Parents Guide for
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this new feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes .

Sex & Nudity

A scene where a young teenager is taking a bath, in which the bath becomes a deep pool of water. She falls under, and we see her body fully naked (albeit with no explicit nudity; the worst you can see are the sides of her breasts, and even then it's somewhat hard to make out).

A woman takes off her nightgown and from behind you see her panties and no shirt on. The side of her breast can briefly be seen (however, it is somewhat hard to see).

There is a brief sex scene. Moaning is heard, and you see the couple afterwards on top of each other. No nudity is seen (their bodies are covered up by sheets).

A teenage guy mentions that he was watching "Mrs. Nude America" (or something like that, anyway...). His mom asks how he is able to listen to music while watching that: "How can you hear what they're saying?" He quips "Who cares what they're saying?"

Violence & Gore

Gallons upon gallons of blood (mostly involving the first two scenes below).

One scene where a girl is being dragged on the ceiling and her shirt is ripped open and she is slashed a couple times, lots of blood is shown.

Another scene a boy is falling asleep and he is pulled under the bed and a tons of blood pours out of the bed, almost like the bed is projectile vomiting blood.

Krueger masochistically slashes himself a couple of times, the result being squirts of greenish blood and maggots coming out of the wounds.

It is mentioned that Krueger killed children with his glove.

Profanity

About 5 F words lots of language.

A character's mother is an alcoholic (we see her drinking throught the film, as well as seeing her drunk in one scene). She also smokes cigarettes.

The whole entire movie is very intense and disturbing. The scenes listed under the Violence/Gore section above stand out as being very frightening. Your younger children will have trouble sleeping for a while as Freddy Krueger only kills people when they're dreaming, and children at that.
