While death is omnipresent in this genre we hold near and dear, we're always deeply saddened when we lose those who contribute to horror in front of and behind the camera. This year was especially taxing as you'll see below. To cap off our 2009 year-end coverage, let's reflect on the artists who have passed and the roles and films we'll always remember.
David Carradine (December 8, 1936 - June 3, 2009)
Son of actor John Carradine, also a genre vet, David's legacy spread across a multitude of genres, however, many will, of course, remember him for his turn in Kung Fu as Kwai Chang Cain. Throughout the '70s and '80s, he'd go on to star in various westerns, action and war films including Paul Bartel's Death Race 2000 (starring as the driver known as Frankenstein), Circle

A long casting notice discovered by SpoilerTV revealed the title, storyline, and characters of the prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race. For anyone familiar with Anderson's remake of Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000, and even for those unfamiliar, the story for Death Race: Frankenstein Lives shouldn't come as a huge surprise.
Newly arrived at Terminal Island, a prison for the most nonredeemable of convicts, Carl "Luke" Lucas must prove his mettle in a race to the death...
Much like the remake, "death" and "race" aren't arbitrary words in the title. The casting notice describes the two lead characters Lucas, replacing Jason Statham, and September Jones, filling in for the Warden character Joan Allen played in the remake.
[Carl "Luke" Lucas]
In his 20s-30, American, European, British, Australian, Latino, etc., handsome and confident, with a hint of danger, Lucas has been in trouble since the age of 12. Right-hand

Spoiler TV have got their hands on casting call details for the sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 actioner Death Race which, lest you've forgot, starred Jason Statham as 'Frankenstein' - a prisoner on Terminal Island who is coerced to enter Death Race, a gladiator-like televised fight-to-the-death.
Anderson is set to producer the sequel, entitled Death Race: Franksenstein Lives and is searching for a handful of stars to take roles including Carl 'Luke' Lucas, an assertive, strong and charismatic convict, September Jones, a model turned 'insatiably ambitious and eye-poppingly gorgeous' journalist with the soul of an ice-pick, Elizabeth Jame Case, the sexy card girl for the fights and later a navigator in the driving stages who's teamed with Lucas...
A number of lesser roles require martial-arts skills so it looks like we can expect very much the same of the sequel as we had in the first, which was

A prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race has been given the go-ahead by Universal Studios. Penned by Tony Giglio and based on the story from Anderson, the upcoming straight-to-dvd feature will delve into the back-story of the masked and mangled Frankenstein, who was original played by the late David Carradine in the 1975 original film Death Race 2000.
Carradine provided Frank’s voice in Anderson’s Death Race.
Death Race was a marginal hit that made $75 million worldwide.
Production on the loosely titled Death Race 2 will begin after Anderson completes Resident Evil: Afterlife. He will serve in a producing capacity.
No word on a cast or who will be helming the project. We don’t care. As long as Natalie Martinez is back.

Roger Corman to Receive Honorary Oscar

Even Roger Corman admits that his name was unlikely to be associated with an Academy Award. Yet the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to give Corman an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar, nonetheless. Corman told The Associated Press that he was surprised by the announcement.
I predicted that I would not win because I make low-budget films, and I felt the Academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films. I was truly surprised when I got the call.
Corman began his career producing and directing low-budget fare like 1955's Swamp Women and Monsters from the Ocean Floor, Corman quickly found that what he did best was provide opportunities to young director and actors like Martin Scorsese (1972's Boxcar Bertha), Jack Nicholson (1960's Little Shop of Horrors), Robert De Niro (1970's Bloody Mama), Francis Ford Coppola (Dementia 13), and Ron Howard (1977's Grand Theft Auto

He gave life to teenage cavemen and candy-stripe nurses. Crab monsters and humanoids from the deep. T-bird gangs and towns that dreaded sundown. His name is Roger Corman. And on Nov. 14, he will receive an honor that no one would have predicted: an honorary Academy Award. The 83-year-old B-movie titan has made nearly 400 films as a director and producer. From the start, Corman was a magnet for hungry young actors, writers, and directors who would work for slave wages for the chance to make their first film. They called it the "University of Corman," and the alumni include Francis Ford Coppola,

This past August it was announced that Impact Pictures had begun work on a prequel to Paul Ws Anderson's Death Race by hiring Tony Giglio to write the script, based on a story by Anderson.
Now, according to ShockTillYouDrop, the straight-to-dvd Death Race 2 has officially been greenlit by Universal Pictures. Production will commence once Anderson has completed Resident Evil: Afterlife, on which Giglio is serving as a second unit director.
Giglio will not direct the prequel, however.
Purportedly the script explores the past of the mangled driver known as Frankenstein, who was originally played by the late David Carradine in the 1975 film Death Race 2000, and again voiced by Carradine in last year's Death Race.
Anderson's Death Race was only modestly successful, earning $75M globally, after costing $45M to make.

The list of Roger Corman protégés is amazingly long and stuffed with goodies of all persuasions.
There are the famous men:
Scorcese (Box Car Bertha); Demme (Caged Heat, Crazy Mama), Nicholson (Little Shop of Horrors), Joe Dante (Cockfighter), Francis Coppola (Battle Beyond the Sun), Ron Howard (Grand Theft Auto) Sylvester Stallone (Death Race 2000), Bruce Dern, Robert De Niro (Bloody Mama) Peter Fonda ( The Wild Angels), Peter Bogdanovich (Saint Jack) Curtis Hanson (Sweet Kill) and Jonathan Kaplan (Night Call Nurses) and those are just a few of the guys who wrote to the Motion Picture Academy to advocate for the award that Corman is finally getting this weekend.

They said, "it is virtually impossible to separate our various entries into the film industry from Roger Corman and his obsession with working with newcomers."

We want to bring you more news every day, but unfortunately our robot army of writers who never need to sleep, to eat, or to love, is still under development (currently all they do is sleep, eat, and love). In the meantime, we’re going to be making “A Fistful of News” a regular feature you’ll see every other day where we bring you some additional news stories we found but didn’t have time to write. Until the Robot Army is ready to proceed (which is unlikely as we cut corners and ordered them from Belize, a country not known for quality robotics).
After the jump you’ll find ten quick news items including what’s next for Up director Peter Docter even though it’s not Monsters, Inc. 2, Guillermo del Toro’s monster cameo in The Hobbit, and Jeff Bridges’ behind-the-scenes photography on the set of Iron Man.

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!
Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.
Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!
Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.
This director's cut bleeds!
Smash Cut joins our Film Fest program which will be held in the Brenden Theatres inside the Palms Casino.

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in Drive Angry, a revenge movie directed by Patrick Lussier. Cage will star as a man chasing down the people who killed his wife and daughter, with the violence escalating with each death. I know it sounds ridiculous, and that's because it probably will be ridiculous. It sounds a bit like Mad Max, Death Race 2000, and Rolling Vengeance rolled into one. That's right, Rolling Vengeance, look it up. It's great 80's cheese. And intentionally cheesy is exactly how this is going to have to be for it to be bearable.
Now, I would like to think since Patrick Lussier, director of this year's campfest My Bloody Valentine, is at the helm, it should be cheesy fun. Who knows, perhaps even another full monty performance by Betsy Rue is in store. However, since it will star Nicolas Cage, I imagine the movie trying to take itself too seriously, or

A prequel toPaul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race” remake is in the works at Impact Pictures (Anderson and Jeremy Bolt’s production outfit).
In the first film Jason Statham played a wrongly imprisoned racing champion who competes in several televised brutal prison races to win his freedom.
Tony Giglio (Timber Falls, interview) has been hired to write a script, based on a story by Anderson. Giglio may also direct. The script is said to delve into the past of the driver known as Frankenstein.
Created for Paul Bartel’s original 1975 cult classic, Death Race 2000, Frankenstein was played by the late David Carradine. In the film, history said that his face was mangled by so many car wrecks he had to wear an intimidating mask. Carradine returned to Anderson’s remake briefly to voice the new Frankenstein before he was replaced by Jason Statham’s Jensen Ames.

A prequel to last year's generally pointless "Death Race" remake is in the works at Impact Pictures reports Shock Til You Drop.
Tony Giglio ("Timber Falls") has been hired to pen a script set before the events of the first film and explores how the deadly prison race got started
In the first film Jason Statham played a wrongly imprisoned racing champion who competes in several televised brutal prison races to win his freedom.
As the story is a prequel, the characters played by Ian McShane and Joan Allen could return while the original 'Frankenstein', whom Statham's character impersonates, could be the major character which he was in Paul Bartel's original 1975 cult classic "Death Race 2000".
