.
The plot is essentially a superhero team-up story, of the type beloved by comics fans everywhere. It begins with Kree revolutionary leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) discovering a cosmic bangle that is identical to the one that gives Kamala her powers.

The Marvels opens in 665 cinemas through Disney. This is slightly fewer than recent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) titles Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 (708), Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania (680) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (704); the last MCU film to open on fewer screens was Chloe Zhao’s Eternals in 2021 (646).

Nia DaCosta survived the roller coaster of making “The Marvels,” but London’s rush hour traffic threatens to make her sick.
It’s late October, weeks from the Nov. 10 release of the $250 million superhero movie, and DaCosta is conducting a Zoom interview from the back seat of a car as it inches toward her home. “I apologize for the motion,” she says.
The setting is apropos for how DaCosta’s life has played out over the past seven years — racing from one project to the next. DaCosta was 28 when her debut feature, “Little Woods,” starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James, won the Nora Ephron Award for female filmmakers at the Tribeca Film Festival. Then, with 2021’s “Candyman,” she became the first Black female director to hit No. 1 at the box office on opening weekend. When that milestone was announced, she was already on set for “The Marvels.” At 31, DaCosta became...

Have we finally reached peak blockbuster running time? In the last year alone, the space has been flooded with kidney-testing lengths — “Killers of the Flower Moon” (206 minutes and no intermissions allowed!), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (192 minutes), “Oppenheimer” (180 minutes), “John Wick: Chapter 4” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (both 169 minutes), and “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1” (163 minutes) — but there are some signs that this particular worm has turned.
The most significant example is this week’s release of “The Marvels” (Disney), which is the shortest film in MCU history at “only” 105 minutes. “Avengers: Endgame,” MCU’s biggest hit, clocked in at 181 minutes. The four most recent MCU franchise entries were 126 minutes or fewer, with “Thor: Love and Thunder” under two hours. In all, eight MCU films were less than two hours, which makes the difference a matter of degree.

“The Marvels,” the 33rd installment in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, is barreling toward an unfortunate box office distinction.
The big-budget superhero sequel is expected to generate just $60 million to $65 million from 4,000 North American theaters in its opening weekend, which would be one of the lowest debuts in MCU history. That ignominious badge currently belongs to 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” ($55.4 million), followed by 2015’s “Ant-Man” ($57.2 million), not adjusted for inflation. The standalone “Hulk” movie was a rare misfire for Marvel, generating just $264.8 million worldwide, but “Ant-Man” eventually grossed enough ($519 million globally) to merit a trilogy.
Based on current projections, “The Marvels” will also brutally drop from its predecessor, 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” which first introduced Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and launched to a heroic $153 million. That movie had extra momentum because of its prime release date between two of the biggest movies of all time, 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is making its return to the big screen once again as "The Marvels" is hitting theaters. This not only serves as a sequel to 2019's "Captain Marvel," but it's also building on Disney+ shows like "WandaVision" and "Ms. Marvel" with a pair of new heroes joining Carol Danvers to form a new super team. Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani are uniting with Brie Larson as Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively. As the catchphrase goes: Higher, further, faster.
It should not be lost on MCU fans that this is the first new team we've been introduced to in some time. If we don't count the trio of Spider-Men at the end of "No Way Home," we would have to go back to "Eternals." That makes this an important film in Phase 5. But is it important enough to have a credits scene? That's what we're here to discuss!

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta isn’t a stranger to stories about the power of vengefulness or forgiveness. Her directorial debut “Little Woods” sees its protagonist (Tessa Thompson) trying to create a life when local vengeance gets in the way, while “Candyman” sees artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) get ever closer to folklore’s Candyman, the vengeful spirit of a wrongly murdered man who can overtake your life if you whisper enough times into a mirror.

Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is a grounding contribution to a gluttonous and increasingly perplexing Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The conventional film pulsates with a quiet force propelled by the sincere bond between its three protagonists. Brie Larson reprises her role as Carol Danvers, the amnesiac pilot from the 2019 blockbuster Captain Marvel; Teyonah Parris is Monica Rambeau, whom viewers saw in WandaVision; and relative newcomer Iman Vellani is Kamala Khan, the star of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. DaCosta’s kinetic direction and intimate storytelling style lets audiences see this trio — whose lives collide in unexpected ways — from new and entertaining vantage points.
The Marvels picks up where Captain Marvel left off. Flashbacks in the first half hour provide a broad framework, but it’s worth revisiting the disjointed predecessor — in which Danvers vowed to end the genocidal war between the Kree and Skrulls — for firmer footing. DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and...

For 15 years, a new Marvel Studios movie would be something to celebrate, but this weekend, we might see the sure-fire hitmaker (and superhero movies in general) be given the ultimate test. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Oscar-winning actor Brie Larson is back as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in “The Marvels,” over four years since the character was first introduced in Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” in March 2019. That movie opened with $153 million domestically, ended up making $426.8 million in North America and then another $702 million overseas for a global total of $1.1 billion. That sort of performance almost guarantees a sequel, but Captain Marvel instead became a key component of “Avengers: Endgame.”

The original Candy Man, Willy Wonka, comes to theaters right before Christmas, bringing scrumdiddlyumptious sweets, jaunty tunes, and cheer to the holiday season! Early tracking for the Paul King-directed origin story is here, with the Quorum predicting a $20M-$23M opening. This estimate is early, and predictions for Wonka‘s pre-Christmas box office launch could increase the closer we get to showtime.
Promotion for Wonka is doing an admirable job of getting the film in front of potential audience members, with two trailers, a GQ cover story, and a guest spot for Timothée Chalamet (Willy Wonka) scheduled for November 11, 2023. The trailers enticed 31M and 9M viewers, respectively, with audiences eager to meet Chalamet’s young chocolatier and Hugh Grant’s wise-cracking Oompa-Loompa.

With guest judge Paula Abdul behind the judges’ table, the top eight couples will perform to songs from some of the most iconic music videos of all time on Tuesday. Where’s “Trl” when you need it? And if you’re thinking Jason Mraz should do one of his own videos, well, no dice. After the individual dances, they’ll split into quartets for the team dance — and there’s a very obvious split this time: the four oldest celebs vs. the four youngest.
See the full list of dances below.
Individual routines
Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy: jazz (“Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani)
Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber: quickstep (“Candyman” by Christina Aguilera)
Harry Jowsey and Rylee Arnold: jazz (“It’s Gonna Be Me” by *Nsync)

Today, Variety published a feature about the ongoing troubles behind the scenes at Marvel Studios, and in addition to several major revelations about the issues involved with its new "Blade" film, potentially replacing Jonathan Majors' Kang with Doctor Doom, and even maybe reuniting the original Avengers squad, it reveals there have been four weeks of reshoots on this month's theatrical release, "The Marvels."
Variety says "The Marvels" reshoots were to "bring coherence to a tangled storyline." Tweaking things up to the last minute has always been the Marvel way (the studio famously added its post-credits scene to "The Avengers" after the film's world premiere), but four weeks of additional photography is longer than usual -- even for a Marvel film.
For years before Marvel Studios came along, if a movie underwent reshoots, the perception in the fan community (fair or not) was that the film in question must be in deep trouble,...

There are just two more months to 2023, but November is important, since it’s the start of the holiday season with studios releasing big sequels and prequels, awards movies, and others that might stick around through the New Year. Read on for Gold Derby’s November 2023 box office preview.
“The Marvels” (Marvel/Disney – Nov. 10)
Normally, a new film from Marvel Studios would be a no-brainer to win the month, but audiences seem to be losing interest in superhero movies. Oscar winner Brie Larson returns as Carol Danvers in this direct sequel to the 2019 “Captain Marvel” movie that opened with $153.4 million and made $426 million just in North America. With that kind of showing, you’d expect a lot of anticipation its sequel, especially with the return of Samuel L. It’s always a good time to revisit the “Final Destination” movies, one of the goriest, most (re)watchable horror franchises of all time.
The cast of characters trying to dodge Death in each film changes (for the most part), but the enigmatic and menacing coroner William Bludworth (“Candyman” star Tony Todd) is in every installment except the fourth movie.
Here’s where you can stream all five movies, where people who survived catastrophic disasters are killed off in inventively gruesome ways.
Tony Todd in “Final Destination” (New Line Cinema)
“Final Destination” (2000)
In the first film, student Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a terrifying vision that the plane his French class is taking to Paris will explode, killing everyone. He freaks out and leaves the plane, as do several other students and one teacher. The flight does, in fact, go up in flames … and then people begin dying in the...

Have you been wondering about "Wonder Man"? You're in good company. Given the recent news that Marvel is slowing its roll on releasing new TV shows and revamping its television production process to, well, make more sense, the future of most MCU shows is a bit nebulous. It's not that these shows won't happen, but between SAG-AFTRA's ongoing fight for fair pay and the entertainment industry's general post-pandemic belt-tightening, any show that's not already on the release schedule feels a little bit up in the air.
Thankfully, one of the most intriguing upcoming Marvel shows, "Wonder Man," still seems to be in the works as of publication time. With a crowded slate of shows on the horizon, including "Hawkeye" spinoff "Echo," "WandaVision" spinoff "Agatha: Darkhold Diaries", Riri Williams-led series "Ironheart," and reboot "Daredevil: Born Again," it's hard to remember what phase of the MCU we're even in anymore, nonetheless what's releasing next.

The Spider-Man family of media is synonymous with some of the best actors in the business. The movies are iconic thanks to the stars who bring the stories to life, and the cartoons are legendary for some of the best line deliveries you’ll ever hear. However, unlike properties such as Batman, no one actor has truly embodied the wall-crawler or his amazing friends (or deadly enemies). So, Insomniac Games had their work cut out for them when it came time to cast for Marvel’s Spider-Man.
To say Insomniac knocked it out of the park with their selected voices would be an understatement, so of course they were primed to return for subsequent entries, including Spider-Man 2. The game is full of returning characters, many of whom are voiced by the same actors, but the main selling point are all the new faces. During the game, players will get...

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.

In July 2022, on the heels of the premiere of his third feature “Nope,” Jordan Peele went viral when he responded to a tweet calling him the greatest horror director of all time. “Sir, please put the phone down I beg you,” the writer/director wrote. “Sorry. I love your enthusiasm, but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!”
That’s just one of many examples of Peele professing his love for classic horror cinema. Even before he established himself as one of the industry’s top filmmakers, Peele was always open about his love for the sometimes taboo genre. In recent years, he has used his newfound status as a darling of the horror community to wax poetic about the many scary subgenres he enjoys. From 1980s slashers to meticulously crafted contemporary psychological horror, Peele’s appreciation for the art of the scare only seems to increase as his filmography grows.

Jordan Peele wasn't always one of the greatest horror filmmakers in the world. First he was a prolific comedian, starring in five seasons of the late-night sketch comedy series "Mad TV," impersonating celebrities left and right. Then he created his own show with his fellow "Mad TV" alumni Keegan-Michael Key, appropriately titled "Key & Peele," and that show was a major comedy hit that's still actively memed to this day.
It made sense that, when Jordan Peele moved into the realm of movies, his first project was the phenomenally funny buddy comedy "Keanu." Peele co-wrote the screenplay and starred opposite Key as mild-mannered friends who have to step outside their comfort zone and into the world of violent crime in order to rescue their kidnapped, adorable kitten. Peele may not have directed it, but it's a delight, and established Peele as a force to be reckoned with in motion picture comedies as well as TV.

There is a handful of Hollywood directors who gained recognition for their work on popular franchises, and Marvel Cinematic Universe is certainly one of those. Be honest; how many of you knew about the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, or Jon Watts before they directed multiple MCU movies? However, when it comes to studio movies, people tend to forget that a producer is a person who’s pulling the strings, and directors are hired to do the job the way they are told.
A director is rarely allowed complete creative freedom in these franchises. Yes, there are some exceptions, like Sam Raimi’s work approach on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ or Taika Waititi’s comedy style in the last two ‘Thor’ movies. Still, you will rarely find a director who is hired to do an MCU movie alone without any studio interference.

Nia DaCosta is opening up about her time directing upcoming superhero film The Marvels.
The writer-director spoke with Vanity Fair ahead of the Nov. 10 release date of the Captain Marvel sequel, starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani. In the conversation, she revealed she turned to one of her fellow Marvel directors in particular during production when she was overwhelmed and stressed.
While she loved filming The Marvels, she admitted there were days when she texted Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to vent about how she was feeling.

Filmmaker Nia DaCosta was skeptical when it came to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a director, and even called in her own team of “Avengers” for advice. The “Candyman” helmer revealed to Vanity Fair that, before signing on to direct “The Marvels,” she contacted fellow MCU filmmakers Chloé Zhao, James Gunn, and Taika Waititi to confirm that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was worth working for.
“Are they going to kill me and destroy my soul?,” DaCosta recalled asking her fellow filmmakers, all of whom, like DaCosta, joined the superhero fray after directing independent features. “Is Kevin Feige a bad man? And they were like, ‘No, he’s just a good guy who was a nerd.'”
During “The Marvels” production, DaCosta also texted “Shang-Chi” and Marvel Phase 5 lead director Destin Daniel Cretton to vent when she felt “overwhelmed” and “so stressed.” “Sometimes you’d be in a scene and you’d be like,...

One of the oldest horror tropes in the book, the old, dusty, unfinished basement/crawl space setting has provided a cornucopia of stories about the universal fear of what lurks in the darkest and least-coziest corners of our homes. Yet, in Wes Craven’s 1991 lesser mainstream, still beloved cult favorite The People Under the Stairs, the what’s-hiding-in-the-basement angle is reversed and subverted, as the real monsters are not the othered hiding in the basement, and the home invaders are the heroes. Three decades later, the blueprint for People has imprinted itself onto a couple of other soon-to-be cult favorites, last year’s Barbarian and this summer’s Cobweb— all of which share much more in common than merely their set-ups.

Not too many details have been revealed, but this installment is said to revolve around a plot involving first responders. The 2022 year in film belongs to horror fans. From the sicko slasher that could "Terrifier 2," to satirical indie hit, "Bodies Bodies Bodies," and Jordan Peele's blockbuster-sized nightmare, "Nope," horror has consistently been bringing audiences back to theaters for thrills and chills. But by far, one of the biggest success stories of the year belongs to Zach Cregger's directorial debut, "Barbarian," a subversive, mystery-box horror film that's ten steps ahead of the viewer. Though it was minimally marketed, the film has thrived through pure word of mouth and enthusiasm from horror fans.
In a time where it feels as though the low-budget original studio genre film is extinct, "Barbarian" thrived despite all odds — including all of Cregger's rejected production company pitches.
Though "Barbarian" is his first feature film, Cregger has had plenty of entertainment industry experience as the founding member of the comedy troupe "The Whitest Kids U Know.

In the same way that people often call all forms of disposable paper tissue "Kleenex" or medical adhesive bandages "Band-Aids," Tim Burton has permeated the subgenre of spooky animated films so deeply, he is often misattributed as the director of films actually helmed by Henry Selick. A lifelong animator, Selick's directorial debut was "The Nightmare Before Christmas," a now-classic stop-motion animated musical dark fantasy filled with memorable characters that have since adorned just about every merchandisable product available at Hot Topic stores. The story was based on a three-page poem of the same name by Tim Burton, who had broken onto the scene with the stop-motion short film "Vincent," featuring horror icon Vincent Price.
Burton had approached Selick about turning his poem into a feature film for Disney, but after the company deemed it "too weird," he was fired by Disney and went off to direct the highly profitable "Beetlejuice" and "Batman.

It’s impressive to see the sheer volume and quality of genre projects with which actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Trial of The Chicago 7”) has been involved in such a short period. Some of them include Nia DaCosta’s “Candyman” soft-reboot, Michael Bay’s heist thriller “Ambulance,” playing a new incarnation of Morpheus in Lana Wachowski’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” a major villain in the two “Aquaman” movies from director James Wan, and earning an Emmy award for his performance on the HBO series “Watchmen.” Well, the rising star has nabbed another significant role in a comic book project.
