Warner Bros Will Make Clint Eastwood Fans' Day

30 November 2009 6:48 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you're lucky enough to be graced with cash or gift cards this Christmas, and you have a big hole on your DVD shelf where Clint Eastwood ought to be, Warner Bros will be happy to help you out. On February 16 they're releasing a massive, 19-disc collection Clint Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years at Warner Bros that celebrates the actor / director / producer. Included will be a booklet and a feature length documentary by Richard Schickel. The retail price will be a hefty $179.98.

Warners didn't release a complete list of those 35 films, but it spans the tender years of Where Eagles Dare all the way to 2008's Gran Torino. I imagine there will be some crossover with what you already own, like the entire Dirty Harry collection and The Outlaw Josey Wales. But most of his output from the late 1970s onward was done at Warner Bros, so all those films you've »

Updated: Reviews for Eastwood's 'Invictus' Begin to Tumble In

27 November 2009 1:32 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Updated: Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere has posted his review as well. His thoughts are listed at the bottom of this post.

I will be seeing Clint Eastwood's Invictus on December 7, but it has already started screening in New York and Los Angeles and while many critics are being told to hold their tongue a few have been allowed to let the cat out of the bag.

The film is described as the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team (Damon) to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa's underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

The Best of the Obsessed

4 September 2009 12:26 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The Best of the Obsessed Sandra Bullock's new film All About Steve is hitting theaters today. In the film, Bullock plays Mary Horowitz, a woman who is set up on a blind date with Steve (Bradley Cooper) and instantly believes that they are soul mates. Obsessively, Mary decides to follow Steve anywhere he goes and will stop at nothing to be with him. This got me thinking about how Hollywood often produces movies centering the domineering, aggressive and downright crazy, on-the-edge female character. Today, the majority of them are stereotypes, cliched personas of other characters (such as Bullock's Mary in Steve) and are, honestly, annoying. Here are what I believe to be some of the best of the obsessed female characters to grace the silver screen. 10.Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky (2001) I remember seeing this film in theaters and saying to myself “Cameron Diaz better be nominated for an Oscar. »

Night Fever: The World of Obsessive Fan Movies

2 July 2009 7:50 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

A crowd eagerly watches as a man dressed in a white suit performs an elaborate disco routine to the sounds of the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing." Sound familiar? It should; it's the signature sequence from 1977's "Saturday Night Fever." But now the scene belongs to another film as well, "Tony Manero," named after John Travolta's Brooklyn disco king character. In this version, a middle-aged "Fever" fanatic named Raúl Peralta (Alfredo Castro) appears on a Chilean TV show and reenacts those famous dance moves as part of a contest to determine the country's best Tony Manero impersonator. Raúl's impoverished struggles in late '70s Chile resemble Tony's in late '70s Brooklyn (a reason, no doubt, he responds so strongly to "Saturday Night Fever") with one crucial difference: where Tony strains against obstacles he encounters, Raúl simply removes them. If that obstacle happens to be a person, »

Audiences "Obsessed" With Beyonce Sex Thriller; "State Of Play" Lags At Weekend Boxoffice

27 April 2009 2:56 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Actress and cover girl model Ali Larter stars as the bad girl in Obsessed.By Lee Pfeiffer

The Screen Gems thriller Obsessed starring Beyonce has surprised the industry by claiming the top spot on the weekend boxoffice chart with $28 million- far more than than even Screen Gems had predicted. The film is the latest in the seemingly endless series of "deranged, crazed, sex-starved women" thrillers. Clint Eastwood's Play Misty For Me started it all way back in 1971 and every film since then has been a virtual remake. I believe there is an amusing sociological subtext to why female audiences are drawn to these films, despite their general disinterest in violent movies. There must be a certain sadistic delight in making the man in their life squirm through these celluloid versions of castrations. Instead of delivering another lecture on the dangers of cheating, the fairer sex is happy to let »

Clint Eastwood - Some Of My Best Friends Are Racist

27 February 2009 3:58 PM, PST | MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news »

Clint Eastwood either tells it like it is, or is a ranting, senile old coot. Defending, one assumes, his racially motivated thriller (or was it a comedy?) Gran Torino, Eastwood spoke with South Asian news source Ani, recalling with fondness an earlier time, when mocking ethnic minorities was a-ok.  He goes on to say, “In those earlier days every friendly clique had a ‘Sam the Jew’ or ‘Jose the Mexican.” Eastwood’s recent Gran Torino is his higest grossing film of all time.  More than Outlaw Josey Wales.  More than Play Misty For Me.  More than Unforgiven.  More than Million Dollar Baby (which was flawed, but still pretty damned good.) »

DVD Review: ‘Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection’ Includes Four Diverse Films

16 February 2009 1:00 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – With the $130 million gross and counting for “Gran Torino,” Clint Eastwood has proven that his star power has not diminished in the slightest even with 50 years in show business under his belt. There’s an entire generation new to Clint who have an amazing catalog to explore and they can start with four of his most unforgettable roles, now available in the “Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection”.

Universal probably thought their excellent “American Icon Collection” would be perfectly timed to take full advantage of at least one, maybe two more Oscar nominations for Clint Eastwood. With his direction of “Changeling” and critically acclaimed lead performance in “Gran Torino,” Eastwood seemed a slam dunk to be a part of Oscar night 2009, as he has so many times in recent years.

Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection is released by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment on February 10th, 2009.
